Behind The Words With Authors Charles Breakfield and Rox Burkey

0

Reader’s today we are getting a ‘two-for-one’ author special. Please welcome Charles Breakfield and Rox Burkey to the blog. They are the co-authors of The Enigma Series, a fast-paced series of techo-thrillers. First, give our readers a look at your real life and your writing life.

Breakfield and Burkey, as a team, bring a unique blend of expertise and personal interests to their writing. As the Enigma Series’ CTO, Breakfield leverages his decades of technology expertise to bring innovative technothriller elements into storytelling. His deep knowledge of World War II history, extensive world travel, and cultural exchanges provide multidimensionality to the people, places, and journeys readers discover in the stories. Beyond writing, Charles enjoys wine tasting, winemaking, Harley riding, cooking new recipes and extravaganzas, and woodworking, which adds a personal touch to his work.

Enigma Series’ COO, Burkey, uses her extensive professional knowledge to optimize technology and business investments influencing character experiences and situations within the stories. Readers can discover the distinctive characteristics of people she has met woven into contemporary situations between the covers. Rox treasures her family (including the puppies) and friends, reading and reviewing books, and traveling whenever possible. But one of her most cherished activities is meeting readers at various events, including book clubs. This interaction with readers is what truly makes her work meaningful.

Where you’re from, where you live? Is writing your full-time job?

We work and live in Texas, primarily Dallas. Rox has a full-time job but manages to help craft short stories and novels while helping her business customers. Charles is fulltime working for the Enigma partnership to build and ship new stories through our publishing arm ICABOD Press.

How long have you been writing?

Rox Burkey is the catalyst for the series. She got us into writing non-fiction for Auerbach back in 2010. When we tired of doing tech manuals, she postulated, why not techno-thrillers? Then, she challenged Breakfield to work with her in cozy mysteries. The mantra is, “Why can’t we do that genre too?” We’ve been at fiction since 2012. We have 12 novels in the Enigma Series, 2 novels in the Enigma Heirs series, 3 novels in the Magnolia Bluff Crime Chronicle series, and gobs of short stories. We’ve been at it a while.

What does your typical writing day look like?

We scan the technical horizon, looking for the next element to explore or learn how it can make people vulnerable to power or greed. It isn’t challenging to find new material for cyber thugs to use to their advantage, and the cyber heroes who say no then stop them. Life situations are a portion of the stories that make them relatable to contemporary people in our connected digital world. We usually speak once a day to discuss our character or story plot findings to see how they might work.

Tell us about your latest release? Where the idea came from? Perhaps some fun moments, or not so fun moments?

The Ransom Enigma will be our newest thriller mystery with a release date of Aug 20th, 2024. We were on the road to an author book signing and Rox was driving while Charles took notes. Rox drives too fast for Charles, so he distracts himself by talking about the upcoming novel and scribbling down notes rather than look at the road. By the time we got to our destination, The Ransom Enigma had been fully sketched out. It will be the 27th installment of the Magnolia Bluff Crime Chronicles that we participate in with the Underground Authors.

Could you share one detail from your current release with readers that they might not find in the book?

The backstory of JoAnn Wagner (now Mrs. Rodreguiz) is that she is a world class supermodel from Brazil. She and her husband JJ, who works in cybersecurity, need a place to go where the fawning public can’t ruin their couple quiet time. They’ve come to Magnolia Bluff to spend quite time as regular people in a small Texas town. The thing is they keep bumping into crimes being committed and end up usually helping the local police. This will be their third crime discovery but with a twist.

Who has been the most difficult character for you to write? Why?

Breakfield and Burkey have an unfair advantage in this area. There will always be characters that we each struggle with from time to time but when one of us is having a problem, we hammer on it together. Rox is very strong on character development and will often infuse the extra secret sauce needed to craft the villain or reluctant hero.

If you could be one of your characters for a day which character would it be?

