Jim Fusilli Returns With THE PRICE YOU PAY

0

New Crime Thriller Based on Experiences in the 1970s as a Teamster in a Notorious Local

A crime thriller, coming-of-age story and a family saga, THE PRICE YOU PAY is set in the mid-1970s in crumbling Jersey City, where violence and coercion reign. Young Mickey Wright is thrust into a world controlled by a powerful Teamster local. The man who put him in jeopardy: his father, a renegade policeman well-known to Jersey City’s politicians and drug dealers. When a Black trucker is murdered, Mickey must choose between loyalty to his father or to values he shares with Debbie Olsen, the love of his young life who is the daughter of a stable, solidly middle-class family.

The question of whether Mickey can stand tall, break free and live a worthy life of his choosing is answered in a final, shocking confrontation.

In college, Fusilli was a member of Teamsters Local 560 whose president, Anthony Provenzano, a capo in the Genovese crime family, was convicted of racketeering, extortion and murder. Fusilli uses the local’s criminality and the shady political machine as a springboard for his vividly told fiction that’s by turns terrifying and tender.

THE PRICE YOU PAY is Fusilli’s tenth novel, but his first available in print in bookstores as well as via online retailers in 15 years. In the interim, Fusilli published four novels with Thomas & Mercer and with Audible, including NARROWS GATE — “ranked among the half-dozen most memorable novels about the Mob” by Mystery Scene magazine — and its sequel THE MAYOR OF POLK STREET. Well known as the Wall Street Journal’s Rock & Pop Critic, Fusilli is the author of the “Pet Sounds” entry in Bloomsbury’s 33 1/3 series. In 2023, he edited BRUTAL & STRANGE: STORIES INSPIRED BY THE SONGS OF ELVIS COSTELLO.

Said author and screenwriter Peter Blauner, “THE PRICE YOU PAY is everything you want crime fiction to be: taut, seriously suspenseful, closely observed, wry, and knowing about the way the real world works.”

Added Meg Gardiner, “With THE PRICE YOU PAY, Fusilli gives us a tough and heartfelt coming of age crime story—gritty, suspenseful, involving. The characters pop and ache and burn.”

THE PRICE YOU PAY is available everywhere books are sold. Visit jimfusilli.com for additional information.

The Hunger Games has enthralled millions of readers in its examination of the price of war, human nature, and the powerful force of both love and resistance. Now it appears for the first time in a deluxe illustrated edition, with spellbinding art from internationally acclaimed artist Nico Delort
ABOUT SUZANNE COLLINS AND THE HUNGER GAMES
Bestseling author Suzanne Collins first made her mark in children’s literature with the New York Times bestselling Underland Chronicles fantasy series for middle grade readers. She continued to explore the effects of war and violence on those coming of age with The Hunger Games Series. The Hunger Games (2008) was an instant bestseller, appealing to both teen readers and adults. It was called “addictive” by Stephen King in Entertainment Weekly, and “brilliantly plotted and perfectly paced” by John Green in the New York Times Book Review. The book appeared on the New York Times bestseller list for more than 260 consecutive weeks (more than five consecutive years), and there are more than 100 million copies of all four books in the series—The Hunger Games, Catching Fire (2009), Mockingjay (2010), and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2020)—in print and digital formats worldwide. Foreign publishing rights for The Hunger Games Series have been sold in 54 languages to 52 territories to date. In 2012, Lionsgate launched the first of five films based on the novels. To date, the franchise has earned more than $3.3 billion at the worldwide box office. The most recent film, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, debuted at #1 worldwide on November 17, 2023, and has since taken in over $330 million worldwide.
In 2010 Suzanne Collins was named to the TIME 100 list as well as the Entertainment Weekly Entertainers of the Year list; in 2011 Fast Company named her to their 100 Most Creative People in Business; and in 2016 she was presented the 2016 Authors Guild Award for Distinguished Service to the Literary Community for exemplifying the unique power of young people’s literature to change lives and to create lifelong book lovers. It was the first time the Guild presented its annual award to a YA author. The Atlantic called Hunger Games heroine Katniss Everdeen, “the most important female character in recent pop culture history,” and TIME Magazine named Katniss to its list of “The 100 Most influential People Who Never Lived.” On The Hunger Games trilogy, The New York Times Book Review wrote, “At its best the trilogy channels the political passion of 1984, the memorable violence of A Clockwork Orange, the imaginative ambience of The Chronicles of Narnia and the detailed inventiveness of Harry Potter.” For more information about The Hunger Games, visit http://mediaroom.scholastic.com/hungergames.

