Praise for YouNeek Studios:

“Wale Williams—and his setting of ‘Lagoon City’—is to Lagos what Gotham City is to New York.”–Forbes

“’Bout time!” —Jamie Foxx

E.X.O.: The Legend of Wale Williams is the fast-paced, afro-futuristic graphic novel from Roye Okupe.”–CNN

“The designs are very slick and futuristic, and ignore some of the design stereotypes which frequently turn up in many “African set” productions created by less intimate creators. At an initial glance, it has all of the fast-paced action and hi-tech superhero antics that you would expect of most animated action series on Cartoon Network or NickToons, only it is featuring a brand-new hero for a brand-new era.”–The Examiner

All the Presidents’ Gardens: How the White House Grounds Have Grown with America By Marta McDowell

The 18-acres surrounding the White House have been an unwitting witness to history—kings and queens have dined there, bills and treaties have been signed, and presidents have landed and retreated. Throughout it all, the grounds have remained not only beautiful, but also a powerful reflection of American trends. In All the Presidents’ Gardens bestselling author Marta McDowell tells the untold history of the White House grounds with historical and contemporary photographs, vintage seeds catalogs, and rare glimpses into Presidential pastimes. History buffs will revel in the fascinating tidbits about Lincoln’s goats, Ike’s putting green, Jackie’s iconic roses, Amy Carter’s tree house, and Trump’s controversial renovations. Gardeners will enjoy the information on the plants whose favor has come and gone over the years and the gardeners who have been responsible for it all. As one head gardener put it, “What’s great about the job is that our trees, our plants, our shrubs, know nothing about politics.”

Behind The Words With Jill Eileen Smith

0

Today, we welcome bestselling author Jill Eileen Smith to the blog. We’ll be talking about her latest release THE ARK AND THE DOVE

First, tell our readers about the The Ark and The Dove.

Emzara and Noah live in a world that no longer respects or believes in the Creator. Except for a few of their remaining ancestors, they are alone in their beliefs. The world is a dark place because of the demonic infiltration of the Nephilim, which began in the days of Adam and Eve. When Noah hears from the Creator, who says He is going to destroy the world as they know it and tells Noah to build an ark to save himself and his family and the animals, Noah obeys without question. The challenge of building such an enormous ship takes years fraught with trials, loss, sabotage, and continuing animosity from friends and family. When the time comes to enter the ark, Zara and her family embark on an adventure that tests their faith and patience until that wonderful day when they step again onto dry ground. But the future is nothing like what they expected. Can their family survive in this newly cleansed world when their own hearts are far from free?

What drew you to the story of Noah’s wife and convinced you to make Zara the subject of your next novel?

The story of Noah and the ark has been the subject of much speculation and interest for generations. Besides the many children’s stories and Hollywood films on the subject, people have searched for the lost ark for years. The ark intrigues us, but nothing is really known about the people who boarded it and lived on it with the animals for over a year. Noah’s wife and daughters-in-law are not even named in Scripture. So who were they? What was it like to live with a man who heard from God and did what He said, even if it meant building a huge ship in the middle of a field? I wanted to get to know Zara and her family and imagine what life was like before, during, and after that famous flood.

Where did you turn to do research for this novel?

I visited the Ark Encounter in Kentucky the year I began this book. I bought books there that helped me to picture the ins and outs of life back then. I read the scriptural account many times and searched online and in my store of reference books for anything I could find to help me grasp what Noah’s family went through and what that might have been like.

What fictional elements did you weave into this story? Can you explain the purpose behind one of them?

Every character contains fictional elements because the Bible doesn’t tell us much about any of them. I had to create personalities for each individual, and I chose to make one of the daughters-in-law—Keziah, Ham’s wife—more difficult to live with to add conflict to the story. This also helps us to imagine why Ham is the one who later laughs at his father’s drunken nakedness and why Noah ends up cursing Ham’s son. Giving Ham a difficult wife added to his own rebellious spirit.

Throughout the book, Zara struggles with heartbreak. What allows her to push through?

She prays. She does try to fix things sometimes, but when fixing fails, she talks first to her mother and later to Noah. But most of the time she turns to the Creator because she recognizes that He is the only one with power to do anything regarding her circumstances.

Often, retellings of Noah’s story end when they leave the ark. Why did you decide to continue the story beyond that point?

Noah lived for many years after the flood, and if we do the math with regard to his age and that of his sons, we realize that they lived until the Tower of Babel and the confusing of the languages. I wanted to show what happened generations later without going into too much detail, while imagining what Noah and Zara might have felt when they saw their family moving in different directions. After they had been so close aboard the ark, that couldn’t have been easy, and yet they knew this was what God wanted. When I look at someone who has lived a long life, I find it fascinating to see what they lived through.

What do you hope readers will gain from reading The Ark and the Dove?

