RWA – Romance Writer’s of America has filed for bankruptcy sighting financial reasons.

Founded in 1980 by Vivian Stephens a romance editor, papers show the organization is nearly $3-million dollars in debt to hotels, and owes nearly $80,000 to various other creditors.

In recent years, membership has taken a decided nose-dive, and contracts could not be fulfilled.

These issues were also complicated by allegations of racism as reported a few years ago in LitHub.

Although measures were taken to address the allegations, membership dropped and never fully recovered. The predominantly female membership will hopefully have some options to recover, as this has been a dominate force for the romance genre.
