The Ark and the Dove: The Story of Noah’s Wife by Jill Eileen Smith

Biblical fiction powerhouse Jill Eileen Smith returns to the shelves this winter with another thought-provoking and impactful exploration of biblical times. Packed with detailed research and insight, The Ark and the Dove invites readers to journey with Noah’s wife through the end of the world as she knew it and into the birth of a new era.

When the Creator tells Noah to build an ark in preparation for the eradication of humankind, Noah’s wife Emzara finds herself part of a mission that seems ludicrous. All that remains of God’s faithful ones are Zara’s immediate family. Amid ridicule and slander from neighbors and friends, she persists in helping to build an ark that will save her family and protect God’s creation. While her heart breaks for the misguided people they will leave behind, Zara’s faith in the Creator urges her forward on this weighty mission.

But Zara quickly learns that her family did not leave their troubles behind on dry ground. Beyond the monotony and hard work of living aboard the ark for months, conflict continually arises. Sin has found them even aboard the isolated boat, and it continues to persist on the reborn earth. Despite the Creator’s plan, drunkenness, pride, and greed plague the hearts of humanity.

How can Zara cling to hope and faith despite the brokenness of the world around her, and how can she hold her family together in the aftermath of their sinful choices? Can Zara find the comfort and courage she needs in the Creator’s promises?

Experience the story of Noah and the flood like you never have before in The Ark and the Dove.

Behind The Words With Sarah Sundin

Today, we welcome EMBERS IN THE LONDON SKY author Sarah Sundin to the blog. Welcome Sarah. Tell our readers a bit about Embers in the London Sky.

Fleeing from the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands in 1940, Aleida van der Zee Martens is separated from her three-year-old son, Theo. In London, the widow desperately searches for her little boy while working for an agency responsible for evacuating children to the countryside. BBC radio correspondent Hugh Collingwood does what he can to help her, even as he’s reporting on the London Blitz. When murders begin to flame among London’s ashes—murders that hit close to home for Hugh—Aleida and Hugh become determined to find the murderer before it’s too late.

What events were taking place in London from 1940 to 1941?

By June 1940, the Germans had trampled the Netherlands, Belgium, and France, and Britain was next. The nation prepared for invasion as the Battle of Britain raged overhead and German bombers pummeled London. It was a time of great fear and danger and trepidation, and yet also a time of courage and strength as the nation drew together as never before. Britain’s fortitude and good will in this time of trial continues to inspire us today. It was a privilege for me to write about this critical moment in history.

When Aleida van der Zee Martens fled from the Netherlands, she not only lost her home but her child was taken from her. Can you provide some background on the details leading up to this traumatic situation?

Long before the German army arrived, Aleida had planned to flee to England with her son—to escape her abusive husband. But when the invasion comes, her husband decides to take his wife and son to London. However, he is ashamed of little Theo’s hand deformity, and one night while Aleida is sleeping, he takes Theo from her arms and thrusts him into the car of an English couple. The next morning, Aleida is horrified to find her son gone. And when her husband is killed by a strafing German fighter plane—without telling her the name of the English couple—Aleida faces the daunting prospect of finding her son.

When Aleida arrives in London, she takes a job with the Ministry of Health, which is responsible for evacuating children to the countryside. How did she use her role to help her look for her son?

When Britain went to war with Germany in September 1939, they evacuated over a million children to the countryside. When German bombing failed to materialize, many families brought their children home. But with the invasion threat in 1940, the government mounted a new wave of evacuations.

At first, Aleida hopes the Ministry of Health might have information on her son. In her new position, she contacts billeting officers in the country—and she always asks about Theo. But as she hears the evacuation stories, she senses a new role developing—to advocate for the children.

BBC radio correspondent Hugh Collingwood is caught in the middle of the London Blitz. What part does he hope to play in the war?

Hugh’s golden voice and lively radio reporting have made him a rising star with the BBC. He sees great value in live, on-the-scene reporting. However, with the risk of invasion and the concern about sending information to the enemy over the airwaves, many push for censorship. Hugh and his journalist friends walk a delicate line between telling the truth and revealing sensitive information—all while boosting morale.

How did your two protagonists, Aleida van der Zee Martens and Hugh Collingwood, meet?

