Mrs. Claus and the Trouble with Turkeys by Liz Ireland

It’s year-round Christmas cheer in this creative and witty mystery series featuring a unique heroine who’s married to the real-life Santa Claus and living in the North Pole. In Santaland, it’s beginning to look a lot like…Thanksgiving…and in between the festivities, April Claus must track down a killer hiding amid a parade of suspects…

At Castle Kringle, the elves are excitedly arranging their first ever Thanksgiving day feast. April’s husband, Nick—the real Santa—has some misgivings, since it’s tough to get ready for Christmas when everyone is obsessed with helium balloons and pie recipes. Chaos erupts when Gobbles, the live turkey imported for the castle feast, is bird-napped. That crime is quickly overshadowed at a pre-Thanksgiving potluck when Nick’s cousin, Elspeth, face-plants into her mashed potatoes—dead.

Someone poisoned Elspeth, and April believes Constable Crinkle is hauling the wrong suspect off to jail. An ominous message, written in what seems to be blood and urging April to stop investigating, only convinces her more. But who’s really to blame? Where is Gobbles the turkey? And can April solve a double helping of mystery in time for everyone to sit down to a non-deadly dinner together?

Prometheus In Chains By Rich Davis

Red 5 Comics is thrilled to announce that its best selling comic book Prometheus In Chains #1 by rising horror master Rich Davis will receive a monumental second printing with brand new cover art by world renowned air brush artist Jay Ferguson! According to Red 5 Comics co-founder Scott Chitwood, the first printing of Prometheus In Chains #1 sold out very quickly through Diamond Comics Distributors yet orders kept coming in. “I think the success of Christopher Nolan’s brilliant film Oppenheimer has rekindled a desire for “atomic” age science fiction and horror,” said Chitwood. Davis’s tragically personal take on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein takes place from 1939-1969 in the lead up to, during and through the fallout from the Manhattan Project. J Robert Oppenheimer, Albert Einstein and other historical figures make appearances in Prometheus In Chains albeit in uniquely twisted ways.

Best known for Cult of Dracula, his best selling and award winning spin on Bram Stoker’s seminal work, writer/creator Rich Davis has made his bones re-imagining some of the most iconic figures in horror history. “I like to subvert expectations and challenge everything readers “know” about these characters and their worlds. I want to tell the stories that their authors intended, but do so in ways that no one expects,” says Davis. Davis’s works have been widely praised for their unique perspectives and unexpected points of views while holding their source materials in high regard. Prometheus In Chains holds true to those ideals. It has been almost universally well received by both critics and readers alike.

Second printings are fairly common from major publishers such as Marvel and DC. They’re much less so in the world of small press publishers like Red 5. Chitwood says, “It’s a rare opportunity to offer our fans a second printing. It means that we sold out the initial print run and still couldn’t meet demand for the book. We can’t fumble this one.” Davis adds, “We had to go all in for this one. Scott and I agreed that we needed to mark this moment with spectacular cover art. I knew immediately that I wanted Jay Ferguson to do it.” Ferguson is well known and highly respected in the underground/indie comics world. He prefers to work with creators like Davis who allow him the freedom to create and don’t try to tame his art. When asked about this version of Frankenstein, Ferguson had this to say, “I always envision Frankenstein with a dark sadness and a bleak feel.” Davis’s take definitely checks those boxes.

Traditionally, in most adaptations of Frankenstein it is Victor’s arrogance that drives him to steal fire from the gods by conquering death. Davis offers a different perspective. “I chose Victor’s grief as his motivation. It humanized him. Made him more relatable. More interesting in my opinion. It was hell to write. I had to face my own demons. But also cathartic.” In this story, Elizabeth Frankenstein dies of cancer she developed while working alongside Victor on the Manhattan Project. Davis’s version of Victor is fueled by depression, addiction and PTSD. Prometheus In Chains mirrors Davis’s own struggles with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. His wife Amber Davis tragically passed away following a botched transplant surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in 2021. “There are a lot of us out there with PTSD. People from all walks of life. Veterans. Police officers. First responders. People in the medical field. We don’t talk about it. Men especially. We’re conditioned to hide from our emotions. That’s not healthy. If anything positive can come of this, it’s my hope that one person struggling with PTSD will read this story about a man with PTSD written by a man working through his own grief and instead of picking up a gun, he picks up a phone,” Davis adds that every issue of Prometheus In Chains will prominently feature the toll free number for the National PTSD Hotline: 866-903-3787.

Talking with Author Amanda Cox

Hi Amanda! Welcome to Reader’s Entertainment. We’re excited to talk about your latest release HE SHOULD HAVE TOLD THE BEES. First, give us a quick look at the novel.

