Narges Mohammadi, Iranian author/activist, wins Nobel Peace Prize

0

PEN Canada celebrates the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to jailed Iranian writer and human rights activist Narges Mohammadi for “her fight against the oppression of women in Iran, and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all.” Ms Mohammadi is currently serving a ten-year sentence in a Tehran prison after repeated arrests since 2009.

Narges Mohammadi has fought for women’s rights in Iran with heroic strength and courage and at great personal cost,” said Grace Westcott, President of PEN Canada. “The Nobel Peace Prize recognizes not only her inspiring courage but that of all the women and girls of Iran who have risen up to demand their freedoms.”

An honorary member of PEN Canada since June 2023, Mohammadi has been widely recognized for her unstinting courage in defence of women’s rights. She is one of three imprisoned Iranian women to receive the 2023 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize and a recipient of PEN America’s 2023 Barbey Freedom to Write Award.

Mohammadi wrote to us from prison a few weeks ago, to participate in our reading event at TIFA in support of imperiled writers around the world. In the note she spoke of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement and said:

“My message is one of hope, vitality, and love of life. For me, life is the perseverance and fortification of our struggles until we achieve democracy, freedom, and equality. I am certain of our victory and equally certain of the religious dictatorship’s disintegration, collapse, and eventual demise. Rest assured that your support, people who love freedom of expression, and that of the wider world, will accelerate this process.”

PEN Canada is a nonpartisan organization that celebrates literature, defends freedom of expression, and assists writers in peril at home and abroad. The English-language Canadian centre was founded in 1983 and is proud to be one of over 100 chapters of PEN International.

New Release: LOGGER HEADS By Bruce Hornidge

LOGGER HEADS By Bruce Hornidge

On the thirtieth anniversary of  “The War in the Woods,” a new memoir recalls events from a Clayoquot Sound tree faller’s point of view

Thirty years after the War in the Woods in Clayoquot Sound, career tree faller Bruce Hornidge’s memoir of events, Loggerheads, will be published on October  17, 2023, by Regina’s, Saskatchewan’s Endless Sky Books. Book-launch events are planned for Port Alberni, Ucluelet, and Nanaimo on Vancouver Island from October 25 to 30.

After more than two decades harvesting in the beauty of the forest, Hornidge was “loggershamed” as a “tree-killer” and faced soul-searing losses of identity and livelihood, part of the human fallout of the inevitable move away from a resource-based economy. Loggerheads is written from the unique, sometimes humorous, and even irreverent point of view of one of the many loggers in Ucluelet and Tofino whose forestry careers were cut short on the other side of the demonstrators’ picket lines and government and company doublespeak.

“In a three-week window, decades ago, I produced the bulk of this book in the form of a paper called ‘The Nightmare.’ My goal was a story that is truthful, personal, and encompasses many of the issues in this complex problem,” Hornidge says.“Three decades after The War of the Woods, we know what happened, and we’ve been told why. There’s a lot we were never told.”

Hornidge adds that the logging industry isn’t the only resource-based industry that has been subjected to shaming. “By sharing my story as an ex-Clayoquot Sound forest worker, I hope to help people understand the issues surrounding resource-based industries from a broader perspective than that spun by the media, where those opposed to logging are painted as the brave biblical David versus the Goliath of us ‘evil tree-killers,’” he said.

Hornidge acknowledges the logging industry wasn’t blameless. “A careless approach was adopted by many as the forestry industry picked up speed during what was considered an era of largely unrestricted logging. Some of those true stories can be found in this book’s pages.

“For a decade, the issue of forestland use in British Columbia raged like a forest fire. Starting small, it generated smoke and mirrors and a world media hype that came to hang like a stalled hurricane over a tiny, beautiful corner of the world known as Clayoquot Sound—and the largest act of civil disobedience in Canada to that date. It was a storm that just wouldn’t quit,” Hornidge writes in the opening pages of Loggerheads.“In that brief, tangled era, with my livelihood hanging in the balance, the pressures of life built to such a point that I believed either I’d have a mental breakdown or my emotions would break loose and lash out, with real consequences.”

Raw emotions of distrust and abandonment welled up, and, in his distress, Hornidge even toyed briefly with twisted ideas of how he could give the cause its “fifteen minutes of fame” on the world stage. “Thank goodness cooler heads prevailed.”

Hornidge concludes there is hypocrisy evident in both the anti-resource utilization camp and those in favour of resource-based industry. “Those who live in wood houses shouldn’t throw stones,” he says with a smile.

