New Release: The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman

0

The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman

A gifted young knight named Collum arrives at Camelot to compete for a spot on the Round Table, only to find that he’s too late. The king died two weeks ago at the Battle of Camlann, leaving no heir, and only a handful of the knights of the Round Table survive.

They aren’t the heroes of legend, like Lancelot or Gawain. They’re the oddballs of the Round Table, from the edges of the stories, like Sir Palomides, the Saracen Knight, and Sir Dagonet, Arthur’s fool, who was knighted as a joke. They’re joined by Nimue, who was Merlin’s apprentice until she turned on him and buried him under a hill. Together this ragtag fellowship will set out to rebuild Camelot in a world that has lost its balance.

But Arthur’s death has revealed Britain’s fault lines. God has abandoned it, and the fairies and monsters and old gods are returning, led by Arthur’s half-sister Morgan le Fay. Kingdoms are turning on each other, warlords lay siege to Camelot and rival factions are forming around the disgraced Lancelot and the fallen Queen Guinevere. It is up to Collum and his companions to reclaim Excalibur, solve the mysteries of this ruined world and make it whole again. But before they can restore Camelot they’ll have to learn the truth of why the lonely, brilliant King Arthur fell, and lay to rest the ghosts of his troubled family and of Britain’s dark past.

The first major Arthurian epic of the new millennium, The Bright Sword is steeped in tradition, full of duels and quests, battles and tournaments, magic swords and Fisher Kings. It also sheds a fresh light on Arthur’s Britain, a diverse, complex nation struggling to come to terms with its bloody history. The Bright Sword is a story about imperfect men and women, full of strength and pain, who are looking for a way to reforge a broken land in spite of being broken themselves.

Ten Ways to Nurture Young Writers During the Summer

0

Summertime is here, and many parents are looking for fun ways to keep their kids engaged and learning. For those with young writers at home, this is the perfect time to encourage creativity while helping them grow their writing skills. Here are some simple tips, inspired by Sarah Montpas, English Language Arts Curriculum Manager for National Heritage Academies (NHA).

Encourage Writing to an Authentic Audience

“One of the most important things is having an authentic audience to write to,” says Montpas. Encourage your kids to write letters, emails, and postcards to family members, friends, or even their past and future teachers. This gives them a purpose for writing and helps them practice their skills.

Start a Conversation Journal

Montpas says, “One of my favorite things I used to do with my students was a conversation journal.” Parents can do this too by keeping a journal with their child. Each person writes an entry and then passes it to the other, creating a written discussion. It’s a great way to talk about topics that might be awkward in person while also practicing writing. For example, you could discuss a favorite book, a recent event, or future goals.

Play Storytelling Games

Make writing fun with storytelling games. Montpas shares a campfire game from her childhood: “One person would say a line of a story, and it would go around the circle where everybody had to add on to the story.” This game helps kids think about story structure and boosts their creative thinking.

Make Lists and Plans

“To-do lists are good,” Montpas notes, even if they don’t seem like creative writing at first. Have your kids make lists of what they want to do over the summer or create a checklist for a vacation. They could also create a menu for a family dinner. This helps them organize their thoughts and practice structured writing.

Find a Pen Pal

Finding a pen pal for your child can be a fun way for them to practice writing while learning about different places and cultures. Whether they meet a friend on vacation or through a pen pal program, it’s a great way to keep them writing.

Write Reviews

After visiting a museum, park, or any other place, encourage your child to write a review. Montpas suggests, “If you do a day trip to a museum, is there something that you could write a review on that you liked or didn’t like?” This helps kids express their thoughts and opinions. They could also review books, movies, or restaurants.

Creative Prompts and Journals

Use online resources to find story starters to spark your child’s imagination. Additionally, getting a special notebook just for summer writing can motivate them to write regularly.

Provide Positive Feedback

When giving feedback on your child’s writing, focus on positive reinforcement. Instead of pointing out what they did wrong, highlight what they did well and offer suggestions for improvement.

Create a Comfortable Writing Space

Whether it’s a cozy corner in the house or a blanket under a tree, find a space where your child feels comfortable and inspired to write. Make sure it’s full of all the supplies they will need.

