Book Review: Eleanor and the Cold War By Ellen Yardley

Eleanor and the Cold War By Ellen Yardley

This was truly an ‘era’ book. It took a few minutes for the language and pace of the book to be comfortable. In todays world we all seem to want to get to the point quickly. Once I got into the pace and language nuances of the time period, I enjoyed the journey. The characters were well established and seeing the growth of the main character Kay as she was exposed to a larger world was fun. Even though fictional, peeking into the early, youthful lives of American icons such as JFK, Jackie and a few others was quite enlightening.

I can’t wait for the next book in the series. MR (Mrs. Roosevelt) was handled with care, and tedious research. Although, this modern reader wanted to give them a cell phone sooooo badly! LOL

If you enjoy historical mysteries that are very true to period, you will absolutely want to read Eleanor and The Cold War.

Behind The Words with The Puzzle Box Author Danielle Trussoni

0

Today we’re excited to welcome The Puzzle Box author Danielle Trussoni to the blog. Let’s begin with learning a bit about you. Where you’re from, where you live? Is writing your full-time job?

I was born in La Crosse, WI but have lived all over the world: Japan, England, France, Bulgaria, New York City (which seems like its own country!), and now Mexico.

Writing is my full-time job.

How long have you been writing?

I received my first book contract in 2003, but I’ve been writing since I was a teenager.

What does your typical writing day look like?

Wake up around 7:00, get my daughter off to school and begin writing or working on some aspect of writing (outlining, reading, revising, etc) around 8:30. I write until lunch, take a break, and then do administrative stuff—social media, email, bookkeeping, meetings, etc. until about 3PM.

Could you share one detail from your current release with readers that they might not find in the book?

The story has many inspirations, but the seed of the novel took root in my twenties, when I lived in Japan for two years as a high school English teacher in a village called Yoshii-machi in Fukuoka prefectures in Kyushu, on the southern-most island Japan. I applied for a job teaching English through the JET program, a program run by the Japanese government that placed native English speakers in Japanese schools so that students would have a chance to hear English on a regular basis. Teachers were placed everywhere in Japan, and I found myself in an extremely rural area. I was assigned ‘teachers housing,’ a small apartment in a building next to a rice paddy. My village had a grocery store, an onsen public bath (which I used all the time because my apartment had no hot running water), a small tea shop, a pachinko parlor, and a few small restaurants. It was 45 minutes by bus to the nearest medium-sized town.

I’d never been to Japan before, and I loved it the minute I arrived. I was twenty-four years old and struggling to transform notebooks filled with fragments of poetry and story ideas into a living breathing novel. My primary job was to interact with Japanese kids, and through them I learned an enormous amount about Japanese culture—the kind that you don’t see in movies or in guidebooks.

I taught classes every morning, which left my afternoons free. I would go up to the library and write longhand in notebooks. Over the course of my first year in Japan, I wrote what would become the pages of my first book Falling Through the Earth. One of the teachers heard that I was interested in learning a martial art, and soon I was studying wa-do, a Japanese martial art in the school dojo every afternoon after school. By the time I left, I’d earned a brown belt. I was learning Japanese calligraphy, Ikebana, Japanese language but more important, I was learning a way of seeing the world that revolved around community, routine, and education. These years were transformative not only because I developed a writing routine, and was adopted into a culture I loved, but because in my second year in Japan, my son Alexander was born. By the time I left Japan, I was a writer and a mother.

I’ve wanted to write about Japan for two decades but couldn’t quite find the right vehicle until The Puzzle Box. I felt that it was the perfect way to incorporate what I’d learned in Japan with a propulsive, panoramic story. It also allowed me to incorporate elements of Japanese culture and history that I’d discovered while living in Japan—Shinto religion, the Onna-Bugeisha female samurai, and the Imperial family’s drama of succession

Who has been the most difficult character for you to write? Why?

Sedge, who is the villain. I think writing a complex villain is really hard.

If you could be one of your characters for a day which character would it be?