While Aleida is training to become an air raid warden, Hugh arrives to broadcast from her Air Raid Precautions post. Afterward, Aleida asks him to broadcast a story about her son— if Theo is in England, someone might recognize him. Although Hugh is unable to tell that story, he is drawn to the young widow and does what he can to help her.

How do both Aleida and Hugh come to help each other through their various difficulties?

Since Hugh has family connections in government, he provides leads to Aleida on where and how to search for her son. More importantly, his good-natured friendship helps when fear and anxiety swamp her. And when murders flame up in Hugh’s circle, Aleida’s levelheaded thinking helps Hugh consider the various suspects.

What are some of the main themes in Embers in the London Sky?

When does telling the truth become reckless endangerment—and when does discretion become censorship? The story also explores humanity’s ongoing struggle to accept those of different nationalities and social classes, those with disabilities, and those we disagree with. Do we cast them aside—or do we go out of our way to care for them?

How did you become interested in writing World War II novels?

Family stories drew me to the World War II era. During the war, my great-uncle was a B- 17 bomber pilot, one of my grandfathers served in the US Navy, and my other grandfather taught American soldiers the German language through the US Army Specialized Training Program. Growing up hearing these stories—plus my father’s love for WWII movies!— gave me a love for the era.

Where can readers purchase a copy of Embers in the London Sky?

Embers in the London Sky can be purchased at your local bookstore, or through Baker Book House, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, ChristianBook.com, and other online vendors.

How can readers connect with you?

I love to hear from readers! You can find me on my website at SarahSundin.com or on social media on Facebook (@SarahSundinAuthor), Twitter (@SarahSundin), or Instagram (@SarahSundinSuthor).

Thank you so much for joining us today, Sarah. Reader’s EMBERS IN THE LONDON SKY releases February 6th. Here’s a quick look::::

As the German army invades the Netherlands in 1940, Aleida van der Zee Martens escapes to London to wait out the Occupation. Separated from her three-year-old son, Theo, in the process, the young widow desperately searches for her little boy even as she works for an agency responsible for evacuating children to the countryside.

When German bombs set London ablaze, BBC radio correspondent Hugh Collingwood reports on the Blitz, eager to boost morale while walking the fine line between truth and censorship. But the Germans are not the only ones Londoners have to fear as a series of murders flame up amid the ashes.

The deaths hit close to home for Hugh, and Aleida needs his help to locate her missing son. As they work together, they grow closer and closer, both to each other and the answers they seek. But with bombs falling and continued killings, they may be running out of time.

We Are Only Ghosts by Jeffrey L. Richards

An exhilarating, brutally candid saga about sexuality and war, tenderness and trauma, young desire and fierce hate, as a teenage boy’s unexpected, complicated relationship with a Nazi officer in a WWII death camp is resurrected in 1960s New York City.

We Are Only Ghosts depicts queer love against the horrors of death camps and the psychosis of those who got out alive—haunted forever by those who did not—balancing the violence and hatred of war and its aftermath with many poignant moments of tenderness and joy. For readers of A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne, and Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart.

New York City, 1968: The customers at Café Marie don’t come just for the excellent coffee and pastries. They come for the sophisticated ambiance, and the illusion of being somewhere other than a bustling, exhausting city. Headwaiter Charles Ward helps create that illusion through impeccable service—unobtrusive, nearly invisible, yet always watchful.

It’s a skill Charles honed as a young Jewish boy in war-torn Europe, when avoiding attention might mean the difference between life and death. But even then, one man saw him all too clearly—a Nazi officer who was both his savior and tormentor.

At seventeen, Charles was deported to Auschwitz with his family. There he was singled out by Obersturmführer Berthold Werden, who hid him in his home. Their entanglement produced a tortured affection mixed with hatred that flares to life again, decades later, when Berthold walks into Café Marie.

Drawn back into Berthold’s orbit, Charles is forced to revisit the pain and the brief, undeniable pleasures of the life he once knew. And if he acts on his growing hunger for revenge, will he lose his only tether to the past—the only other witness to who he was and everything he endured—or find peace at last?

