0

Shelley Grandy’s novel Devious Web—described by Publishers Weekly BookLife Reviews as a “smart mystery of a tech CEO, tangled schemes, and many suspects”—launched into the Canadian thriller/mystery scene today. The bingeworthy suspenseful novel, distributed by publishing powerhouse Simon & Schuster, is set in Toronto’s downtown core and draws on Grandy’s tech industry communications background.

“Grandy convincingly brings life to Toronto’s tech scene and, more crucially, how the minds of its leaders work, clearly reflecting the author’s own experience in the industry,” says Publishers Weekly BookLife Reviews.

Grandy, who began her career as a journalist, is founder of Grandy Public Relations Inc. and has provided PR and communications support to tech sector clients in TorontoWaterloo, Quebec, and the US for over 15 years, including current client EXFO, the communications industry’s test, monitoring, and analytics experts. She was a director of communications at Nortel for many years and subsequently advised numerous companies, from start-ups to Canada’s largest software company, OpenText.

“While the book focuses on the potential acquisition of a data analytics company, the storyline involves much more,” said Grandy. “If you loved Suits and Succession, this book is for you.”

Devious Web’s central character is entrepreneur, Tom Oliver, who is considering selling his data analytics business to a Silicon Valley company when he becomes the target of an unknown perpetrator. Who would want to harm a well-liked CEO at the top of his game and why? Tom’s inner circle comes under scrutiny in a tangled web of intrigue that spans business and family dynamics.

Grandy recommends her book to mystery and suspense novel readers, book clubs, tech sector and US politics enthusiasts, and “anyone who likes books they simply can’t put down”. Devious Web is available from AmazonChapters Indigo, and Barnes and Noble, independent booksellers, and retailers across Canada, the US, and internationally. Devious Web is her debut novel, published by SparkPress.

Booktrailer: The Angel and the Amazing Life of Maggie Love by C.R. Fabis

0

“When I took this assignment, I knew Maggie had killed 20 people. I knew that and little else. Yes, I am an Angel, although we prefer to be called Inspectors simply because that’s what we do. We inspect a recently deceased person’s soul. As I examined her life, some of it began to make sense. But still, how do you justify 20 murders? If you read this journal, you can decide for yourself if her soul should be saved. And I promise you one thing, everything written down here is true.” Inspector Lawrence (Chief Inspector of Souls)

Maggie Love is an enigma.
She has at least 12 aliases. Is Maggie Love even her real name?
She freely admits to murdering people—at least to those who care.
We shouldn’t root for her—but we do. Just like her angel inspector.
Why?

When souls are judged when a person dies, what will it take for one to repent? Colorado author C.R. Fabis weaves a fascinating journey of morality, vigilantism, and the factors that shape one’s life in his second novel, The Angel and the Amazing Life of Maggie Love. When confronted about the dispute, Septimus reveals that he actually wrote the script, but allowed Hughes to claim authorship in return for casting Septimus’s paramour, Flora Campbell, in the lead. Septimus has come to regret the agreement and vows to reclaim authorship, even if it means the play never opens. But, days later, Prudence and Geoffrey are urgently summoned to Septimus’s boarding house, where the thespian lays dying in Lydia’s arms.

Lydia believes her cousin’s death is no accident and wants Hunter and MacKenzie Investigative Law to look into the matter, going so far as to help Prudence and Flora secure employment undercover in the play’s wardrobe department. Elvis Costello and T Bone Burnett are “The Coward Brothers” on Audible

0

Audible today announced The True Story of The Coward Brothers, a three-part scripted Audible Original audio series – referred to by the author as a “wireless drama” – that recounts the history of Henry and Howard Coward, a pair of delightfully deluded pop practitioners and conjurers played by Elvis Costello and T Bone Burnett, premiering Thursday, November 21, exclusively from Audible.

Adding to the lore of these rock and roll charlatans comes an all-new, 20-track album from Costello and Burnett, who first worked together as The Coward Brothers forty years ago, debuting from New West Records alongside the Audible Original on November 21. Ahead of the dual roll out, New West Records will release the first album single, Always, which is also featured in the Audible Original, on Tuesday, October 8. The track will be available on all digital music services.

Audible’s The True Story of The Coward Brothers follows two musical brothers – one English, one American, both the illegitimate sons of dubious parentage who may, as they claim to be, “one and half-brothers” – perhaps a reference to the disparity in their height and relative talents. In this satirical audio series directed by Christopher Guest (This Is Spinal TapBest in Show), Henry and Howard Coward are lightly grilled by radio host, Sterling Lockhart (Harry Shearer) as they bitterly retrace the story of being duped out of their royalties and rightful place in pop history by their cutthroat manager who, among other things, persuaded them to fake their own deaths. Their sometimes poignant and heartrending story reveals an improbable love triangle involving their publisher’s secretary, Phyliss Dandy (Rhea Seehorn), as well as entertaining listeners with tales of their lost music, unsupportable claims of having written titles curiously adjacent to more famous songs, such as “A Lotta Money”, “Tipsy Woman” and their failed attempt at Cold War topicality, “My Baby Just Whistles (Here Come The Missiles)”.

