Neighborly Inspiration by Steffanie Costigan

Every book has come from some sort of inspiration for my book of Land of the Dragon the beginning setting of Germany during 1940s World War II inspiration came from that from my childhood neighbours. Growing up I had next door neighbours who were immigrants from Germany.

My neighbours from Germany lived during the war and as such they had many tales of what it was like living during that time in Germany. As a young girl I was captivated by their war stories; they told their experiences to me with such passion and tears in their eyes. I became fascinated with World War II. I started to researcher and interview old folks in the area asking them all sorts of question.

The more I researched and did interviews the more I realized patterns of how the dictatorship tried to erase the identity of Germany and replace it with a new during that time. They change and twisted culture and traditions replacing them with unethical new traditions of hate. That is when I realized how important it is to celebrate our different cultures and not forget them, if we do, we can be at risk of losing our identity and have a dictatorship manipulate our cultures.

There is power behind culture, “The only true happiness lies in knowing who you are.” ~Laurell K. Hamilton

Here’s a look at Steffanie’s latest release Land of the Dragon:

They had not even started to fight, yet I already could smell blood in the air…

I am a traitor, victim, fighter, survivor, sister, and daughter of a Nazi. I am Eleanor Kuhn. I will not be indoctrinated by Hitler. I fight for the truth my world has forgotten and ignored. Upon escaping the country, I stumbled into a whole new world, and I soon realized that war is everywhere you look.

With nothing but the clothes on my back and five siblings in tow, I wash up on the coast of a world I’d only glimpsed in books and the clouds of dreams: Land of the Dragon. But there’s something about this new world that rings with familiarity. Or perhaps someone . . .
