Behind The Words With Nancy Mehl

0

Author Nancy Mehl is our guest today. We’ll be talking about her latest release COLD VENGEANCE. Welcome Nancy, tell our readers a bit about your book.

Nancy Mehl: River Ryland and Tony St. Clair left their jobs as behavioral analysts with the FBI after being attacked and left for dead by a vicious serial killer known as the Salt River Strangler. Now they run a private detective agency. Their newest case, a search for a missing cold case podcaster, throws them into the path of a killer determined to keep his secret—no matter what. They’re also being watched by a man who assisted the Strangler, adding several deaths to his horrifying toll. The man plans to finish what the Strangler started—the death of River Ryland. With time running out, River and Tony will put their hearts and lives on the line to bring a kidnapped girl home and finally deliver justice to a depraved murderer.

Can you share the inspiration behind the RYLAND & ST. CLAIR series and what drew you to the world of romantic suspense novels?

NM: I love writing stories about people who work for the FBI, especially those in the Behavioral Analysis Unit. However, getting everything right is tough. The FBI has lots of rules and those who work in the BAU don’t usually go out in the field. I decided that having two special agents leave the FBI and open a detective agency would open up more possibilities for my plots.

As far as writing romantic suspense, even as a child, I loved mystery and suspense novels. So of course, when I decided to start writing, it’s what I gravitated toward. I love the kind of conflict and tension that keeps readers on the edge of their seats!

In Cold Vengeance, your characters face a relentless enemy. How do you approach building and maintaining suspense throughout the whole novel?

NM: I believe less is more when keeping readers engaged. I try to bring the tension down and then drop it in when readers least expect it. To me, it’s like a roller coaster ride. There should be twists and turns, but they won’t be effective unless there’s some straight track built into your ride. In Cold Vengeance I keep reminding readers that my characters are being stalked, and that the man who wants to kill them is biding his time, waiting for the perfect moment. I do this by including his POV (point of view), so they have knowledge my main characters don’t have. If done effectively, I think this can really ramp up the tension.

River and Tony have faced a lot together in this series and continue to do so in this book. What elements of their characters and relationship make them such a strong pair?

NM: They built a relationship when they worked together at the FBI. Although River’s past causes her to put up walls of protection, her friendship with Tony eventually builds trust. When confronted by the Salt River Strangler, Tony risks his own life to save hers. After PTSD forces River out of the job she loves and her mother calls and asks for help after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Tony doesn’t think twice about pulling up stakes and moving to St, Louis with her. It’s his idea to open a private investigation agency so that they can continue to use their training and create a future for themselves. Tony is able to lead River to a relationship with the Lord and from there they are finally able to confess their love for each other.

Podcasting and true crime are prevalent topics in this book. What sort of research did that entail? Are you a true crime junkie?

NM: I read a lot of true crime books and watch some documentaries on TV. As far as the cold case podcaster, I researched several different podcasts. I also asked a friend who is a podcaster for information. He was really helpful.

Nancy, your readers are dedicated and appreciative of your robust characters. What is important to you when crafting characters in your novels?

NM: I want characters that my readers will connect to. I try to make them relatable and imperfect. People have asked me if I’m in any of my characters. The truth is, I’m in all of them. I think we’ve all run through the gamut of emotions and experiences that can be used to help create characters that people can understand.

Will you tell us a little about the overarching themes of the series and the story arc that builds with the addition of each RYLAND & ST. CLAIR novel? How did you seek to tie them up in Cold Vengeance?

NM: I think the main themes of the series are how how much God loves us and how forgiving He is. River Ryland has been angry at God ever since her pastor father left his wife and children for another woman. Then, when River is attacked by the Strangler, she calls out to God, promising to follow Him if He will save her. But once she recovers, she reneges on that promise. Now, River is convinced that God will never forgive her for not keeping the oath she made. God uses Tony to show her how much He really loves her and that He is more than willing to forgive her. This causes her to finally trust in His love and come back into fellowship with Him.

The story arc begins with River and Tony building their private investigation agency after leaving the FBI. They are both healing physically and emotionally after their confrontation with the Strangler. As they try to navigate the past and build a future, their relationship will change, and they will have to learn how to react to their new circumstances—as well as to each other. Also, in book one, Cold Pursuit, they discover that the Strangler has a partner who is determined to confront and kill River, since she is the only woman to ever survive one of the Strangler’s assaults. The resolution of this arc will be completed in the final book, Cold Vengeance.

