TRAPPED WITHIN from Author Jo Ann Glim

0

ReleaseDayWelcome, Jo Ann. This seems to be a rather poignant and heartfelt book, please give us a little look inside. Readers, this book releases today and Jo Ann is giving away an Amazon gift card to one lucky commentor

Thank you, ReadersEntertainment.com for the opportunity to debut my new release on your site today.

To tell the truth, I don’t know which emotion will spill out first. I want to shout YAHOO! Giggle like a kid. Caress the cover of Trapped Within with awe and wonder and dance around the room. The book was written in four months right after I had endured a hemorrhagic stroke (paralyzed on my right side from head to toe, aphasic, and seeing multiple images). My hand was so damaged that even spellcheck gave up on my typing skills but I was determined to finish what I had begun! Most of the original manuscript was typed with my left hand. Then, it sat . . . tucked in a drawer for twenty-two years.

Richard Paul Evans, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author said it best in his endorsement of the finished book, “Trapped Within is a powerful and intimate story about the endurance of the human spirit during a time of life-threatening crisis.”

That day started like any other but by lunchtime, I was fighting for my very life. A stroke is like that. You don’t see it coming. There was nothing to do but let nature take its course. No guarantee I’d live much less return to full health.

So, be prepared to travel through the terror and frustration of paralysis to a place of peace and gratitude where life meets hope.

Trapped Within” is written to offer encouragement to stroke survivors, hope to their family members and caretakers, and understanding to medical professionals or anyone interested in knowing what it’s like to be trapped within your own body.

BLURB:

We never expect our body to betray us but it can and sometimes, it does. Surviving a hemorrhagic stroke is a story few live to tell but the author of this new book did. The

story is told from the point of view of the stroke survivor as she made her way from near-death, to paralyzed survivor, to functioning adult, and advocate for others beginning the same long and difficult journey.

So, be prepared to travel through the terror and frustration of paralysis to a commitment to work like an Olympian with no guarantees of success, to a place of peace and gratitude where life resides with hope.

About the Author:
Glim was born in Chicago, Illinois to a military family and raised in Anacortes, Washington in the far reaches of the Pacific Northwest in a three-generational household. Even though the family was poor, she never knew it.  Poverty taught her life skills: self-sufficiency, creativity, and saving for a rainy day. Her childhood home was filled with love. Tragedy struck when she was fourteen and her mother passed away. Within three weeks, her grandparents were relocated to a nursing home in Illinois and she was taken in by her mother’s sister. Everything she had known to be home was gone.

After she finished school, Glim’s career followed three paths: MEDIA – (as a disc jockey/copywriter) WSDM-FM Chicago, KMPX-FM San Francisco, and KIKI-AM Hawaii; and continued in COMMUNICATIONS – a forty-year freelance portfolio with credits including an award-winning column in fourteen northern Illinois newspapers; one-liners for nationally known comedians; monthly articles for Manatee County Florida’s Chamber of Commerce Current magazine, to name a few. She took courses in BUSINESS MANAGEMENT – at a local college and after moving to the suburbs, began working for Kelly Services. Sixteen years later, she retired as an on-site Human Resources Manager responsible for the temporary needs of a Fortune 500 company.

She now lives in Florida with her husband, Bill, and their Scottish Terrier, Lucy. Her passions are writing, photography, and travel. She loves Chicago pizza, and is happiest travelling with her hubby, playing handbells, or on hiking trails with her camera and dog.

An Interview with Thriller Author William R. Leibowitz

THE AUSTIN PARADOX BOOK COVERWelcome William, we are thrilled to have you on Reader’s Entertainment. Let’s start with you telling us a bit about your latest release. . . . . The Austin Paradox

A:  The Austin Paradox is the sequel to the critically acclaimed, award winning novel, Miracle Man, which was named by Amazon as ONE OF THE TOP 100 NOVELS OF 2015, a TOP 10 BEST SELLING THRILLER and a TOP 10 NEW YORK TIMES/AMAZON BEST SELLER. The Austin Paradox continues the remarkable saga of Robert James Austin, the greatest genius in human history, whose medical cures saved countless millions.  A fully “stand-alone” novel, THE AUSTIN PARADOX can be enjoyed without having read the series’ first book.

