New Book From The STAR OF THE STAGE, SCREEN, AND KIDS’ BOOKS: COCONUT THE RESCUE PUP!

0

Gallopade International, distributor of Carole Marsh Books has announced the release of The Mystery of the Haunted Library book series, starring COCONUT, the author’s own real-life rescue dog, now available at gallopade.com.

Coconut, now seven, was found on the streets of Charleston, South Carolina, at four weeks old, four pounds, lost, alone, no color, no tag, and having seizures. A vet found Coconut, nursed her back to health and, via the rescue Noah’s Ark, made her way south to her forever home with children’s book author Carole Marsh.

“It was meant to be that someday I would find a home for Coconut in my books,” says the author from her writing studio in downtown Beaufort, South Carolina. “I actually rescued Coconut to be a companion to my husband, who had Parkinson’s Disease. When he insisted, ‘that little runt is NOT my dog!’, I realized she was mine, and indeed, after his death, she was my closest and constant companion.”

In The Mystery of the Haunted Library series, a graphic novel chapter book with embedded narrative non-fiction, Coconut serves as the furry sidekick to the kids who solve mysteries in some of the world’s greatest libraries. From a home base at fictional Spanish Moss School (the librarian, Ms. Bogus, is pretty mysterious herself), four students, plus the author and her dog, travel to a different famous library on a mission, encountering mystery, learning facts, and foiling foes.

“Coconut was born to be a book character!” says her owner. “She is my muse and my amusement. Patiently sleeps beneath my desk as I write. Goes on school visits with me. It is great fun to write her dialogue. I can pretty much read her mind!”

The multi-award-winning author has garnered accolades for her prior series, which appeal to young readers ages 7-12. Her goal is to instill a love of reading, an appreciation of collaboration to solve problems, and a fascination with historical facts. Even the addition of Coconut has a serious bent.

“At a time when kids are under stress, a book can be a real companion,” insists the author. “And the addition of a lively, lovable dog adds a comforting kind of charm and comedy that nothing else can!”

Marsh’s current readers are well aware that she is a real author, the books are based in real places they can visit, and that Coconut is a real dog. “I guess Coconut will get fan mail now,” she says. “I know she will answer it!”

Artist Lee Barrow, a Savannah School of Art and Design graduate, designer, and illustrator, brings the places and characters to life. “It has been so much fun to draw Coconut,” he says. “She loves to pose, and you can just tell what she is going to say!”

As the series premiers, the author reflects on her almost 50 years as a writer: “Now, more than ever, children need worthy books that combine literature with graphics that compel them to love to read as well as listen to stories. As we audiotape the books, I can’t wait to see what Coconut sounds like! I know her bark way too well!”

The first five books of The Mystery of the Haunted Library series were released on June 1, just in time for summer reading and back-to-school, and the sixth book will be released later in the summer. Carole Marsh is also the author of The Mystery at Biltmore HouseThe Mystery on Hilton Head IslandThe Mystery at Fort Sumter, and Tell Me Again How You Rescued Me. Marsh’s books are available for purchase on Amazon, area bookstores, and directly from Gallopade and other educational and library distributors. Gourmand Mysteries Set in France with Bonus Cookbooks by Ann Claire

0

In bookshops and bakeries, I face a similar problem: how to choose among all the tempting offerings? I’m the person who invites you to go ahead of her in line. Actually, I insist. I have to study every cake and cover.

The same happy dilemma applies to compiling book lists. When Kensington asked for a list of reading recommendations—summer cozy mysteries, perhaps, or books set in France—I was delighted. Then I spun my wheels. There are so many great choices. The list below provides a taste of France through mysteries that feature good food, as well as a dash of cookbooks, one of my favorite routes to armchair travel. I hope you’ll enjoy. Happy reading, bon voyage, and bon appétit!

Mastering the Art of French Murder by Colleen Cambridge

In Mastering the Art of French Murder, the enviable Tabitha Knight lives next door to Julia Child. They’re best friends. Julia teaches Tabitha to cook. They investigate a mystery together! Pull up your chair for mouthwatering meals, delightful characters, and a trip to post-World War II Paris.

