“At its core, FML feels like a book that has been hit by the world, and still smiles. The smile isn’t without pain, exactly, but it is filled with empathy and courage and character. It rolls with the punches, and truly, I think it might be the perfect book to pair with whatever is coming our way.” – The Indirect Market, Brandon Schatz

“FML is intensely confident, hilarious, and deeply compassionate. It’s a book about everyone doing their best, no one doing okay, and what happens when the stories we tell ourselves to cope with just how crazy shit is look us in the eyes and tell us what’s going to happen next. You’re going to love it.” – The Full Lid, Alasdair Stuart

“This may be a little bit of an emotionally heavy book, but you better believe I’m gonna be checking this out on day one when it hits the shelves.” – Phoenix Comics and Games, October Comics Look Ahead

Sneak Peek: Carson The Magnificent by Bill Zehme, Mike Thomas

0

Carson The Magnificent by Bill Zehme, Mike Thomas

A much-anticipated biography—twenty years in the making—of the entertainer who redefined late-night television and reshaped American culture.

In 2002, Bill Zehme landed one of the most coveted assignments for a magazine writer: an interview with Johnny Carson—the only one he’d granted since retiring from hosting The Tonight Show a decade earlier. Zehme was tapped for the Esquire feature story thanks to his years of legendary celebrity profiles, and the resulting piece portrayed Carson as more human being than showbiz legend. Shortly after Carson’s death in 2005 and urged on by many of those closest to Carson, Zehme signed a contract to do an expansive biography. He toiled on the book for nearly a decade—interviewing dozens of Carson’s colleagues and friends and filling up a storage locker with his voluminous research—before a cancer diagnosis and ongoing treatments halted his progress. When he died in 2023 his obituaries mentioned the Carson book, with New York Times comedy critic Jason Zinoman calling it “one of the great unfinished biographies.”

Yet the hundreds of pages Zehme managed to complete are astounding both for the caliber of their writing and how they illuminate one of the most inscrutable figures in entertainment history: A man who brought so much joy and laughter to so many millions but was himself exceedingly shy and private. Zehme traces Carson’s rise from a magic-obsessed Nebraska boy to a Navy ensign in World War II to a burgeoning radio and TV personality to, eventually, host of The Tonight Show—which he transformed, along with the entirety of American popular culture, over the next three decades. Without Carson, there would be no late-night television as we know it. On a much more intimate level, Zehme also captures the turmoil and anguish that accompanied the success: four marriages, troubles with alcohol, and the devastating loss of a child.

In one passage, Zehme notes that when asked by an interviewer in the mid-80s for the secret to his success, Carson replied simply, “Be yourself and tell the truth.” Completed with help from journalist and Zehme’s former research assistant Mike Thomas, Carson the Magnificent offers just that: an honest assessment of who Johnny Carson really was.

Behind The Words With Elom Akoto

0

Today, we are welcoming author Elom Akoto to the blog. First, tell our readers a bit about yourself. Where you’re from, where you live? Is writing your full-time job?

I’m from Togo, a small country in West Africa, but I now live in Omaha, Nebraska where I teach French full-time at a high school and ESL part-time at a community college. I also like to write.

How long have you been writing?

I’ve committed to writing seriously since 2017, but I’ve written sporadically throughout my teenage years. The third novel I’m working on is the first story I started writing in college back home in Togo.

What does your typical writing day look like?

When I set a deadline to finish a manuscript, I schedule my day so that I have some time to write. I usually write at night when everyone is in bed. When I’m falling behind schedule, I wake up early to write. I write whenever possible when I don’t have a deadline to finish a manuscript.

Tell us about your latest release? Where the idea came from?

I wanted to write a story that explores different immigrants’ viewpoints and experiences of the American Dream. After living in the United States for nearly twenty years, I realized that prospective immigrants are profoundly unaware of many things until they have relocated to the US. But regardless of the many struggles they face, there’s still hope and endless opportunity for everyone in this country.

I would say that I encountered many surprises during this novel’s publication process that made me a more understanding, patient, and compromising person, especially as a writer. Getting published can be as challenging as writing a book, if not more complicated. I’m now better prepared to anticipate certain things when publishing my future works. I’ve learned that getting rejected doesn’t necessarily mean that your writing is worthless and you’re wasting time. Perseverance is critical, and once your work falls into the right hands, the plane for your success gets ready to take off. Being open-minded and willing to let go of things you’ve grown fond of, like the original title you gave to your work, is also essential.

