Sneak Peek: The Divine Proverb of Streusel by Sara Brunsvold

The Divine Proverb of Streusel by Sara Brunsvold

After a strong debut, Sara Brunsvold’s sophomore novel shares more of the deep emotional exploration that she excels at. In The Divine Proverb of Streusel, one woman’s personal journey toward healing is helped by a small-town community and the recipes and proverbs she finds among her late grandmother’s belongings. What results is a touching story of faith, family, and forgiveness that readers will truly savor.

Nikki Werner’s ideals about love have been shaken after her parents’ divorce and her own strained relationship with her boyfriend. She seeks solace from her troubles on her uncle’s small Missouri farm. A summer tucked away will do her heart good, and she can hopefully recover enough to get her future back on track. But can she plan her future when key parts of her past remain unresolved?

While sorting through her late grandmother’s belongings, Nikki stumbles across a notebook full of handwritten German recipes and quotes from the book of Proverbs. As part of her self-discovery journey, Nikki sets out to make the recipes and uses them to connect with others and the heritage she hardly knows. She invites those from her uncle’s community to dine with her and to share their stories about the town that her extended family has been part of for generations. What they have to say brings her heritage to life—and clicks into place pieces of her family history she didn’t know she needed. While Nikki had planned to simply soothe herself through cooking, her project takes on greater meaning. She finds that, with a strength inspired by her ancestors, she can heal the wounds of the past—including those related to her estranged father.

These are sure to make unique gifts for the horror fans in your life!

Linghun by Ai Jiang

Link: https://bookshop.org/p/books/linghun-ai-jiang/19876482?ean=9781958598023

The Legend of Charlie Fish by Josh Rountree

Link: https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-legend-of-charlie-fish/18852869?ean=9781616963941

For those interested in a blend of western history and horror, this novel weaves lyrical prose with a sense of foreboding in a charming monster tale. (And if the “weird west” genre intrigues, you can read more of my recommendations at www.WeirdWestFiction.)

Two for one bonus!

I love short fiction, so these two dark and feminist-themed horror collections were high on my list of favorites this year.

White Trash and Recycled Nightmares by Rebecca Rowland

Link: https://bookshop.org/p/books/white-trash-and-recycled-nightmares-rebecca-rowland/19731048?ean=9781639511204

These short stories feature complex characters in deliciously disturbing scenarios with twists reminiscent of Tales from the Crypt—but so much more unsettling.

Writing Violence III: Getting Hit and Hitting by Mark MacYoung

Why do humans hit each other? Are we programmed to attack each other ineffectively for social reasons? How do we lose power when we strike? How can your character minimize the damage of being struck? How do you write convincing fight scenes? What does a character have to do to injure another character with bare hands? It’s not through striking. Strikes are a very specific form of violence. A form that your readers are knowledgeable about. A form that you’ll destroy your reader’s suspension of disbelief if you don’t get right.

The Writing Violence series is designed to help authors create stronger action scenes by providing them with a fundamental understanding of how violence actually works. These guides give them tools to give their writing staggering believability. As truth is often stranger than fiction, a working knowledge of violence frees writers to create a broader range of exciting action scenes.

CULT HORROR COMES TO OHIO IN MATTHEW ERMAN AND SAM BECK’S “LOVING, OHIO”

0
A beautifully melancholic graphic novel from the award-winning artist of Renegade Rule!

Dark Horse Books presents Loving, Ohio, a coming-of-age graphic novel written by Matthew Erman (Good LuckWitchbloodLong Lost) and illustrated by Sam Beck (VerseRenegade Rule).

After the mysterious suicide of their friend, Sloane, Elliott, Cameron, and Ana are just trying to get through the rest of high school in Loving, Ohio–a town built around The Chorus, a new-age cult that has infiltrated every structure of Loving.

As the group of friends deals with their grief, a series of murders throws them into a mystery connected to everything around them. Sloane and her friends have to escape a roaming murderer, figure out their place in the world, and deal with loss, all in the looming shadow of The Chorus. But through it all, they will find the cost of friendship and the adulthood they seek.

Loving, Ohio is the best piece of fiction I’ve written so far in my life,” said Erman. “I grew up in a cult, as many people do and Loving, Ohio says everything I want to say on the matter. I am immensely proud of it and so grateful for Sam and the gorgeous book she created with me. I can’t wait for you to read this because I think you all are going to be wowed by what we’ve made. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Loving, Ohio is recommended for fans of Courtney Summer’s The Project and Daria Polatin’s Devil in Ohio and is already getting advanced praise:

Loving, Ohio creates a haunting, gorgeous seam in reality and opens it wide to reveal a story that feels all too real. This book is a best-of-the-year with a bullet.”—Sarah Gailey (Just Like HomeEat the RichKnow Your Station)

“A gorgeous small-town nightmare where teenage grief walks hand-in-hand with cosmic horror, and the only way forward is to. Get out, get out of this town. By any means necessary.”—Trevor Henderson (Scarewaves, creator of Siren Head)

“A coming-of-age story that blurs the line between reality and the supernatural. Erman and Beck pit a group of teens against the nightmare of pseudo religious jargon, a knife wielding arsonist, and growing up. Hertfelt and unsettling. One of the best books of 2024.”—Mark Bouchard (It Took Luke)

Loving, Ohio TPB, 216 pages, will be released in bookstores on August 6, 2024 and in comic shops on August 7, 2024. It is now available to pre-order for $19.99 at AmazonBarnes & Noble, and your local comic shop and bookstore.

