EXCERPT

This book is a culmination of what I believe is the most efficient method for publishing an eBook while providing the highest royalty return with the minimal amount of hours and continual maintenance. Much of my knowledge was gained early on through trial and error, because I was on my own discovering what worked, and what did not. There were often times when I just gave up on certain projects, knowing they weren’t worth my time and effort, as they put a strain on my family life.

In the following chapters I will outline some of the benefits of each program and provide guidance about getting your manuscript formatted into each of the required formats. Keep in mind that this guide is not a guide to assist in the editing of your manuscript, but rather the expectation is that you have completed that very important step at this point. Your manuscript should be polished and ready for upload/publication. Granted, the eBook technology makes it very easy to go back and upload a new version of the manuscript, even to fix spelling errors or make slight editorial corrections. I highly advise against that approach as a quick way to publish. Your readers are expecting a polished masterpiece that they can enjoy without distractions, common errors, or editing mistakes. Find a good editor and put the time and devotion into editing before proceeding. I spent about six months to a year in the editing phase before I felt that Squawk 7700 was ready for publication.

Shortly after publishing Squawk 7700 as an eBook, I watched it propel into the top five best selling aviation eBooks on Amazon.com. It snowballed from that point on, reviews were written, and more eBooks were purchased. Several years later, I was named Featured Author of the Experiment Aircraft Association AirVenture fly-in at Oshkosh, Wisconsin for three summers: 2011, 2012 and 2013 and possibly again this summer, 2014.

Along the way, I met other authors, both aviation and non-aviation authors, who had a desire to have their manuscripts and paperback books converted into eBook format. I had become an expert on the subject matter of conversion, by my own pursuit to educate myself on the technology. In time, I was providing mentorship and technical assistance to other authors for hire. Suddenly, I had a steady supplemental income. Not only was I working full-time as a Software Quality Engineer, but I was receiving royalty checks each month from my eBook and paperbacks. In addition, I was receiving paychecks for my expert knowledge as a consultant in the eBook publication process from my fellow authors in their desire to enter the eBook world.
Recently, I decided that the knowledge that I have gained in the past five years should be shared for the benefit of future independent authors. My hope is that your literary works can see the light of eBook publication with a tolerable amount time and effort put forth. I hope that my trial and error of experimental learning and fine-tuning of the process can provide the guidance you need to find the best path of getting your manuscript formatted and distributed in the most efficient manner. There are thousands of different approaches and opinions in this business of publishing eBooks. After spending five years testing different methods and witnessing what works well for other authors, I believe this will be your most efficient way to publish your eBook while providing the highest royalty return.

AUTHOR BIO

Peter Buffington, author, has been a licensed commercial pilot for 15 years. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Sciences from the University of North Dakota and is currently employed as a Software Quality Analyst in the Midwest. He flies for pleasure outside of work. Peter has logged more than 2,700 hours total flying time in countless aircraft makes and models.

Peter began writing the first edition of Squawk 7700 in October of 2000, completion was in May of 2001. The first edition was published by Morris Publishing in July 2001. Two months after publishing the first edition, the events of 9-11-2001 unfolded forever changing the airline industry. Peter’s motivation in publishing his personal story was his desire to see change in the regional airline industry. The regional airline’s hiring practices, corner-cutting, and Pay-For-Training were pushing the moral and ethical envelope. Peter knew by publishing his story many aspects of the the airlines daily operations would be exposed.

Nearly 10 years passed since publication of the first edition. Two recent air disasters motivated Peter to publish a second edition of Squawk 7700. The crashes of Comair Flight 5191 in Lexington, Kentucky and Colgan Air 3407 in Buffalo New York. Shortly after the US Airways Flight 1549 incident in New York, Peter and Jeff Skiles began working together to see that changes were implemented in the way regional airlines hired pilots, and to expose the daily lifestyle of a regional airline pilot. Jeff Skiles was called to testify before congress on numerous occasions in 2009. Jeff explained why change was urgently needed in the regional airline industry. On July 30th, 2010, the U.S. House and Senate Passed the FAA Safety Bill setting forth new pilot hiring minimums and training requirements. On August 1st, 2010 the POTUS signed the FAA Safety Bill HR 5900.

Recently while signing copies of Squawk 7700 at author events, Peter discovered that his expert knowledge and eBook publishing skills were in high demand, so he started offering eBook conversion consulting services. He has completed dozens of eBook conversions for other authors.