He Should Have Told the Bees is the story of two young women, Beck and Callie, who find themselves named on one man’s trust. Beck is his faithful daughter, who shared his love of keeping bees. Callie, a stranger, is mystified by her connection to her benefactor. Accepting the gift will give Callie the stability that’s always been out of reach, but to do so will mean taking away the only home Beck has ever known.

As the two women search for the truth behind why their lives have suddenly become entangled and negotiate their shared ownership of Walsh Farm, they discover new pathways to hope.

He Should Have Told the Bees is packed with complex secrets. What was the inspiration behind your new work?

This story and all its layers happened little by little, each little thread coming from different touchpoints in my life. But I’d have to say it all started with my love for bees and my passion for crafting stories that explore family dynamics and pathways to relational healing.

You have two main protagonists in your new novel, Beckett (Beck) Walsh and Callie Peterson. Can you please provide a brief description of both of these women?

Beck is a country girl, and farm life is in her blood. She has lived a very isolated life on her farm, in part because she loves it so much and in part because of some early childhood experiences that have had a significant impact on her life. She is a little rough around the edges, but she has a good heart. Even though she has some significant struggles to overcome, she is strong and independent in a lot of ways.

Callie was raised by a mother whose life was consumed by substance abuse, which caused Callie to grow up at a very young age. She’s worked very long and hard to build a stable life with a business of her own, but things keep happening that push her goals just out of reach. She is resilient and compassionate, broken but determined to grow and heal.

Beck Walsh is a beekeeper who has worked alongside her father in their apiary. What type of research was required to accurately portray all the details and tasks that come with beekeeping?

I have always been fascinated with bees. I began to get serious about learning about beekeeping several years ago. After spending a lot of time learning about their care, my daughter and I started keeping a few hives of our own. Many, many hours have been spent reading books, scrolling through online forums, watching videos, and tending my own hives. (I am an amateur, not a professional like Beck!)

Beck struggles with anxiety. Why did you choose to include her struggles as part of your story line?

Even if readers don’t struggle with anxiety on the same level that Beck does, most people have some level of experience with it, whether as a short-lived emotional state or as an ongoing battle. While I was writing this book, the world was going through a lot of changes—from people being quarantined to returning to the workplace. Struggles with anxiety were on the rise. In writing Beck, I hoped to craft a character who would connect with readers sharing the same battle.

In addition to Beck’s struggles, Callie’s mother, Lindy, is also struggling with her own issues. Can you please provide some insight on how this initially affect’s Callie’s decision about the trust?

Lindy’s life has been plagued with substance abuse. After being estranged from Callie for several months, Lindy shows up asking her daughter to help her get into a rehabilitative program. Callie, who has been working so hard to get her new business off the ground, suddenly finds herself saddled with her mother’s bills. Callie feels like she, once again, will have to choose between the fresh, new, healthy life she is trying to build and helping her mother. When she is named in the trust, the financial gain that could come from selling her portion of the inheritance could be enough to allow her to both get her business going and get excellent care provided for her mother.

You have a master’s degree in professional counseling. How do you feel your knowledge in this area has helped you create real and relatable characters?

As a counselor I spent time sitting with individuals and families on their most difficult days, serving as a guide while they processed their thoughts and emotions and helping them take steps toward healing. Listening, observing, and simply being present with another person has always been a passion of mine. When forming characters, I invest a lot of my time imagining who they are and what life experiences have shaped them. I “sit with” these characters in order to bring them to life on the page in an authentic way. As a counselor I functioned as a guide toward healing for my counseling clients. As a novelist I strive to do the same for my characters, using the story as their guide on the path to healing.

What do you hope readers will gain from reading He Should Have Told the Bees?

I hope that this book inspires those who are on their own healing journey to stay the course and continue to do the hard work involved in the healing process. I hope it helps those with struggling friends and family members to grow in empathy and compassion. And, of course, I do hope to spread my love of honeybees!

How can readers connect with you?

Readers can connect with me on my website, www.amandacoxwrites.com. I am also on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter as @AmandaCoxWrites.

Where can readers purchase a copy of He Should Have Told the Bees?

He Should Have Told the Bees is available wherever books are sold! I would especially love it if you purchased it from your favorite local bookstore.

Thank you so much for joining us today, Amanda.

Readers, here’s a quick look at HE SHOULD HAVE TOLD THE BEES which releases today!

Uncovering long-held family secrets may sting at first–but the result can be sweeter than honey

Beekeeper Beckett Walsh is living her dream, working alongside her father in their apiary, until his untimely death sends her world into a tailspin. She suddenly finds she must deal with a new part owner of the family business–one who is looking to sell the property. Beck cannot fathom why her father would put her into the position to lose everything they built together.

