Amazon: eBook Rentals?

The newest service that might be offered to customers from Amazon is an eBook rental service. According to recent press releases the service would be similar to Netflix — customers would subscribe and the subscription would enable readers to “rent” eBooks.

This service would likely be part of their existing Amazon Prime service and looks to be a service that will be offered with the introduction of their new “tablet” later this year.

There has been little word from publishers regarding this type of service, although a publishing executive was quoted as saying; “What it would do is downgrade the value of the book business.”