Mike Brink, who is the puzzle genius hero of the book. I’m interested to understand exactly how he experiences his ‘gift.’

If you could spend the day with your character, what would you do? What would that day look like?

I’d go with Mike on a walk through central park with his dog Conundrum. Then, we’d go to a pi-counting contest and watch him recite pi places into the tens of thousands.

What’s your take on research and how do you do it?

I do a lot of ‘experiential’ research, meaning I actually go to the place I’m writing about. I spent two weeks in Japan for this novel, and went to every location in the book except for the final one, in Kyushu.

Are there any particular authors that have influenced how you write?

I love books with startling language that have tight plotting. When I pick up a novel, I want to pause to admire the language, and then be pulled back in because of the story. Novelists who do that are rare! But to name a few: Patricia Highsmith, Wilkie Collins, Colette, to name a few dead writers. Contemporary novels I’m reading are: Teddy Wayne’s The Winner, Richard Price’s Lazarus Man, Catherine Steadman’s Look in the Mirror.

Do you have a secret talent readers would be surprised by?

I am a very good knitter! I make my own sweaters.

Your favorite go to drink or food when the world goes crazy!

My last meal would be: Krug champagne and a huge plate of French fries.

What is your writing kryptonite?

I need to be away from the news and social media while I work. I have an app on my computer that keeps me offline while writing.

I do love your cultural experience and how it impacts the book. Thank you so much for joining us today.

Readers, here’s a look at The Puzzle Box which releases today:

It is the Year of the Wood Dragon, and the ingenious Mike Brink has been invited to Tokyo, Japan, to open the legendary Dragon Box.

The box was constructed during one of Japan’s most tumultuous periods, when the samurai class was disbanded and the shogun lost power. In this moment of crisis, Emperor Meiji locked a priceless Imperial secret in the Dragon Box. Only two people knew how to open the box—Meiji and the box’s sadistic constructor—and both died without telling a soul what was inside or how to open it.

Every twelve years since then, in the Year of the Dragon, the Imperial family holds a clandestine contest to open the box. It is devilishly difficult, filled with tricks, booby traps, poisons, and mind-bending twists. Every puzzle master who has attempted to open it has died in the process.

But Brink is not just any puzzle master. He may be the only person alive who can crack it. His determination is matched only by that of two sisters, descendants of an illustrious samurai clan, who will stop at nothing to claim the treasure.

Brink’s quest launches him on a breakneck adventure across Japan, from the Imperial Palace in Tokyo to the pristine forests of Hakone to an ancient cave in Kyushu. In the process, he discovers the power of Meiji’s hidden treasure, and—more crucially—the true nature of his extraordinary talent.

Novel Exposing the Dangers of Deepfakes and Social Media

0

Today’s teenagers have the power to change reality

Attorney and author Felicia Farber’s new young adult novel Fake Out, published by Pyramid Press, on the dangerous ramifications of mixing artificial intelligence (“AI”) with social media has won twenty-five literary awards. Since its May 2024 release, Fake Out racked up first place wins in the 2024 Hollywood Book Festival (Artificial Intelligence), 2024 Beach Book Festival (Young Adult), and Outstanding Creator Awards (Best Mystery, Teen & YA, and Fiction Book of 2024). In addition, the novel placed as first runner-up or finalist in multiple other book award contests in the romance, general fiction, young adult, and suspense categories.

Fake Out shines a spotlight on the complexities of teenagers’ digital lives and the impact of technology on modern romance. One of the ever-present dangers facing today’s adolescents is that the use of AI to create manipulated videos called deepfakes has made it nearly impossible to discern what video footage is real. Exacerbating the problem is the fact that cutting-edge tools that can alter photos and videos—two of our most powerful mediums of communication—are now accessible to the average person.

FAKE OUT

Farber shares her legal expertise on electronic bullying and harassment to make teenagers, parents, and educators aware that generative AI and synthetic media are catapulting our society into a scary new realm where deepfakes can be used as tools for the ultimate cyberbullying. With rapid advancements in technology, our laws are lagging behind and currently fail to adequately protect us from the chaos created by doctored images and manipulated media.

