Lake Superior State University has a English department this is noted for being “activist grammarians”. Each year they compile a List of Banished Words. Actually, it is a list of over-used words they wish could be banished from the language. In a grammatical sense of humor, they used many of those words in their press release. “Lake Superior State University released its 37th annual List of Words Banished from the Queen’s English for Misuse, Overuse, and General Uselessness, an amazing list that is bound to generate some blowback. Worn-out words and phrases are the new normal this year, but with some shared sacrifice, we can clean up the language and win the future.”

Some of the words on this year’s list included: “ginormous”, “man cave”, and “occupy”. Quite an “amazing” list.
