March Celebrates Science Fiction:: BUILD YOUR OWN SPACESHIP By Nir Yaniv

0

Build Your Own Spaceship By Nir Yaniv Author of The Good Soldier

Have you ever attempted to build your own spaceship? Even if you haven’t, you probably have a gut feeling about which spaceship looks right and which doesn’t. Decades of science fiction, not to mention the space programs, saw to that. It can look like the space shuttle or the USS Enterprise or the Millennium Falcon or the Japanese Battleship Yamato from Star Blazers. It has a command capsule or a bridge near the front and an engine or five at the back. There may be pipes or corridors or access tubes. Some spaceships are more slick than others, but still, there’s not much to make them truly unique. So what does a science fiction writer have to do to create a one-of-a-kind spaceship?

To answer that, we need to ask three questions: What was this spaceship meant to be? What is it used for by the people running it? And most importantly: What is the focus of the society that created the ship?

For instance, some cultures would prioritize ease of use and comfort, with a healthy dose of automation and a slick user interface. Others may focus on robustness, at the expense of everything else. Etc. etc,

Which brings me to the ship I’ve designed for my new novel, The Good Soldier. The plot takes place in an alternative future, and our galaxy is ruled by a tyrannical empire derived from 19th-century Europe.

The ship – named UPS Spitz (United Planets Ship – yeah, I know) – is a light frigate. That answers the first question. Let’s skip the second question for now and jump to the third: what is the focus of society that created this ship:

Well, every piece of equipment created in this dystopian, fascist society is designed to leave control with the leaders of the empire and prevent any tinkering or misuse. And so the ship, the light frigate UPS Spitz – the initials stand for United Plants Ship (yeah, I know) – is constructed quite differently than anything else you’ve seen before. There’s no bridge of control room, because those imply, well, control. And as for the engine room… perhaps a quote would do best here:

The UPS Spitz did not have an engine room. While it definitely, according to the laws of both state and physics, had an engine, that vital part was designed to be as inaccessible as possible. It was cast into a solid sphere of some super-hard polymer, which itself hung in the middle of a graphene spider web inside a hollow, fortified space that consisted of the entire rear quarter of the ship, sealed with a combination of tough materials not only totally impenetrable› but also a tightly kept state secret. The only opening was for the main power supply shaft, which itself was similarly sealed and protected up to the very point it split into about a dozen immense cables, each, in turn, splitting into numerous thick tubes transferring power from wherever it was stored. The whole apparatus was remotely controlled, and even the control units were cast in tough security boxes, just in case.…The only way to fix the thing was total deconstruction and overhaul in a naval dockyard, Class A. This, as everybody knew, was a far-fetched scenario, especially in comparison with likelier incidents, e.g., the ship being lost along with its entire crew

Is it a logical design? Yes, if you’re a crazy tyrant. For the rest of us, it’s ludicrous. Which, I dare say, serves the point: that bad politics can twist logic on its head. This idiotic design fits the book’s protagonist, Fux, a stocky red-haired draftee to the imperial army, who declares himself to be an Idiot, Second-Class.

And what about the second question? What do the people on board the ship use it for? Well, in this case the answer is simple: the ship is their home.

This is just one example, and a rather bizarre one, of what can be done to create one’s own spaceship. It may be used, I dare say, to create other entities as well. But hey, you don’t have to take my word for it: go and try it yourselves!

Here’s a look at THE GOOD SOLDIER:

The Imperial Navy has long been at war. It is a well-oiled machine, a mighty galactic power in which nothing can go wrong.

Enter Pre-Private Joseph Fux, self-proclaimed Idiot, Second Class.

When Fux arrives on board the light frigate UPS Spitz, things immediately begin to go wrong. It’s not Fux’s fault. It never is. Accidents just happen when he’s around, despite the best intentions.

And as the always-cheerful Fux bungles his way through one job after another, he throws the whole ship and its orderly crew into chaos. No one is left unscathed: not the responsible and lonely Lt. Lipton, grieving for his lost love; not the mercilessly logical Doctor Nightingale, who may or may not be Lipton’s current romantic interest; not the overzealous Ensign Berseker, or the pompous political officer, Commander Kapust. Not even the hidden, monstrous Captain.

Knowingly or not, Fux is an agent of resistance, his blind stupidity the only sane response to the insanity of war. Something’s gotta give, and the tiny spanner-in-the-works that is Fux threatens at last to destroy the entire machinery of the Galactic Empire . . .

