Domestic Violence Expert Unveils Transformative Book on Child Protection

0

David Mandel, a renowned expert in domestic violence intervention and child welfare, announces the release of his groundbreaking book, Stop Blaming Mothers and Ignoring Fathers: How to Transform the Way We Keep Children Safe from Domestic ViolenceThis essential read is aimed at both professionals in the field and survivors, offering a new perspective on the systemic issues surrounding the safety and well-being of children in domestic violence situations.

Mandel’s book challenges the pervasive myths that undermine effective intervention in domestic violence cases, focusing on the critical errors of blaming mothers while overlooking the role of fathers. Through engaging narrative, case studies, testimonials, and innovative comic art, Mandel delves into the six key myths that distort professional practice and hinder the protection of children.

“Stop Blaming Mothers and Ignoring Fathers not only critiques these myths but also provides practical tools and strategies, such as the Safe & Together Model and the Perpetrator Pattern Mapping Tool, to reshape the way professionals and systems respond to domestic violence,” said Mandel. “The book emphasizes the importance of partnering with survivors, addressing perpetrator behavior as a parenting choice, and acknowledging the efforts of protective mothers.”

The virtual book launch on February 28, 2024, will offer an opportunity for readers to engage directly with the author and discuss the book’s implications for improving outcomes for children and families affected by domestic violence.

David Mandel’s insightful work promises to be a catalyst for change, encouraging a shift toward more ethical, efficient, and effective responses to domestic violence, and fostering environments where children can remain safe and together with their protective parent.

The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden Del Rey

During the Great War, a combat nurse searches for her brother, believed dead in the trenches despite eerie signs that suggest otherwise, in this hauntingly beautiful historical novel with a speculative twist, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Bear and the Nightingale.

January 1918. Laura Iven was a revered field nurse until she was wounded and discharged from the medical corps, leaving behind a brother still fighting in Flanders. Now home in Halifax, Canada, Laura receives word of Freddie’s death in combat, along with his personal effects—but something doesn’t make sense. Determined to uncover the truth, Laura returns to Belgium as a volunteer at a private hospital, where she soon hears whispers about haunted trenches and a strange hotelier whose wine gives soldiers the gift of oblivion. Could Freddie have escaped the battlefield, only to fall prey to something—or someone—else?

November 1917. Freddie Iven awakens after an explosion to find himself trapped in an overturned pillbox with a wounded enemy soldier, a German by the name of Hans Winter. Against all odds, the two form an alliance and succeed in clawing their way out. Unable to bear the thought of returning to the killing fields, especially on opposite sides, they take refuge with a mysterious man who seems to have the power to make the hellscape of the trenches disappear.

As shells rain down on Flanders, and ghosts move among those yet living, Laura’s and Freddie’s deepest traumas are reawakened. Now they must decide whether their world is worth salvaging—or better left behind entirely.

The Ideal Life: 7 Steps to Harness Your Stress, Discover Your Purpose, and Achieve Your Goals by Mark Congdon is now available. The book is published with Forbes Books, the exclusive business book publishing imprint of Forbes, and is available today on Amazon.

Mark Congdon’s new book asks readers to confront a lie that most have been telling since they were old enough to lie: “I’ll be happy if I can just get what I want.”

With The Ideal Life, Congdon endeavors to reveal the real truth about human happiness.

The truth is, attainment for attainment’s sake dampens our reward system, and leaves us feeling listless. Humans, in Congdon’s view, are happiest when they are striving and seeking—when they have purpose. In a society that too often elevates materialism and advances distorted expectations of “the good life” on social media, many people don’t know what they actually want or why they want it—they just want.

The tragic results are lives of confusion and constant comparison. The life many think they want is forever out of reach. It leaves people feeling lost, directionless, stressed, anxious, and depressed. “If happiness was just about getting what we want, then the instant gratification of today’s society should be creating access to a modern utopia,” Congdon said. “But instead, more stuff has only led to more stress.”

Congdon’s book teaches readers the fundamental design of their inner reward system so they can take back control of the chemicals that cause stress and anxiety and convert them into powerful tools for discovering purpose and achieving goals. Supported by the latest breakthroughs in biology and psychology applied to Mark’s real-life practical experience, The Ideal Life will give readers the tools they need for purposeful, joyful living.