When Callie Peterson is named in the trust of a man she’s never heard of, she’s not sure what to do. Her fledgling business has just taken wing and her mother has reentered her life asking for help getting into rehab for her lifelong substance abuse issues, making Callie’s financial situation rather . . . precarious. She’s sure she has no right to someone else’s farm, but the money from the sale could solve her problems and give her the stability she’s always craved.

As these two women navigate their present conundrum, they will discover a complex and entangled past full of secrets–and the potential for a brighter future for both of them.

Moms Who Survived Wildfires Publish Children’s Book Helping Parents and Kids Cope with Disaster

0

Pair of Northern California Moms Who Survived Series of Catastrophic Wildfires Publish Children’s Books to Help Other Parents and Kids Cope with Disaster

Both women now work in disaster response – one as the founder of the nonprofit Volunteer Fire Foundation, the other as a clinical psychologist who specializes in trauma

Jacqui Jorgeson, author of a new picture book called “Little Buck the Fire Truck, is the founder and executive director of the nonprofit Volunteer Fire Foundation and mother to a young son who is all too familiar with wildfire.

“He’s four and has already lived through three historic fires,” Jorgeson said. “This is a new era. We need tools to help our kids view challenges as opportunities to develop not only resilience but compassion.”

Jorgeson launched her organization in early 2020 to support underfunded volunteer firefighters. Eight months later, another megafire sparked. Surprisingly, so did her imagination.

“I was delivering supplies to the crew of a 40-year-old fire engine and I remember thinking, ‘This isn’t a wildland engine, it’s a children’s book character.'”

That night, she wrote the first draft of a manuscript about a fire engine that must overcome his limitations when wildfire threatens his town.

DiAngelo Publications will release “Little Buck the Fire Truck” August 22 and Jorgeson said she will donate 50% of her portion of profits to VFF.

Living Popups has animated the book in augmented reality, with Emmy-winning actor Richard Schiff voicing the title character.

To access the animation, readers scan a QR code on the back cover and download an app, which allows Little Buck to leap from book to screen.

“My six-year-old doesn’t always connect with books, but he was completely captivated by the augmented reality component of ‘Little Buck’,” said Sonoma County psychologist Dr. Carrie Lara. “It’ll be such a great resource to help young children who have lived through wildfire.”

Lara is no stranger to children’s books – she’s published four of them with the American Psychological Association’s Magination Press, including “Out of the Fires: A Journal of Resilience and Recovery After Disaster,” released last month.

“Out of the Fire” reads like the journal of a ten-year-old boy, complete with drawings and news clippings that reflect his attempts to make sense of his experience as a wildfire survivor.

Lara has seen disaster trauma play out in her clinical work with children and families and in her own home, which she evacuated during the 2017 and 2019 fires.

“The Kincade fire came as close as two blocks and a chicken farm away,” she said.

Lara and her husband grabbed prepared go-bags and fled with their two children, cat, and two dogs. It was the first of three times they would evacuate that same night.

“These fires aren’t going away,” Lara said. “We need to provide our children with not only comfort but real coping strategies. Books like “Out of the Fires” and “Little Buck the Fire Truck,” especially with its AR element, are an accessible, effective way to do that.”

CHRISTOPHER GOLDEN, TIM LEBBON, AND PETER BERGTING REINVENT DRACULA WITH “MORTAL TERROR”

A vampire-flipped Dracula in which mortality means life…and life means death.

Christopher Golden, Tim Lebbon, and Peter Bergting, the creative team behind the illustrated prose horror novella Festival, reunite for the new horror comic series Mortal Terror! Golden and Lebbon will write the series with art by Bergting, colors by Chris O’Halloran, and letters by Clem Robins. Mortal Terror #1 will also feature a variant cover by Mike Mignola (Hellboy).

Vampires Jonathan Harker, Lucy Westenra, and Mina Murray live in underground London, trying to keep the undead city safe from the rumored mortals above who seek to give them life, only to kill them. But when the authorities refuse to believe mortals, let alone the mysterious Count Dracula, are anything more than myth, they are on their own to keep their city eternally dead.

Mortal Terror #1 (of 4) creeps into the light and comic shops November 22, 2023. It is now available to pre-order for $4.99 from your local comic shop.

Be sure to follow Dark Horse Comics on social media for more news, announcements, and updates!

