“SUBTERRANEAN” BY JAMES ROLLINS
Ashley Carter is a single mom (to Jason) and a Paleoanthropology Assistant Professor specializing in cliff-dwelling primatives.
What in the world would the U.S. Government want her for?
Well, they need her to lead a team of biologists, geologists, and caving experts on a “research” mission beneath the Antarctic Ice Shelf. Ashley is not convinced she wants to do this until Dr. Blakely shows her a statuette made completely out of diamond that was taken from the, mostly unexplored, caves under Mount Erebus, Antarctica.
Ashley’s team will explore and research the areas caves, dwellings, and to learn as much as they can about life (if there is any) under the ice shelf.
A perfectly safe research expedition.
Agreeing to lead the team as long as Jason can come along (he will stay in the saftey of Alpha Base while the team is exploring). Ashley meets the remainder of her team: Ben an Australian cave expert, Linda a biologist, Khalid a geologist, and three military men for protection: Major Michaelson, U.S. Marines, and two Navy SEALs.
Protection? Wait…..I thought this was a perfectly safe research expedition?
Ooops…
Below the ice shelf the team discovers unimaginable beauty, intelligent, highly evolved, marsupials and death and destruction from vicious beasts that are both intelligent and deadly.
To make matters worse: One of the team members is claustrophobic, one is telepathic, and one……..is a traitor.
To find out what happens, you will have to read the book.
“Subterranean” is a fast-paced action-packed adventure that you have to put down just to catch your breath. I found myself looking a few pages ahead just so I could try to prepare myself for the next shocking twist.
I never was fully prepared, but, that’s James Rollins for you. 🙂