“We are all susceptible to weaponized AI and Fake Out illustrates the catastrophic impact the latest technological advancements can have on teens and people of all ages,” says Farber. “Most deepfakes are of females, but my book shows that males are vulnerable too.”

Fake Out, a stand-alone sequel to the award-winning novel ICE QUEEN about sexting and cyberbullying, has received excellent reviews: “A smart, sexy warning about the dangers of technology for teens and adults alike”-KIRKUS. “Fake Out deserves accolades for advocating digital literacy while examining the often-muddy ethical dimensions of AI technology” – BOOKLIFE.

About the Author: Felicia Farber is an attorney, engineer, and law professor who writes contemporary young adult novels about the impact of technology on today’s teens.

Guest Post: The Making of an Aztec Mythology By Tricia Copeland

The Making of an Aztec Mythology By Tricia Copeland

Mexican American Matt Maes and I met at a networking for creatives online meetup. I was instantly drawn to his creative mission and looked up his work. What I found amazed me. His series of art pieces depicting goddesses resonated with my passion for creating strong female characters. I connected with him, and we met one on one. In our first chat we talked about a collaborative project and decided to meet again. In our second chat Matt suggested producing an illustrated book. This idea excited me, and we began working right away.

He wanted to explore a character that drew from his Mexican heritage and had the name Azreya stuck in his head. After some research, and upon finding that Azreya had Latino roots, I created Azreya’s character and the beginning of her story. Azreya became an Aztec girl born on the eve of the winter solstice. Azreya had golden eyes, a color very odd for an Aztec baby, and a birthmark on her left hand. Her parents believed she was cursed by the god Tepeyollotl, the Aztec Lord of Darkness. Matt read initial drafts of Azreya’s story and helped shape her reactions to the challenges she faced.

Matt and I researched the Aztec culture, religion, language, and society to ensure that the book accurately represented how the Aztecs lived, what they ate, how their society worked, what children did, their government organization, religion, buildings, roads, tools, weapons, and trade practices. We incorporated many words from the Aztec Nahuatl language and included a glossary of Nahuatl terms, as well as a map of the Aztec Empire, in the finished book.

As the story evolved, Matt and I collaborated on which scenes in the book should be illustrated. He initially hand sketched drawings that matched the characteristics of the Aztec people, their dress, weaponry, and style of building. After hand sketching the drawings, he created digital images and added color to the drawings. In addition to serving as illustrations, these drawings helped create covers for the book. For art lovers and budding artists, we included all his initial sketches in the paperback and hardcover versions of the publication.

Azreya, Aztec Priestess earned a 5* rating and Bronze Award from the Readers’ Choice Book Awards in 2022. The reviewer wrote: “Azreya, Aztec Priestess, by author Tricia Copeland is an engrossing chapter book for middle grade readers based on Aztec mysticism and mythology. The book is told from Azreya’s perspective, a young girl born with special gifts and extraordinary powers. The book follows her journey from birth to her teenage years, as she is torn from her family and forced to live with a shaman who exploits her for his own personal gain. It is a journey of courage, self-discovery, and emancipation, as Azreya fights for her life and her people. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and the illustrations by Matt Maes are divine.”

Matt and I have attended several book and art events, reading chapters from Azreya and talking about this special collaboration. We love the book and friendship that grew from its creation. Azreya is a book not only for middle grade readers, but also for young adult and adult readers that love history, mythology, legends, and a little bit of paranormal fantasy as well.

Happy reading,

Here’s a look at Azreya, Aztec Priestess: A Shifter Mythology:

“A young Aztec girl's journey of courage, self-discovery and emancipation. … A fascinating and engaging book about Aztec mythology.” – 5* Readers’ Choice Book Awards

For years, Azreya accepts her place as one cursed by the gods, but with foresight of an impending slaughter, she dares to attempt to reverse the Aztec people’s fate.