Your writing is often compared to the work of acclaimed authors like Terri Blackstock and Colleen Coble. How do you feel about these comparisons, and how have these authors influenced your own writing?

NM: I love being compared to these awesome writers! I’m not sure how much they’ve influenced my writing, but if I picked up anything from them, it certainly made me better.

With Cold Vengeance wrapping up the RYLAND & ST. CLAIR series, what can your readers look forward to in your future writing projects? Are there any new themes or genres you plan to explore?

NM: I don’t plan to change genres, however, I will certainly deal with some new themes. I’m really excited about an upcoming series that will bring back Kaely Quinn, a popular character in a previous series.

Finally, how can readers connect with you?

NM: The best way is through my website: NancyMehl.com. I also have a blog called the Suspense Sisters: SuspenseSisters.blogspot.com. They can easily connect with me on Facebook as well.

Thank you so much for joining us today, Nancy!

Reader’s here’s a quick look at Cold Vengeance:::

When a renowned crime podcaster vanishes without a trace, former FBI behavioral analysts turned private investigators River Ryland and Tony St. Clair are called upon to track her down. As the pair delves deeper, they soon find themselves the targets of a relentless enemy determined to silence them. With their lives–and hearts–on the line, can they confront the evil that threatens them before it consumes them both?

Must Read Summer Mysteries! By Dianne Freeman

0

Some books are made for Summer. Whether you read them on a beach, on a plane, or between rounds of gardening, here are the mysteries I recommend for the perfect Summer read!

Every Time I go on Vacation, Someone Dies by Catherine Mack

I just finished this book, so it may be just a bit early for a summer mystery, but it takes place in Summer and has that summer vibe, so I’m sticking with it. Bestselling author, Eleanor Dash is on book tour in Italy, with bus full of fans, her manager sister, a few other authors, and the man who inspired her series, Connor Smith. She’s had all she can take of real-life Connor, but her plan to kill off his character takes a back seat when it turns out someone is trying to kill the real Connor. Fun and humorous with some hilarious footnotes.

Murder at Vinland by Alyssa Maxwell

Late Summer always means there’s a new Gilded Newport mystery from Alyssa Maxwell to read. Each book presents a new Newport mansion to visit back in the day when they were the “cottages” of the upper 400. This time newspaper reporter, Emma Cross Andrews attends a meeting of the new Audubon Society at Vinland, but it might be its members who need protecting. Someone is targeting these society ladies by sending them various forms of poison and Emma is determined to find out who. This series provides full historical immersion along with a cagey mystery.

The Comfort of Ghosts by Jacqueline Winspear

This book brings the Maisie Dobbs series to an end. I always find the stories somehow melancholy but uplifting. Jacqueline Winspear’s writing makes them impossible to put down. As WWII ends, Maisie Dobbs, the psychologist/investigator checks on the state of a home in Belgravia and finds squatters—four teenage orphans and a demobilized soldier. In her attempts to help them, she faces the mystery of her first husband’s death. Melancholy and uplifting and I’m going to miss this series.

A Daughter of Fair Verona by Christina Dodd

As told by the eldest of Romeo and Juliet’s seven children. What—you thought they’d died as teenagers? Not in this version. They not only lived, they thrived. Now if they could only marry off their first born, Rosie. Unfortunately, while she’s forced into a betrothal with one man, she falls for another. Worse, her intended is murdered at their betrothal celebration and she’s looking guilty. As she tries to uncover the true villain, more people die, and more fingers point to Rosie. A witty, romantic mystery.

The Last Hope by Susan Elia MacNeal

The Last Hope brings another of my favorite mystery series to an end. From Maggie’s start as Mr. Churchill’s secretary, she’s taken on some dangerous assignments. Now, she’s tasked with a high-stakes mission to assassinate the physicist behind Germany’s fission bomb program. The assignment goes against her principles and comes at a time when Maggie is planning a future together with the love of her life. It’s also complicated by the addition of the famous Coco Channel, a spy with divided loyalties. This series has been a compelling thrill ride and I’m looking forward to this final chapter.