Elmer McCurdy was an ambitious, turn-of-the-20th-century outlaw whose death at the hands of a Western posse ended a life of failed crime and alcoholism and began a brilliant career as a mummified side-show attraction that travelled the USA for decades. By the time this journey ended, his name had been forgotten and his desiccated body was hanging in a house-of-horrors ride at an amusement park in Southern California, spray-painted a day-glo orange. Then one day, a grip for the “Six-Million Dollar Man” TV show jostled what he thought was “just a dummy” and an arm fell off, revealing a human bone and beginning a hunt for the origins of this enigma.

David Yazbek, haunted by this true story for thirty years, told his friend and bandmate Erik Della Penna the story, and as the two of them discussed why this tale of money, ambition, fame, memory and death was so compelling, they started writing songs for a stage-piece based on this odd life and these universal yet somehow very American themes. Realizing they were onto something as unique and challenging as anything they’d heard or written before, they approached Yazbek’s The Band’s Visit collaborators Itamar Moses and David Cromer, who quickly became haunted and charmed by Elmer’s story. You will too.

Welcome to the wild, WILD West! Spurs Jackson and his Space Vigilantes bravely defended the frontier against commies from Mars, Venusian spies, Meteor Men, moon bats, and of course, Hitler and his space Nazis. Oh, and dinosaurs! With stories by Walter Gibson, famed creator/writer of The Shadow pulps, and art by John Belfi, Stan Campbell, and Lou Morales, Space Western Comics was one of the weirdest, most fun comic series of the ’50s. Now, all the space western tales are collected and restored in this volume, including a “lost” story. This edition includes an illustrated intro, including revelations about the strange parallels between Star Trek and Space Western Comics by multiple-Eisner Award-winning designer and comics historian Craig Yoe. To Arizona…and beyond!

Craig Yoe opines, “these bat-poop crazy stories are a devoted cult fave series. Make that ‘moon bat-poop crazy’ stories.”

Fun fact, Psychiatric Dr. Fredric Wertham, in his book Seduction of the Innocent, reported that Space Western was a favorite comic book of a juvenile delinquent arsonist that was treated at his clinic. (The lawyers made us put this in: DON’T READ SPACE WESTERN COMICS AND PLAY WITH MATCHES!)

Book Review: “The 6:20 Man” by David Baldacci

The 6:20 Man by David Baldacci

Travis Devine is an ex-Army Ranger, current MBA graduate, and is now working as an intern at a large financial firm in mid-town Manhattan: Cowl and Comely.

Living in the burbs, Travis boards the 6:20 train every morning (including Saturdays) on his way to a job he is hating more and more everyday.

About 15 minutes into the train ride, the train has to stop on the tracks for a few minutes.

Luckily, for those who care onboard the train, the stoppage occurs with a great view of a posh mansion with a pool, and a stunningly beautiful woman swimming or sun bathing (sometimes naked) in plain view of the passengers.

With the best part of his day finished, the train continues to Manhattan and the drudgery.

One morning Travis gets a mysterious email informing him that, one time girlfriend, Sara Ewes is hanging in a closet on the 52nd floor!

Suicide.

WTF!!!

What Travis does not know is how many murders will follow, the danger he will encounter, and how his life (assuming he lives) will change….forever!

To find out what happens, you can read this book!

“The 6:20 Man” is a fast action-packed, at times confusing, murder mystery with twists and turns galore! The ending will shock you!

It is not Baldacci’s best, but, is still a thrilling read with a death count rivaling that of R.R. 🙂