March Is For Science Fiction – Authors Breakfield & Burkey and A Sci-fi Backstory

0

We are storytellers who allow our imaginations to plunge into different genres. While at the University of Texas-Austin, Breakfield (Charles) studied astrophysics based on his passion for astronomy.  Math and physics have remained top of mind during his professional career as a techno-geek, so it didn’t surprise Burkey (Rox)when he sent over a rough manuscript entitled Planet Survivors. The image shown above is from that short story.

Years ago, Breakfield and a partner set up a science fiction comic bookstore in Austin, Texas. Several aspiring authors and comic artists would chew the fat with us. The store had a neat vibe. George R.R. Martin visited a couple of times, which was fun. That chapter was closed when Breakfield sold his interest after he married and began his family. Curious fact: Austin Books on Lamar in Austin celebrated its 35th birthday.

The Star Trek series and Star Wars movies fueled Charles’ lifelong infatuation with science fiction. The fascinating stories were about exploring other worlds and using technology and advanced engineering inroads. Another compelling movie that leveraged a combination of space travel and technology, 2001-A Space Odessey, illustrated how computer programs using Artificial Intelligence can run amuck. The technical advancements created to bring these movies to the screen are stunning. It is fascinating to see items born in the writer’s creative mind and brought to the screen, available in modern homes and businesses today.

Charles and Rox started reading books at a young age and routinely found books to explore. The practice continues for enjoyment and to learn different writing styles. Dune is at the top of Charles’ list. Many treasured science fiction novels opened readers’ minds to wild possibilities with commentary on technical advancements, political differences, societal inequities, and human tenacity. The creativity required to write seemingly futuristic stories opens the doors to exploring science facts.

Charles and Rox have extensive technological careers, immersed in the middle of its evolution. Technical changes are fast and furious, which is mostly good. Sometimes, the changes have negative impacts not considered in the design. Those elements might be exploited by nefarious individuals or groups for power and control. Using these vulnerabilities is what attracted Breakfield and Burkey to begin writing fiction. Our combined creative license delivers stories with elements of humor, pathos, relationships, travel, and heartbreak on a foundation of technology.

Authors Breakfield & Burkey are fussy about their story details whether in their techno-thrillers, women’s contemporary, historical fiction, or science fiction books. Don’t be fooled; our passion for storytelling doesn’t mean we invent facts to be used in our stories. Everything is researched and verified before we insert things into our tales. Consequentially, we avoid time travel and faster-than-light travel since we can’t justify these capabilities. Probably a personality flaw, but there it is.

We must be confident of how the technology or the planet engineering works to use it properly in the story. Made-up facts tick off readers and push them to put the book down. We speculate on how applications, networks, or applied technologies might morph into a juicier problem or situation, but the foundational facts are included. Storytelling is the art of plausibility when writing. Join us on our next adventure to see if we stray too far from reality.

Breakfield & Burkey

Here’s A look at Breakfield & Burkey’s latest release Enigma Tracer:

The clock is ticking … can Gracie uncover the truth?

Phillip Pliant is the wealthy opportunist plastics dealer, and CEO of Pliant Industries. He’s also a master thief—creating a pervasive threat to the manufacturing infrastructure in the Caribbean islands. With the cartel as his stealth client, the naïve city leaders have been seduced, enabling the production of more than 3-dimentional building materials.

And set the stage for massive chaos and destruction.

Pliant has locked up contracts, assets, and control of any future expansion. His contacts and clients salivate over their probable financial reward—the expected profits are monstrous.

Is the R-Group, now led by Gracie and the family heirs, strong enough to win against this predator? Can JJ’s CATS (Cyber Assassin Technology Services) act on the root-cause analysis in time?

  • Will the R-Group and CATS sabotage Pliant’s plan before it’s too late?
  • Can Jeff and Keith use their covert skills to put the bad guys away for good?
  • Will Gracie be able to squash Pliant and the cartels?

Can the chain of islands survive the underhanded tactics and threats?

Gracie never considered their lives would hang in the balance between winning and losing. Will the devious plot be uncovered in time? The clock is ticking. Five … four … three …

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Charles Breakfield – Works for a high-tech manufacturer as a solution architect, functioning in hybrid data/telecom environments. He considers himself a long-time technology geek, who also enjoys writing, studying World War II history, travel, and cultural exchanges. Charles’ love of wine tastings, cooking, and Harley riding has found its ways into the stories. As a child, he moved often because of his father’s military career, which even helps him with the various character perspectives he helps bring to life in the series. He continues to try to teach Burkey humor.