Loggerheads received a warm review from Bill Arnott, author of the Gone Viking series and A Season on Vancouver Island. “Part treatise, part manual, part eco-memoir, Bruce Hornidge’s Loggerheads is a timely, timeless read for lovers of trees. Richly shared in crisp prose, this book stands as a sentinel evergreen to the nature and industry our forests provide,” Arnott says.

Loggerheads is available from most bookstores, online and off. It can also be purchased directly from Endless Sky Books at www.endless-sky-books.com or Shadowpaw Press at www.shadowpawpress.com.

Guest Post: An Introduction to Ayurvedic Healing By Vannoy Gentles Fite

0

Ayurvedic which means, “the science of life,” is an ancient form of healing that is widely used today in various countries all over the Earth. In western medicine, you would typically go into a doctor’s office, maybe spend 15 minutes with the doctor outlining your illness, and he/she would write you a prescription for medication. This has been our pattern of healing for over a hundred years. By contrast, with Ayurveda, you would go into your Ayurvedic practitioner’s office, talk and answer questions for 1-2 hours about every aspect of your life, and he/she would prescribe for you many different treatments. You may be asked to bathe a certain way, do particular exercises, eat a type of diet, drink certain herbal teas, meditate a particular way, say some mantras, use a particular massage oil, sleep and rise at a certain time, say unique affirmations, and surround yourself with particular colors or crystals.

All of these practices that you would do for your Ayurvedic healing typically have one goal or outcome besides healing you, and that is to balance your doshas—these are a personality type. There are three main doshas in Ayurveda: vata, pitta, and kapha. You can have a combination of doshas, or have the personality and health type of one main dosha. The aim of Ayurveda is to balance the doshas for good health. Having your doshas out of balance usually means that there is one dosha type that is prevalent in you. Reducing that main dosha can heal you in a multitude of ways.

There are certain illnesses that are attributed to the three doshas. If you have an abundance of vata, then you will be prone to arthritis, back pain, sciatica, dry skin, arm atrophy, anxiety, panic attacks, nerve issues, digestive problems, and painful illnesses as you age.

Those with an abundance of kapha typically experience obesity, diabetes, allergies, depression, lethargy, congestion, indigestion, heart issues, timidity, and mucus/sinus issues.

The illness associated with an abundance of pitta illnesses include gastrointestinal illnesses, skin issues, sweating, high blood pressure, shoulder/neck pain, and strokes.

Getting your dosha under control and balanced is a life-long project, but can keep you from getting diseases you would get if you simply let your doshas continue out of balance as they have been. Learning which dosha you primarily are is easy. There are characteristics associated with each dosha, both physical and mental.

Characteristics associated with vata: Quick speech, thin body types, dry skin and hair, fast walking pace, anxiety, fearfulness, prone to cold, gassy, and brittle nails.

Characteristics associated with kapha: A heavy body type, lethargy, slowness, excess mucus, thin and oily hair, and foggy thinking.

Characteristics associated with pitta: An average body type, focus, skilled speech, cheerfulness, quick temper, good memory, blond/red hair, prone to being hot.

Do you spot yourself among the doshas? It can be somewhat frightening to discover which dosha is your primary dosha, then to realize what diseases lie in your future if you don’t get your doshas balanced. Balancing the doshas is a constant, everyday job. But, fortunately, most of the time it is enjoyable. Below I will address each of the primary doshas and what you can do to bring that particular dosha down, and to bring the other two doshas up, thereby bringing your doshas into balance. Try a couple of dosha balancing techniques each day and see if you don’t feel better physically and mentally.

Vata
Eat: Nuts, seeds, stews, soups, squash, oats, rice, wheat, sour cream, yogurt, almonds, honey, maple syrup, ghee, sesame oil, avocado, carrots, onion, okra, tomatoes, bananas, blackberries, coconut, grapefruit, oranges, pears, peaches, nectarines, water, chamomile tea, fish, chicken, turkey, pork, seafood.
Do Not Eat: Cold drinks, salads, broccoli, cauliflower, chocolate, dried fruit, cranberries, asparagus, brussels sprouts, cabbage, raw vegetables, beef, legumes.
Exercise: It is important for vatas (which are very airy) to be grounded. Any exercise a vata can do that is outdoors in nature is so good. Standing with your bare feet on the Earth can ground a vata quicker than anything. Yoga poses are great for grounding vatas, including corpse pose, downward facing dog, child’s pose, sitting poses, stretching poses, and balancing poses.
Gemstones: Vatas should primarily surround themselves with ruby, onyx, emerald, aquamarine, garnet, or topaz.
Colors: Warm, grounding, earthy colors such as yellows, greens, browns, and oranges.