The Audible Original features all-new music from The Coward Brothers and boasts an all-star cast which also includes Edward Hibbert (The PrestigeEarthworm Jim), Stephen Root (BarryOffice Space), and Kathreen Khavari (Avengers AssembleBig Little Lies). The Elvis Costello scripted musical-comedy series will be available exclusively for Audible listeners beginning November 21.

In conjunction with the release of the Audible Original, New West Records will release The Coward Brothers, a self-titled new album from Burnett and Costello – otherwise known as Henry and Howard Coward – inviting listeners to indulge in the musical library, the forgotten hits and demos of the imagined brothers. The album will feature tracks also in the Audible Original including “Pure Bubblegum”, “Like Licorice”, “World Serious”, and more. The Coward Brothers will release on CD, LP, Limited Edition “Licorice Red” vinyl as well as a limited-edition “Pink Bubblegum” variant with Barnes & Noble on November 15. The digital release will be available on iTunes and all streaming services on November 21.

“With regard to the ludicrous assertion that this person, Howard Coward, and I are one and the same, I have to say: this is the work of a bounder, a rounder and a charlatan, and I shall be examining my legal options forthwith,” said Elvis Costello on the Audible Original and album from The Coward Brothers.

When asked about his connection to the musical duo, T Bone Burnett said, “I have a vague recollection of buying a 45 of the song Pure Bubblegum by an act called The Coward Brothers many long years ago. I heard it on a Fort Worth radio station called KXOL, billed as ‘the new music.’ The disc jockey played it once and got such a bad response from listeners that they burned it the next morning in front of the station. What ever happened to those guys – are they still alive?”

The True Story of The Coward Brothers expands Costello’s and Burnett’s Audible catalogues, joining Burnett’s The Confederacy: Truth and Reconciliation and Costello’s How to Play the Guitar and Y, both of which are part of Audible’s Words + Music slate. The upcoming Audible Original also joins an exciting slate of audio-only original comedies including Hot White Heist starring Bowen Yang, Trust Fall starring Colin Jost and Wanda Sykes, Yes We Cannabis starring Sam Richardson and Method Man, and Hit Job starring Keke Palmer and Pete Davidson.

Lisa Marie Presley & Riley Keough’s FROM HERE TO THE GREAT UNKNOWN is Oprah’s Book Club’s October Pick

0

Oprah Winfrey has announced that her latest Oprah’s Book Club pick is FROM HERE TO THE GREAT UNKNOWN (Random House) by Lisa Marie Presley and Riley Keough. The news was announced yesterday on CBS Mornings. A primetime television eventAn Oprah Special: The Presleys – Elvis, Lisa Marie and Riley aired on CBS last night. In the special, Oprah visited Graceland to sit down with Riley Keough for her first in-depth interview since Lisa Marie Presley died unexpectedly in 2023. You can click here to watch the full segment.

“I have great love and admiration for Lisa Marie Presley, and was so moved that her daughter Riley, through her grief, was able to help her finish a beautifully touching memoir that allows us to see her mother at her most honest and vulnerable,” said Oprah Winfrey in a statement to the Associated Press. “This is an intimate look at what it was like growing up as heir to one of America’s most famous families.”

Oprah and Riley. Courtesy of Riley Keough Instagram.

“When Oprah called to tell me that she was selecting my mom’s memoir for her book club, all I could think about was how proud my mom would have been to know her story was going to be read and discussed with such empathy, thought and grace,” said Riley Keough. “She would have felt incredibly vulnerable, but profoundly grateful for the chance to really reach people.”

Lisa Marie Presley, born to an American myth and raised in the wilds of Graceland, tells her whole story for the first time in FROM HERE TO THE GREAT UNKNOWN: a raw, riveting, one-of-a-kind memoir faithfully completed by her daughter, Riley Keough. When Lisa Marie passed away unexpectedly in early 2023, Riley got the tapes that she had recorded for the book, laid in her bed, and listened to story after story about her life: smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about getting dragged screaming out of the bathroom as she ran towards his body on the floor, about motherhood, deep addiction, and ever-present grief. Riley knew she had to fulfill her mother’s wish to reveal these memories, incandescent and painful, to the world. Written in both Lisa Marie’s and Riley’s voices, a mother and daughter communicating—from this world to the one beyond—as they try to heal each other, From Here to the Great Unknown is a book like no other—the last words of the only child of an American icon.

From Here to the Great Unknown: A Memoir [Book]Published in tandem with the hardcover edition, Academy Award-winning actress Julia Roberts narrates the audiobook version of FROM HERE TO THE GREAT UNKNOWN (now available in the PRH Audio app), alongside Riley Keough, who helped complete the book following her mother’s untimely passing. The audiobook also features never-before-heard selections from the personal tapes Presley recorded as she prepared to write the book.

Roberts says, “I was so moved by Lisa Marie’s incredible memoir. It was a real privilege to give voice to her wild and beautiful life, and I deeply appreciate Riley entrusting me with her mother’s story.”

Keough adds, “I’m so thrilled to have Julia be a part of this and read the voice of my mother. I couldn’t think of anyone more perfect to help share her story with the world.”

FROM HERE TO THE GREAT UNKNOWN is out everywhere now, and you can watch the PRH Audio trailer below.