Actually we each write better when we do become one of the characters. It is quite fair to report that we have each become one of the characters, sometimes for days at a time. The storytelling output yields some amazing results.

What’s your take on research and how do you do it?

At no time do we take information being inserted into our novels for granted. Everything is researched to either confirm what we think we know or give us a factual background for the storytelling to insure there are no non-factual, heroic statements that cannot be defended.

What’s the most fun thing about being an author?

Rox has assured Charles on more than one occasion that we can kill people in our books and not go to jail.

Do you write multiple books at once, or one at a time?

Frequently we will focus on our main novels for the year but slip in a short story or two just because. We like to build two main novels a year but to do that we usually sketch out the one for the second half of the year while cranking on the first novel of the year.

What’s your favorite writing tool? — software, app, notebook, etc.

We sketch out an outline for the manuscript in an Excel spreadsheet to capture chapters and characters to be used. Then work off our standard Word doc template and sort of follow the outline. We leverage our patent pending technique of “literary ping-pong” to bat the draft document back and forth until it is done.

Are there any particular authors that have influenced how you write?

For Breakfield it would be Kevin J. Anderson and for Burkey it is J.R.R. Tolkien.

Do you have a secret talent readers would be surprised by?

Charles’ love of wine tastings, cooking, woodworking, and Harley riding. Some of these elements are found throughout the tales. He continues to try to teach Burkey humor. Rox enjoys family, learning, people-watching, travel, and cooking.

Your favorite go to drink or food when the world goes crazy?

Charles and Rox both enjoy sampling the fermented grape varieties.

What is your writing kryptonite?

For both of us – interruptions with lots of drama.

What is the one question you never get ask at interviews, but wish you did? Ask and answer it.

We really like telling people how proud we are to have Derek Shoales as the voice actor who helped us bring to market our audiobooks. We have snippets on our website and book trailers as well.

Quite a fascinating background on you both and the series! Thank you for joining us today. Readers, here’s a look at the latest book in the Enigma Series – THE RANSOM ENIGMA:

Jo and JJ Rodreguiz finished their vacation dream home in Magnolia Bluff. To celebrate their accomplishment, they invite the town residents to their housewarming.

Emails are sent. Lily offers to provide all the side dishes to complement the barbeque. Chief Tommy Jager bartends until the last guest leaves. The teenagers act as servers. Guests dance outside until the wee hours. Toasts are made to honor JJ and Jo’s dearest friends. Max the Labrador will clean up the crumbs.

After the last guest departs, JJ finds a housewarming gift addressed to Jo. She excitedly opens it and gasps with dismay. Someone left behind not a present but a blackmail letter. Jo crumbles into tears, fearing they must sell and never return. Her outraged husband swears to kill the wretched blackmailer. Unfortunately, the Chief of Police cannot unhear the threat.

  • Two days later, the police find JJ unconscious next to the dead blackmailer suspect.
  • Can Jo clear JJ’s name as the murderer while preserving their anonymity?
  • Who will help her navigate this investigation?
  • Who knows the blackmailer?

All the world’s problems rest on her shoulders as her greatest love and husband lie in a coma.

The Mystery of the Haunted Library” – A Spine-Tingling, Globetrotting Adventure for Young Readers

Gallopade International recently announced the release of an all-new series by award-winning author Carole Marsh. In “The Mystery of the Haunted Library,” the author-turned-character and her rescue pup, Coconut, join four adventurous kids from the fictional Spanish Moss School as they travel to solve mysteries in some of the world’s most famous libraries.

Inspired by librarians at the American Association of School Libraries (AASL) conference, Marsh’s latest release honors libraries’ importance in shaping young minds. Her passion shines through, encouraging readers to view these institutions as hubs of discovery and learning, not just knowledge repositories.

“I grew up going to libraries. If I could, I would have lived in one. Sitting in a chair and reading until the library closed was my favorite thing from age six. We never want kids to think of libraries as boring or unessential,” says Marsh. “A library is where answers are, where we find our passions, and where we match our interests to what we might become!”