Bruno, Chief of Police series by Martin Walker

Travel to the picturesque Périgord through a medley of crime, cuisine, and culture in this long-running series. Author Martin Walker bases the fictional village and residents of St. Denis on his real-life home in southwest France. His protagonist, Benoît Courrèges—aka Bruno, Chief of Police—confronts serious crimes but also takes time to enjoy the good things in life: his friends, his dog, and fine food and wine. With 17 books and novellas sprinkled in between, St. Denis will feel like a home away from home.

Bonus

Bruno’s Cookbook: Recipes and Traditions from a French Country Kitchen by Martin Walker and Julia Watson

I currently have this cookbook out from my library, but I know I shouldn’t be greedy and borrow it on repeat. I’ll be springing for my own copy. From the beautiful photos to the tempting recipes and vignettes about village life and Bruno’s culinary adventures, it’s a gem for the coffee table and the kitchen.

Sam Levitt series by Peter Mayle

Perhaps you’ve been swept away to sundrenched landscapes by Peter Mayle’s memoir, A Year in Provence. Have you sampled Mayle’s amateur investigator series? The Sam Levitt books star a former lawyer and wine connoisseur who is called upon to unravel twisty plots. Happily for Sam and readers, his investigations often take him to lovely locales and gourmet settings in southern France.

Dead and Ganache, A Chocolate Whisperer Mystery by Colette London

Here’s a fantasy job: chocolate whisperer! In book 4 of Colette London’s sweet mystery series, chocolate expert Hayden Mundy Moore travels to Brittany in western France to meet her chocolate mentor. Crimes ensue but with tasty breaks for buckwheat crepes, salted caramels, and of course chocolate. Other books in the series travel to San Francisco, Portland, London, and New England, all with delicious recipes.

Finally, no mystery here, but a bonus cookbook/encyclopedia:

Let’s Eat France by François-Régis Gaudry and Friends

This is more than a cookbook. As the wonderfully lengthy subtitle says, it’s “1,250 specialty foods, 375 iconic recipes, 350 topics, 260 personalities, plus hundreds of maps, charts, tricks, tips, and anecdotes and everything else you want to know about the food of France.” I’ll add that lifting this culinary compendium also counts as an arm-toning workout. It weighs in at just over 5.5 pounds!

Vicariously tour the sundrenched Mediterranean Coast in this perfectly escapist new cozy mystery series starring American expat-turned-bike tour company owner in Southern France.

Perfect for fans of Donna Leon’s The Commissario Guido Brunetti Mysteries, M.L. Longworth’s Provençal Mystery series, and armchair travel!

Nine months ago, Sadie Greene shocked friends and family by ditching her sensible office job in the Chicago suburbs and buying a sight-unseen French bicycling tour company, Oui Cycle. Now she’s living the unconventional life of her dreams in the gorgeous village of Sans-Souci-sur-Mer. Sans souci means carefree, but Sadie feels enough pressure to burst a tire when hometown friends arrive for a tour, including her former boss, Dom Appleton. Sadie is determined to show them the wonders of France and cycling—and to prove she made the right move.

She hopes her meticulously planned nine-day itinerary will win them over, with its stunning seascapes, delicious wine tastings, hilltop villages, and, of course, frequent stops for croissants. When Dom drags his heels on fun, Sadie vows he’ll enjoy if it kills her. That is, until Dom ends up dead. The tragedy was no accident. Someone went out of their way to bring a permanent end to Dom’s vacation.

As more crimes—and murder—roll in, suspicions hover over Oui Cycle. To save her dream business, help her friends, and bring justice, Sadie launches her own investigation. However, mysteries mount with every turn. On an uphill battle for clues, can Sadie come to terms with her painful past while spinning closer to the truth—or will a twisted killer put the brakes on her for good?

Pumpkin Spice Puppy By Laurien Berenson

Melanie Travis and her pedigree poodles are back on the case in an adorably giftable, fall time-themed hardcover by award-winning author Laurien Berenson!

It’s autumn in Connecticut and there’s a chill in the air, the fall leaves are a riot of color, and pumpkin spice is the flavor of the season. Melanie Travis is perennially busy, of course—but when the owner of a local pet supply shop is found murdered, sleuthing tops her To Do list . . .

Between taking care of her family and assorted Standard Poodles, Melanie is also working as a special needs tutor for Howard Academy, a private school in Greenwich, where her younger son attends kindergarten. This year, the headmaster has come up with an idea for a school fundraiser. All students will participate in a town-wide treasure hunt, with grades competing against each other.