Kapha
Eat: Apples, cherries, peaches, plums, raisins, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, onions, mushrooms, radishes, spinach, Brussels sprouts, corn, basmati rice, eggs, chicken, turkey, honey, corn oil, lentils, beans, broccoli, and lettuce.
Do Not Eat: Heavy grounding foods, such as soups, stews, heavy meats, cheese, most nuts, mayonnaise, oats, and ice cream.
Exercise: It is important for kaphas to move. Kaphas are very sedentary. Take a hike, ride a bicycle, do aerobics, go swimming—any exercise that can get the arms and legs moving. Yoga poses include warrior, twisting poses, balancing poses, and sun salutations.
Gemstones: Kaphas should surround themselves with rubies, garnet, blue sapphire, carnelian, and cat’s eye.
Colors: Kaphas need stimulating colors such as red, purple, scarlet, coral, and pink.

Pitta
Eat: Leafy greens, potatoes, fish, dairy, nuts and seeds, coconut, lime, dried beans, peppermint, avocados, melons, pomegranates, mangos, asparagus, cabbage, cucumber, zucchini, basmati and white rice, eggs, legumes, honey, ghee, milk, coconut and olive oil, rhubarb, and quinoa.
Do Not Eat: Salty or spicy foods, raw onion, mustard, peppers, cheese, tomatoes, yogurt, fried foods, oranges, pineapples, grapefruits, lemons, and coffee.
Exercise: Cycling, fast walking, hiking, yoga exercises such as cat/cow, standing and balancing poses, tai chi, stretching, and gentle exercise.
Gemstones: Pittas should surround themselves with diamonds, aquamarine, emeralds, pearls, and blue sapphire.
Colors: Pitta’s need pastel colors, such as blues, whites, light pinks, and soft yellows.

These are just a few of the ways that you can balance your doshas. Ayurveda teaches us that the number one way to live a long, healthy, and happy life, one free of illness and disease, is to work on balancing your doshas every day. Some of the more intense ways to balance your dosha including incorporating a yoga routine, a detox, and a strict diet each day that specifically targets your dosha. You can include other types of exercise as well. Research which exercise, food, and practices are good for you.

There are different types of meditation that have been proven to balance the doshas, including guided meditation, silent meditation, chanting meditation, and walking meditation. You can find the type of meditation that works best with your dosha and incorporate it into your life. Meditation is beneficial on so many aspects of your life.

There are mantras, chants, affirmations, foods, types of journaling, spirituality, mental awareness practices, detoxifying, spices, reading materials, herbs, essential oils, and so many other things you can do daily to balance your doshas. A great book that helps to guide you and give you tips and hints about your doshas is Llewellyn’s Book of Natural Remedies; in writing this book, I have incorporated many doshic practices throughout as a way to bring natural healing to those doshic illnesses that befall almost everyone.

Learning about which time of the day is the best for you to sleep, wake, exercise, work, and play is another important part of understanding your dosha type. Understanding how eating seasonally, and which foods to eat is probably the most important thing you can do for your future health. Discovering what illnesses you are prone to can help you to eliminate them from your life by completing a few simple steps each day. I urge you to study your dosha and how to bring balance to your life. This practice will benefit you spiritually, mentally, and physically more than any pill or drug ever will.

New First Book Study Tackles National Issue of Banned Books

0

More than 1,500 educators report on book bans and the damaging impact they are having on teacher morale and student learning

In a new study released by First Book Research & Insights, educators report that the national conversation around book challenges and bans is negatively impacting their classrooms, profession, and student learning. More than 1,500 educators serving children in under-resourced communities responded to the First Book survey to reveal educator perceptions on book restrictions in their school districts, and their impact on student learning.

Through this study, educators discussed the destructive impact that book bans are having on teacher morale. The study revealed that book bans have a chilling effect whether or not teachers are facing book bans in their districts. The survey found that 71 percent of educators, regardless of whether their district has faced bans, believe book banning undermines their expertise, makes them feel distrusted, and increases their stress. These detrimental effects translate into the classroom as nearly two-thirds of educators said that book banning is having a negative impact on their ability to teach.

“Educators serving students in low-income, under-resourced communities remain unheard in the discussion – and they are a critical voice because of their role in supporting student academic growth while managing the negative effects of ongoing actions to ban books,” says Kyle Zimmer, president and CEO of First Book. “The effort to restrict access to books has excessively targeted diverse books, which we know are indispensable in engaging kids, improving student reading scores, and developing a strong sense of self and empathy for others. These books empower young learners to foster a lifelong love of reading.”