“My goal is to highlight that libraries are cool places to be, to present examples of kids of all ages interacting with adults in today’s world and building mutual interests and respect, to show young people collaborating, solving, and other essential skills,” Marsh states. “After all, they’re going where we can’t go: to a future where kids need the confidence and abilities to change the world!”

The author garnered accolades for her popular “Real Kids – Real Places” series and has created a new cast of characters and adventures for a new generation of readers. In this captivating chapter book series, the author weaves fiction with narrative non-fiction and engaging graphic novel illustrations to keep kids reading as each page-turn reveals a new surprise. Her goal is to instill a love of reading, an appreciation of collaboration to solve problems, and a fascination with historical facts. As a finishing touch, she included Coconut, her real-life rescue pup, in the series, as she has gained a loveable reputation among Marsh’s fan base.

“At a time when kids are stressed, a book can be a companion,” insists the author. “And adding a lively, lovable dog adds charm and comedy like nothing else can!”

The new six-book series for ages 6-14 is now available for purchase at gallopade.com and Amazon.

The Rule of Three By Sam Ripley

The Whisper Man meets the paranoia of The Blair Witch Project in this terrifying suspense thriller about an urban legend coming true.

That’s the one. That’s the girl who’s going to die.

I didn’t believe in the Rule of Three. Not at first. It was just one of those urban myths you hear about all the time. A story my boyfriend told me about a girl cursed by the number three. A girl whose parents had killed themselves after her sibling had died in an accident. Which meant that she was doomed to die too because that’s the Rule of Three.

Bad things always happen in threes, they say, and they are right. Because it’s happening again.

But this time the curse is coming for me. And worst of all?

It’s coming for you, too.

Behind The Words with Susan May Warren

We are welcoming ONE LAST PROMISE author Susan May Warren. Her latest release is book three in her Alaska Air One Rescue Series. Give our readers a look at One Last Promise.

Alaskan rescue pilot Arlo “Moose” Mulligan never expected to find love in the wild country he calls home. But when pretty diner waitress Tillie Young shows up battered one morning, desperately seeking Moose’s help to escape her abusive ex, Rigger, Moose is torn between his duty to protect and his vow to never get attached. Things go from bad to worse when Rigger kidnaps Tillie’s daughter, Hazel. But suddenly, things don’t add up . . . who is Rigger, really, and what secrets is Tillie hiding? This might be Moose’s toughest rescue yet as he navigates secrets, deception, and, most of all, the deepest hopes of his heart. Another edge-of-your seat SAR adventure with the Air One Rescue team.

One Last Promise is the third book in your Alaska Air One Rescue series. How many books are in this series?

There will be four books in the Alaska Air One Rescue series.

What is the connecting element for all of the books in this series?

The theme of second chances and fresh starts is an ongoing element in all the stories, but throughout the series is also the consequences of the reality show that was filmed in book one. Moose and his team have no idea the troubles they stirred with that series . . . and how it will come back to haunt them all!

Will characters from previous books make a reappearance?

Absolutely. So much of this series is about found family, starting with the Air One team. But we also travel to Copper Mountain, the hometown of the Kinsgston brothers, so of course we meet them again, along with some side characters who may appear in future stories. And then there are other characters who just might show up . . . maybe some folks from previous rescue books! You just never know . . .

You deal with some difficult issues in One Last Promise, including kidnapping and revenge. How are you able to sensitively add these topics into your plot?

This story deals a lot with non-custodial kidnapping, and the whys and hows of why that might happen. And, of course, revenge is always about letting our passions lead instead of letting God be in charge, so I explore that nuance also.

Arlo “Moose” Mulligan started Air One Rescue and has made a name for himself. What was his background and how is this useful in his current role?