From the co-creator of the Eisner Award-winning Powers, comes a brand-new anthropomorphic supernatural series where supernatural evils must be fought at all costs! Dark Horse Comics and Michael Avon Oeming (The Victories, Blue Book) present William of Newbury, a four-issue series beginning in May 2024.

William of Newbury is a tale suitable for all ages, fit for lovers of history, the supernatural and, of course, anthropomorphic folklore. William is a neurotic raccoon monk, fearful of the earthly world, but confident and unwavering in the face of true evil. He fights the dead to restore the peace, but his brother is intent on stopping him, fearing for his very soul! With untold darkness threatening the quaint and cute, yet deadly, town of Newbury, William will have to negotiate with thieves, evade his brother and the church, and battle with the undead and evil spirits!

William of Newbury wrote the first history of England,” said Oeming. “Which included accounts of the undead rising from graves and demons flying in the air. I love weird history and William personified it. Come and have some spooky fun with me; Newbury is a safe place to be scared!”

Loosely based on real events in 12th century England during what was known as “The Anarchy,” a time where the country was beset with plague, civil war and demons, William of Newbury #1 (of 4) arrives in comic shops May 29, 2024. Pre-order at your local comic shop for $4.99.

Praise for William of Newbury:

“I became a fan of Michael Oeming’s work from the first time I read Powers, and Willam of Newbury just makes me appreciate his work even more with his beautiful storytelling, artwork, and research into creating such a unique world and characters. If you are not already an Oeming fan this will make you one!”—Stan Sakai

“Historical sources? A Raccoon who turns unsettled spirits? Threading the needle with a bit of Elis Peters’ strong minded monk Cadfael and a blessing of medieval ghost hunting, Mike Oeming has woven more wonderful fibers into the rich tapestry of talking animal stories with his William of Newburgh.”—David Petersen

“It’s kinda like the Exorcist meets the Secret of Nimh meets The Name of the Rose. So, of course I’m in.”—Eric Powell

Sneak Peek: Mark Morton’s debut YA novel, The Headmasters

0

The Headmasters By Mark Morton

Noted Canadian non-fiction author and long-time CBC columnist Mark Morton makes his debut as a novelist with The Headmasters, coming February 6 from Shadowpaw Press; a gripping, provocative post-apocalyptic dystopian young adult tale that asks the question, “How do you learn from the past if there isn’t one?”

Sixty years ago as The Headmasters opens, something awful happened. Something that killed everyone except the people at Blue Ring, a research facility in northern Ontario. Something that caused the Headmasters to appear. But young Maple doesn’t know what is was. Because talking about the past is forbidden.

Everyone at Blue Ring has a Headmaster. They sink their sinewy coils into your skull and control you, using your body for backbreaking toil and your mind to communicate with each other.

When someone dies, their Headmaster transfers to someone new. But so do the dead person’s memories, and if one of those memories surfaces in the new host’s mind, their brain breaks. That’s why talking about the past is forbidden.

Maple hates this world where the past can’t exist and the future promises only more suffering. And she hates the Headmasters for making it that way. But she doesn’t know how to fight them – until memories start to surface in her mind from someone who long ago came close to defeating the Headmasters.

But whose memories are they? Why aren’t they harming her? And how can she use them to defeat the Headmasters? Maple has to find the answers herself, unable to tell anyone what she’s experiencing or planning—not even Thorn, the young man she’s falling in love with.

Thorn, who has some forbidden secrets of his own . . .

Praise for The Headmasters
“Mark Morton’s The Headmasters is a brilliant science-fiction debut from one of Canada’s best-loved nonfiction writers. This compelling YA novel is a spot-on updating of Robert A. Heinlein’s classic The Puppet Masters for the new millennium, with intricate world-building, a great science-fiction puzzle, and — ironic for a novel about suppressed memories — a main character you’ll never forget. I loved it.”Robert J. Sawyer, Hugo Award-winning author of The Downloaded

The Journey of the Shamanic Sage Woman By Billie Topa Tate

0

The timeless landscape of the Sage Woman crosses the span of energy and time. The forgotten Woman Sage is still quietly waiting within all women. Many of the traditions and wisdom logs of the Woman Sage have not been provided, and thus our society of women have lost touch with the Woman Sage. If you look back within many of the mystical books, nearly all Masters and Medicine Men across several cultures have received their training from women sages, female master teachers, and when you think about it, as our children grow, it is often the mother that influences their lives. I recall during my training as a young girl feeling the power of extremely wisdom-filled women sages and learning that even Mother Earth (which carries the existence of all the kingdoms of our world as we know it) is of female energy.

