An unnammed buyer now holds the check that launched an American icon – Superman. In an auction held online at ComicConnect.com the check made out in 1938 for $412 for the rights to Superman sold for $160,000. The check given to Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster gave D.C. Comics the rights the series and it’s been soaring ever since.

The check almost went to the landfill as explained by ComicConnect.com: (After a copyright issue was settled with the check) “When the lunch meeting ended, a box of old court documents that had accumulated over the years was handed to one of the D.C. team. When the box was delivered back to the D.C. executive office, the employee was told, ‘Just throw it all out. We don’t need any of it anymore.'”
