Applications Open for Kundiman’s Fall Workshop Sponsored by Penguin Random House

Penguin Random House’s ongoing support of the AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) community includes a partnership with the non-profit writing organization Kundiman, and sponsorship of an eight-week nonfiction workshop taught by writer and cultural activist Bushra Rehman.

The Two Truths and a Lie: Writing Memoir and Autobiographical Fiction workshop will give twelve AAPI writers the opportunity to attend free of charge. The workshop will take place every Monday, beginning October 18, concluding on December 6.

Applications for Asian American writers are open now through September 6. This workshop will explore memory and its gaps, as well as the truth and lies of our lives. Participants will explore a variety of techniques to overcome writing blocks and generate new material. Everyone will also have the chance to workshop a longer piece of writing. Together, they will celebrate and honor their personal stories as they transform their understanding of their memories through their writing. This workshop is exclusively for Asian American writers, and students must be able to attend all eight sessions. The selected participants will be notified by October 5.

Kundiman is also offering additional classes. This September, writers can join a workshop on the poetic turn with Matthew Olzmann, a fiction craft class on empathy with Meng Jin, and a poetry craft class on love and politics with Chen Chen. In October, study poetry from the margins with Arhm Choi Wild, creative nonfiction from an intersectional perspective with Meredith Talusen, and a nonfiction course on women and memoir led by Jen Lue. Full descriptions of each class are on Kundiman’s online classes page.

You can also catch Kundiman at this year’s Brooklyn Book Festival, September 26 – October 4, a celebration of literature, with their friends from The Rumpus, No Tokens, and Books Are Magic. Rohan ChhetriPik-Shuen FungAaliyah DanielsRobin GowTerese Mailhot, and Myriam Gurba will all be reading at this event.