At the age of three, Azreya is placed in the care of a shaman, Nukpana, who promises to protect her. Servitude to the man who vowed to keep her dark side from emerging seemed a small price to pay until a special client visits. Azreya’s inner compass clashes with Nukpana’s wishes and her rage boils over.

With the demon just under the surface, she has no choice but to flee, only to find her own family refuses to take her in. Still unable to stand by and witness her people’s demise, Azreya pursues a quest to enlighten them. She faces many challenges—not the least of which is the monster hiding under her own skin.

Can Azreya control her inner beast and convince her people to break from age-old patterns, or will the Aztecs be vanquished by the enemy?

Embrace your inner strength in Azreya, Aztec Priestess!

READING IS FUNDAMENTAL LAUNCHES FOURTH ANNUAL NATIONWIDE READING ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVE “RALLY TO READ 100”

0

Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation’s leading children’s literacy nonprofit, announced today the launch of the fourth annual Rally to Read 100 (RallytoRead.org)—a six-month initiative that runs from October 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025 designed to inspire the joy of reading and motivate children to read, starting with a pledge to read 100 books.

Building on the success of last year’s campaign, in which over 800,000 children participated, RIF will once again unite classrooms and communities across the country with a reading initiative anchored on monthly themes and supported with a diverse lineup of author read-alouds. There will also be a book collection sweepstakes, a variety of engaging reading activities for home and school (some of which are in Spanish), plus a virtual event hosted at the Union Square Barnes & Noble in New York City and live broadcast nationwide to celebrate National Reading Month in March 2025. All of the free read-alouds and literacy activities are available at www.RallytoRead.org.

With 67 percent of fourth graders reading below grade level, according to the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results, RIF is working to reinvigorate reading across our nation’s youth. Reading aloud to children sharpens their listening skills, expands their vocabularies, and nurtures a lifelong love of reading. The 2024-2025 Rally to Read 100 program kicks off with a special welcome video from Suzanne LangNew York Times bestselling author of Grumpy Monkey, and is supported by Inspiration Partners: Barnes & Noble, Macy’s, and the Nellie Mae Education Foundation.

Each month during the six-month campaign, a featured read-aloud will be shared from exclusive publishing partner Penguin Random House as well as specially selected Barnes & Noble Storytime Picks from popular authors and illustrators. For elementary school classrooms and libraries, RIF is bringing back the Rally to Read book sweepstakes, giving away 10,000 new books in which elementary school educators have the chance to win 100 high-quality books donated by Barnes & Noble for their school or youth-serving organization.

“Literacy is essential not only for our students’ academic growth and achievement, but also for expanding our understanding of both the world and ourselves. With Rally to Read, we’re offering exciting ways for children to explore the enriching perspectives that come from enjoying a wide range of stories,” said Alicia Levi, President and CEO of Reading Is Fundamental. “We were thrilled with the response to last year’s initiative, and with the support of our Inspiration partners Barnes & Noble, Macy’s, and the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, along with passionate storytellers and advocates, we are proud to carry on this important mission.”

“Barnes & Noble is thrilled to support Reading Is Fundamental’s Rally to Read campaign for the third year in a row,” said Jackie De Leo, Chief Merchandising Officer, Barnes & Noble. “In bringing educational resources to communities where they are most needed, we hope to ignite a love of literature among the youngest readers; we know this fosters a sense of determination carried throughout the rest of their lives. We are proud to share in both the vision and commitment RIF has towards elevating children’s literacy and can’t wait to see the impact of this year’s campaign in classrooms nationwide.”

“For more than 20 years, Macy’s and Reading Is Fundamental have together created critical access to books for youth in underserved communities, promoting a love of reading for children nationwide,” said Sam Di Scipio, Macy’s, Inc. Senior Director, Social Impact. “Through our purpose platform, Mission Every One, we are proud to partner on initiatives like Rally to Read as we work to empower our future leaders and create a brighter future for all.”