AN ART LOVER’S GUIDE TO PARIS AND MURDER

Filled with Victorian-era intrigue for readers of Rhys Bowen, Deanna Raybourn, Tasha Alexander, and Julia Seales, Dianne Freeman’s Agatha Award-winning series takes a delightful jaunt to the City of Light as Frances Wynn, the American-born Countess of Harleigh, encounters a murder scene at the Paris Exposition.

Frances and her husband, George, have two points of interest in Paris. One is an impromptu holiday to visit the Paris Exposition. The other is personal. George’s Aunt Julia has requested her nephew’s help in looking into the suspicious death of renowned artist Paul Ducasse. Though Julia is not entirely forthcoming about her reasons, she is clearly a woman mourning a lost love.

At the exposition, swarming with tourists, tragedy casts a pall on the festivities. A footbridge collapses. Julia is among the casualties. However, she was not just another fateful victim. Julia was stabbed to death amid the chaos. With an official investigation at a standstill, George and Frances realize that to solve the case they must dig into Julia’s life—as well as Paul’s—and question everything and everyone in Julia’s coterie of artists and secrets.

They have no shortage of suspects. There is Paul’s inscrutable widow, Gabrielle. Paul’s art dealer and manager, Lucien. Julia’s friend Martine, a sculptress with a jealous streak. And art jurist, Monsieur Beaufoy. The investigation takes a turn when it’s revealed that George has inherited control of Julia’s estate—and another of her secrets. While George investigates, Frances safeguards their new legacy, and is drawn further into danger by a killer determined to keep the past buried.

Behind The Words With Amanda Cabot

0

Readers, welcome author Amanda Cabot to the blog. Today, we’ll be talking about her latest release INTO THE STARLIGHT. Tell us about your latest book?

Here’s my ten-second teaser: Who would have guessed that a spinster’s visit to Sweetwater

Crossing would change the course of her nephew and a lovely pianist’s lives and resolve a decades-old mystery?

What makes your Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing series stand out from your other series?

Two things make this unique. First, it’s the first time I’ve dealt with sibling relationships in a blended family, and secondly, it’s the first time I’ve had an overarching mystery that’s not resolved until the final book.

Each book in the Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing series focuses on a different sister in the Vaughn family. Can you please tell readers about Joanna, the middle sister in the Vaughn family?

Joanna has the basic insecurity of a middle child, feeling as if she’s not as special as her sisters, when in reality it’s simply that her talents are different from theirs.

Dr. Burke Finley is not from Sweetwater Crossing. How did he come to reside in this town?

Burke has no intention of staying in Sweetwater Crossing longer than the two weeks that he’s promised his uncle’s fiancée, but you know what they say about best-laid plans.

Both Joanna and Burke have baggage from their past. How does this affect their relationship and how are they able to move beyond their problems?

Like most of us, their past has shaped them. The challenge they face is recognizing that while they cannot change the past, they must not let it prevent them from enjoying the present and planning for the future.

Into the Starlight is a story of friendship and family that also contains an element of mystery. What is your secret for blending these elements to create a captivating story that your fans will love?

No secret, just a lot of careful plotting to ensure that no one element dominates the story.

What do readers have to look forward to as you conclude the Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing series?

I’m excited about my Sisters of the Heart trilogy which features three women who are closer than many women who share DNA. The first book, Echoes of Sunrise, will be available in early 2025.

Are there any threads that run through the whole series that will be wrapped up in this book?

This final book completes the sisters’ reunion and—more importantly—answers the question of what happened to Clive Finley.

The Secrets of Sweetwater Crossing series takes place in 1800s Texas. What do you enjoy about writing books set in the historical South?

Besides the pleasure of writing about a particularly beautiful part of Texas, I enjoy setting my books in what many believe to be a simpler time. It wasn’t necessarily simpler, but it was different from 21st-century America. Weaving those differences into my stories is great fun for me as an author, and judging from readers’ reactions, they enjoy it too.

What do you hope readers will gain from reading Into the Starlight?

My prayer as I write each book is that my stories will touch readers’ hearts and deepen their faith.

How can readers connect with you?

My website has links to my social media accounts, my email address, and information about each of my books as well as advice for aspiring writers.

Where can readers purchase a copy of Into the Starlight?

It’s available at all the online retailers. For readers who prefer paperbacks, I highly recommend Baker Book House, since their discounts are the best I’ve seen.

