Demon Hunter: Saga by Cynthia Vespia: An Excerpt

In a dark and ageless time where the world knew evil in many forms: werewolf, vampire, demon and dragons, Costa Calabrese has just uncovered the truth about his past. Some truths should never be revealed. When you learn you’re the son of the world’s foremost and feared hunter of demons life’s rules inevitably change. Now it is up to him to take up the role his bloodline demands and stop the evil from spreading over the land…whether he wants to or not.

Exploring the classic theme of good versus evil, Demon Hunter blends the highly popular elements of dark fantasy with the proven concept of high-adventure novels where believable, down-to-earth characters take the reader on a journey. It is the story about a nobody who becomes a somebody in the bloodiest of ways.

This is without a doubt the darkest idea I’ve delved into in all my years of writing. But at its core Demon Hunter is a story about human frailties. Costa, our hero, is plagued not only by physical demons, but mental ones as well. We’ve all had those little voices in our head trying to sway us from our path. It is those demons not faced that are the true danger.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

The zombies were surprisingly fast. Before we made it up to the mid-point of the staircase they had caught up to us. As the last one to go up I was the first one targeted. Stephenson, his bowels still dripping from his chest cavity, reached out a gnarled hand and took a good fist-sized clump of my hair.

I almost fell backwards into the waiting arms of The Regulators but managed to catch my balance. Stephenson’s breath smelled of decay upon my ear. He pulled and twisted my hair, controlling my head in the process. I thought instantly of Wiggins ripping out Captain Davies throat with just his teeth alone. My heart quickened in its pace. Death stood waiting for me and one of these days He would collect.

Today was not that day, however. Having my companions at my back is something I had tried to dissuade before but had not regretted having. That certainly remained the case as both Paralay and Talisa scrambled to my aide despite their own safety.

We all tried in vein to pry Stephenson’s grip from me but it appeared as though his strength had grown in multitude. The other members of the crew were coming quickly behind him having torn the door from its hinges and even ripping out the window box to get inside.

“Stand aside,” I heard Talisa say to Paralay. I could not make out what she was doing only that she had brandished a dagger and advanced. Instead of attacking the zombie Stephenson she went after me, my hair to be exact. She hacked away with her dagger until the only thing Stephenson held in his hands was the length of ponytail I formerly had running down my neck.

Free to move I took the initiative to dispatch Stephenson the same way I had fallen zombie Wiggins. Stephenson’s head tumbled to the ground right at the feet of the rest of the crew. They collected his head from the ground and paused long enough in their confusion for the three of us to make our escape.

When we got to the top of the landing all three of us worked diligently to destroy the staircase. We only managed to put a good size hole in the top of the step before we had to turn and run. The Regulators were still coming and nothing short of fighting the entire lot was going to stop them.