New Release: THE HEADMASTERS By Mark Morton

THE HEADMASTERS By Mark Morton

Mark Morton’s debut YA novel, The Headmasters, called “a brilliant science-fiction debut” by Robert J. Sawyer

Noted Canadian non-fiction author and long-time CBC columnist Mark Morton makes his debut as a novelist with The Headmasters; a gripping, provocative post-apocalyptic dystopian young adult tale that asks the question, “How do you learn from the past if there isn’t one?”

Sixty years ago as The Headmasters opens, something awful happened. Something that killed everyone except the people at Blue Ring, a research facility in northern Ontario. Something that caused the Headmasters to appear. But young Maple doesn’t know what it was. Because talking about the past is forbidden.

Everyone at Blue Ring has a Headmaster. They sink their sinewy coils into your skull and control you, using your body for backbreaking toil and your mind to communicate with each other.

When someone dies, their Headmaster transfers to someone new. But so do the dead person’s memories, and if one of those memories surfaces in the new host’s mind, their brain breaks. That’s why talking about the past is forbidden.

Maple hates this world where the past can’t exist and the future promises only more suffering. And she hates the Headmasters for making it that way. But she doesn’t know how to fight them – until memories start to surface in her mind from someone who long ago came close to defeating the Headmasters.

But whose memories are they? Why aren’t they harming her? And how can she use them to defeat the Headmasters? Maple has to find the answers herself, unable to tell anyone what she’s experiencing or planning—not even Thorn, the young man she’s falling in love with.

Thorn, who has some forbidden secrets of his own . . .

Praise for The Headmasters
“Mark Morton’s The Headmasters is a brilliant science-fiction debut from one of Canada’s best-loved nonfiction writers. This compelling YA novel is a spot-on updating of Robert A. Heinlein’s classic The Puppet Masters for the new millennium, with intricate world-building, a great science-fiction puzzle, and — ironic for a novel about suppressed memories — a main character you’ll never forget. I loved it.”Robert J. Sawyer, Hugo Award-winning author of The Downloaded

Mandy Moore Leads All-Star Cast in Audible Original “The Boar’s Nest”

0

Audible and Fresh Produce Media, the audio-first creative company, today announced The Boar’s Nest: Sue Brewer and the Birth of Outlaw Country Music. The new scripted podcast, starring singer, songwriter, producer and Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globe, Grammy and Emmy-nominated actress Mandy Moore, tells the story of Sue Brewer, an unsung hero of the Outlaw Country music movement whose home became the epicenter of the scene in 1960s Nashville. Crucial to launching careers for the likes of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Shel Silverstein, and Kris Kristofferson, Brewer’s humble living room floor—lovingly referred to as “The Boar’s Nest” —served as a raucous but nurturing creative hotbed for artistic outsiders on the road to becoming legends. Brewer shaped the sound and soul of Country music as we know it today, despite never picking up an instrument herself.

The Boar’s Nest: Sue Brewer and the Birth of Outlaw Country Music is set to premiere March 14, exclusively from Audible.

“The beauty of telling this story in audio is that listeners will find themselves completely immersed in the heart of the Nashville music scene at such an exciting time in its history,” says Mandy Moore. “Sue Brewer’s pioneering legacy is one that is often overlooked despite her resounding impact on Outlaw country and some of its most celebrated artists. I’m honored to pay homage to her and the music revolution she helped ignite from her living room.”

Emmy-winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear) joins Moore as Shel Silverstein, and the cast is rounded out by W. Earl Brown (Deadwood) as Waylon Jennings, Stephen Louis Grush (Night Sky) as Willie Nelson, John Hoogenakker (Dopesick) as Kris Kristofferson, TJ Osborne (Brothers Osborne) as Johnny Cash, Brad Leland (Friday Night Lights) as Faron Young, Maury Morgan (This Is Us) as music executive Frances Preston, Quincy Dunn-Baker (The Righteous Gemstones) as Chet Atkins, and Liz Sharpe (Tenants) as Frances Beer.

Told through the eyes and ears of Sue, the Audible Original is a complex and authentic portrayal of the birth of Outlaw Country, spotlighting the personal and artistic struggles that were required to launch some of Country music’s most trailblazing artists. Each episode showcases one of Sue’s famous songwriting salons and features new recordings of Country classics, bringing listeners into the creative process as each artist strums, hums, and sings them into existence. The newly-performed renditions include Jennings’ “Nashville Bum;” Nelson’s “Hello Walls,” and “Family Bible;” Kristofferson’s “For the Good Times” and “Sunday Morning Coming Down;” Shel Silverstein’s “On Susan’s Floor,” inspired by Brewer; the Everly Brothers “Wake Up Little Susie,” and the gospel standard “I’ll Fly Away.” Through the music, listeners get to know these rising stars as Sue knew them.