Thank you so much for joining us today, Amanda! Reader’s, INTO THE STARLIGHT releases today! Here’s a quick look……

After more than a year in Europe, Joanna Vaughn returns to Sweetwater Crossing, her dreams of becoming a concert pianist shattered. As if that weren’t enough, her husband, whom she married after a whirlwind courtship, has died. The only thing sustaining her on the journey back to Texas was the thought of her childhood home. But to Joanna’s dismay, she’s changed so much that the place she once loved no longer feels like home.

After his fiancée married his partner and both blamed him for a patient’s death, Dr. Burke Finley believes it’s time for a change. A quick trip with his almost-aunt Della Samuels to Sweetwater Crossing turns into an extended stay to discover what happened to his uncle and her would-be husband. But the beautiful and musical Joanna makes it more than bearable.

As the two join forces to help Della, there is no denying the attraction felt on both sides. But ghosts from the past are coming to call–and threatening to destroy any chance at happily-ever-after.

Get swept away by this emotional tale of family, friendship, and the kind of love that overcomes every obstacle.

We are excited to continue that tradition with BOOM! as part of the Random House Publishing Group.”

Sneak Peek: Murder at Vinland by Alyssa Maxwell

Murder at Vinland by Alyssa Maxwell

Reporter and sleuth Emma Cross Andrews must stop a bold poisoner who is targeting the society wives of the Four Hundred in Gilded Age Newport, Rhode Island . . .

August 1901: A fundraiser for a new Rhode Island Audubon Society brings Emma to Vinland, the Viking-themed seaside home of her relative, Florence Vanderbilt Twombly, where the guest of honor is Edith Roosevelt, wife of Vice President Theodore Roosevelt. Listening to the speakers and observing the ladies in attendance, Emma is struck by the contrast of the Viking warrior–inspired elements in the house and the admirable but admittedly genteel cause of bird protection. Vinland bears the name of the Vikings’ first landfall in North America, but in this room today there is most assuredly no one to fear.

Emma’s observation of harmless philanthropy is proven wrong the following morning when one of Mrs. Twombly’s houseguests from the luncheon becomes mysteriously and dangerously ill. Accompanying police detective Jesse Whyte, Emma discovers a box of petit fours supposedly sent by Mrs. Roosevelt. They promptly rule out the Second Lady as a suspect, but someone has poisoned the cakes.

Soon another box of desserts as well as letters tainted with ink containing caustic toxins show up at other grand Newport cottages. Are the ladies from the luncheon being targeted? Emma and Jesse must sort through possible motives and means because now more than the birds need protection . . .

BAD IDEA is proud to announce that blockbuster screenwriter Derek Kolstad, creator and writer of the internationally acclaimed, box office dominating motion picture franchise JOHN WICK, as well as the multi-award winning action-thriller NOBODY and its upcoming sequel for Universal Studios, will join New York Times best-selling writer Robert Venditti (Superman ’78Green Lantern) and visionary artist Tomás Giorello (Star WarsConan) for PLANET DEATH – an all-new BAD IDEA Prestige Format limited series beginning in March.

Millions of miles from home, hundreds of ships descend into the stormy atmosphere of a hostile frozen world. On board, an army of resolute men and women brace for the coming assault.

They are an invasion force, on an impossible mission — destroy the devastating enemy weapon garrisoned below. Corporal Scott and his battalion are in the vanguard but the human forces are no match for their brutal alien adversaries. Scott’s battalion is dead within moments. He is its lone survivor. The landing force annihilated, the battle is lost.

Against overwhelming odds, Scott dares the unthinkable — cross behind enemy lines, survive the lethal landscape, evade capture by ruthless enemies, resist natural predators, face human deserters and finish the mission singlehandedly. Locked in his suit of full combat battle armor, sustained only by what he can carry, and driven by Earth’s wrath, Scott must do by himself what an entire army could not.

Destroy the weapon.

Return home.

“Derek, Rob, and Tomás have built an absolutely massive story of the highest caliber in PLANET DEATH, and we’ve planned an equally massive promotional campaign to support it,” said BAD IDEA CEO & Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani.

“It all begins this month at the legendary San Diego Comic-Con with our PLANET DEATH convention exclusive giveaway comic spotlighting the book’s virtuoso art, a massive panel featuring the entire creative team appearing on stage, and a no-expense-spared live event in the book’s honor.”

