In an era of “smart” phones, tablets and the Internet, newspapers are slowly fading away. In an effort to keep readers and update their style, newspapers are working to find alternative ways to keep their readership. A U.K. newspaper, the Lancashire Evening Post has launched a prototype paper that comes with a button readers can press the paper plays an audio version of the news article.

The project was created by the University of Central Lancashire, and is called “Interactive Newsprint”. This “button” not only reads the paper, but will also be a marketing tool, allowing the news paper to see which articles readers are actually viewing and which advertisements are grabbing their attention.

(You can read more information about Interactive Newsprint here.)

The same company, Interactive Newsprint is also developing a newspaper that responds to touch. This “smart” paper can play sounds, see images and text. From their website: “We are developing an entirely new platform for community news and information by connecting paper to the internet to create what is believed to be the world’s first internet-enabled newspaper.”
