ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Kalee Boisvert has been in the financial industry for over 15 years, but her love of money started very young. Growing up in a single parent household, she watched her mom struggle with finances and wished there was something she could do to help. Around this time, she realized she needed to find her own way to save and earn if she wasn’t going to allow her circumstances to define her. And so, her own journey to financial literacy began.

Today, as a single mom and financially independent woman, Kalee is called to support women in their financial lives. She felt the pull toward a career that would allow her to pursue this deeply personal goal to advocate for women and their money, which led her on the path to becoming a financial advisor. Being an advisor allows her to work directly with women to empower and support them and help put an end to any money-related stress and doubts.

To further her efforts supporting financial literacy, Kalee has two books being released in 2023 – a children’s picture book called MoneyWise Mabel’s Bursting Bank, and a non-fiction book called Make Money Your Thing! Which aims to build confidence and empower people in their financial lives.

Guest Post: The Magic of the Feng Shui Bagua By Julie Ann Segal

Have you discovered the Feng Shui Bagua and its positive influence on your life? If you’re wanting to improve any aspect of your life, Feng Shui offers a plethora of ways to work with the energy in your space.

The Bagua, below, is a mapping/grid laid over the blueprint of your home or office building, to identify where the nine areas of energy of the building are. Proper use of it creates flow, peace, joy, love, and abundance in your personal life.

Feng Shui Bagua Map

The nine areas of energy are: Abundance and Prosperity; Fame and Reputation; Love, Relationships, Marriage, and Partnerships; Family; Health; Children and Creativity; Wisdom, Knowledge, and Skills; Career and Life Path; and Helpful People and Travel.

The Bagua can be laid out over apartments, houses, or office spaces, as well as a single room, or your yard, art table, or even a desk. This article will focus on your current or potential residential or professional building. If your home or office is more than one level, lay the Bagua map over the main level.

When you’re looking to move into a new building, knowledge of the Bagua can support you in pre-selecting the one that has the more advantageously placed, sized, or structured room for the aspect of your life you’re trying to improve.

For example, if you’re searching for a home with your new partner or spouse, one of your top priorities might be a space that provides a feeling of connection, comfort, love, or inspiration. With this in mind, the Bagua area of Love, Relationships, Marriage, and Partnerships would need to be thoughtfully placed, emphasized, spacious, and designed in ways that would contribute a strong foundation for your new life together.

You may be considering expanding your family and wanting to feel stable and financially secure. So, when searching for a new place to move, you would want the Bagua Wealth area to feel strong, protected, and solid and be well placed. Likewise, the Bagua areas of Family and Children and Creativity would need to feel like a centrally located hub of the home.

If you’re looking to enhance your already existing home, office, or space, there are many Feng Shui tools to implement or adjust, to energize or calm the space. We’ll offer a couple of them here.

First, I want to mention an element of the Feng Shui Bagua that is considered a blessing and bringer of luck or fortune to an aspect of your life. An Extension is an attached garage, sunroom, or den, as well as any room of the house that is an add-on, or that extends past the main square or rectangular shape of the home. An extension expands the energy of the room it is attached to. So, if you have an extension located next to the Bagua area, Helpful People and Travel, you might experience more assistance, guidance, or abundance from others, or opportunities or enrichment in getaways and explorative travel.

As extensions are additions to the main square or rectangular frame of the bagua and add energy and blessings, missing rooms or spaces of the bagua detract from the energy and abundance of the aspect represented in the Bagua. These are called Missing Pieces.

Fortunately, Feng Shui is about working with energy, and energy can always be directed and moved. There are many ways to correct the imbalance of a Missing Piece. One method is to put a mirror reflecting onto the missing area, even if the mirror is a small one tucked behind a painting. It is the energy of the mirror, along with your intention, that activates the balancing. Another way to fill the missing piece is by placing a piece of sculpture, nature element, or furniture in the outdoor space of the missing piece, to create the continual flow of energy.

With a basic understanding of the placement, size, structure of each area of your space as it relates to the Bagua, you can begin designing it with arrangement, color, and pieces. One way we do this is by using paint, furniture, art, accessories, or other piece associated with the Bagua area you are working on.

