On Gaea, a series of Ancient caches of technology are discovered. The religious Logen and Talin, the heir to the throne, enter a deadly race identical to the fatal path of Erebis. Only Talin realizes that there is more at stake than mortal power. As he battles his usurping Logen sister Faye, the lamkee lead him to the cache that may save their moon. But the knowledge comes perhaps too late. Talin and his companions must stop Faye before her final bid for power reduces humanity and the only other form of intelligent life in the galaxy, the lamkee, to the black ash of Erebis.