Tokens shaped like pumpkin spice muffins have been hidden in downtown stores. Students will scramble to collect as many as they can in exchange for prizes. At first all goes smoothly, and the uptick in foot traffic to the stores is a win-win. . . . . Until the pet supply shop owner lodges a complaint. When Melanie stops by to smooth things over, she instead finds the man dead, a knife in his back, and his loyal, ever-vigilant Chow Chow locked in the storeroom.

Over the headmaster’s objections, Melanie is once again drawn into an investigation. It doesn’t take her long to gather a list of suspects, from neighbors balking about the number of rescue Chows the man was fostering in his home, to the landlord who’d filed an eviction notice against him, to the bitter ex-wife who is happy he’s gone. With the fundraiser soon drawing to a close and celebrations imminent, Melanie will have to follow every clue—before the biggest prize is staying alive . . .

Five years later, pregnant college student Amanda Hartley lies in a coma. The police say she attempted suicide, but the details don’t add up. Where is the father? Who was paying for Amanda’s Manhattan penthouse? Why did Amanda have a note with Lee’s name in her backpack? There’s also one alarming coincidence: Amanda was last seen on Dune Road in the Hamptons—where the murder victim in Lee’s previous investigation disappeared.

As she’s pulled back into the still-unsolved case that destroyed her career, Lee sees the chance to amend the mistakes of her past. But finding a killer and unearthing Amanda’s secrets sends her down a darker path than she has ever walked before.

Love & Whiskey: The Remarkable True Story of Jack Daniel & His Master Distiller Nearest Green

0

T

Love & Whiskey, published by award-winning book producer and publisher Melcher Media, is capturing the attention of readers and critics alike. Publishers Weekly gave it a starred review, noting “It’s a powerful portrayal of a largely hidden American history.” The book delves into the life and legacy of Nearest Green, the African American distilling genius pivotal in the creation of Jack Daniel’s. Set against the backdrop of Lynchburg, Tennessee, it weaves a thrilling blend of personal discovery, historical investigation, and the revelation of a long-overlooked story. Love & Whiskey invites readers to witness a story of enduring friendship, resilience, and the impact of giving credit where it’s long overdue. It’s an inspiring tale of how uncovering the past can forge new paths and how the spirit of whiskey has connected lives across generations.

“At its core, this book is about love and hope,” says Weaver. “At a moment in America’s history, where we’re all searching for those four-letter words, Love & Whiskey delivers that in spades.”

Through extensive research, personal interviews, and uncovering long-buried documents, Weaver highlights the remarkable bond between Nearest Green and Jack Daniel. Daniel’s efforts to ensure Green’s legacy reflect his deep respect for his mentor, teacher, friend, and first master distiller, making this story one of the greatest examples of allyship in American history. Jack’s dedication extended to preserving the stories and achievements of Green’s descendants, who continued working alongside Daniel’s descendants for generations.

As Weaver intertwines her present-day quest with the historical threads of Green and Daniel’s lives throughout the book, she also describes how she paid homage to their legacy by launching and spearheading the creation of Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey. Valued conservatively by Forbes at $1.1 billion, it is the fastest-growing bourbon company in American history and the world’s most-awarded bourbon and American Whiskey for the past five years. Readers of Love & Whiskey get a firsthand account of how Weaver built this company against all odds, creating a new blueprint by rejecting conventional wisdom.

The Love & Whiskey Unfiltered book tour kicks off today with a sold-out event at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., followed by another sold-out event at the Hard Rock Hotel in Tampa, Florida. This revolutionary tour features a bold, new approach: no celebrity or influencer host. Instead, Weaver will directly answer unfiltered questions from the audience, making the audience the true host of the event. This unprecedented format allows for an intimate and engaging experience where attendees can interact directly with one of the most talked-about CEOs in America.