He is a team leader and a chopper pilot, but it’s his backstory that really plays into this novel—how he started Air One and why, and the secrets he’s hiding. All of this comes out as he tries to save Tillie and her daughter.

How did Moose and Tille Young first meet?

Tillie was his favorite waitress at Skyport Diner.
Although Moose declares he has no room for relationships in his life, he is compelled to help Tillie when she comes to him for help.

Can you provide some insight on why she turned to Moose?

Ah, I can’t say too much, but let’s say that Moose left a big impression on her, and in her desperation, he’s the only one who comes to mind! And being a rescuer by profession doesn’t hurt, either!

You have set your series in Alaska. Why did you choose this location?

I love Alaska, and the story world, along with being majestic and beautiful, is a great place for trouble to happen!

What do you hope readers will gain from reading One Last Promise?

As I said, it’s a story about second chances, but it’s also about God’s involvement in our lives, even when we don’t see it, and the testimony we have even when we think others aren’t watching. I hope my readers will see that God is at work in their lives, and how they live their lives matters.

How can readers connect with you?

Head over to SusanMayWarren.com.

Here’s a look at ONE LAST PROMISE

Moose (Arlo) Mulligan’s biggest grief propelled him into the world of Search and Rescue. After years as a former Navy Rescue Chopper pilot, he returned home to start Air One Rescue—and made a name for himself. He loves his job, his life, and his routines…which include breakfast at the Skyport, at the table of Tillie Young. She’s sweet, and pretty, but Moose has no room in his life for anything more.

And then, Tillie shows up, beaten and desperate…and needs his help.

Tillie Young never thought her ex would track her to Alaska—but somehow he’s found her, and when he kidnaps her daughter, she’ll do anything to get her back. Even enlist help from her favorite grumpy rescuer at table three, Moose Mulligan.

But Moose is no match for a former MMA boxer, and possible child trafficker, right?

Maybe, maybe not, but he’s not going to let another child go missing on his watch. Worse—when Moose finds himself accused as the kidnapper, there’s no way back. Now, he must find the girl, keep Tillie safe and outwit a man fueled by revenge. It will take all of Moose’s Alaskan savvy to protect them, and keep them alive…but who is going to protect him from the love he never saw coming?

Set in the treacherous Alaskan backwoods, it’s a heart-pounding tale of survival, love, and the family Moose never anticipated.

Behind The Words With Jody Hedlund

Hi Jody, welcome to Reader’s Entertainment. We’re excited to be talking about your latest release SAVED BY THE MATCHMAKER. This is the second book in your A SHANAHAN MATCH series. Can you share a little bit about this story with us?

Jody Hedlund: This installment continues the Shanahan saga, an imperfect but loving family, seeking to make happy matches for each of their children. It also involves the young Irish matchmaker that made his first match in book one. Now he might just face his biggest challenge with a surly steamboat captain who doesn’t want to get married but is being pressured into it by his father. The matchmaker also has a feisty redhead who, after a failed marriage, doesn’t want anything to do with love or relationships. In spite of the challenge, this wily matchmaker seems to have a knack for bringing unlikely couples together, and I hope readers will enjoy seeing how he does it this time.

At the beginning of the book, Enya Shanahan is in quite a difficult situation, especially for a woman in the 1840s. What kind of public shame or judgment would a woman in her situation most likely face at that time?

JH: From page one, readers learn that Enya has just gotten an annulment from a marriage that she rushed into with a man she thought loved her but was not who she believed him to be. The hasty marriage caused a scandal. But when Enya finds herself pregnant, her family is rushing to cover up more scandal. In desperation, they turn to the matchmaker for help in finding Enya a spouse who is willing to raise another man’s child as his own.

As with any period in history, the mistakes of children have an impact on the rest of the family, including the family’s reputation in a community. This was especially true of the wealthy and prestigious Shanahan family. Enya’s predicament had the possibility of harming business dealings and social standing for the whole family. It would also ruin Enya’s chances of a normal future because having a baby outside the bounds of marriage was taboo and not culturally acceptable. As a single mother, she and her child would be ostracized and always looked down upon.