Could you share one detail from your current release with readers that they might not find in the book?

In the book, I mentioned a character, Peter, who trained Kamao for his gas station job. Peter was later killed in the novel. What readers don’t know is that I created this character to pay tribute to my friend Damothar Patak (Pete), a refugee from Nepal, who trained me when I took a gas station job in Atlanta, GA, and who was killed on the job.

Who has been the most difficult character for you to write? Why?

The most challenging character to write was Peter because, unlike the other characters who were all fictional, he wasn’t. And every time I wrote a scene about him, I was filled with emotion.

If you could be one of your characters for a day which character would it be?

If I could be a character for a day, I would like it to be Ayefumi. Ayefumi is the person who has been there for Kamao from the first day they met. He helped him with his college paperwork, finding a job, and navigating the American system as a newcomer. Ayefumi is the symbol of solidarity amongst immigrants. To him, everyone has his first day in a new country, and we all need to be there for one another. He becomes not only the protagonist’s best friend but also an older brother figure to whom he can go with any request. I enjoy being there for others who need to learn to get by in a new environment.

If you could spend the day with your character, what would you do? What would that day look like?

If I could spend a day with a character, I would love that character to be the protagonist, Kamao. Because he is an idealist like me and knowledgeable, I feel like we can have interesting conversations, going around DC and talking about issues that affect our world and our hopes for Africa.

What’s your take on research and how do you do it?

Research plays a critical role in fiction writing because every writer’s nightmare provides inaccurate information that can be proven wrong. Since writing can influence people’s lives one way or another, the writer needs to make sure any factual information they provide is accurate. So, I put a lot of effort and devote considerable time to researching facts I want to include in my work. With advanced technology today, it is much easier to include correct information by looking at reliable sources. I use online search engines and double-check essential information from various reliable sources before adding that to my work.

What’s the most fun thing about being an author?

The fun thing about being an author for me is that you share a part of yourself with the world. Whether you write fantasy that involves a mythical world that no one would ever visit, with fantastical creatures that no one would ever see, these are part of you, dreams you had as a kid, things you unconsciously believe or hope existed. Putting things on paper and in words are things that you want people to feel with you. As a writer, you become a creator of worlds, places you might never go to, and people you might never see or get close to, but you can control them in your book. You have the feeling of holding some power nobody can ever take away from you. I usually don’t mind putting the story aside to devote the necessary time needed for my research. But it goes fast when I put my head to it.

Do you write multiple books at once, or one at a time?

I’ve tried it before, with my first and second novels, although I’m still revising the second one. Once I have a clear idea about every story, like how it starts and ends, writing more than one at a time is easy. I’m working on my third story, and the fourth one that has already settled in my mind has been bugging me to start writing it, so I may begin to write both stories soon.

What’s your favorite writing tool? — software, app, notebook, etc.

I use Microsoft Word, and OneDrive is an advanced technology that saves work easily. Word is convenient, and I like it. I write an outline in a notebook with my erasable pen when the plot is lined up. Then, I type the outline in the Word document and start the story underneath it.

Are there any particular authors that have influenced how you write?

Most of the novels I read before immigrating to the US were in French, even English literature books, like Hemingway’s The Old Man and The Sea and Steinbeck’s The Pearl. So, the authors who have influenced me most are francophone literature writers, such as Mongo Beti, a Cameroonian writer from the post-colonial African literature, and some French writers, such as Victor Hugo, Emile Zola, and Guy Des Cards.

Do you have a secret talent readers would be surprised by?

I’ve developed a curriculum for adult ESL instruction and have written two ESL workbooks.

Your favorite go to drink or food when the world goes crazy!

Water keeps me going. And it’s safer for me than any other drink.

What is your writing kryptonite?

Writing stories in English, being an English learner, is quite challenging.

What do you hope for the most as a writer?

I would like my story to be adapted into a movie.

Thank you Elom for speaking with us today. I have to agree about authors having quite a bit of themselves in their words.

Readers, here’s a quick look at Elom’s latest release Blindspot in America

Blindspot in America gives a provocative depiction of some of the realities immigrants face in the United States—racism and discrimination—but also their hopes and faith in a country that promises freedom and opportunity to all.