Each area of the bagua is associated with a different color and element. Abundance and Prosperity are associated with the color purple and the element wood. The Fame and Reputation area is associated with the color red/orange and the element fire. Love, Relationships, Marriage, and Partnerships are connected to the color pink and the element Earth. The Family area is connected with the color green and the element wood. Health is represented by the color yellow/earth tones and the element Earth. Children and Creativity are represented by the color white/pastels and the element metal. The Wisdom, Knowledge, and Skills area is associated with the color blue and the element Earth. Career and Life Path are associated with the color black and the element water. Lastly, Helpful people and Travel are represented by the color gray and the element metal.

There are many resources and nuances in Feng Shui energy design, so when first starting, work with one area at a time. Choose the area that has the aspect of your life you’re wanting most to enhance, expand, or accelerate. If the most challenging aspect of your life is your health and body, focus on the Health area of your space.

With that said, you don’t need to have all the elements and design components of an area completed before moving to another. You might want to do a general design with artwork first, or furniture arrangement, or mirror, paint, or main focal piece, before moving to the next area. This also helps you maintain a holistic feel of wholeness and flow as you walk from one room to another.

Keep in mind that your intention and intuition are just as important, if not more important than, the concepts, tools, and rules of Feng Shui Bagua. If you are desiring peace and clarity and serenity, feel into what that calls to you, as far as color and placement of items within your space. You are the one living, working, playing, or creating there. If you aren’t able to relax or focus or feel supported, change it. If you are experiencing confusion, or sleeplessness, or fatigue, walk into each area, stand still, and feel what your mind, body, and heart are feeling in it. Sometimes it only takes a minor adjustment, like moving the bed to another part of the room, or adding a pop of color, or removing something that is causing you agitation. Try one small change at a time. Like your house or office, and like the Bagua, you have an inner energetic blueprint. Your decisions and design should reflect who you are, your heart and creativity, and what makes you feel good and inspired.

There are many more levels and layers than mentioned here. Don’t hesitate to ask for help or guidance. Using the Bagua Feng Shui design is an art, a science, and a spirit, not to be underestimated. You will notice fairly soon the subtle and powerful shifts in the way you feel and the way your life unfolds under the magical influence of your Feng Shui Bagua.

To learn more on how to lay out the Bagua in your own space and make changes in your life, read Chapter 8 in my book, Change Your Space to Change Your Life.

NEW FOES IN A NEW LAND—THE WITCHER RETURNS IN THE WITCHER: WILD ANIMALS

0
There are two things Geralt can count on: a job will always turn bloody, and people are never what they seem.
In close collaboration with CD Projekt Red, Dark Horse Comics continues to explore the world of The Witcher in a brand new comic series, The Witcher: Wild Animals. The four-issue miniseries is written by Bartosz Sztybor (The Witcher: Fading Memories, Cyberpunk 2077: You Have My Word) and introduces Ukrainian artist Nataliia Rerekina (Moonchosen), Silver Award-winner of the Japan-International Manga Award, in their U.S. comics debut. Colorist Patricio Delpeche (The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country) and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (The Unlikely Story of Felix and Macabber, All Eight Eyes) complete the series team, with variant cover offerings for issue #1 from acclaimed artists Manuele Fior (Hypericon, Sara Kipin (Poison Ivy: Thorns), and Matt Smith (Hellboy: The Bones of Giants).

Fan-favorite witcher Geralt is no stranger to jobs gone wrong, but washing ashore on a strange new land forces him into a conflict between the hunters who took him in and a mysterious clan known to kill humans. Where man and creatures coexist, there is an unspoken rule—one where the skills of a witcher go beyond killing monsters.

Enjoy a classic witcher adventure with monsters, grim musings, and carnage as The Witcher: Wild Animals takes readers to new places with unfamiliar faces in a story based on the hit games by CD Projekt Red!

The Witcher: Wild Animals #1 (of 4) will be in comic shops on September 20, 2023. It is available for pre-order now at your local comic shop for $3.99.

