HOPE THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF POPE FRANCIS THE FIRST MEMOIR WRITTEN BY A SITTING PONTIFF

RANDOM HOUSE CANADA TO PUBLISH HOPE THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF POPE FRANCIS THE FIRST MEMOIR WRITTEN BY A SITTING PONTIFF

Random House Canada, an imprint of Penguin Random House Canada, will publish HOPE, the autobiography of Pope Francis in Canada.

Italian publisher Mondadori made the announcement today at the Frankfurt Book Fair and will manage world rights.

HOPE, which took the Pontiff six years to write, will be published simultaneously worldwide in principal languages and in over 80 countries next January in time for the 2025 Jubilee of Hope. An audiobook edition will be released simultaneously in English by Penguin Random House Audio. The book cover image was also released and can be viewed here.

Written with Carlo Musso, former non-fiction editorial director of Piemme and Sperling & Kupfer, and then founder of the independent publisher Libreria Pienogiorno, in accordance with the wishes of Pope Francis, this unprecedented memoir was originally intended to be published after the Pope’s passing. The announcement of the new Jubilee of Hope in 2025 inspired him to make this legacy available now. “It has been a long, intense adventure that has taken up the past six years: work on writing it began in March 2019 and will be completed in the forthcoming weeks,” Musso commented.

“The book of my life is the story of a journey of hope, a journey that I cannot separate from the journey of my family, of my people, of all God’s people. In every page, in every passage, it is also the book of those who have traveled with me, of those who came before, of those who will follow,” offers Pope Francis. “An autobiography is not our own private story, but rather the baggage we carry with us. And memory is not just what we recall, but what surrounds us. It doesn’t speak only about what has been, but about what will be. It seems like yesterday, and yet it’s tomorrow. All is born to blossom in an eternal springtime. In the end, we will say only: I don’t recall anything in which You are not there.”

With a wealth of revelations and unpublished stories, moving and very human, poignant and dramatic, but also capable of real humour, Francis’s memoir begins in the early years of the twentieth century with the story of his Italian roots and his ancestors’ adventure of emigration to Latin America, moving on to his childhood, adolescence, choice of vocation, adult life, covering the whole of his papacy up to the present day. A text of great narrative force in which the Pope through his autobiographical account addresses candidly, courageously and prophetically some of the most important and controversial questions of our current times, as well as the crucial moments of his service as universal pastor of the Catholic Church.

Destined to fascinate readers throughout the world and to represent a legacy of hope for future generations, HOPE will be enhanced by remarkable photographs, including private and unpublished material made personally available by the Pope.

These are the publishers now involved in the publication: Italy Mondadori, USA Random House, Random House Canada, UK Viking, France Albin Michel, Germany Penguin Random House / Kösel-Verlag, Spain Penguin Random House, Portugal Penguin Random House, Brazil Companhia das letras, Croatia Znanje, Slovakia Ikar, Hungary Kossuth Kiado, Romania Polirom, Greece Gutenberg Dardanos, Korea Catholic Publishing House, Catalonia Penguin Random House / Rosa del vents, Poland Swiat Ksiazki, Lithuania Lithuanian Writers Union.

Random House Canada is the publisher of the finest books by Canadian and international writers, be they new voices or beloved greats. Nonfiction or fiction, these books encompass a dazzling range of prize winners and bestsellers that have delighted, surprised and inspired Canadians, changing the way we think about the most important issues of our time. The Random House Canada list has been recognized with the Scotiabank Giller Prize, Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-Fiction, the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize, the National Business Book Award, the Writers’ Trust Rogers Fiction Award among many, many others.

Writing Creepy Fiction By Thea Lyons

0

I don’t write horror.

I have resolutely said this from the start.

I’m a wuss. Can’t handle gory stuff. Hide behind my fingers watching TV. Sleep with the light on if I’ve been reading something mildly unnerving.

I do write dark fantasy.

With creepy mist that disappears people, a spectre stealing human organs, eyeless corpses, blood magic, and disembodied voices.

Maybe I write some horror elements. But don’t tell anyone.

During editing, my debut novel got a lot darker as I started reading horror books by friends. Reading to give feedback meant I had a layer of separation from the story. It made it more accessible for my anxious brain. I learnt a lot about adding horror elements into my fantasy writing. These are some of the points I found that elevated it from fantasy to dark fantasy with horror elements.