Of the more than 1,500 educator respondents, one-third report facing book bans, challenges, or restrictions in their school district. Although only 7 percent of educators have removed books from their classrooms due to book bans, this study reveals the negative and chilling impacts that reach far beyond the districts that are facing bans. Approximately 15 percent have preemptively removed books from their libraries. Eighteen percent of educators have indicated that specific titles have been banned in their school district.

By capturing the experiences and perceptions of educators working on the ground in classrooms, this new study offers insights into the negative impact of book bans on student success in the classroom. In the survey, 72 percent indicated that restricting book access decreases students’ engagement in reading. More than a third of educators noted that book bans discourage students’ critical thinking, and 78 percent reported that students are reading more when given the choice to read banned books.

These findings come on the heels of another study produced by First Book Research & Insights, the organization’s research arm that conducts studies of its network of more than 575,000 educators. The recent Diverse Books Impact Study report, which was released in September, highlights the positive impacts of diverse books in classroom libraries. In the six-month pilot study, after adding diverse books to their classroom libraries, educators reported that reading scores increased by 3 percentage points higher than national annual expected averages, and collective classroom reading time increased by 4 hours per week on average. Classrooms that added bilingual and LGBTQ+ titles reported the greatest improvements.

The findings on student outcomes reinforce educators’ consistent call for diverse titles to support student achievement.

“Educators have expressed their wealth of knowledge and expertise through First Book’s research on both the impact of diverse books and book banning,” says Zimmer. “This study proves that the targeted removal of diverse titles in the midst of a national literacy crisis is detrimental to the academic growth of our children and demoralizing for the educators serving them. And this is an issue for all children, no matter their zip code or identity. Kids who do not have exposure to other cultures and identities will be at a disadvantage.”

First Book’s full report on the banned books survey is available to download here. And the full Diverse Books Impact Study Report can be downloaded here.

Banned Books Week (October 1 – 7, 2023)

0

From the ALA::::

“This is a dangerous time for readers and the public servants who provide access to reading materials. Readers, particularly students, are losing access to critical information, and librarians and teachers are under attack for doing their jobs.”
– Deborah Caldwell-Stone, director of the ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom

Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. For more than 40 years, the annual event has brought together the entire book community — librarians, teachers, booksellers, publishers, writers, journalists, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted for removal or restriction in libraries and schools. By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship.

In a time of intense political polarization, library staff in every state are facing an unprecedented number of attempts to ban books. ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom ALA documented 1,269 demands to censor library books and resources in 2022, the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data about censorship in libraries more than 20 years ago. The unparalleled number of reported book challenges in 2022 nearly doubles the 729 book challenges reported in 2021. Of the record 2,571 unique titles targeted for censorship, most were by or about LGBTQIA+ persons and Black, Indigenous, and people of color.

The theme for Banned Books Week 2023 is “Let Freedom Read.” When we ban books, we’re closing off readers to people, places, and perspectives. But when we stand up for stories, we unleash the power that lies inside every book. We liberate the array of voices that need to be heard and the scenes that need to be seen. Let freedom read!

“On my pull list by the time I got to page five.”—Mark Waid (Kingdom Come)

“Black Hammer is the maddest, most brilliant comic I’ve read in years.”—Mark Millar (Kick Ass)

“Jeff Lemire’s Black Hammer feels like it’s walking two roads—one honoring the past of superhero comics, and one forging a path into the future of the genre.”—Cullen Bunn (Harrow County)

“Black Hammer feels like a superhero story through an X-Files lens; it’s strange and melancholy and real. The tale evokes an immense world filled with typically deep Lemire-ian themes of isolation, joy and simplicity. I can’t wait to see where he goes from here.” —Charles Soule (Star Wars: Poe Dameron, Letter 44)

Guest Post: A Colonial Tavern, A Civil War Ghost & A Missing Person By Ellen Butler

A Colonial Tavern, A Civil War Ghost & A Missing Person By Ellen Butler

I had such fun writing the last book in the Karina Cardinal mystery series, Spectral Revelations. The story begins when Karina’s Aunt Vera supposedly goes on a trip, and even though her leaving initially appears above board, Karina soon realizes things are not what they seem. In the usual form, Karina must solve the mystery of her missing Aunt Vera, who lives and works in Colonial Williamsburg (CW). With the help of her sister, the intrepid Silverthorne Security fellows, and a mischievous Civil War ghost, Karina delves into the investigation. For those who haven’t been to CW, it was the capital of the Virginia Colony from 1699 to 1780 and played a significant role in the American Revolution. The heart of CW is a historic district and living-history museum where actors in period costume depict daily colonial life in the streets, stores, and workshops.

