Reader’s Entertainment Radio Presents: Nancy Spiller

Compromise Cake: Lessons Learned From My Mother’s Recipe Box is a memoir-ish collection of food-centric personal essays by author Nancy Spiller.

Mixing food, feelings and reflections Nancy talks about our culture’s love affair with food, her mother’s difficult journey with depression and how food can help bring traditions back into our lives.

Think for just a moment about your favorite dish that only your mother or grandmother, or some special person, makes. You think about how wonderful it tastes, about when you last ate it. You think about the person who made it for you, what are they like?

There’s something about food that taps into memories, and maybe, just a bit, into our souls.

For me it’s my Grandma’s Mississippi Mud Cake with chocolate and marshmallow made every Thanksgiving. Or my mother’s Chicken Tortilla Soup that is probably my favorite soup in the world, but only when SHE makes it.

Thanksgiving is around the corner and many of us are pulling out the old recipe cards and gearing up for the feast.

So while we sit back and think of those wonderful dishes, favorite foods and fond memories we’re going to enjoy discussing these things with the author of Compromise Cake: Lessons Learned From My Mother’s Recipe Box. This is a memoir-ish collection of food-centric personal essays.

And here to talk about her book is author Nancy Spiller.