I believe you would agree that, if more Sage Women were siting within our government systems around the world, the world as we know it would be very very different. Simply put, the decisions within our government would encompass compassion, wisdom, and the true sense of fairness for all.

As a working shaman female spirit in an 8am – 5pm job, you may feel the need to exude the qualities of male strength because, for the most part, that is all we see in the world of decision makers. It is easy to neglect our feminine side, the mystical side of us. The Sage Woman has a strong and loving will that maintains the quality of courage, and uses that will to facilitate energy that will manifest not only wisdom but help bring awareness, change, peace, beauty, wellness, and technological advancement. This brings Sacred Balance into every aspect of themselves and whatever they touch.

Today I will share some mystical information that has not been shared outside of my training. Since we have a short period of time here, I have selected a few pivotal wisdom topics. (If you are interested in a more in-depth and thorough coverage of these topics, you can join me for my upcoming retreats and classes).

1. The Invisible Energy in Time and Space
We are all energy, and everything is energy. The qualities of energy are endless, because we are always creating and redefining the world. This is the gift the Creator gave us: the power of choice. Let’s talk about the internal universe for a moment. Let us talk about the landscape of the micro universe. For the sake of time, we can talk about our red blood cells. Mystically, what rides on the red blood cells are 2 molecules of energy. Our karma and our dharma and our breath fires one or the other. What launches either the karma or dharma molecule is THE BREATH. But, the breath is vitalized by our feelings and more importantly our thoughts. The goal, of course, for the Sage Woman is to navigate the breath to fire the dharma molecule rather than the karma molecule, thus launching us into becoming wise and overpowering the karmic limitations. The invisible energy in time and space in one respect—that I can share with you—is to teach the Sage Woman to activate within your cells by using Sacred Breath and say the magic words: “There is knowledge and wisdom that I call upon to know and I adjust my energy to receive.” Then, be in stillness and listen to the sound of your breath and let your mind take you for a mystical journey of information, assessments, strategies and much more. Write them down, think more about them, and reassure yourself that you will receive and become better at understanding the information. This is where meditation is also important.

2. The Symbols Throughout the Universe
Symbols during meditation, dream time, vision time, turning points, and epiphanies are all platforms where the universe will reach out and touch you. However, in the beginning especially, how can you know what is correct? It is important from the beginning to endeavor to becoming accurate, correct, and precise with what you are seeing and feeling. Therefore, whenever we ask to receive information, we must train our energy field to filter anything that is inaccurate. Use this narrative: “To my energy field and my consciousness, secure only accurate, correct, and precise information. All other energies are not permitted into my assessments. In full faith so be it. Thank you.”

3. Making Time for Your Spiritual and Energetic Platform
Guard your sacred time. One powerful way of awakening and nurturing the Sage Woman is through meditation. Meditation in the morning will create the platform that will establish a deeper connection with all your wonderful helpers and your inner spirit that has endless power for you and the world. Before mediation, create a sacred intention to secure more healing energy from your Sage Woman energy and to empower your medicine energy to be part of your day. Treat this sacred time like any other important appointment by not canceling on yourself.

4. Additional Information
If you are interested in additional information to help you cultivate your powerful Sage Woman energy, I invite you to attend my upcoming lectures and workshops (additional information can be found on my website). Topics will include:

  • What is the mind, and why do we have consciousness?
  • Be not afraid of your dreams of what you want to bring into this world.
  • Utilize natural resources in a way that can revitalize our natural resources; this is the key to the future.

For even more information, I invite you to check out my book, Spirit Guide Invocations. Drawing from the sacred world of Spirit, this medicine woman book helps you utilize the energy platform of the indigenous Apache tradition through potent writings called invocations. From relieving stress to sending love to those who have passed away, the placement of words as an energy tool can unlock so many possibilities, regardless of your background or experience level.