In this emotionally charged medical/psychological/conspiracy thriller, the reader embarks on an unpredictable action-packed journey as Austin battles Big Pharma, the Director of the CIA, terrorists who lose control of a biological weapon, and a bevy of corrupt politicians and oligarchs.  The Austin Paradox opens with Austin having lost his extraordinary intellectual powers in a laboratory explosion that was intended to kill him.  Still in the prime of life, the blast cuts him down at the pinnacle of his brilliance and robs him of his tools. The greatest genius in history now struggles to find meaning in a life that has become devoid of purpose.  On a journey of self-discovery in an effort to regain his abilities, Austin clashes with private demons that threaten his sanity, a government obsessed with controlling him, and metaphysical forces intent on destroying him.  When ruthless political and business interests align to pose an existential threat to humanity, Austin is thrust into the maelstrom. Doubted even by those who love him, Austin confronts a harrowing paradox as time runs out to save mankind from extinction.

Q:  What do you feel is the most unique aspect of your story?

A:  Definitely, the protagonist, Robert James Austin.  As an infant, he is the victim of an unspeakable crime, but he rises to become a superhero who saves the lives of millions.  Austin is a multi-faceted character, a deeply complex, troubled and flawed genius.

Q:  What genre(s) is this and who do you think will enjoy reading it?

A:  The Austin Paradox is a thriller—specifically a medical/psychological/conspiracy thriller.  Woven into the plot are a varietyMIRACLE MAN BOOK COVER of current compelling social and political issues.  I think that anyone who enjoys a fast-paced realistic thriller that makes them think will enjoy the book. Also, science fiction readers will like it because of the medical/science content which is quite interesting.

Q:  Have you received any feedback on it yet, and if so, what was it?

A:  I’ve gotten terrific critical and reader reaction, with an overall Amazon rating of 4.7.  The following are just a sample of the reviews:

“Bringing a unique and compelling voice to the science fiction genre, Leibowitz set himself apart with his debut novel, Miracle Man, and The Austin Paradox now kicks his series into overdrive.  With plotting that is fast-paced, elegant and compelling, it’s a shrewd, expansive and propulsive story that encompasses all the requisites of great science fiction.  From the quality and depth of his writing to strong literary values, Leibowitz continues to break new ground.  Delivering another superb novel, Leibowitz has done his many fans proud with a truly exceptional thriller.  The Austin Paradox is recommended without reservation and is an absolute must-read.”   Book Viral

“Connections between small events and larger consequences make for vivid, engrossing reading that doesn’t sacrifice personal relationships for the higher cause of escalating a thriller’s tense atmosphere.  This is an added plus to a story that grabs from the start and is just as hard to put down as a Robin Cook saga; perhaps more so, because the family atmosphere and characters in The Austin Paradox are exceptionally well-done.  It’s hard to capture the full impact on the reader of the combination of a medical thriller paired with government and terrorist forces, and interwoven with international intrigue; all wound into one genius’ life and times.  The result engages readers on many levels, from political to psychological to spiritual arenas, and is highly recommended for fans of medical and international espionage thrillers.”   The Midwest Book Review

“Leibowitz provides readers with well-developed characters and subplots that will scare even the most unshakable personalities.  But make no mistake–you will be kept on the edge of your seat right from the beginning.  The author does a great job of keeping the suspense and action going throughout the book and I recommend this compelling read to all who enjoy intense medical/psychological thrillers.”   Reader Views

How Reading for Pleasure Makes You Smarter

How Reading for Pleasure Makes You SmarterHow Reading for Pleasure Makes You Smarter
A Guest Post by Brooke Chaplan

If you enjoy reading for fun, you can rest easy knowing you’re doing more than just relaxing. Even casual reading for pleasure can improve brain function and potentially enhance a person’s intellect. Here are several ways in which frequent reading can make you more intelligent in various ways.

Enhanced Vocabulary

Enjoying the written works by other people, especially those from a diverse range of backgrounds, will expose you to a rich vocabulary that you may not have experienced previously. Even if you do not take the time to look up new words, readers are able to determine their meaning by reading them in context. In this way, reading not only improves vocabulary, but also their ability to extrapolate meaning from incomplete data and form miniature hypotheses.

Broader Ideas

When you enjoy your reading material, you tend to pay close attention and consciously as well as unconsciously pick up new ideas. Expanded perspectives can change the way you think by helping you to see and understand different issues and topics. Reading thus broadens your mind with expanded concepts.

Analytical Thought

As you try to figure out a mystery novel or understand the character development of a popular biography, your analytical skills will improve as a result. Reading widely can help improve your analytical skills in many academic disciplines, including math, because it helps students learn to process information quickly and be better prepared for scanning problems. While reading will not be a replacement for traditional math tutoring, you can rest easy knowing that it will improve a child’s ability to keep up with their studies.