Be sure to follow Dark Horse Comics on social media and check our website, www.darkhorse.com, for more news, announcements, and updates!

Praise for Matthew Erman and Sam Beck:

“There is simply nothing like Good Luck. It has a truly original premise, an irresistibly endearing protagonist, and satisfying surprises at every corner. An absolute delight.”– The Brazen Bull

Long Lost #1 is a tale spun from subtlety that gives life to the uneasiness you feel when you’re home alone. If the following installments are half as good, Long Lost will serve as a reference text for students of unrest for years to come.”–Comicsverse, Mark Bouchard (It Took Luke, Leaf Peepers)

Verse‘s rich drawings and colours beautifully illustrate a complicated, engaging fantasy world filled with sympathetic characters. I can’t wait to learn more about them as their journey continues!”–Faith Erin Hicks (Hockey Girl Loves Drama BoyAvatar: The Last Airbender)

Verse is the sort of book you spend hours poring over, even after the first read. Every single page is a visual delight–I lingered on every panel and relished every page-turn. Sam expertly crafts a sprawling world full of gripping characters and thrilling stakes that transported me to another dimension–it’s the kind of book I would have devoured as a teenager, and certainly still love now.”–Hannah Templer (Cosmoknights)

“Boys in the Barracks” Provides a Candid Look at Army Culture; First Step in Understanding Those Who Serve

0

Today, Barracks Publishing LLC announced the release of its new publication, “Boys in the Barracks.” The first of its kind, the new non-fiction book goes beyond traditional narratives about the military, providing an unfiltered look at Army life in garrison from the perspective of the soldier. It describes the mundane and exhilarating, the serious and humorous day-to-day realities of soldiers when they are not at war yet preparing for the next war. “Boys in the Barracks” is already a #1 Amazon Bestseller in the Military Life & Institutions History category. Proceeds from the sale go to support Cohen Veterans Network (CVN), a national not-for-profit network of mental health clinics for post-9/11 veterans, service members and their families.

Hundreds of active duty soldiers were interviewed for the book which delves into a wide range of topics including Army leadership, discipline, language, humor, physical fitness, and mental health. It explores the unique culture of the Army, providing insight into its traditions, customs, and unspoken rules. With less than 7% of adult Americans having ever served in the military, the authors emphasize that understanding the culture of the Army is the first step in understanding those who serve, regardless of the era or conflict. The book addresses critical questions about the impact of military service on soldiers’ lives and how these experiences shape their transition back to civilian life.

The release of “Boys in the Barracks” comes as the U.S. Army has struggled to meet its recruitment goals in recent years. In 2023, the Army fell significantly short of its target of 65,000 new recruits, having signed 55,000 contracts.

“In this book, we give voice to the many soldiers whose stories go unheard outside of the barracks and the motor pool,” says co-author Dr. Anthony Hassan, President and CEO of Cohen Veterans Network. “We explore the diverse factors that drive soldiers to enlist and what influences their decisions to remain committed.”

The book bares significance not only for Army leadership looking to spur recruitment and enhance combat readiness but also for recruits, providing an unvarnished look at the realities of the life they’re stepping into. Written with compassion for those who serve and respect for the institution of the military, “Boys in the Barracks” additionally appeals to veterans, spouses, academics, scientists, policy makers and veteran support organizations.

“We present an honest and uncensored portrayal of soldiers’ daily lives to allow for better understanding of their experiences and challenges,” says co-author Professor Carl Castro, Director of Military and Veteran Programs at the Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work at the University of Southern California. “With a candid glimpse into Army culture, this book provides insights for military leaders to optimize the potential of every solider, helping to improve their overall experience and ensure that they are strong advocates for the Army and what it means to serve.”

The authors also drew from personal experience, both having served in the military. Dr. Hassan enlisted in the Army as a radio operator in 1980. In 1995, he transitioned to the Air Force as a military social worker where he participated in peacekeeping operations in Saudi Arabia and East Africa and as combat stress control officer during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Professor Castro joined the Army as an infantryman at the height of the Cold War and later through the support of the Army obtained his PhD. During his service, he participated in numerous peacekeeping and combat campaigns. He retired in the rank of colonel.

Building on the excitement around the launch of the book, Barracks Publishing additionally introduced an initial collection of “Boys in the Barracks” merchandise, such as the “Army Talk Spoken Here” phone case and “Standby to Standby” sweatshirt.

Visit boysinthebarracks.com for more information on the book, the authors and merchandise.