Praise for The Witcher The Ballad of Two Wolves:

“Feels like a side quest right out of the games, and I mean with the highest praise I can offer.”—Comic Crusaders

“Fans of The Witcher series will find The Ballad of Two Wolves to be a welcome continuation of Geralt’s adventures. The story by Bartosz Sztybor does a fine job of emulating the original novels of Andrzej Sapkowski, putting a dark twist on a classic fairy tale. The artwork by Miki Montllo is perfect, with fluid action, rich colors and distinctive character designs. Best of all, this story is easily accessible to anyone who hasn’t played The Witcher games or seen the Netflix series. If you haven’t explored the world of The Witcher before, this book is a perfect entry point.”—Kabooooom

“This is a perfect introduction to a miniseries that already feels like an emblematic Witcher story.”—ComicBook.com

A Fascinating Fusion of Facts & Fiction, “Music on the Bones” is for the Rock and Roll Fan in Everybody

0

How did the iconic music of the 1960’s, especially rock and roll, make its way from the heart of America to the ears of Russian youth during a time when it was banned in the Soviet Union?

The surprising answer to this question is among the many gems of little-known information found in the pages of the new book Music on the Bones. Now available on Amazon, Music on the Bones is a compelling blend of facts and fiction that tell the story of how the powerful music of such legends as The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and Janis Joplin, among many others, was secretly embedded within repurposed X-Rays in the USSR.

From censorship to freedom of speech, Music on the Bones delves into a host of social, political, and cultural issues which are as timely and relevant today as they were in the 1960’s. An album and a feature film based on the powerful story inspired by true events are also in the works.

Music on the Bones follows the plight of Max, a young Russian doctor, who is Jewish and trapped behind the Iron Curtain. He and his friends are striving to work for freedom of expression, and freedom from oppression, against an Orwellian backdrop of constant surveillance and persecution. They are willing to risk imprisonment, or worse, to listen to the forbidden music of the free world, which holds the promise of another life.

Enter Valerie, an idealistic American film student, who is invited to Moscow by Russia’s Ministry of Culture under the watchful eye of the KGB, to make a propaganda film promoting the virtues of communism. After meeting with Max and his companions, Valerie discovers and is awakened to the harsh realities of Soviet life and risks her safety as well to reveal the truth in a secret second film.

Music on the Bones is co-authored for a worldwide audience by Jody Marriott and Avi Bar-Lev, the producers of several highly acclaimed award-winning independent films, including West of Thunder and Apple Seed. Renegade Press, LLC. Is the publisher of the book.

Music on the Bones also features images of many of the original 1960s X-Ray records from Marriott’s extensive collection, which boasts iconic songs from such internationally renowned recording artists as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, David Bowie, The Doors, The Mamas & The Papas, The Rolling Stones, Chubby Checker, and many more.

Whatever!!!! The newest single by music phenomenon and Bram Stoker Award winning author, Nzondi!

0

Influenced by mostly Seattle-bred bands like Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Nirvana, Nzondi’s second single ‘Whatever’ sounds like an Alternative Rock Ballad from a TV teen drama but is actually a song (inspired by true events) about a teenaged boy trying to provide comfort to his girlfriend after she lost her younger sister in a mass school shooting.

The rock singer, songwriter and Bram Stoker Award-winning author wrote, performed and produced the alternative rock song “Teenage RockStarr”. It features Dave Moreno (Puddle of Mudd) on drums. Both the radio and the clean versions feature Dave as the drummer but the clean version also features Hip Hop icon/actor, Fredro Starr from the legendary group Onyx.

Influenced by mostly Seattle-bred bands like Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Jimi Hendrix Experience and Nirvana, Nzondi’s “Teenage RockStarr” carries the energy of a Red Hot Chili Peppers-charged track.

Book Review: “Crucible of Gold” by Naomi Novik

0

Crucible of Gold” is book #7 of 9 in the Temeraire series.

Will Laurence and Temeraire have been in Australia for a while now and are adjusting to life there as civilians (remember that Laurence was found guilty of treason, his commission in the military revoked, and they were exiled to Australia as “prisoners”).

Now considered home, they are building a pavillion for the dragons with Temeraire, Iskierka and Granby, and Kulingile (who hatched in Australia and is now the size of Maximus) with Demane.

Then……Arthur Hammond arrives with news of a Tswana uprising in Brazil where they and the Portuguese are nearing war.

The only person who can bring peace to that crucial area is Laurence, and oh, by the way…..

Will Laurence is once again a Captain in the British Air Corp and his mission is to go to Brazil!

With a motley crew of “prisoners” from Australia, a few trusted officers, including Granby, Emily Roland, Demane, and Gong Su….the team is assembled and off they go, on the Allegiance, to Brazil.

Little do they know the adventure and danger that awaits them on this journey!

