For Immediate Release — Portland, Oregon — April 16, 2014 — PubWest, a nonprofit association for book publishers, will offer two professional development conferences this summer that will develop new skills and techniques in book publishing professionals with 1 to 5 years experience in the field. The PUB501 Summer Sessions will be held June 19-20 at the University of Denver and June 26-27 at Portland State University. PubWest will allow registrants to deduct 50% of their PUB501 registration fees from registration for PubWest’s 2015 Conference in Pasadena, California and will also offer a free one-year Individual Membership for PUB501 registrants who have not been PubWest members in the past. For more information and to register, please visit www.pubwest.org/pub501.

The book publishing industry has few affordable ways for professionals to acquire new skills: on the job, from a mentor, and through PubWest. Now PubWest is proud to offer PUB501 Summer Sessions, a new professional development conference for staff with 1-5 years of publishing experience and for those seriously considering a career in book publishing. PUB501 alum will learn specific, practical new skills from experienced publishing veterans and return to the office better at their jobs.

“PUB501 offers an impressive value for newer publishing staff,” said Dave Trendler, President of the PubWest Board of Directors. “We view it as an affordable investment in the future of our industry, offered at a time of year when a day and a half out of the office is doable even for busy publishers.”

“The incentives for PUB501 registrants make it incredibly affordable,” said Kent Watson, PubWest’s Executive Director. “We will help less experienced publishing staff this summer while giving them a great incentive to attend the 2015 PubWest Conference next February.”

The one-and-a-half day Summer Sessions will surround registrants with top presenters from PubWest.

DAY ONE: The Big Picture, Book Production Tour, Topical Intensives, PUB411, Open Happy Hour: In the first session, veteran panelists will present The Big Picture, an overview each of publishing’s four core functions and the interplays and tensions between them. A lunch speaker will offer a virtual tour of a book production facility, from prepress to shipping. During the afternoon intensive, expert presenters will lead registrants through a deep exploration of one topic in either Acquisitions, Production/Design, or Sales/Marketing. The session will close with a one-hour plenary called PUB411, where real-life workplace problems will be presented and discussed in an open discussion. Then PUB501 will break for a nearby networking and social event to which all publishing professionals are invited.

DAY TWO: Hands-On Crosstraining: This morning, PUB501 will divide into small “publishing houses,” each of which will tackle the same timeline of tasks, from author proposal, through contracting, production, marketing, sales, and subrights. Bring a laptop: materials will be supplied on flash drives. PubWest staff will mentor each group, and at the close of the session, the group will assess each company’s confidence in producing a successful title.

PUB501 alum will conclude the Summer Sessions more knowledgeable and more valuable to their publisher employers, returning to the office with specific new skills and techniques they can apply every day to make and sell better books.

Registration is now open for the PUB501 Summer Sessions! Visit www.pubwest.org/pub501 to learn more. Registration for PubWest members is $155, non-members $195. 50% of PUB501 registration fees will be deducted from registration for the PubWest 2015 Conference in Pasadena, California February 5-7, 2015. Non-member registration includes a free one-year Individual Membership for first-time members that grants access to member discounts and benefits, networking events, webinars, Booklores, and the member rate for the 2015 PubWest Conference.