My hope is that readers will look at this story less as a mythical tale and more as a fictionalized account of history. That they will see God’s heart in creating humanity and how sin and evil caused Him great sorrow because sin broke our fellowship with Him. The flood came as judgment to show us how heinous sin is and to restore us to a relationship with the Creator. Of course, true restoration didn’t come until God sent the Redeemer. I hope my readers will seek to know our Redeemer, Jesus Messiah.

Is it intimidating to retell and flesh out the stories of the Bible?

Yes. Most of the time it feels nearly impossible to find the bigger story within the vignette given in Scripture. Every time thus far, after much prayer and many drafts, God has shown me that there is a story worth telling.

Thank you so much for joining us today and sharing your newest release. Here’s a look at THE ARK AND THE DOVE which releases today!!!

Zara and Noah have walked together with the Creator for their entire lives, and they have done their best in an increasingly wicked and defiant world to raise their three sons to follow in their footsteps. It has been a challenge–and it’s about to get much, much harder.

When the Creator tells her husband to build an ark to escape the coming wrath against the sins of humankind, Zara steps out with him in faith. But the derision and sabotage directed their way from both friends and extended family are difficult to bear, as is knowing that everyone she interacts with beyond her husband, her sons, and their wives is doomed to destruction. And when the ark is finally finished and the animals have been shut up inside, Zara and her family embark on an adventure that will test their patience and their faith as they await deliverance and dry ground.

Experience the story of Noah and the flood like you never have before. With bestselling and award-winning author Jill Eileen Smith as your guide, you’ll never look at a rainbow the same way again.

Guest Post: Herbal Help for Coughs and Colds by Anna Franklin

0

Winter and early spring always bring a seasonal crop of coughs, colds, and flu. Happily, Mother Nature provides us with some help to boost our immune systems and treat the symptoms of these ailments.

The most important thing is to eat well to boost your immune system, with plenty of fruits and vegetables. However, there are some herbs will also help. Rosemary is a perfect winter herb, antiviral and full of the vitamins and minerals we need at this time. I add it to soups and stews to get the benefits. Parsley helps lift winter fatigue and supplies plenty of vitamins C, A, and E, plus magnesium, iron, potassium, and calcium. Add it to food or make a cup of tea with a teaspoon of fresh leaves and a cup of boiling water. I always consume plenty of garlic in food in winter; it is both antiviral and antibacterial, and it has been shown to help reduce the incidence and duration of colds thanks to a compound called allin (this is converted in the body to sulphur, which increases the ability of white blood cells to fight infection). Thyme supports the immune system and strengthens the lungs. I like to infuse thyme leaves in honey to make an electuary and take a teaspoon of this whenever I need it or infuse a sprig of thyme in boiling water and drink a cup every morning.

Most people are aware of the benefits of lemon when treating a cold. It is high in vitamin C, which supports the immune system, and has antiseptic, astringent, and fever-reducing properties. It is also soothing the airways thanks to its anti-inflammatory compounds. Try making a tea with lemon juice, and if your diet allows, a teaspoon of honey.

One of the best-known immune boosters is echinacea (Echinacea purpurea or Echinacea angustifolia), usually taken in the form of a supplement. It contains several compounds that stimulate the activity of white blood cells to combat infections, particularly those that affect the sinuses, throat, and upper respiratory tract. My favourite immune booster, though, is elderberry (Sambucus niger), which I take in the form of elderberry vinegar or elderberry glycerite (macerate the berries in vinegar or glycerine for a week). Research has shown that strongly antiviral elderberry can reduce the duration and help relieve the symptoms of flu, colds, and upper respiratory tract infections. Elderberries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, which are also beneficial.

It is important to act quickly when an infection strikes. When the first signs of sore throat appear, I gargle with sage (Salvia officinalis) tea, made with two or three leaves and a cup of boiling water. Lemon juice diluted in lukewarm water is effective as a gargle for sore throats; the astringent juice helps shrink swollen tissue and the acidity creates a hostile environment for viruses and bacteria.

To relieve the miserable congestion of a cold and alleviate phlegm, you can try decongestant black pepperchillimustard, or horseradish added to food, or you could employ the drying effect of cinnamon to clear mucus from the sinuses and lungs (you can just chew on a cinnamon stick or take a cup of cinnamon tea). A steam inhalation of eucalyptus essential oil, or a few leaves of fresh marjoram or peppermint in a bowl of boiling water will clear your sinuses. The vitamin C in lemons helps reduce the levels of histamine, responsible for stuffed noses and runny eyes.

If your infection is accompanied by a fever, turn to diaphoretic herbs, which help promote sweating and help break the fever. A tea of ginger, sage, peppermint, yarrow (Achillea millefolium) or elder flowers (Sambucus niger) can all be beneficial.