Setting plays a big part. Put your characters somewhere creepy and they’ll start to get twitchy. So will your reader, even if nothing scary is happening. The first book of the Seer of York, The Hiding, starts on the Autumnal Equinox and finishes on Hallowe’en. It’s set in one of the most haunted cities in Britain, where ghost walk tours are advertised on practically every corner and you may well meet a denizen of the past hawking their wares. Every time I travel to York, the surrounding countryside if misty. The buildings and streets are old, wonky, and crowded. It’s probably harder to write York as not-creepy.

Something that’s not quite right. Important as overall atmosphere is, I find it’s the little details that can send chills down my spine. Things that are subtly not right play on the brain and force you to examine the real world around you just in case. It’s something I’ve tried to exploit in my recent short story collection, Reawakening. A mirror reflecting a room with photos that are more yellowed and a carpet that’s more worn. One person mirroring the actions of another perfectly. An innocuous counting song that’s been turned into the basis for murder.

Something previously safe becoming a threat also plays on those same real-life fears. A murder in a church. Home invasion. People disappearing from the local dog-walking park. Make readers question the world around them, things they normally take for granted. We’ve all seen horror based on children’s toys, fairgrounds, or the seaside. Things and places that are supposed to be joyful, treats even, but which might now kill you. When I was six, I had a recurring nightmare that a cannibal clown lived under the doorstep at the entrance to my school cloakroom (no, I had no inadvertently seen It). The memory still gives me the creeps as an adult.

Things not happening. Think of The Shining. I have to admit, I’m too much of a fraidy cat to have read it, so this is based on the film (I’ve heard the book is worse). For a lot of the film, nothing happens. It’s an (almost) empty hotel and endless corridors. But you know something might happen and so the tension increases. Absence of sound is another trigger. It’s so rare in real life that when it happens in a book your ears are straining for what they know is missing. A cessation of birdsong is often used in fiction to indicate a predator nearby.

Utilise character interiority. A great advantage of books over other media is the ability to show character reactions that no one else might notice. Things like a churning stomach, goosebumped skin, aching bones and nerves, and changes in how the character is thinking are harder to show on film. In a book, it can put the reader in the character’s shoes. Putting the reader behind the character’s eyes can also increase mystery. If they don’t know it, we don’t know it. If they think there’s something lurking in the mists, then the reader can’t be sure whether there is or isn’t. The Emotion Thesaurus and similar books can be helpful to get the ball rolling if you’re stuck on how to show something.

Don’t forget your other senses. What can be seen, or even heard, is fairly standard to see in a book, but don’t forget the other senses. Scents are a strong memory trigger, so if your tension is from a traumatic past, scents are a good way to trigger panic. Reaching into the unknown and encountering a slimy or sinuous texture is alarming. The Hallowe’en ‘haunted house’ at my secondary school had one of those blind boxes where you stick your hand in. Even though you know it’s just jelly or something equally innocuous, there’s a stomach clenching moment as your fingers sink into it. I’m arachnophobic, so scurrying feet over skin or sticky webs freak me out when I read them. Taste can be a difficult one, we’re not aware of it all the time, but it plays nicely into interiority. Then there’s that sixth sense, the someone-is-watching-me tingle, the slight precognition we sometimes seem to have. It’s ethereal, and that makes it perfect to exploit in fiction no matter what you believe to be ‘fact’.

This is all general skin-prickling, shoulder blade-itching, feelings disconcerted. What’s different about a fantasy setting that increases the tension. For me, it’s something that the best psychological horror has. Doubt. Are they crazy or is the old woman in the woods a witch? Is it someone gaslighting or is the attic haunted? Are they psychotic or possessed by a demon? Sometimes, the horror is our world and it is all a ruse or derangement. Sometimes, it’s horror with fantasy elements and vampires and ghosts do exist. The lines are blurry. Sometimes, you never know.

In fantasy, as a baseline, anything can be true if you can make it plausible.

There’s a whole range of new societal paranoia to explore (I enjoy delving into this one in my series), different superstitions to exploit, and the possibility of magic, ghosts, deities, and a whole array of supernatural creatures.

