Celebrating Mom’s with Cari Lynn Webb
Today we celebrate moms. And I have been blessed with one of the best moms. My mom worked full-time as an RN until I was born. (I’m the youngest of four and the only girl). Raising four rambunctious kids became a full-time job as my father’s work required quite a bit of out-of-town travel. My mom returned to nursing when I was a few months into my middle school experience at a brand-new school. Both mom and I were adjusting – her to working in the medical field she’d been out for a while and I was learning the rhythm of middle school and trying to make new friends. Several weeks in, my mom mentioned that she was considering quitting her job as the learning curve had gotten steep over the years she’d been out.
According to my mom, I looked right at her and told her that she wasn’t allowed to quit. In our family, we weren’t allowed to quit until we’d given something a full year or for a sport, a full season. We moved quite a bit growing up and the rule was that we had to give the new city a full year before we decided if we liked it or not. (This is also a rule I’ve put in place in my own home and leaned on quite often. Adjusting to new places and things can be hard, but with time, it gets better.) I don’t remember this particular conversation with my mother about quitting her job. However, I apparently added that if she quit on nursing, she’d be showing me it was fine to quit in my life too.
I love this memory my mom gave to me and I’m certain I told her just that. My mom continued to work all those years ago – she conquered the changes in her nursing field and began to love her job again. And my mom showed me what it means to not give up. It’s a childhood lesson I’ve passed on to my own daughters. I never gave up on my dream of being a published author because I wanted to teach my daughters not to give up on their dreams.
My mom continued to work in the neonatal intensive care unit as well as mother baby care even after I’d graduated from college. Mom worked mostly the night shift. Yet, there isn’t a time I can look back on when my mom wasn’t there for me. Whenever I needed her, even if she’d worked over-time that night, she found a way to help me with whatever I needed. My mom showed me that you can work and raise a family and do both successfully with love and conviction. And I can’t thank her enough for the gifts she’s given me.