Fresh Produce CEO Jason Ross said, “The Boar’s Nest captures the heart at the center of a transformative era in country music. As a fan of these iconic artists, and a former musician myself, watching the music for the show come together with Dub Cornett and producer John ‘Ferg’ Ferguson – who collaborated with John Prine and Johnny Cash, and was there when this movement took place—was a really special way into the intimate, meaningful moments we wanted to portray. Sue was a pioneering woman who never got the public praise she deserved, and I think the writing team nailed the vision of changing that.”

Mick Jagger and Victoria Pearman’s Jagged Films, Bill Gerber (A Star is Born), and Nashville-based Oso Studios collaborated with Fresh Produce Media and Audible on the podcast, and Kimberly Senior served as director. The Boar’s Nest was created and written by producer Dub Cornett (Tales of the Tour Bus), who shared writing duties with Nashville legend Holly Gleason and writer Rachel Bonds – Fresh Produce Media’s Elena Bawiec was Head of Production, and FPM CEO Jason Ross and CCO Colin Moore Executive Produced.

I am delighted “The Boar’s Nest” is completed and will be launched on Audible with Mandy Moore playing Sue Brewer. Set amongst now-legendary country artists in Nashville, Sue created a haven for the emerging talent of that time.

MICK JAGGER

“I am delighted The Boar’s Nest is completed and will be launched on Audible with Mandy Moore playing Sue Brewer. Set amongst now-legendary country artists in Nashville, Sue created a haven for the emerging talent of that time,” said Mick Jagger. “My dear friend Steve Bing brought the idea to us, and sadly left us before completion.”

The series is produced by Fresh Produce and joins other successful titles from Audible’s collaboration with the audio-first company, including the noir drama The Big Lie starring Jon Hamm and Kate Mara; the music storytelling series Origins featuring Doja Cat, Tobe Nwigwe, Billie Eilish and others; In the Room with Peter Bergen, a weekly podcast exploring the news from a nonpartisan and uniquely security-focused lens; Punk in Translation, a bilingual documentary series exploring the Latin roots of punk music which featured Joan Jett, Jello Biafra, and more; and The Introvert’s Survival Guide, hosted by Aparna Nancherla, featuring life tips for introverts with the likes of Seth Meyers, Elyse Myers, and more.

THE WAVES TAKE YOU HOME by María Alejandra Barrios Vélez
(Available for pre-order)

In this heartfelt story about how the places we run from hold the answers to our deepest challenges, the death of her grandmother brings a young woman home. There she must face the past in order to become the heir of not just the family restaurant, but her own destiny.

Inspired by the resilience and strength of the women in her family and Barranquilla, Colombia, the Caribbean city in which she spent most of her life, María Alejandra Barrios Vélez has written a tender and emotional debut novel, THE WAVES TAKE YOU HOME (Lake Union; March 19, 2024) about the unbreakable bonds of three generations of women, the complicated relationships between mothers and daughters and the circumstances that call us home. From the unforgettable characters and bustling setting to the gripping love story and mouthwatering descriptions of local delicacies, THE WAVES TAKE YOU HOME will draw you in and keep you hooked.

Ten years after she immigrated to the United States, twenty-eight-year-old Violeta Sanoguera goes home to Barranquilla, Colombia at the news of her grandmother’s death. Her grandmother was the one who insisted Violeta leave in the first place – to escape a love she didn’t approve, to avoid making the same mistakes she did, and to pursue a better life. But now Violeta learns she’s inherited Caminito, their failing family restaurant.

Violeta resolves to honor these final wishes and stay—long enough, at least, to save Caminito. Accompanied at all times by the ghost of her grandmother who reminds her of the choices she’s made and the ones that lie ahead, Violeta embarks on a journey that leads her to rediscover her home, her mother and grandmother, and the flame of an old love. She tastes food and experiences sensations not felt in years and uncovers deeply kept family secrets written in the pages of her grandmother’s journal and begins to question everything.

THE WAVES TAKE YOU HOME is a novel from an exciting new voice that sheds light on how our ancestors shape our lives, food as memory, and facing the past in order to build a life that’s truly your own. A novel that will dare you to choose boldly, all while making you crave a slice of pineapple rum- upside down cake or a steaming plate of paella.