Fantasy gives fears reality.

Nowhere near a complete list of making a creepy atmosphere in a book, but hopefully a few things to ponder. Wishing you all a bone-chilling spooky season.

World War II marked a significant turning point in the role of women in the workforce, both in the United States and around the world. Prior to the war, women were largely confined to domestic roles or certain “feminine” occupations such as teaching, nursing, and secretarial work. However, the unprecedented demand for labor during the war, combined with the absence of men who were deployed to fight, created new opportunities for women to enter industries that had been traditionally dominated by men. Yet, this period of female empowerment was short-lived, as the end of the war saw many women pushed out of their jobs to make way for returning soldiers. Since then, women have faced an uphill battle for workplace equality, especially in terms of pay and promotions.

Women’s Entry into the Workforce During WWII

With the onset of World War II, millions of men left their jobs to serve in the military, creating a critical labor shortage in industries essential to the war effort. This included manufacturing, transportation, and agriculture—sectors that had long been male-dominated. The government and private employers launched extensive recruitment campaigns to encourage women to fill these vacancies. One of the most iconic symbols of this effort was “Rosie the Riveter,” the cultural figure representing the capable and patriotic female worker, popularized by the “We Can Do It!” poster. Women were called upon to join the workforce, not just as a matter of necessity but as a demonstration of national loyalty.

Women responded to the call in large numbers. By 1944, over 6 million women had entered the workforce in the United States alone, bringing the total number of working women to nearly 20 million. Many women took on roles in factories, producing munitions, aircraft, and other wartime materials. Women also stepped into clerical, agricultural, and service jobs that had been left vacant by men. For the first time, women were proving that they could excel in jobs traditionally reserved for men, and many discovered a newfound sense of independence and identity through their work.

The Post-War Pushback

However, when World War II ended in 1945, a wave of returning soldiers flooded back into the labor market, and the government and employers encouraged women to return to their traditional domestic roles. The message was clear: men should be prioritized in the workforce, and women were expected to vacate the jobs they had filled during the war. Industries that had previously welcomed women were now reluctant to retain them in significant numbers. Factory jobs were especially targeted for male employment, as the idea of women working in such environments was viewed as temporary and abnormal.

Despite the fact that many women enjoyed their new responsibilities and independence, the post-war era brought widespread dismissals. In some cases, women were outright fired; in others, they were pressured to resign. Women who remained in the workforce were often demoted to lower-paying, less skilled jobs. This process of pushing women out of the workforce was reinforced by cultural narratives that emphasized traditional gender roles. Popular media of the time reinforced the notion that a woman’s primary duty was to her family, and economic and social pressures worked together to reinforce the idea that the “natural” order had been restored.

The Long Struggle for Equal Pay and Opportunities

The end of World War II marked a regression in women’s economic empowerment, but it also planted the seeds for future feminist movements. While many women were displaced from the workforce, others continued working out of necessity or choice, and their presence in the labor market became more normalized in the post-war years. However, the fight for workplace equality—especially equal pay and promotions—has been an enduring struggle ever since.

In the decades following the war, women consistently earned lower wages than men for doing the same work. The gender pay gap was pervasive across industries and job categories, with women earning only a fraction of what their male counterparts were paid. This disparity was justified by societal assumptions that men were the primary breadwinners, while women were viewed as earning “supplementary” income. Furthermore, the types of jobs available to women were often lower-paying and offered limited opportunities for advancement.

The fight for equal pay became a central issue in the feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s. With the rise of second-wave feminism, activists began advocating for legislative and social changes that would help women achieve workplace equality. One of the most significant legislative milestones was the passage of the Equal Pay Act of 1963, which made it illegal to pay women less than men for the same work. However, the implementation of this law has been uneven, and the gender pay gap persists today, although it has narrowed.

In addition to pay disparities, women have faced barriers to promotions and leadership positions. After World War II, women were often funneled into clerical or support roles, even if they had the skills and qualifications to take on leadership responsibilities. The “glass ceiling” phenomenon—where women face invisible barriers to advancement—has been a persistent problem in many industries. Even today, women are underrepresented in executive and managerial positions, particularly in traditionally male-dominated fields like finance, technology, and manufacturing.