Sullivan O’Brien is a man on a mission, literally ferrying souls toward freedom on his steamboat. Where did he get his strong convictions and the courage to do what’s right?

JH: As a giant of a man, Sullivan has always struggled with insecurity over his appearance, especially now that he has scars from the war. In addition he’s quiet and reserved and unexciting. As a result of his inadequacies, he has a heart for helping others who feel degraded, particularly enslaved people.

As a steamboat captain, he decides he’s in a position where he can help save the lives of slaves by transporting them to freedom up the Mississippi River. Although he could face severe consequences if he’s caught aiding a slave, he’s determined to do what’s right anyway.

Both characters have trust issues they must overcome if they are to experience true love. What keeps people from being able to trust? What’s the solution, in your opinion?

JH: Both characters have been deeply hurt by people they once trusted, and as a result they each have a difficult time learning to trust again. Hurt, rejection, and lies are some of the top culprits in eroding trust.

The solution to trusting again is learning to forgive and move on, as well as taking the risk to build new relationships. There’s never a guarantee that we won’t get hurt again, but we can’t let that possibility stop us from loving others and allowing others to love us in return.

What do you think it is about matchmaking that so fascinates us, even today?

JH: We’re such an independent-minded culture, and that spills over into dating relationships. Most people want the freedom to date many people and use the dating process to discover who is most compatible. So the idea of having parents play a significant role in helping to choose a spouse is foreign. And the idea of having a matchmaker choose a spouse is even stranger.

But essentially our dating apps nowadays sort of act as a matchmaker, narrowing down the choices and bringing people together in a way that they might not have been able to do on their own.

What are you most excited for readers to experience as they pick up this historical romance?

JH: This story is a bit heavier than the first one with themes of abandonment, abuse, insecurity, and the issue of slavery taking more prominence. Even so, I’m excited for readers to meet

Sullivan, who is a patient and loving hero as he interacts with Enya and helps her reach a place of healing so that she’s ready for love.

In addition, this book showcases the Great Fire of 1849 in St. Louis; a devastating fire that started among the steamboats along the levy and then spread to the city and raged out of control for hours. I hope readers will appreciate getting a glimpse of this particular event.

What aspect of this story did you enjoy writing the most?

JH: As with the first book, I truly have enjoyed bringing the matchmaker, Bellamy McKenna, to life. He’s been such a quirky, cunning character to write. And with each book he takes even greater shape in my mind, so much so that I’m planning a love story for him!

As a romance reader yourself, are there any romance tropes in this book that you think readers will find especially entertaining?

JH: In addition to the arranged marriage trope, this book contains a very popular trope with the marriage of convenience. It also has Beauty and the Beast vibes, forced proximity, belated love realization, and emotional scars.

What are you working on next?

JH: The next Shanahan to get a love story is Kiernan. His story picks up where book two ends with the aftermath of the Great Fire, as well as the continuation of the cholera epidemic. Amidst it all, the ambitious Kiernan, who is attempting to build his own empire, has to decide what is more important: success or love.

How can readers connect with you?

JH: To stay up to date, I invite readers to join my Facebook Reader Room where I post the most relevant book news and interact with readers. Or readers can visit my website at JodyHedlund.com

Thank you very much for joining us today. Readers, here’s a quick look at SAVED BY THE MATCHMAKER:

After her annulment is finalized, Enya Shanahan finds herself caught in a web of scandal and obligation while carrying a secret that threatens to shatter her family’s reputation. Determined to find a suitable marriage for Enya, her father turns to a wily matchmaker to save them from their circumstances.

Sullivan O’Brien, a steamboat captain committed to aiding enslaved people on their path to freedom, is faced with an ultimatum from his father. Forced to marry or lose his livelihood, a marriage of convenience seems to be the only solution. As he and Enya face the trials of their pasts and a city consumed by fire, they must confront their deepest fears and learn to trust in love, even when darkness threatens to engulf them.