Combine Reading and Writing

Reading and writing go hand in hand. Encourage your kids to read regularly, analyze the writing styles they encounter, and try to mimic those styles in their writing. This helps them understand vocabulary, sentence structure, and storytelling techniques. Montpas says, “Anything you can do to get your kids writing and reading over the summer is just going to benefit them.” A reading list or family book club can be a great way to get everyone involved.

These tips should help you keep your young writer engaged and developing their skills all summer long!

Brent Olson Recipient of the 2024 Prairie Star Award!

0

The Prairie Star Award is given out every other year and it recognizes an individual artist whose body of work has made a significant contribution to the arts over an extended period of time, who has been recognized by their artistic peers, and who has best exemplified the highest quality of work in the SMAC region. In recognizing these individuals publicly, the awards will raise the profile of the arts in their communities and throughout the SMAC region. The public is invited to join SMAC in publicly honoring Brent Olson at our Annual Celebration of the arts and artists in our southwest Minnesota region.

After the nominations were evaluated and scored by the SMAC Board of Directors it was determined that Brent Olson had the highest score for the Prairie Star Award. Brent’s nominator Judy Beckman and supporters planned a private surprise presentation of the award with friends and family at the OMG offices in Ortonville on June 19th. SMAC Executive Director, Nicole DeBoer, presented Brent with the check and letters of support for the nomination.

In her nomination, Beckman wrote, “As a columnist, author, essayist, and blogger, Brent Olson has spent 25 years entertaining, enlightening, challenging and prodding his readers to think more globally while also giving residents of southwestern Minnesota the words to express pride in living rural.” Olson has served as a Big Stone County Commissioner for nearly 20 years. Over those many years he has served on a multitude of committee assignments. Not the least of those has been his work with the arts. He served on the Southwest Minnesota Arts and Humanities Council (as SMAC was called at the time) and made the motion to approve their very first grant request.

Brent Olson has taught writing classes in nine states and six countries. He is a Bush Foundation Fellow, and the keynote speaker for the National Association of Rural Mental Health Professionals College Theological Convocation in Portland, OR. He has also been the keynote speaker for many other organizations and events, including the Saskatchewan Pork Producers.

Additional to the nominator’s support of Brent Olson receiving the Prairie Star award, he also had 10 letters of support from community members! One was from Janelle Atyeo who said, “As Regional Editor of publications that serve much of the area that encompasses the 18 counties of Southwest Minnesota, I can attest to the impact Brent Olson’s ‘Independently Speaking’ column has on this broad community…His words reach nearly 8,000 Minnesota subscribers and nearly 24, 600 reads across our coverage area”. Cheri Zagurski, Editor of the DTN/The Progressive Farmer wrote, “He writes about farm work, government work, family work and other work in a friendly, entertaining and, often, sneakily educational way. He has written about topics near and dear to all of our hearts without stirring up too many tempers and without becoming maudlin…Brent’s column is also moving. So many times after editing it I have responded to him, ‘OK, you made me cry; again.’ His insights are balm for the soul…He’s the reason I want to visit Ortonville.”

ABOUT BRENT OLSON:

Brent Olson’s biggest, boldest, and best book yet is a stunning work of alternative history. Olson has achieved an entirely new script for the world by moving the path of one arrow one inch. Brent Olson, a journalist for a quarter of a century, has published seven books and filed thousands of articles from over twenty countries on six continents. Throughout this time, he couldn’t help but wonder, “Could we have done better?” Not fully content with his world, he decided to create a new one.

Behind The Words With Farah Naz Rishi

0

Today, we welcome author Farah Naz Rishi to the blog. We’re excited to discuss her latest release SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE. Let’s begin with learning a bit about you. Where you’re from, where you live? Is writing your full-time job?

I was born in Washington, D.C., but I now live in Philadelphia. I’m very lucky that writing is my fulltime job—which means most days, I’m camped out in my little office, typing away.

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing professionally since 2016.

What does your typical writing day look like?

It’s not unlike Ursula le Guin’s writing schedule. I wake up around 9AM, eat breakfast and get ready for the day. By 10:30AM, I’m at my desk, writing. I stop around 4 PM to eat something, and for the rest of the day, I “tend to be very stupid and we won’t talk about this.”

