March Is For Science Fiction – Authors Breakfield & Burkey and A Sci-fi Backstory

We are storytellers who allow our imaginations to plunge into different genres. While at the University of Texas-Austin, Breakfield (Charles) studied astrophysics based on his passion for astronomy.  Math and physics have remained top of mind during his professional career as a techno-geek, so it didn’t surprise Burkey (Rox)when he sent over a rough manuscript entitled Planet Survivors. The image shown above is from that short story.

Years ago, Breakfield and a partner set up a science fiction comic bookstore in Austin, Texas. Several aspiring authors and comic artists would chew the fat with us. The store had a neat vibe. George R.R. Martin visited a couple of times, which was fun. That chapter was closed when Breakfield sold his interest after he married and began his family. Curious fact: Austin Books on Lamar in Austin celebrated its 35th birthday.

The Star Trek series and Star Wars movies fueled Charles’ lifelong infatuation with science fiction. The fascinating stories were about exploring other worlds and using technology and advanced engineering inroads. Another compelling movie that leveraged a combination of space travel and technology, 2001-A Space Odessey, illustrated how computer programs using Artificial Intelligence can run amuck. The technical advancements created to bring these movies to the screen are stunning. It is fascinating to see items born in the writer’s creative mind and brought to the screen, available in modern homes and businesses today.

Charles and Rox started reading books at a young age and routinely found books to explore. The practice continues for enjoyment and to learn different writing styles. Dune is at the top of Charles’ list. Many treasured science fiction novels opened readers’ minds to wild possibilities with commentary on technical advancements, political differences, societal inequities, and human tenacity. The creativity required to write seemingly futuristic stories opens the doors to exploring science facts.

Charles and Rox have extensive technological careers, immersed in the middle of its evolution. Technical changes are fast and furious, which is mostly good. Sometimes, the changes have negative impacts not considered in the design. Those elements might be exploited by nefarious individuals or groups for power and control. Using these vulnerabilities is what attracted Breakfield and Burkey to begin writing fiction. Our combined creative license delivers stories with elements of humor, pathos, relationships, travel, and heartbreak on a foundation of technology.

Authors Breakfield & Burkey are fussy about their story details whether in their techno-thrillers, women’s contemporary, historical fiction, or science fiction books. Don’t be fooled; our passion for storytelling doesn’t mean we invent facts to be used in our stories. Everything is researched and verified before we insert things into our tales. Consequentially, we avoid time travel and faster-than-light travel since we can’t justify these capabilities. Probably a personality flaw, but there it is.

We must be confident of how the technology or the planet engineering works to use it properly in the story. Made-up facts tick off readers and push them to put the book down. We speculate on how applications, networks, or applied technologies might morph into a juicier problem or situation, but the foundational facts are included. Storytelling is the art of plausibility when writing. Join us on our next adventure to see if we stray too far from reality.

Breakfield & Burkey

Here’s A look at Breakfield & Burkey’s latest release Enigma Tracer:

The clock is ticking … can Gracie uncover the truth?

Phillip Pliant is the wealthy opportunist plastics dealer, and CEO of Pliant Industries. He’s also a master thief—creating a pervasive threat to the manufacturing infrastructure in the Caribbean islands. With the cartel as his stealth client, the naïve city leaders have been seduced, enabling the production of more than 3-dimentional building materials.

And set the stage for massive chaos and destruction.

Pliant has locked up contracts, assets, and control of any future expansion. His contacts and clients salivate over their probable financial reward—the expected profits are monstrous.

Is the R-Group, now led by Gracie and the family heirs, strong enough to win against this predator? Can JJ’s CATS (Cyber Assassin Technology Services) act on the root-cause analysis in time?

  • Will the R-Group and CATS sabotage Pliant’s plan before it’s too late?
  • Can Jeff and Keith use their covert skills to put the bad guys away for good?
  • Will Gracie be able to squash Pliant and the cartels?

Can the chain of islands survive the underhanded tactics and threats?

Gracie never considered their lives would hang in the balance between winning and losing. Will the devious plot be uncovered in time? The clock is ticking. Five … four … three …

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Charles Breakfield – Works for a high-tech manufacturer as a solution architect, functioning in hybrid data/telecom environments. He considers himself a long-time technology geek, who also enjoys writing, studying World War II history, travel, and cultural exchanges. Charles’ love of wine tastings, cooking, and Harley riding has found its ways into the stories. As a child, he moved often because of his father’s military career, which even helps him with the various character perspectives he helps bring to life in the series. He continues to try to teach Burkey humor.

Rox Burkey – Works as a business architect who builds solutions for customers on a good technology foundation. She has written many technical and white papers but finds the freedom of writing fiction a lot more fun. As a child, she helped to lead the kids with exciting new adventures built on make-believe characters, was a Girl Scout until high school, and contributed to the community as a young member of a Head Start program. Rox enjoys family, learning, listening to people, travel, outdoor activities, sewing, cooking, and thinking about diversifying the series.

Breakfield and Burkey – started writing non-fictional papers and books, but it wasn’t nearly as fun as writing fictional stories. They found it interesting to use the aspects of technology people are incorporating into their daily lives more and more as a perfect way to create a good guy/bad guy story with elements of travel to the various places they have visited either professionally and personally, humor, romance, intrigue, suspense, and a spirited way to remember people who have crossed paths with them. They love to talk about their stories with private and public book readings. Burkey also conducts regular interviews for Texas authors, which she finds very interesting. Her first interview was, wait for it, Breakfield. You can often find them at local book fairs or other family-oriented events.

The primary series is based on a family organization called R-Group. Recently they have spawned a subgroup that contains some of the original characters as the Cyber Assassins Technology Services (CATS) team. The authors have ideas for continuing the series in both of these tracks. They track their many characters on a spreadsheet, with a hidden avenue for the future coined The Enigma Chronicles tagged in some portions of the stories. Fan reviews seem to frequently suggest that these stories would make good television or movie stories, so the possibilities appear endless, just like their ideas for new stories.

They have book video trailers on their YouTube Channel and website, www.EnigmaSeries.com. We invite you to visit the website for FREE stuff along with samples of the books and options to purchase signed copies directly. You may also find it fascinating to check out the fun acronyms they create for their stories. Reach out to them at Authors@EnigmaSeries.com, Twitter@EnigmaSeries, or Facebook@TheEnigmaSeries.