Organizational Ability

The more familiar you become with writing conventions and formats, the stronger your own organization skills become. In reading through an interesting book, whether fiction or nonfiction, you subconsciously note its structure and how ideas are revealed through each chapter. This organizational process can be conveyed to readers in ways that will impact how they organize other information sources. Noting how books are organized helps readers to balance ideas within a specific framework.

Creative Insight

Reading material that you find intriguing may unleash your creative capabilities. Many famous people have claimed to find inspiration from their favorite books. Cark Sagan, the famous astrophysicist, astronomer, and science communicator, said “To read is to voyage through time.” Beyond time, books take us to other worlds and into the lives of other people, which expands thought and empathy. And there are other mental benefits: studies have linked reading with lowered depression and anxiety.

Books are one of the best strategies for self-improvement, especially in areas of thought and analysis. If you aren’t already reading for pleasure, give it a try. Not only will it help spark your creative juices and inspire your mind, it will also help you organize thoughts and map out problems easier.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for creative teens, are now accepting submissions from students across the country in grades 7–12. Presented by the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the Awards have fostered the talent of millions of students since 1923 and feature a distinguished list of alumni including Andy Warhol, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, Joyce Carol Oates, Charles White, and Tschabalala Self, all of whom received recognition through the program when they were teens. In the 2019 program year, nearly 340,000 works were submitted for adjudication at the regional level, with more than 2,700 students receiving national recognition, including more than $300,000 in direct scholarships and millions in tuition support.

To learn more about the 2020 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, visit http://artandwriting.org.

“It has always been the mission of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards to open the door for students to explore their artistic talents, pursue their creative goals, and express themselves while gaining national recognition,” said Christopher Wisniewski, Executive Director of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. “It’s remarkable to see how teens use art and writing to speak their minds and shine a light on today’s most critical issues, and we at the Alliance look forward to providing these teens with new opportunities as they set out on their creative journeys.”

Students ages 13 and above residing in the United States, U.S. territories, or Canada, or enrolled in an accredited American school internationally, are invited to submit original work in any of the Awards’ 29 art and writing categories, including architecture, painting, flash fiction, poetry, printmaking, and video game design. All works are blindly adjudicated based on originality, technical skill, and the emergence of personal vision or voice, first on a regional level by more than 100 local affiliates of the Alliance, and then nationally by an impressive panel of industry experts. Annually, the Alliance partners with individuals, foundations, and corporations to offer scholarship opportunities for students in certain categories or addressing particular themes.

AUTHOR JAMES PATTERSON TEAMS UP WITH SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUBS TO HELP TEACHERS BUILD THEIR CLASSROOM LIBRARIES

0

pattersonFOR THE 5TH YEAR, BESTSELLING AUTHOR JAMES PATTERSON TEAMS UP WITH SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUBS TO HELP TEACHERS BUILD THEIR CLASSROOM LIBRARIES: 2019 DRAWS NOTABLE 125,000 APPLICANTS

James Patterson is personally donating $1.25 million, and Scholastic Book Clubs is matching with 1.25 million Bonus Points.

World’s bestselling author James Patterson and Scholastic Book Clubs, a division of Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education, and media company, today announced that 4,500 teachers across the country have won Patterson Partnership grants to help build their classroom libraries. Four thousand teachers will each receive $250 in cash and 250 Scholastic Book Clubs Bonus Points—which they can use to purchase top quality, age appropriate books that are of dire need in their classrooms. An additional 500 “new” teachers with less than three years of teaching experience will each receive $500 in cash and 500 Bonus Points, giving them extra critical help early in their careers.

To learn more about the program and see the full list of grant recipients, visit: http://www.scholastic.com/pattersonpartnership/.

This school year marks the fifth annual installment of the Patterson Partnership, created to save classroom libraries and assist teachers in acquiring books and other materials desperately needed in their classrooms. According to the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report™, classroom libraries are only available for 43% of school-age children, and only one third of kids say they have access to a classroom library with enough of the types of books they’d like to read. The report makes the importance of classroom libraries clear, as across ages, kids who have robust classroom libraries are more likely to be frequent readers. Additionally, the Scholastic Teacher & Principal School Report revealed that on average, teachers surveyed spent $530 of their own money on items for classroom or student use, with teachers in high-poverty schools spending $672 and teachers in low-poverty schools spending $495.

James Patterson said, “I write children’s books with the sole goal of getting kids reading—by (hopefully) giving them a story they like to read, that in turn gets them to pick up another. But without teachers, who are first showing their students how to read, and second, giving them access to books in their classrooms, we’d be nowhere. So whether they’re pointing kids towards the right book, inspiring creativity, or encouraging kindness, teachers change lives every single day. And I’m humbled to be able to give back to them in some way.”