Tell us about your latest release? Where the idea came from? Perhaps some fun moments, or not so fun moments?

I’d shared snippets of my life story, of what would become my memoir, on TikTok. To my surprise, I received several supportive comments urging me to write it all down. I didn’t think it would ever actually be published—I’m certainly not a big name, and while I believed my life was perhaps uniquely tumultuous at times, I didn’t think it was particularly remarkable. Only important people write memoirs, I’d told myself. But I wrote it, if only to help me process the events of my life and to better appreciate the incredible people in it. Except my agent believed in it, and now here we are.

My favorite moment in the book is when my brother rescued a mouse and set it free. I daresay it’s my favorite memory.

Could you share one detail from your current release with readers that they might not find in the book?

I didn’t have time or room to include this, but between my last year of law school and working on my first novel, I worked as a video game journalist. One of my favorite moments was interviewing a game developer, Eric Barone—the creator of Stardew Valley. He was incredible kind and humble.

Who has been the most difficult character for you to write? Why?

Writing Stephen, my husband, was the most difficult for me. I’d have to ask him to read and re-read all the scenes that included him, just to make sure I was staying true to his thoughts. I was worried I couldn’t do him justice.

If you could be one of your characters for a day which character would it be?

Kaya.

If you could spend the day with your character, what would you do? What would that day look like?

I would love to hang out with my dog, Stella. We would sit in the park and play fetch all day. That would be therapeutic (and a great way to avoid writing).

What’s your take on research and how do you do it?

I love doing research. I could spend hours on Jstor every day. It’s a problem. But thankfully, for this memoir, I didn’t have to do much research (just a lot of remembering).

Are there any particular authors that have influenced how you write?

Tamora Pierce and Jonathan Stroud. Those are my comfort authors.

Do you have a secret talent readers would be surprised by?

My husband calls me the cat-whisperer because I have the ability to calm down any cat. We foster a lot of cats and kittens, so this comes in handy.

Your favorite go to drink or food when the world goes crazy!

I can down a good chocolate cake like nobody’s business.

What is your writing kryptonite?

As soon as the sun goes down, I swear my brain shuts down. I struggle to write at night! But I also have difficulty moving forward in my writing; I’m always fighting the temptation to go back and rewrite what I’ve already written, and just keep tweaking.

What is the one question you never get ask at interviews, but wish you did? Ask and answer it.

If you could fistfight another author, who would it be and why?

It’s a tie between HP Lovecraft and Orson Scott Card. 😊

I’d pay to watch that!! LOL Thank you so much for joining us today. Readers, here’s a quick look at SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE:

From a Pakistani American author comes a bracing memoir about tradition, upending expectations, and the volatility of family, friendship, and, inevitably, love.

Pakistani American Farah Naz Rishi’s first year of college was perfectly, thankfully, uneventful. After all, she was in college to learn and forge a path of self-sufficiency, especially after her last relationship fell apart—dashing her mother’s aspirations for an early marriage. What could Farah expect, anyway? For the ideal guy to just conveniently waltz into her life? Life isn’t a love story.

Enter Stephen, a Jamaican student with an open smile and a disarmingly laid-back attitude. It’s not love at first sight. And there’s no way Farah’s mother would approve of him as marriage material. But they have something better: an inexplicable connection. Through a series of impossible tragedies, grief, and trying to find her place in the world, Stephen is always there as Farah’s confidant, champion, and, most of all, best friend. Anything more could ruin a perfectly good thing…Right?

Spanning thirteen years of complex family dynamics and a surprising kinship, Farah Naz Rishi’s story explores the unpredictability of love—familial, platonic, and romantic, but never truly instant.

ABOUT FARAH NAZ RISHI (pronounced FUR-uh)

Farah Naz Rishi is a Pakistani American Muslim writer and voice actor, but in another life, she’s worked stints as a lawyer, a video game journalist, and an editorial assistant. She received her B.A. in English from Bryn Mawr College, her J.D. from Lewis & Clark Law School, and her love of weaving stories from the Odyssey Writing Workshop. When she’s not writing, she’s probably hanging out with video game characters. You can find her at home in Philadelphia.
