Rumors are flying in the publishing world as Amazon representatives have been reportedly in talks with executives from Simon & Schuster. It has not been confirmed if these meetings are about merger or acquistion of the two companies.
Amazon has acquired Goodreads, Comixology and is in a partnership with CBS. If these ‘talks’ lead to a purchase of the big five publisher, Amazon would acquire major distribution in brick-and-mortar bookstores and have viable and well known global publishing imprints. It would also open bookstores to distribution of their Createspace titles, as well open library doors to their titles via Overdrive, 3M and Baker & Taylor.
The ebook retailer currently has several of their own imprints including:Â AmazonEncore, AmazonCrossing, Montlake Romance, Thomas & Mercer, 47 North, New Harvest, Day One, and Powered by Amazon.
Several media outlets however caution that the ‘talks’ are simply about eBook pricing in light of the recent DOJ settlement.
We will print updates as they become available.