To find out what happens you can read the book. 🙂

“Crucible of Gold” is a sometimes terrifying, but, rousing, adventure as Laurence and team face multiple dangers from multiple sources. By the time I finished reading the book….I was exhausted. 🙂

Guest Post: 5 Scary Classics for A Movie Night with Kelsey James

0

In The Woman in the Castello, the heroine, Silvia Whitford, gets cast as the female lead in a horror movie called The Revenge of the Lake Witch. As part of my research for the book, I delved into the world of 1960s horror and the Hollywood on the Tiber era. These five movies include a mix of ones that served as inspiration — plus some creepy classic titles I’ve long loved and would recommend for a thrilling movie night!

Black Sunday

This movie is the one that most directly inspired The Revenge of the Lake Witch. It stars Barbara Steele, a famous “scream queen” from a number of Italian gothic horror flicks in the ’60s. The opening scene shows a witch being put to death when a mask is nailed into her face, and this powerful scene is referenced in my book by the assistant director as the basis for the beginning of The Revenge of the Lake WitchBlack Sunday’s production quality and special effects will seem a bit cheesy by 21st century standards, but film buffs will find it worth watching as a classic example of Italian horror.

The Haunting

As an adolescent, I saw the 1999 remake of this, and for my book research decided to watch the 1963 version. It’s critically acclaimed for a reason, and darker than the remake, subtler and more subversive. It’s notable for its queer representation—Theo’s character, played by Claire Bloom, is a lesbian—which was groundbreaking for the time. Julie Harris and Claire Bloom are both terrific, and there are whiffs of their on-screen dynamic between Silvia and Lucrezia’s characters in my book.

Castle of the Living Dead

This isn’t exactly a great example of Italian horror, although fans of Christopher Lee may find it worth a watch—but it was a useful example for my research. It was shot on location at Castello Orsini-Odeschalchi on a low budget over the course of a month or so. There also seems to have been some drama on set and it’s not entirely clear who the director was. The Revenge of the Lake Witch was also shot on location at a castle outside of Rome in a short timeframe, and as for on-set drama—well, you’ll just have to read the book and see for yourself.

Wait Until Dark

This is one of the best works of psychological suspense ever created. It came out in 1967 and stars Audrey Hepburn as a blind woman who accidentally comes into possession of a heroin-stuffed doll and finds herself pursued by criminals. Almost the entire movie takes place in her apartment. I first watched it in Bryant Park as part of a movies in the park event, and the hundreds of New Yorkers sprawled out on the lawn were scared out of their minds. Interestingly, when I watched The Shining in a park setting, the jump scares came across as funny and the movie got a lot of laughs. Not so with Wait Until Dark, which proves subtler mental terrors are actually more thrilling. I highly recommend this film—and recommend watching it in a group setting.

Dial M for Murder

This is one of my favorite Hitchcock movies—the other probably being Rear Window. Interestingly, both—much like Wait Until Dark—are set almost entirely on location in apartment settings. Both Wait Until Dark and Dial M For Murder were adapted from stage plays. This allows these settings to become characters in themselves and significant figures in the plot. It also means these movies have to hold your attention through incredibly tight dialogue, clever plotting and satisfying twists. Grace Kelly shines in both of these Hitchcock films (although, when doesn’t she?)

THE WOMAN IN THE CASTELLO

Set in 1960s Italy, this stylish, atmospheric debut spins a bewitching web of ruthless ambition, family secrets, and the consequences of forbidden love, as an ambitious American actress snags the starring role in a mysterious horror movie shooting on location in a crumbling medieval castle outside Rome…

Readers who enjoy the moody gothic allure of Kate Morton and Silvia Moreno-Garcia or the immersive settings of Lucinda Riley and Fiona Davis will be enthralled by Kelsey James’ spellbinding web of intriguing mystery, family secrets, forbidden love, and midcentury Italian flair.

“You’ll get lost in the pages of this lush, entertaining story.” —Ellen Marie Wiseman, New York Times bestselling author of The Lost Girls of Willowbrook

Rome, 1965: Aspiring actress Silvia Whitford arrives at Rome’s famed Cinecittà Studios from Los Angeles, ready for her big break and a taste of la dolce vita. Instead, she learns that the movie in which she was cast has been canceled. Desperate for money, Silvia has only one choice: seek out the Italian aunt she has never met.