For a cough, an old country remedy in Britain is horehound (Marrubium vulgare) tea. It helps loosen a cough and also has a soothing effect. Black pepper is an expectorant, which means it helps break up congestion in the chest and sinuses. Have some thyme growing in a pot in your kitchen? It is useful for coughs, colds, flu, and bronchitis, as it is both an expectorant and antispasmodic, which means it helps loosen mucus so you can cough it up while also relaxing constriction in the lungs. Add a spoon of soothing honey to thyme tea. Caraway (Carum carvi) contains mild antihistamines that help to relax the muscles that cause coughing spasms. Use in the form of a tea made from the crushed seeds to soothe the throat, nose, and other parts of the respiratory system. An herb specific for coughs is elecampane (Inula helenium); it supports the lungs and helps expel phlegm.

I hope that you do not suffer too many coughs and colds this winter, but remember that we always have plant allies that can help!

She embarks on a journey that exposes her true lineage as a witch of the Jumey, and then she must decide if she will surrender to the Pirate King or embrace her journey and fight.

‘Journey of a Lost Oxa’ is the first book in the ‘Legacy of Firyali’ duology and delves into the fantasy genre, transporting readers to a world of magic and exploration. “My goal is to transport readers to worlds where exploration fuels adventure and adversity shapes destinies,” said Smith. “I invite readers to explore the depths of imagination.”

‘Journey of a Lost Oxa’ will be available for purchase beginning on February 26, 2024, via Amazon. More information about Ro Smith can be found at https://iamrosmith.com.

CRUCIBLE OF CHAOS By Sebastien de Castell

A mortally wounded magistrate faces his deadliest trial inside an ancient abbey where the monks are going mad and the gods themselves may be to blame!

Estevar Borros, one of the legendary sword-fighting magistrates know as the Greatcoats and the king’s personal investigator of the supernatural, is no stranger to tales of ghosts and demons.  When the fractious monks of the abbey rumored to be the birthplace of the gods begin warring over claims of a new pantheon arising, the frantic abbot summons him to settle the dispute.

But Estevar has his own problems: a near-fatal sword wound from his last judicial duel, a sworn knight who claims he has proof the monks are consorting with demons, a diabolical inquisitor with no love for the Greatcoats, and a mysterious young woman claiming to be Estevar’s ally but who may well be his deadliest enemy.

Armed only with his famed investigative talents, his faltering skill with a blade and Imperious, his ornery mule, Estevar must root out the source of the madness lurking inside the once-sacred walls of Isola Sombra before its chaos spreads to the country he’s sworn to protect.

Investigate alongside Estevar and the most heroic mule ever to appear in print in this thrilling swashbuckling fantasy mystery by Sebastien De Castell, author of the internationally acclaimed Greatcoats and Spellslinger series!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Sebastien de Castell had just finished a degree in Archaeology when he started work on his first dig. Four hours later he realized how much he actually hated archaeology and left to pursue a very focused career as a musician, ombudsman, interaction designer, fight choreographer, teacher, project manager, actor, and product strategist.

His only defence against the charge of unbridled dilettantism is that he genuinely likes doing these things and that, in one way or another, each of these fields plays a role in his writing. He sternly resists the accusation of being a Renaissance Man in the hopes that more people will label him that way.

Sebastien’s acclaimed swashbuckling fantasy series, The Greatcoats. was shortlisted for both the 2014 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Fantasy. the Gemmell Morningstar Award for Best Debut, the Prix Imaginales for Best Foreign Work, and the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. His YA fantasy series, Spellslinger, was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and is published in more than a dozen languages.

Sebastien lives in Vancouver, Canada with his lovely wife and two belligerent cats. You can reach him at www.decastell.com

New Book Declares the End of Human Evolution

0

In his new book Evolution Ended, author J. J. Jerome posits that human evolution may be reversing. His assertions are based on the fact that modern technology allows almost everyone to survive and reproduce regardless of their physical traits, eliminating the survival advantage of “superior DNA”. Jerome cites substantial evidence that humanity is actually devolving with lowering IQ scores, epidemic obesity, and rapidly reducing fertility rates. The book Evolution Ended traces mankind’s journey from our tribal beginnings to a new AI-powered society where technology has replaced the natural evolutionary processes that made us human.

J.J. Jerome is an award-winning engineer and futurist who used his unique background in brain science and electronics to become a seminal influence in numerous cutting-edge technologies. He has been an internationally acknowledged leader in developing intelligent buildings and is currently one of the nation’s leading thinkers on using AI to mitigate climate change. His book Evolution Ended posits that humanity is in the midst of a technologically induced transition that is dramatically affecting our social, economic, and political systems. Evolution Ended shows how AI has accelerated this trend to lead to enormous changes in how we live, work, and the very evolution of mankind.
