A determined young woman in 1950s Los Angeles walks a darker city than she ever imagined in a spellbinding novel about the power to make dreams come true—whatever the sacrifice.

Los Angeles brims with opportunity in 1959—though not for aspiring fashion designer Cordelia Mai Yin, the first-generation child of Vietnamese immigrants, who finds the city unkind to outsiders and as dispirited as her own family. That they all share the same middle name makes their friendship seem like destiny.

As supportive as they are of each other, it’s a struggle just to eke out a living, let alone hope to see their wishes for success come true. Until an ever-present and uncannily charming acquaintance of the landlord’s offers a solution to their problems. He promises to fulfill their every dream. All it takes is a little magic. And a small sacrifice.

As one surprisingly effective spell leads to another, their wishes get bigger. But so does the price they must pay. Amid the damaged seams of her life so far, Cordi must realize her own power in order to rip free, without losing everything she’s worked so hard to achieve.

After a Devastating Fire Levels Her Brand New Home, Debut Novelist Suzy Accola Pens Janie Blue

0

Janie Blue by Suzy Accola

Just over a decade ago, author Suzy Accola lost her brand-new home a few nights after her family moved in. Accola’s three children were sleeping in their rooms when the fire broke out around midnight. She and her husband, Jim, had worked together through their design-build firm to create the home of their dreams, and to say dreams were dashed that evening would be an understatement. Built with grit and grace, Accola went into high gear to make things work for her family. The seeds were planted for Janie Blue that night.

The story further evolved while Accola worked through the grief of losing her mother shortly after that, and the family moved to Florida to rebuild their lives. The book’s publishing was serendipitously completed a year after their decade-long legal battle with insurers was won, and the Accolas gained closure for what they lost in that devastating fire that started it all.

A sophisticated socialite, Ella seems to have it all—Jackie O good looks, a handsome husband whose political career is on the rise, loving parents, and a beautiful home just outside Seattle. Still, the recesses of her mind hold a secret she is unaware of until fate intervenes while she drives toward CaliforniaJanie Blue, on the other hand, is a free spirit open to adventure with a penchant for knocking the socks off any man she meets—including the charming Chase O’Leary, who comes to her rescue on his way to Sin City. Between Chase’s line of work, Ella’s narcissistic husband, and Janie’s past, a tangled web of lies, fraud, and murder weaves from the Mojave Desert to the Pacific Northwest, daring anyone to cross its path.

True Crime Thriller, The Meaning of Malice, Details Story of Dallas Socialite Long Suspected of Serial Murder; Presents New Evidence

0

The Meaning of Malice examines the life and crimes of Sandra Bridewell—a beguiling Dallas socialite in the seventies and early eighties who happened to be author John Leake’s neighbor. Sandra’s first husband was a prominent dentist who was found shot to death in their Dallas home in 1975. The Dallas County Medical Examiner ruled his death a suicide. Bridewell’s second husband, Robert Weeks Bridewell, developed the Mansion on Turtle Creek—the first property of Rosewood Hotels and Resorts. Shortly after Mr. Bridewell died of lymphoma in 1982, his treating physician’s wife was found shot to death in her car at Dallas Love Field a few hours after giving Sandra a ride to the airport. The medical examiner ruled the woman’s death a suicide. Three years later, Sandra’s third husband was found shot to death in his car in which he was last seen driving to meet her. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide and Sandra became the prime suspect but was never arrested.

In 1987, Sandra Bridewell was the subject of a D Magazine feature titled “The Black Widow” that suggested she had indeed murdered her third husband—as well as her first husband and the wife of the prominent cancer doctor who had treated Mr. Bridewell.

Author John Leake grew up in Highland Park, down the street from Sandra Bridewell, and often visited her at her home to socialize with one of her children. With the assistance of former Los Angeles County criminalist Lynne Herold and former FBI forensic psychologist, Gregg McCrary, he analyzed the three gunshot deaths reported in the 1987 D Magazine feature.

“The first two deaths, which happened in 1975 and 1982, were erroneously ruled suicides by the Dallas County Medical Examiner,” Leake explains. “Dallas police photos of the death scenes display physical evidence that both were homicides staged to look like suicides. The third death was correctly ruled a homicide. Sandra Bridewell was the last known contact of all three decedents, and she had a motive for killing all three. I believe the Dallas County District Attorney should reopen these cases and consider the evidence I present in my book.”

Leake began his multi-year investigation in 2007, when Sandra Bridewell was arrested (and later pled guilty) for aggravated identity theft. Assuming the guise of a Christian missionary, she ingratiated herself with an elderly lady in Southport, North Carolina (near Cape Fear) to steal the unsuspecting victim’s identity and to plunder her financial assets. Leake visited Bridewell in pretrial detention and began documenting her life and wanderings. NBC News Dateline “Tangled Web”) and A&E (“The Black Widow: A Web of Suspicion”) produced documentaries on Sandra’s story at the time of her 2007 arrest, but these productions raised more questions than they answered.

The Meaning of Malice is available on Amazon.