Kamao is the son of a prominent Ghanaian academic and incumbent minister of health and is devoted to all that America symbolizes. After immigrating to the United States in pursuit of higher education and the American Dream, he becomes unwittingly entangled with American politics when he meets Lindsey McAdams, the daughter of an influential, anti-immigration senator. As the couple’s feelings grow, so too does the senator’s animosity toward Kamao. Despite support from fellow immigrants Lazo, Ayefumi, and Dania—who follow American Dreams of their own—Kamao soon finds himself drawn into intrigues hidden from the American public that make him question himself and his adopted country. When Kamao is implicated in a murder, Lindsey’s loyalties are tested, Dania must decide if she is willing to risk her own future and security for the sake of justice, and Kamao discovers how far he’ll go to fulfill his American Dream.

Freedom to Read Community Day of Action Rallies Support for America’s Libraries on October 19

0

On the heels of Banned Books Week 2024 (Sept. 22-28), the American Library Association (ALA) and the ALA-founded Unite Against Book Bans campaign are joining some of the nation’s largest and smallest library systems to celebrate America’s libraries, safeguard the freedom to read and encourage civic participation in a Freedom to Read Community Day of Action on October 19.

Organized in partnership with the BrooklynQueens and New York Public Libraries, and the Association for Rural and Small Libraries, the Freedom to Read Community Day of Action is in response to the wave of book banning and censorship that started gathering momentum in 2020. Coordinated attempts to censor reading material continue to impact schools and public libraries nationwide, threatening the First Amendment rights of all Americans.

ALA President Cindy Hohl said, “At a time when our nation and the world is full of division, there is one place in almost every community with a welcome for everyone. At the library, we can make ourselves at home with a familiar story – and we can step outside our comfort zone with a book about unfamiliar places, characters and ideas. There’s no limit to what we can learn, including how to participate in this democracy that gives us the freedom to read. I call on communities across the nation to show up for their libraries – and each other – on October 19.”

More than 100 events in 35 states and the District of Columbia will bring together diverse communities to share positive, galvanizing messages about the power of libraries and the essential role they play in the functioning of American democracy. Many events will highlight the importance of participation in local, state and federal elections, with several hosting on-site voter registration.

“Book banning has surged at an alarming rate in recent years, with a record number of bans reported last year,” said Brooklyn Public Library President and CEO Linda E. Johnson, New York Public Library President Anthony W. Marx and Queens Public Library President and CEO Dennis M. Walcott. The three libraries – some of the largest in the nation – are holding separate events that will feature speakers and activities that honor the joy of reading and thinking independently.

“Librarians nationwide are facing verbal abuse, death threats, and, in some cases, even criminal charges and jail time,” they said. “As bastions of intellectual freedom, public libraries are at the forefront of this battle. On October 19New York City will join our counterparts across the country to stand up for free, unfettered access to information. Upholding diverse perspectives and a broad range of ideas is not only essential to the core mission of libraries, but to our democracy.”

The full list of local event hosts on the Unite Against Book Bans website reveals a diverse array of participating communities:

  • In Texas, the state chapter of Authors Against Book Bans will host a postcard party for community members to write notes of support to school librarians facing challenges.
  • In Rhode Island, library patrons who checked out materials during Banned Books Week are invited to return for an all-ages open book club on October 19.
  • In Alabama, a local business will host a booth at a Halloween-themed family event to talk to people about recognizing the “scary stories” people are telling about books, how to shine a light on the truth, and stand up for the freedom to read.
  • In Utah, event attendees will be invited to visit “quiet corners throughout the library so you can express your right to read the books you choose for yourself, without government interference!”

Other sites are planning read-ins with local leaders, documentary screenings, open mic nights and more.

“In small and rural communities across the country, the freedom to read is essential for fostering informed residents and diverse perspectives,” said Kate Laughlin, Executive Director of ARSL. “Public libraries play a vital role in upholding this American value by providing access to a wide range of materials, hosting community programs, and ensuring that all voices are heard. They serve as safe havens for exploration and education, empowering individuals to engage critically with the world around them. We hope small town America will join ARSL and others in celebrating this community day of action on October 19.”

