The Man Booker – Britain’s highest prize in literature will now have some competition in the form of a new literary award – The Folio. Unlike the Man Booker, which excludes everyone except British, Irish, and Commonwealth authors, the Folio will be open to any “English-language” book, printed in the UK.
The first prize in fiction for the winner of the Folio is 40,000 pound ($60,000 US). It’s first award will be presented in March 2014. It has been affectionately dubbed, “The Booker without the bow ties” award. Members of the Folio Society created the prize after a controversy bloomed over the 2011 Man Booker awards when the chair stated that the finalists were “chosen for readability”.
The judges will be a collective of,  “a high-profile group, dotted with Booker and Pulitzer winners, that includes novelists Margaret Atwood, Pat Barker, Peter Carey, Mohsin Hamid, Junot Diaz and Salman Rushdie.”Â