If you have visited CW in Virginia, you probably heard about the many ghosts that haunt the area. Plenty of tour companies offer spooky nighttime excursions throughout the Historic Triangle area which are very popular during the month of October. When I was brainstorming the latest Karina Cardinal mystery, and determined it would take place in Williamsburg, I knew I’d have to incorporate a ghost into my story.

The ghost I created for the story was inspired by Lieutenant Disosway, a ghost who is said to haunt the Palmer House, near the Capitol Building at the end of Duke of Gloucester Street. I read about Lieutenant Disosway in The Hauntings of Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown, by Jackie Eileen Behrend. In her book, Behrend recounts a haunting tale told by the Tuckers, a family who once lived in the Palmer House during the late 1800s. The Tuckers recounted a gentle soldier in Union garb who would turn up sitting in their parlor smoking a pipe. Further research led the Tuckers to identify the ghost as Lieutenant Disosway, who was appointed as a federal provost marshal to oversee the city of Williamsburg at the ripe age of twenty-four. He was billeted to Palmer House. However, one-night, inebriated Union soldiers began harassing some of the local ladies. Disosway ran to Market Square to put a stop to the threats. Unfortunately, this angered one of the drunk soldiers. He pulled a pistol and shot Disosway on sight. The lieutenant was carried back to Palmer House, where he died two hours later.

During their time in CW, I sent Karina and her entourage to eat at my favorite colonial restaurant, the King’s Arms Tavern on Duke of Gloucester Street. She had to eat my favorite dish on the menu, Peanut Soup. This thick and creamy soup is rich in flavor and texture, and the first time my husband and I ate it, we asked if the recipe was available to purchase. Our server kindly brought us a photocopy of the recipe. The soup is so popular, the tavern has put the recipe in books and made it publicly available online. Since it’s perfect for a cool fall day, I’m sharing it with you here.

If you ever get the chance to visit CW, be sure to take a ghost tour, and don’t miss eating at one of the Taverns. You won’t be disappointed! Bring along a copy of Spectral Revelations and visit all the places Karina goes. Be sure to tag me with your pics on social media.

King’s Arms Tavern Peanut Soup Recipe (Serves 10-12)

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 celery ribs, finely chopped
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 8 cups chicken stock
  • 2 cups smooth peanut butter
  • 1 3/4 cups light cream or half-and-half
  • 1 tsp hot pepper sauce (optional)
  • Finely chopped salted peanuts, for garnish

In large saucepan, over medium heat, melt butter. Add onion and celery and cook. Stir for three to five minutes until softened. Stir in flour and cook two minutes longer. Pour in chicken stock, increase heat to high, and bring to a boil, stirring constantly.  Reduce heat to medium and cook, stirring often, until slightly reduced and thickened – about 15 minutes. Pour into a sieve set over a large bowl and strain, pushing hard on the solids to extract as much flavor as possible.

Return liquid to the saucepan or pot. Whisk peanut butter and cream into liquid. Warm over low heat, whisking often for about five minutes. Do not boil. Serve warm, garnished with chopped peanuts. Peanut Soup is often served with a sippet – or a small piece of bread.

Ellen’s latest release Spectral Revelations is releasing this week……just in time for Halloweeeeennnnnn……here’s a peek……

Is Karina’s missing aunt on vacation…or on the lam?

Karina is trying to keep her mind on getting a cosponsor for a bill, but it’s tough with her Mom blowing up her phone. By the time Karina finally stops hitting “ignore”, Mom is frantic. It appears Karina’s Aunt Vera has disappeared, fibbed to her employer about the reason for her absence, even abandoned her beloved cat, Nightshade—which is completely out of character. Karina would bet her favorite pair of designer shoes that Vera is in some kind of trouble.

However, when Karina hauls her cookies from D.C. to historic Williamsburg to search Vera’s house, she finds nothing suspicious. Except for a mischievous Civil War ghost who scares the bejesus out of her and keeps trashing Vera’s office. Until Karina realizes his seemingly random ectoplasmic tantrums have a purpose—revealing key evidence.

Something is definitely fishy, but the clues aren’t adding up. And as the spirit’s visitations become more urgent, Karina calls on reinforcements for help—her latest squeeze Rick Donovan and her sister Jillian. Because the cops are following faulty leads, which could put Vera on the wrong end of an arrest warrant … if she’s found alive.
