Hello again!
Stopping by Reader’s Entertainment is always fun, and it’s been a little while. I’m V, internationally bestselling sci-fi fantasy author, nerd, and archaeologist. I speak a lot about my love of science and space and humanity, but something I don’t often mention is how much I love the space between and the echoes and imprints we make in the space we leave behind.
Much of my day job as a contract archaeologist occurs in the strange transitional places of our society–forests soon-to-be parking lots, parking lots soon-to-be buildings, and oh so many powerline corridors. It’s impossible not to feel the unyielding press of progress as we hike from test pit to test pit.
I’m moved as I hike across these areas, watching electrical lines looping like streamers into the distance. We see imprints of people everywhere–fire hearths, foundations, deer stands, convertibles full of bullet holes. But woven around each of these are layers of rebuilding soil, tangles of vines, tufts of fox fur snagged on rusted metal. Our echoes entangled, absorbed, transformed.
This metamorphosis found between movement and stillness, of comfort in liminal spaces–in places that were never meant to be fully inhabited–is something I instill in my writing and my world-building. More so now, than ever many of us are forced to become familiar with the world grinding to a halt, and just as many of us wrestle with the pain of our world crashing to a halt while it seems like the rest of existence rushes on around us.
It’s true that when we’ve set aside our shovels and the artifacts cataloged or returned to the tribes, the trees we marveled at will be gone. Like the electricity snapping down the lines, the trees igniting into orange as September wanes, like our boots on the gravel access road, whatever is erected in our wake will eventually be transformed in turn.
As both a writer and a reader, the stories we share are akin to this: moving through a conflict, however small, and watching how everything changes. And often we know if we linger in that space, we too might transform.
I hope you all have a moment to stop and marvel at your surroundings, at your impact, and how each of our echoes can change the world.
Dive into the abyss with me on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook and, as always, keep exploring.
