BookBub and Chirp – Are they worth it?

BookBub sends me a daily email and I actually read it every day. For someone who gets a lot of emails daily, this says something. BookBub is a company that shares lists of free or discounted books. There’s also Chirp.com which is owned by BookBub and that gives you lists of deeply discounted audiobooks.

Even when something is free it isn’t really free. If you don’t have a lot of time to give you may skip participating even in something free. You may pass on a free book because you don’t have time to read it. Or you’re not sure it’s worth your time.

I thought it would be interesting to look at what I got from BookBub and Chirp during one week to see what, when, why, and how much.

Keep in mind that what I paid at the time it was featured may not be what’s listed when you look it up. These are limited-time promotions.

The McGavin Brothers Boxed Set: Books 4-6 by Vicki Lewis Thompson

Why? I recognized the author’s name but haven’t read her. I’ve been on a “cowboy story kick” for a while now and this was several books so I jumped at the chance! I paid 99 cents for 3 books!

The Haunting of Meade Mansion (A Riveting Haunted House Mystery Series Book 9) by Skylar Finn

I thought the book sounded good, but I didn’t know the author. It was free that day so it was worth my time to give it a try.

Jab, Jab, Right Hook: How to Tell Your Story in a Noisy Social World by Gary Vaynerchuk for $2.99 on 11/17

I recognize the name of the author and it someone I respect and trust. I’m always looking for a way to improve myself and Gary Vaynerchuk hits all the right notes for me.

50 Popular Beliefs That People Think Are True (50 series) by Guy P. Harrison
I paid 99 cents for it and loved the title.

The Mammoth Book of Nightmare Stories: Twisted Tales Not to Be Read at Night! Multiple authors including names I love!
I can’t believe I got this for $1.99!!! So many stories!

My Favorite Things: A Christmas Collection by Lynsay Sands
I am so ready for Christmas! The topic was great. The author is well known so I can trust it will be well written. There are three Christmas stories in the book and I only paid $1.99 for it!

Now for Chirp with I L-O-V-E with a passion!

Nora Roberts Dark Witch on audiobook! I’ve always been interested in this book and now I get the audiobook for $2.99! Nora Roberts is a well known and beloved author. I love her writing so this was a no-brainer.

C.S. Lewis The Art of Writing and the Gifts of Writers
Of course I know the name, but I am also very interested in the subject matter. I love learning via audiobooks so this was a great deal for $1.99

The Marsh King’s Daughter by Karen Dionne for $4.99. I have this book but I’ve been so busy I’ve not had time to read it though I really want to. This is the perfect solution. I can listen on my way to work or while doing a project at home. I love this author and the book has gotten such rave reviews.

Since Chirp began I have purchased 46 audiobooks. This is a very worthwhile site to sign up with.

I recommend both BookBub and Chirp to all of my reader friends!