Derek Kolstad created the JOHN WICK franchise, which follows Keanu Reeves’ retired hitman on his descent back into the criminal underworld, for Lionsgate Entertainment who launched the first film in 2014. That film has been followed by a trio of critically acclaimed sequels, each of which has grossed more at the box office than the one before. Kolstad, who wrote the first two films and co-wrote the third, has seen his work on the franchise expand to include the limited series, THE CONTINENTAL from Lionsgate/Peacock, which he wrote and executive produced on, and the much anticipated THE BALLERINA, an upcoming spin-off film starring Oscar nominee Ana de Armas.

Kolstad also wrote and executive produced the acclaimed action-thriller NOBODY starring Bob Odenkirk for Universal Studios, and penned the sequel which arrives in theaters next year. Among Kolstad’s many other credits are writing and co-executive producing Marvel’s 5x Emmy-nominated limited series THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER for Disney+, producing 20th Century Studios’ Joey King actioner THE PRINCESS for Hulu, and creating, writing and executive producing the 7x Emmy-nominated series DIE HART starring Kevin HartJohn Travolta and John Cena. Kolstad’s films have amassed more than one billion dollars at the worldwide box office to date.

Robert Venditti is a New York Times bestselling author of more than 400 comics and graphic novels including a celebrated 5-year run on Green Lantern, an acclaimed 3-year run on Hawkman, award-winning runs on Superman ’78 and Justice League for DC Comics, as well as the graphic novel Six Days, inspired by the story of his uncle’s participation in D-Day. His debut graphic novel The Surrogates was adapted into a feature film starring Bruce Willis and Ving Rhames for Walt Disney Pictures. He has also adapted Rick Riordan’s global bestselling Percy Jackson and the Olympians and The Heroes of Olympus series. His most recent projects include Wesley Dodds: The SandmanOrdainedPlanet Death, and a whole lot of Bad Ideas.

“PLANET DEATH is my love letter to all of the comics and books I read, movies I watched, and games I played – late into the night with a grin on my face…from HARD BOILED and RONIN by Frank Miller to the films of Alistair MacLean like THE GUNS OF NAVARONE and WHERE EAGLES DARE to Bradbury, Asimov, and Heinlein, to games like STARCRAFT and everything in between,” said Kolstad.

“Some of my favorite stories are the ones that blend science fiction with elements of the war genre. From STARSHIP TROOPERS to ALIENS and EDGE OF TOMORROW. With PLANET DEATH we take this tradition and add all those things we love so much about comic books.”

“From my first conversations with Derek, I don’t know how to describe it, other than an engine clicked on. Writing the first issue, I was buzzing with adrenaline. I couldn’t stop until I got the whole issue down. I was swept up in Scott’s relentless will—always pressing forward, always pushing ahead,” said Venditti.

“I’ve written a lot of science fiction—but never from the perspective of a boots-on-the-ground, D-Day-style invasion. With every project, I want to push myself further. PLANET DEATH is bigger in scale and scope than anything I’ve done before.”

This coming March, blockbuster screenwriter Derek KolstadNew York Times best-selling writer Robert Venditti and visionary artist Tomás Giorello unleash a monumental new comic book event in PLANET DEATH #1 – available in comic shops around the world! Miss Morton and the Deadly Inheritance by Catherine Lloyd

Social standing is everything in Regency England—and no one knows better than Miss Caroline Morton, a lady’s companion from a disgraced line. But when she has a chance to claim what’s rightfully hers, the one obstacle in her way is a dangerous murder mystery . .

Miss Caroline has doubts when she receives an urgent invitation from a London law firm to discuss her late father’s estate. After all, the dishonored Earl of Morton died without a pound sterling to pass on to his two daughters. But while immersing herself in helping Mrs. Frogerton’s capricious daughter navigate the high social season, Caroline meets with a cagey lawyer, Mr. Smith, who shares life-altering news—the earl composed a second will, leaving behind an undisclosed fortune.

Mrs. Frogerton, however, is thoroughly unimpressed with the firm’s conduct and suspicious of their true motives. Her instinct proves right when the two ladies find the office ransacked, staff in turmoil, and Mr. Smith missing. The full weight of the situation doesn’t sink in until Mr. Smith dies following a brutal attack on the street—discovered with an empty envelope bearing Caroline’s name in his pocket.