The Continuing Gender Pay Gap

Despite decades of activism and legal reforms, the gender pay gap remains a pressing issue in the workforce. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, women earned about 82 cents for every dollar earned by men in 2022, with the gap even wider for women of color. Various factors contribute to this disparity, including occupational segregation (where women are concentrated in lower-paying fields), the motherhood penalty (where women’s earnings decrease after they have children), and discrimination.

Conclusion

The story of women in the workforce during and after World War II is one of both triumph and struggle. While the war opened the door to new opportunities and challenged traditional gender roles, the post-war era saw a backlash that pushed many women out of the workforce. Since then, women have fought tirelessly for equality in pay and promotions, but the journey has been long and fraught with challenges. Though progress has been made, the gender pay gap and barriers to advancement remain persistent issues that continue to shape the economic realities of women today. The lessons of World War II remind us that while progress can be made, it is often hard-won and must be continually defended. Women’s contributions to the workforce are indispensable, and the fight for workplace equality is far from over.

Atlas Comics Relaunches on its 50th Anniversary at New York Comic Con

0

Steven Paul’s SP Media Group announced today that it will relaunch Atlas Comics, a legacy comic book publisher founded by Martin Goodman (who also founded Marvel Comics), at New York Comic Con (NYCC) on the 50th anniversary of its original debut. The new title of the brand will be Atlas/Seaboard, and as part of the relaunch, it has entered an exclusive partnership with Walmart to distribute classic merchandise of the Atlas comic book characters. Atlas/Seaboard has also developed a line of collectible action figures with Mego Toys, a line of apparel with Mad Engine, and is in development with Paramount Pictures for a live-action film.

The relaunch of Atlas Comics is being led by Steven Paul, entertainment industry veteran and chairman of SP Media Group/Atlas Comics. A first look at the new collectibles made available by Walmart will be featured at a 1,200-square-foot booth on the main strip of NYCC, showcasing Atlas/Seaboard’s relaunch. It will include giveaways, reprinted comic issues, and limited-edition clothing based on its most popular creative assets.

“Walmart is excited to further enhance collectibles experiences in stores and online, connecting the comic book community with exclusive merchandise inspired by dynamic Atlas character designs for fans to fall in love with all over again,” said Frank Barbieri, vice president of content and digital at Walmart.

Helping lead the relaunch is Scott Karol, President of SP Media Group/Atlas Comics which is headquartered on the Paramount Pictures lot in Hollywood. Other key partners include Jason Goodman, publisher and grandson of Martin Goodman, and Jeff Rovin, Atlas/Seaboard’s former editor-in-chief and writer of the best-selling Tom Clancy’s Op-Center novels. Rovin and Goodman will be present to sign giveaway merchandise alongside Mego Toys president Marty Abrams, award-winning comic writer and artist Larry Hama, and Atlas/Seaboard’s assistant editor and writer Ric Meyers.

“Atlas/Seaboard has a treasure trove of fascinating characters and a deep history in the comic book world that we’re beyond excited to resurface,” said Paul. “The chance to carry on Martin Goodman’s legacy and share this experience at New York Comic Con is an honor for us all as we begin to inject our titles with new life for modern audiences.”

One of Atlas/Seaboard’s most popular characters, Devilina, will be reprised in a live-action film that is in development with Paramount Pictures, drawing from the original story about the sister of Satan who must confront her demonic powers and banish her brother back to hell. In addition to Devilina, Atlas/Seaboard plans to leverage its unique legacy to renew other key titles, including PhoenixGrim Ghost, and Hands of the Dragon as the brand sets the stage for a new wave of creativity for the industry.

“The dynamic characters and world-building behind Atlas/Seaboard dates back to the golden age of comics, crafted by some of the greatest creators of all time,” said Goodman. “We aim to honor their legacy and my grandfather’s vision to build a powerhouse source of content and innovation.”

“Having been an editor for major comic book publishers, it’s safe to say that it’s an absolute honor and thrilling moment to reintroduce Atlas/Seaboard to the world and to share this moment with fans at Comic-Con,” added Rovin. “The possibilities of what’s next for Atlas/Seaboard is exhilarating and something that I’ll be extremely proud to watch flourish for years to come.”