THE TALE OF A TRANSPLANTED HEART By Beverly Hurwitz

Will the transplanted heart from an angry donor turn a dedicated scientist into a bioterrorist? Wherein Lies the Human Soul?

Decades ago, author/physician Beverly Hurwitz witnessed stunning changes in a patient whose life had been saved by a liver transplant. Transplant patients’ experiences of alien emotions have mostly been attributed to the side effects of the medications that help ward off rejection of the donor organ. But as transplant medicine has grown, increasing numbers of organ recipients are reporting the development of feelings, preferences, and sometimes memories that are not their own. Is the brain the only seat of consciousness? Could it be that our souls reside in the DNA of all of our cells?

The Tale of a Transplanted Heart pulls the curtain back on a research laboratory where scientists seek ways to protect humanity from deadly diseases by manipulating the DNA of dangerous germs. The story follows the life of an internationally acclaimed researcher who studies the advanced immunologic defenses of bats, but who becomes a threat to his own lab after receiving a donor heart. This story also exposes the darker side of such research: cutthroat competition for funding, unenforced lab regulations, lab accidents, and the potential creation of biologic weaponry.

Will we ever really know if the germ that caused the COVID pandemic emerged spontaneously in nature, or was it created in a lab? And if COVID was a designer virus, was its escape accidental? This novel might leave you wondering if there could actually be a dangerous lab in your neighborhood, as was the case in 2023, when numerous sick animals and lethal germs were discovered in an illegal lab that was concealed in a warehouse in Reedley, California.

This story also opens a window into the world of transplant medicine, where “only twenty percent of potential donor hearts actually get to a recipient on time, and only about ten percent of patients waiting for a new heart are lucky enough to get one in time.”

While following the impact of the surprising changes in the heart recipient in this story, the reader will be provoked to contemplate what makes each of us unique as individuals. Additionally, this novel offers insight into the long-lasting impact of infections, and the nature of the raging war between man and microbes. “A Tall Tale: How the Ostriches Got Their Long Necks and Long Legs” Promotes Lessons of Compromise and Collaboration

Expound Publicity is pleased to announce the release of A Tall Tale: How the Ostriches Got Their Long Necks and Long Legs, written by Scott Sollers, with illustrations by Alejandro Echavez.

This is the story of two rival communities –The Have-Alls and the Have-Nots. The Have-Alls live in a fertile valley while the Have-Nots live in a desolate and barren space. When the Have-Nots get jealous of the Have-Alls, a tug of war ensues, with their pet squatz caught in the middle.

Through this heartfelt and beautifully illustrated book, Sollers teaches young readers moral lessons about the pitfalls of envy and the virtues of compromise and collaboration.

Sollers created this book and other nighttime stories for his daughter, Stephanie, when she was a youngster. Originally, he handwrote and illustrated these stories, and finally had the inspiration to get them published.

A portion of proceeds from the sale of this book will benefit the Leanne B. Roberts African Savanna habitat at the San Francisco Zoo. Additionally, guests may purchase their own copy of A Tall Tale: How the Ostriches Got Their Long Necks and Long Legs at the Zoo’s Wildlife Connection Gift Shop.

“The generous donation made by Mr. Sollers to the SF Zoo will contribute to the health and wellness of our ostrich residents in our African Savanna Habitat,” said Paulo Vergara, Vice President of Guest Connections.

Prior to its release, the book has received several accolades, including a Gold Mom’s Choice Award, a Literary Titan Award and glowing 5-star reviews from prestigious outlets.

Sollers is an investment banker, an avid golfer, and leads a not-for-profit organization that helps disadvantaged children. He currently resides in San Mateo, California, with his cat, Charlie. He currently has several more Stephanie’s Stories books in the works.