With a connection forming between two deaths at the firm, Caroline can’t imagine why anyone would kill twice over the contents of a will. Further complicating matters is the amorous Mr. DeBloom—who claims his mother goaded the earl into making bad investments and promises to link Caroline to her inheritance—and the disappearance of Susan, her younger sister. As Caroline unwittingly becomes the center of both a criminal case and a sordid love triangle, she must tread with caution while seeking the truth . . . because someone is waiting to reduce her to nothing more than a signature on a dotted line.

The Burning Gem By Don Sawyer

The Burning Gem By Don Sawyer

Like John Wick with sorcery, The Burning Gem is a story of hidden worlds beneath our own, of lost train stations and unholy customs brought to you by critically acclaimed author, Don Sawyer

The Burning Gem spins from chance meeting of a woman ready for adventure after years in a loveless marriage and a mysterious artisan who will show her another world. Barbara has always had an uncanny ability to read others, but her full empathic skills emerge only after a part of her soul is crystalized into a flaming red gem. Desperate to escape her soulcrushing suburban life and to reconnect with the mysterious man who made her gem, she makes her way on foot through the terrifying NY subway tunnels to find an abandoned station.

Zoltan is a gem maker who lives an existence of opulent bitterness. Along with a network of other agents, his job is to catch souls and form them into magnificent jewels. He works with referrals only, and how his clients – rising CEOs, ambitious politicians, vainglorious religious leaders — are selected is of no concern to him. He is 110 years old. While Zoltan’s contract with the hideous Mester – who may or may not be human – promises him wealth and extended life, it also prohibits him from touching another person, or even sharing his true name Zoltan’s life is changed dramatically when Barbara bursts into it.

She breaks the spell he has been under, and he risks everything – including his life — to discover the true nature of the sinister cabal he has unwittingly been part of. Their base of operations is a long-forgotten 1873 subway terminal, now transformed into the Market, a hidden community of seers, shapeshifters, artisans with extraordinary skills, keepers of ancient knowledge. From here Barbara and Zoltan follow leads that take them to the ruin bars and dark alleys of Budapest in a desperate race to find the truth and neutralize the Mester before he kills them.

“This exciting fantasy adventure, which plays out just beneath our feet, has already garnered praise for its characters and fast-paced plot: “In The Burning Gem, accomplished storyteller and author Don Sawyer gives us a meticulously crafted, richly imagined, complexly plotted, deep and magical allegory creating a world that mirrors the dark forces at work on our planet today. DEAR HANNA by ZOJE STAGE

Hanna is no stranger to dark thoughts: as a young child, she tried to murder her own mother. But that was more than sixteen years ago. And extensive therapy―and writing letters to her younger brother―has since curbed those nasty tendencies.

Now twenty-four, Hanna is living an outwardly normal life of domestic content. Married to real estate agent Jacob, she’s also stepmother to his teenage daughter Joelle. They live in a beautiful home, and Hanna loves her career as a phlebotomist―a job perfectly suited to her occasional need to hurt people.

But when Joelle begins to change in ways that don’t suit Hanna’s purposes, her carefully planned existence threatens to come apart. With life slipping out of her control, Hanna reverts to old habits, determined to manipulate the events and people around her. And the only thing worse than a baby sociopath is a fully grown one.

With its dark humor and chillingly seductive protagonist, DEAR HANNA is sure to thrill returning and new readers alike.

“Stage has become a popular voice in the space where psychological suspense and horror overlap, and readers have long clamored for a sequel to her debut novel, Baby Teeth (2018). She has finally thoughtfully obliged with a stand-alone follow-up, a story that can be read either before or after that first book, with each informing the other… All will squirm uncomfortably and yet be unwilling to look away, furiously turning the pages until the final
twist is revealed. A great choice for those who enjoy the work of Sarah Pinborough, Catriona Ward, and Katrina Monroe.” ―Booklist
“Once you get inside the head of this suburban whirlpool of psychological madness, there is no escape until the shocking final pages.” ―Daniel Kraus, New York Times bestselling author of Whalefall
“The most unsettling child you’ve ever read about is all grown up . . . Just like our dear Hanna does with her beloved charcoals, Zoje Stage masterfully draws you into a story made up entirely of shades of gray. You won’t know what to believe, you won’t know who to pull for, and you won’t put it down until the last page is turned.” ―Tony Wirt, bestselling author of Just Stay Away