Accompanying Weaver on the tour is Victoria Eady Butler, fifth generation Nearest Green descendant and four-time Master Blender of the Year, who will lead an exclusive tasting of four single barrels and blends she created exclusively for this tour. This unique element enhances the experience, offering attendees a deeper appreciation of the craft behind Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey.

he highly anticipated release of Love & Whiskey: The Remarkable True Story of Jack Daniel, His Master Distiller Nearest Green, and the Improbable Rise of Uncle Nearest written by Fawn Weaver, founder and CEO of Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey. “Everything I Know About Love I Learned in a Prisoner of War Camp”

0

“I never imagined that the skills we needed to survive years of torture and abuse would be the same skills you need to create a successful long-term marriage,” says Lee Ellis, a former fighter pilot, retired Air Force Colonel, and five-year POW (Prisoner of War).  In “Captured by Love: Inspiring True Romance Stories from Vietnam POWs” he has compiled a unique collection of 20 war stories entwined with love stories that are emotional, inspiring and instructive.

While psychologists, sociologists and neuroscientists have been working for decades to discover the secrets of happiness, wellness and longevity, 20 American couples have been living “happily ever after” marriages for between 44 and 64 years.

Ellis discovered seven “Love Lessons” that appeared repeatedly in the stories he gathered from his fellow POWs. “There is something universal and powerful about these lessons. They’re not sophisticated or difficult, but we all need reminders and practice.”

The seven principles are…

  1. Shared values. Couples whose values align—be they spiritual or personal or cultural values—have a firm foundation for a happy long-term relationship.
  2. Companionship. Your journey through life is easier, more fun and more meaningful if you have a loving partner. Good companions are both independent and interdependent.
  3. Respect. Everyone has a deep need to be respected—especially at home. Couples who are intentional about showing appreciation and gratitude strengthen their bonds.
  4. Focus on your partner’s strengths. As the song says, “Accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative.” If this were your one guiding principle, it would produce marital harmony and bliss.
  5. Trust. It is a cornerstone of all successful relationships. Trust ensures that you can be vulnerable with each other, and this creates intimacy.
  6. Optimism. The most successful people in business, life and love share optimism as a core trait. Optimists can handle any challenges.
  7. Commitment. Wedding vows—as well as military oaths—are sacred promises to be true to your partner or country. Commitment is the glue that bonds couples together.

The 20 love stories are powerful, inspiring and funny.

  • “Hi Jane! It’s me, Tarzan!” were the first words POW Smitty Harris said, on a trans-Pacific phone call to his wife, Louise, in their first conversation after eight years apart. Smitty’s exclamation reconnected them instantly. Pet names are “in jokes” through which couples share a humorous lightness and deep connection.
  • Mo Baker was obsessed with flying since he was a boy, and continued after he returned home, after being shot down, captured, and enduring more than five years as a POW. His wife, Honey, understands and accepts his affection for his planes. “Mo was fanatical about flying. I figured I could accept him having a mistress—as long as she was made of metal and weighed 50,000 pounds!”
  • Do you believe in Fate? Ralph and Bobbi Gaither do. “I wore a POW/MIA bracelet with Ralph’s name on it for several years before we met. When we finally did meet it was on a blind date! I had no idea it would be him.”

Ellis co-authored “Captured by Love” with love-expert Greg Godek, author of “1001 Ways to be Romantic.” Godek says, “Interviewing and getting to know our 20 couples was an awe-inspiring experience.”

The married lives of these couples mirror the insights from the longest in-depth longitudinal study on human life ever conducted (the Harvard Study of Adult Development, begun in 1938). (https://www.adultdevelopmentstudy.org/). You may have seen headlines like, “Scientists Discover that Close Relationships are the Number 1 Factor in Longevity & Happiness.” In The Atlantic magazine, one researcher reports, “The study has brought us to a simple and profound conclusion: Good relationships lead to health and happiness.”

The 20 couples in this book knew this long ago.

Kirkus Reviews
“…these stories are impressive examples of resilience, and an important record of sacrifice, survival, and the redemptive power of love.”
Lee Ellis, Colonel, USAF (Ret) was among the youngest captives at the infamous “Hanoi Hilton” POW camp, and was single at the time. Upon his return he searched for a year before he found the love of his life. Through his firm Leading with Honor Lee speaks and consults on leadership, and helped develop a personality assessment that is used worldwide. He has authored books that help people understand themselves and appreciate others’ differences.
Greg Godek is a relationship expert, and author of 17 books, including the #1 bestseller “1001 Ways to be Romantic.” He advised Oprah’s audience, and taught a romance class on “The Today Show.”