The Unite Against Book Bans campaign is providing free materials to support in-person events and social media engagement, including an event planning and promotion guide; customizable and printable posters, flyers, buttons, and photo props; a template media advisory; tips for preparing speakers to keep events nonpartisan and welcoming; and ways to take action during and after October 19 to protect the freedom to read. Complete information is available at https://uniteagainstbookbans.org/day-of-action/. To add a virtual or in-person event to the public list, complete the October 19 participation form.

Disney and Lucasfilm Publishing Support the Next Generation of Readers with Star Wars Reads

0

Throughout October, Disney and Lucasfilm Publishing are collaborating with First Book, a nonprofit dedicated to educational equity, and other nonprofits for the 13th annual Star Wars™ Reads month, a celebration that brings the power of books and storytelling to the next generation of storytellers. This year, Star Wars Reads activities focus on supporting under-resourced communities across the country by providing book donations and assistance from Disney VoluntEARS, as well as classroom resources and activity kits. Participants will also have exciting opportunities to engage with authors of Star Wars books.

“Books, comics, and magazines are a treasured and timeless way for readers all over the world to immerse themselves in the excitement of a galaxy far, far away. By collaborating on Star Wars Reads with organizations like First Book, Blue Star Families and New York Edge, we can share the joy of reading with fans of all ages,” said Michael Siglain, creative director, Lucasfilm Publishing.

Lucasfilm Publishing and First Book will kick off the celebration with a livestream event available to First Book’s Network of more than 600,000 educators, professionals and volunteers serving students in under-resourced communities. Disney Publishing will donate nearly 60,000 books across the country, through donations to schools and at community events hosted by nonprofit organizations in First Book’s Network. At these events, children will be invited to pick out their favorite books, including Star Wars titles, to read and take home at no cost. • Later this year, hundreds of military kids and families will celebrate Star Wars Reads at a special event held by Blue Star Families—a nonprofit dedicated to empowering military families to thrive—at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla.

“Books offer so many benefits for children, influencing everything from overall well-being to academic performance. We believe the joy and wonder of reading helps spark imaginations in kids that opens doors to new worlds, inspires creativity and fosters a lifelong love for learning. However, too many children don’t have access to essential resources,” said Dana Bond, executive vice president, Strategic Alliances, First Book. “Disney’s support helps us eliminate these barriers, not only during Star Wars Reads month, but year-round.”

For more than 23 years, Disney has played a crucial role in supporting First Book and its Network of educators and students in underserved communities, creating opportunities that foster future generations’ development.

In August 2024, Disney provided new grants to further support this important mission, including funding the purchase of books for educators across the country through the First Book Marketplace. These grants build upon Disney’s ongoing support of First Book, including financial contributions, book donations, assistance from Disney VoluntEARS and access to skilled Disney experts.

When Pine Hills, Ohio hosts an inter-town murder mystery game, bookstore-café owner and sometimes-sleuth Krissy Hancock assumes it’ll all be in good fun, but that’s before the competition claims its first real-life victim. . .

The unique weekend-long event—a combination of a live-action role playing game and a theatrical production—draws competitors from all the neighboring towns, including Pine Hills’ own Krissy and Rita. Although the actors, clues, and performances are spread across the community, somehow Krissy’s team lands at the one location with an actual body. . .

Police immediately call-off the competition while they conduct a real murder investigation, but soon it’s clear some folks are playing by their own set of rules. So it’s up to Krissy and her pals to shuffle through the suspects and draw out the real killer before another player takes their final turn.

As the weather cools down, business heats up at Deputy Donut Café for owner Emily Westhill. But is a stubborn tabby cat, a mysterious new employee, and a murder case with a baker’s dozen worth of suspects too much to manage?

With mouthwatering treats selling fast in October, Emily is delighted to welcome her assistant’s younger sister, Hannah, to help at the donut shop while taking a semester off from college. But Hannah’s talent for dishing powdered pastries without dropping a crumb attracts some unusual customers, as two admirers with opposite personalities begin to show up during her shifts—much to her older sister’s disappointment . . .

Real trouble comes afterhours in the dark forest surrounding Emily’s lakeside house. Emily follows a trail of her freshly-made beignets—just like those purchased by the two admirers—to a dead body. And while the victim may have burned a few bridges, there’s no way to sugarcoat the discovery of Hannah’s hairclip at the crime scene. Now, as suspicions fall on her own employee and unsavory rumors swirl around town, it will take far more than a sprinkle of good luck for Emily to learn the truth and expose a killer with a very deadly craving . . .