Rox Burkey – Works as a business architect who builds solutions for customers on a good technology foundation. She has written many technical and white papers but finds the freedom of writing fiction a lot more fun. As a child, she helped to lead the kids with exciting new adventures built on make-believe characters, was a Girl Scout until high school, and contributed to the community as a young member of a Head Start program. Rox enjoys family, learning, listening to people, travel, outdoor activities, sewing, cooking, and thinking about diversifying the series.

Breakfield and Burkey – started writing non-fictional papers and books, but it wasn’t nearly as fun as writing fictional stories. They found it interesting to use the aspects of technology people are incorporating into their daily lives more and more as a perfect way to create a good guy/bad guy story with elements of travel to the various places they have visited either professionally and personally, humor, romance, intrigue, suspense, and a spirited way to remember people who have crossed paths with them. They love to talk about their stories with private and public book readings. Burkey also conducts regular interviews for Texas authors, which she finds very interesting. Her first interview was, wait for it, Breakfield. You can often find them at local book fairs or other family-oriented events.

The primary series is based on a family organization called R-Group. Recently they have spawned a subgroup that contains some of the original characters as the Cyber Assassins Technology Services (CATS) team. The authors have ideas for continuing the series in both of these tracks. They track their many characters on a spreadsheet, with a hidden avenue for the future coined The Enigma Chronicles tagged in some portions of the stories. Fan reviews seem to frequently suggest that these stories would make good television or movie stories, so the possibilities appear endless, just like their ideas for new stories.

They have book video trailers on their YouTube Channel and website, www.EnigmaSeries.com. We invite you to visit the website for FREE stuff along with samples of the books and options to purchase signed copies directly. You may also find it fascinating to check out the fun acronyms they create for their stories. Reach out to them at Authors@EnigmaSeries.com, Twitter@EnigmaSeries, or Facebook@TheEnigmaSeries.

FRIENDS IN NAPA by Sheila Yasmin Marikar

“Smart and wildly entertaining…like drinking a glass of wine with an endlessly witty, scandalous friend.” –Mindy Kaling

Six old friends descend on Napa Valley for a luxurious weekend of fine wine and good times…until old tensions simmer to the surface. So much can go wrong in this dark comedy by the author of The Goddess Effect.

Just get yourselves here, everything else is on us.

Raj and Rachel Ranjani have invited a small group of their ride or dies from college for a celebratory weekend in Napa Valley. On the agenda: three nights in the couple’s vineyard mansion, a lavish dinner at Napa’s hottest new restaurant, exclusive tastings, and the grand opening of the Ranjanis’ ultra-high-end winery. It’s a reunion of six friends who haven’t seen each other in years. What could go wrong?

To start, there’s the less-than-warm welcome: a brick flung through a window and palpable tension between the hosts. But no worries―all Raj has to do is pop a few bottles of vintage Dom, and the college vibes come rushing back. So do old resentments, animosities, and unrequited crushes. Soon enough, the illusion of friendship shatters like a gossamer wineglass, and one of the friends ends up dead. Everyone has their motivations. Everyone has something to hide.

Here’s to a weekend in the valley. Drink up and watch your back.

At sixteen she gains admission to the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, and at eighteen she becomes the lead violist, co-conductor, and spokesperson for Zohra, the first all-female orchestra in the Muslim world.

Despite Zarifa’s accomplishments―which include a stunning performance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland―her future in music demands a reckoning with her life back home. Many of the girls in Zohra are forced to marry, but Zarifa yearns to study, travel, and explore her independence. Her so-called “bad girl” identity puts her at odds with her culture and her family.

Playing for Freedom is the deeply compelling story of a woman who dares to compose a masterpiece even with all odds stacked against her.

Switchblade Flying Car Featured in Book by NY Times Bestselling Author

Sam Bousfield, developer of the Switchblade Flying Sports Car and CEO Samson Sky was one of several “flying vehicle” innovators interviewed by futurist and NY Times Business Bestselling author, Chuck Martin for his book, Flying Vehicles – The Emergence of Personal Air Travel, Flying Cars, and Air Taxis. “Martin is considered one of the foremost emerging technology experts in the world and we are honored to be covered in his latest book,” said Bousfield. The original interview is in fact live online and can be enjoyed as a podcast now.