Gabriella Conti lives in a crumbling castello on the edge of a volcanic lake. Silvia’s mother refuses to explain the rift that drove the sisters apart, but Silvia is fascinated by Gabriella, a once-famous actress who still radiates charisma. And the eerie castle inspires Silvia’s second chance when it becomes the location for a new horror movie, aptly named The Revenge of the Lake Witch—and she lands a starring role.

Silvia immerses herself in the part of an ingenue tormented by the ghost of her beautiful, seductive ancestor. But when Gabriella abruptly vanishes, the movie’s make-believe terrors seep into reality. No one else on set seems to share Silvia’s suspicions. Yet as she delves into Gabriella’s disappearance, she triggers a chain of events that illuminate dark secrets in the past—and a growing menace in the present…

Round Here and Over Yonder: A Front-Porch Travel Guide by Two Progressive Hillbillies (Yes, That’s a Thing) is a hilarious and irreverent travel guide that looks at visiting “round here” (the South) and “over yonder” (not the South)

When it comes down to it, Trae and Corey are just two Southern boys who, by virtue of luck and a little hard work, were lucky enough to see the world beyond Mammaw’s front porch. In their new hilarious and heartwarming travel guide, Round Here and Over Yonder, they take reader to the smallest of small towns in the South and to major US metropolises. (Or is it metropoli? We don’t know.) They even hop the Atlantic to review some of them fancy kings-and-castles places that PBS viewers can’t stop yapping about. From Chickamauga to Cheyenne, New York to New OrleansSeattle to Scotland—no matter where these two wandering jesters go, there’s something to roast, something to toast, and something to learn about what ties us together as humans. Even the most outrageous of us.

In Round Here and Over Yonder, you’ll find:

  • Loads of eccentric things folks say.

  • Seriously well-informed tips on exactly where to eat and what to order in each city.

  • Anecdotes from Corey and Trae about everything from “German Mardi Gras” in Helen, Georgia, to eatin’ over-priced rabbit in Napa, California.

  • Travel bingo boards and ad-libs for your own adventures.

  • And as many off-the-beaten-path jokes as can be packed into 256 pages!

Perfect for anyone who:

  • Likes to travel.

  • Loathes to travel.

  • Any Southerner who’s both a little proud and a little ashamed of the South (that’s all the sane ones).

  • Any Northerner, Midwesterner, or West Coaster who wants to know what two self-proclaimed rednecks have to say about their own hometown.

  • Anyone from the UK who thinks us Yanks are the craziest folks on God’s green earth (cause this book will likely confirm that stereotype, yup).

“Make no mistake, Round Here and Over Yonder is laugh-out-loud hilarious, but it’s also a remarkably accurate tongue-in-cheek travel guide that will both entertain and educate. In a world that can often seem way too serious, thank God for people like Trae and Corey,” said Matt Baugher, publisher of Harper Horizon.

Every state, town, and holler has its stereotypes. But what if there’s more to these places—many of which most of us have only heard of and never actually visited—than meets the eye? And what if it turns out that the people who inhabit them are just like us?

Round Here and Over Yonder will be available in hardcover, ebook, and audiobook. You can pre-order today at https://www.harpercollinsfocus.com/9781404117549/round-here-and-over-yonder/

About Trae Crowder and Corey Ryan Forrester:

Trae Crowder grew up in Celina, Tennessee, a town sometimes described as having “more liquor stores than traffic lights” (2-0 as of last count). Trae first gained national attention for his “Liberal Redneck” series of viral videos. He has been performing his particular brand of gravy-covered intellectual comedy for over a decade and touring nationally with Corey and their comedy and drinking partner, Drew.

Corey Ryan Forrester grew up in Chickamauga, Georgia, where he fell in love with comedy watching first Carson, then Leno, from a blanket on the floor next to his daddy, Dale. At sixteen, lying about his age, he worked up the nerve to do his first open mic. He spent the next decade hawking jokes at night then waking up to do random day jobs. He also ran the family bakery with his mom, where he was known as “Head Quiche Chef.” These days he tours with Trae and Drew on the wellRED stand-up tour, making all his comedy dreams come true.

Trae and Corey’s first book, The Liberal Redneck Manifesto: Draggin’ Dixie Outta the Dark, written along with their buddy Drew, was published by Atria in 2016.