Praise for Christopher Golden’s All Hallows:

All Hallows is the work of a master of horror, characterization, and pace. It’s destined to be a classic, one that you should grab and devour immediately, and then revisit in October, when the air is crisp and the pumpkins are carved and the shadows grow deeper and darker.”—Cemetery Dance

All Hallows bring the horror, literally and metaphorically, to the backyard of suburban homes, and that makes it feel more immediate. Golden clearly loves all things horror, and this novel, his love letter to Halloween, shines with that love, and that makes it a lot of fun to read.”—Locus Magazine

Praise for Tim Lebbon’s Eden:

“Lebbon offers weirdly beautiful and horrific images that call to mind those delivered in the theatrical version of Annihilation, and many times I was left chilled by his depictions of a remorseless Nature determined to thrive and grow. A truly gripping and horrifying read.”—Cemetery Dance

“Lebbon excels at building a world that is both wondrous and deeply unsettling…”—Publishers Weekly

Praise for Peter Bergting:

“Peter is one of those very rare creatures—a wonderful illustrator and designer, a creator of striking single images—who also understands that comics are a whole different ball hame and does both beautifully. It’s been a job and an honor to work with him.”—Mike Mignola, Hellboy creator

“[Bergting] can do grand fantasy elements and then switch to intimate character moments with apparent ease.”—Mark Tweedale, Multiversity Comics

“[Bergting], just like the artists that came before him in this world, has an excellent hold on storytelling, which is the most important aspect of these types of comic stories…”—Pop Culture Uncovered

New York Times bestselling authors Cheryl Strayed, Steven Rowley and Rebecca Yarros among the special guests who will gather to raise support for the Foundation’s nationwide literacy work.

The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy is pleased to announce that it will host its signature biennial event, the National Celebration of Reading, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.

The National Celebration of Reading brings together members of the Bush family, bestselling authors and entertainers, and special guests to advance the mission of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. This year’s lineup of award-winning authors will include Helena Andrews-Dyer (“The Mamas”), Jeffrey Nussbaum (“Undelivered: The Never-Heard Speeches That Would Have Rewritten History”), Steven Rowley (“The Guncle,” “The Celebrants”), Cheryl Strayed (“Wild,” “Tiny Beautiful Things”) and Rebecca Yarros (“Fourth Wing,” “In the Likely Event”).

“I’m honored to take part in the National Celebration of Reading because I believe in the power of words and stories to transform our ideas about ourselves, others and the world. Through reading, we’re enriched, enlightened, educated and entertained,” said New York Times bestselling author Cheryl Strayed. “Literacy is essential not only because it empowers us as individuals by expanding our opportunities, but because it allows us – through reading – to feel connected to others across every divide. It reminds us that the our most deeply felt experiences are universal.”

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jonathan Capehart, host of “The Saturday Show with Jonathan Capehart” and “The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart” on MSNBC, will serve as emcee for the event. The evening will also include a musical performance from Franc D’Ambrosio, best known for his long-running portrayal of the lead role in the Tony Award-winning musical, “The Phantom of the Opera.”

The Honorable Mike J. Rogers (MI) and Kristi Rogers will serve as chairs for the 2023 event, which aims to increase awareness of our country’s adult literacy crisis, raise support for the Foundation’s work and celebrate the life-changing power of literacy.

“Children who struggle to read lead to adults who struggle, and it has created a cycle of poverty and crime in the United States that is our silent crisis,” said Mike and Kristi Rogers. “This is a crisis we can fix, and we must come together as Americans to correct the intolerable low literacy levels that plague our children, students and fellow Americans. The National Celebration of Reading and the Barbara Bush Foundation provide powerful, proven steps forward. Please join us in supporting and winning this fight.”

The event will also provide the opportunity to honor leaders at the both the national and grassroots levels who have made significant contributions toward a more literate America. Recipients of the 2023 Barbara Bush National Literacy Honors Award will be the American Library Association and social media influencer Oliver James. The 2023 Dyer Pearl Literacy Award, which recognizes local organizations, will be presented to Bernie’s Book Bank (Chicago, Illinois) and Trident Literacy Association (Charleston, South Carolina).

“From hearing her favorite authors read from their works to meeting learners who have improved their lives through literacy, my mom loved every minute of the Foundation’s Celebration of Reading events,” said Doro Bush Koch, the Barbara Bush Foundation’s honorary chair. “We’re so grateful to the authors and special guests who will share their time and talents with us this year, and we’re looking forward to an incredible evening.”

Sponsorships are available for the National Celebration of Reading, which include exclusive benefits such as a private, intimate luncheon with members of the Bush family and guest authors and preferred seating at the event.

“What Barbara Bush knew more than three decades ago is still true today: literacy changes lives,” said Andrew Roberts, interim president and CEO. “The National Celebration of Reading is the perfect opportunity to honor her legacy, celebrate the transformative power of reading and carry on the work that she began to build a stronger, more equitable America through literacy.”