In describing this emerging industry, Martin points out, “This is happening in a very big way. Yes, the business world is experiencing yet another transformation, in this case relating to the movement of people and things. This emerging technology is about transporting people and things totally differently than in the past and creating efficiencies to travel to locations previously out of practical reach.”

In the book, Martin calls the Switchblade, “The Fast-Flying Car,” noting that Bousfield counters the perception of vehicles that both drive and fly require a compromise on one or both aspects. “We never agreed that a flying and driving vehicle has to be mediocre in one or both modes,” stated Bousfield. “We developed the Switchblade to be high-performance both driving and flying.”

Martin lays out the future steps that are being planned to accommodate these new flying vehicles, including some already in the works, and describes how these vehicles will be integrated into our environment, and how people may expect to use them. He covers how Samson initially aimed their marketing towards the pilot population, and recently discovered an increase in non-pilots reserving their vehicle. Says Bousfield, “People are becoming more and more open to this new form of transportation, and the Switchblade saves time and reduces stress for anyone who regularly travels for business or pleasure.”

Samson’s flying sports car, which had its maiden flight in November, 2023, has a unique hybrid electric system, which uses unleaded auto gas rather than leaded aviation fuel. Owners can fuel up at any auto gas station. The Switchblade’s Skybrid™ hybrid electric drive system for flying cars is also cutting edge, and sets the stage for future all-electric versions of this popular flying car. This system has features found in no other vehicle on earth.

From your garage, you drive your street-legal Switchblade to a nearby airport. Once there, you transform the vehicle from driving to flying mode, and fly to the airport closest to your destination, where you land, transform back to driving mode and drive the last few miles to your final destination. The Switchblade seats two, side-by-side, with room to store travel bags, and flies up to 500 miles on a single tank of gas.

New Book Explains the Economic Forces that Have Shaped U.S. Financial History Since 1790

0

Most investors base their decisions only on their life experience, which causes them to overlook powerful forces that repeatedly reshape financial systems, economies, and securities markets. Investing in U.S. Financial History explains these forces by recounting the key events that shaped the financial history of the United States from 1790 to the present day. The work is the product of a nearly four-year research effort, and it stands alone as the first book to recount the entirety of U.S. financial history in a single volume.

Readers often feel intimidated by financial concepts, but author Mark J. Higgins, CFA, CFP® reassures them that the book was written to educate both experts and beginners. David J. Cowen, President and CEO of the Museum of American Finance reinforced this sentiment, stating No matter your level of knowledge about markets, this book is a phenomenal resource to learn from the past, ensuring better investment decisions for the future.”

While the book has broad applications, two primary beneficiaries are investment professionals and business school students (both graduate and undergraduate). Commenting on the application to the investment profession, Michelle Seitz, founder and CEO of MeydenVest Partners and former chair and CEO of Russell Investments stated, The insights in this book can be used to place market events into an appropriate context. I expect it to function as a durable reference for all investment professionals. Commenting on the use in the academic setting, Richard Sylla, a renowned economic historian and Professor Emeritus of Economics at the NYU Stern School of Business stated, Higgins’s book provides students with valuable historical perspectives, which they often lack but need to have because in financial history the same mistakes are repeated over and over again.

Higgins also believes that the book offers value to financial policymakers – both in the United States and abroad. For example, he asserted that if central bankers had studied the dynamics of the post-World War I/Great Influenza inflation of 1919-1920, perhaps they would have recognized that post COVID-19 inflation was unlikely to be “transitory.” Further, trustees of institutional investment plans and individual investors may benefit from learning about the history of index funds and the dangers of alternative asset classes. Excited about the broad application, Higgins concluded:

“Over the past four years, I discovered that understanding financial history was far more valuable than trying to make sense of the constant noise that emanates from financial markets. By taking a trip into the distant past, investors may return with a newfound ability to see the repetitive, long-wave cycles that shaped Americas’s past and are likely to determine its future. I am thrilled to share these insights with readers, and I hope that it improves decisions of investment professionals, trustees, academics, government policy makers, and individuals in the U.S. and abroad.”

Investing in U.S. Financial History is available for purchase through multiple online venues and in select bookstores throughout the world. In addition to his work as a financial historian and author, Mark Higgins serves as a senior vice president and institutional advisor for Index Fund Advisors (IFA) Institutional.