Leake was recently interviewed in a major in-studio podcast: True Crime Author John Leake: On the Trail of a Suspected Black Widow Serial Killer

About the Author: John Leake’s first book, Entering Hades: The Double Life of a Serial Killer was a New York Times Sunday Book Review “Editors’ Choice,” a Men’s Vogue “Best Book of 2007,” and the inspiration of The Infernal Comedy, starring John Malkovich. His investigative work has been the subject of numerous television documentaries. The Meaning of Malice is his fourth book. For more information visit: Author John Leake

Behind The Words With Lynn H. Blackburn

0

Welcome Lynn to our blog! Lynn is here to talk about her latest release NEVER ALL AGAIN. Let’s start with telling our readers a bit about the novel.

Landry Hutton has spent three years rebuilding her life behind the secure gates of The
Haven, an exclusive resort on the outskirts of Gossamer Falls, North Carolina. As the
artist-in-residence, she is finally ready to build a new life and home for her and her
daughter—with the help of a handsome former Marine. But when danger threatens them,
can Callum Shaw help protect both their hearts and their lives?

Never Fall Again is the first book in your new Gossamer Falls series. How will the
books in this series be connected?
The heroes of the first and third books and the heroine of the second book are cousins.
They are part of a large, close family that has been living in Gossamer Falls for over one
hundred years.

What inspired the idea behind this series?
All of my books have a strong ensemble cast. In previous books, the glue connecting the
characters has been law enforcement–related. But I wanted to do a series where the
characters were connected by blood instead of a workplace. And as a native of Western
North Carolina, I knew I wanted to set the story in my mountains and give my characters a
sprawling family that will both love and annoy them.

What makes this series stand out from your previous works?
My romantic suspense has always leaned heavily toward the romantic side, but with this
series, I was very intentional about that decision. The suspense is still there and the stakes
are high. But it was a delight to put more words on the page that focus on both the romantic relationships as well as the friendships and family relationships.

What type of research was required to write Never Fall Again?
Both of my main characters have unique hobbies/skills. My heroine is a potter, and I spent
time with a potter who generously gave of her time and teaching skills—the two bowls I
made during our lesson are some of my favorite things ever! And I got to watch the wood
turning/burning process that creates the unique wooden vases, bowls, and bookmarks that
my hero creates. It was wonderful! I now have two vases that I adore—one in my office
and one on my piano.

Is Gossamer Falls inspired by a real location?
Gossamer Falls is an amalgamation of multiple towns in Western North Carolina. I
borrowed bits and pieces from places I’ve lived and visited.

Landry Hutton is known as the artist-in-residence at The Haven. What does this
mean for Landry?
The Haven offers their guests everything from guided hikes to private art lessons. As the
artist-in-residence, Landry spends half of her time catering to the needs of the guests by
providing private and group instruction in painting and pottery. The rest of her time is
spent creating pottery that is sold online and in The Haven’s gift shop, Favors.

Can you share more about Cal’s background as a former Marine turned construction
worker?
Cal has a four-year degree in construction management. He joined the Marine Corps as an
officer after graduation. He had always planned to return to Gossamer Falls and join his
family’s construction firm, but he wanted to serve his country first.

What do you hope readers will gain from reading this novel?
I always want my readers to come away from my stories with a renewed sense of hope and
a deeper faith.

What do readers have to look forward to in the rest of the series?
Books 2 and 3 will cover everything from meth addiction to corporate espionage. The
romances are going to be intense and will hit some of my favorite tropes: friends to lovers,
grumpy/sunshine, and second-chance romance. There will also be a novella with a plucky
chef, a deputy with dark secrets, and a devious villain.

What do you love most about writing romantic suspense?
I truly wanted to be a spy when I was little. I was also (and still am) a hopeless romantic.
Romantic suspense is truly the best of both worlds!

How can readers connect with you?
The best way to stay up-to-date is to visit my website and subscribe to my newsletter. I’m
also active on social media @LynnHBlackburn and love to interact with readers on
Facebook and Instagram.

Thank you so much for joining us today!

Readers, here’s a quick look at NEVER FALL AGAIN…..

Landry Hutton has spent three years rebuilding her life behind the secure gates of The Haven, an exclusive resort on the outskirts of Gossamer Falls, North Carolina. As the artist-in-residence, and with her pottery prized by The Haven’s guests, Landry is finally ready to settle in permanently. She wants to give her daughter, Eliza, a safe home to grow up in and hires former Marine Callum Shaw to handle the construction.

Cal grew up in Gossamer Falls and always knew he would someday join his family’s business. He longs for a family of his own but has almost given up on that ever happening. Landry is funny, gifted, and everything Cal could ever want in a partner, but he vows to keep his distance. Landry has a daughter and a past. Cal has been down that road before and barely survived when the woman he loved left, taking her two sons with her. He can’t bear to lose like that again.

Before construction on the house can begin, Landry’s pottery is destroyed in a suspicious fire. It soon becomes clear that Landry and Eliza are in grave danger–but because of whom? But, after losing one relationship, he is hesitant to try again.