The 2019 Patterson/Scholastic Book Clubs campaign drew a total of nearly 125,000 applicants, with more than 26,000 applications coming from new teachers. To date, James Patterson has donated $7.25 million to school and classroom libraries through his partnership with Scholastic Book Clubs—this year brings that total to $8.5 million. Winners are encouraged to share how these funds transform their classroom libraries and energize their students through quality books and top-notch resources by using the hashtag #PattersonPledge.

“Thanks to James Patterson’s unwavering commitment and generosity, we’ve been able to expand our reach to teachers—including new teachers—across America with this year’s Patterson Partnership giveaway,” said Judy Newman, President and Reader in Chief of Scholastic Book Clubs. “This year we received nearly 125,000 entries, clearly indicating the continued critical help teachers need to acquire quality books for their classroom libraries. Every child deserves a classroom that gives them access to limitless independent reading opportunities, and teachers should not have to personally bear the burden of filling their classroom library shelves with books. Giving back to teachers is a core promise of Scholastic Book Clubs, which is why we feel so honored to partner with James Patterson and privileged to be able to extend James’s vision of literacy for all throughout the 850,000 classrooms Scholastic Book Clubs serves.”

To apply for the grant, teachers in US schools from PreK through grade 12 were asked to share in 50 characters or less how they planned on using the funds and Bonus Points to help build their classroom libraries. All funds are personally donated by James Patterson, and all Bonus Points are donated by Scholastic Book Clubs. The collaboration reflects Scholastic Book Clubs’ overall commitment to helping teachers through purposeful initiatives including the Teacher Advisory Board, which brings teacher input directly to Scholastic Book Clubs throughout the school year to ensure offerings are the best possible resource for teachers, and a Bonus Point system through which teachers earn funds from every book purchased through Scholastic Book Clubs to buy much needed classroom materials.

SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS TO PUBLISH BOOK WITH ST. MARTIN’S PRESS

0

SarahHuckabeeSandersIt was announced today that former White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will publish a memoir about her life and experiences in the Trump Administration. St. Martin’s Press Editor-inChief George Witte acquired World Rights from literary agent David Limbaugh. Publication for the as-yet-untitled book is planned for fall 2020.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders served as the 29th White House Press Secretary under President Donald Trump, the third woman and the first mother to hold the position. A trusted confidante of the President, Sarah advised him on everything from press and communications strategy to personnel and policy. For two and a half years, Sarah was at the President’s side, battling with the media, working with lawmakers and CEOs, and accompanying the President on every foreign trip, including dozens of meetings with foreign leaders. In her book, she will recount her years on the front line of the campaign and in the administration, including the most dramatic and challenging moments. Sarah will address subjects including the media, family, faith, and performing an all-consuming and highly visible job while raising her young family.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders comments, “From Arkansas to the White House and back, I’m excited to tell my story about the challenges of being a working mom at the highest level of American politics, and my role in the historic fight raging between the Trump administration and its critics for the future of our country.”

George Witte comments, “Sarah Huckabee Sanders exemplifies grace under pressure, and her memoir will offer a truly unique perspective on the most important issues, events, and both public and behind-the-scenes conversations inside the White House.” Sarah Huckabee Sanders served as the White House press secretary for President Trump from July 2017 through June 2019. She previously joined the administration as deputy press secretary in January 2017 after working as a senior adviser for Trump’s election campaign. Upon her departure from the administration, President Trump described Sarah as “irreplaceable,” a “warrior” and “very special person with extraordinary talents, who has done an incredible job.”

Sanders has previously worked in leadership roles for U.S. Senators, Governors, and presidential campaigns. In Arkansas, Sanders was a senior adviser to Sen. Tom Cotton in 2014, when he defeated incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor, and was campaign manager for Sen. John Boozman in 2010 when he defeated incumbent Democratic Sen. Blanche Lincoln. In 2007 and 2008 Sanders helped lead her father, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, to victory in the Iowa Caucuses and seven other states as his National Political Director.

Sanders advises major Fortune 500 companies and non-profits, and previously served as campaign manager of the ONE campaign, a global non-profit founded by U2’s Bono to take action to end extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa.

Sanders has been recognized in TIME Magazine’s “40 under 40” as one of the best political operatives of her generation and is a Fox News contributor. She is married to her husband, Bryan, and they have three children, Scarlett, Huck, and George, and live in Little Rock, Arkansas.
