PAGE FLIPPING: SALAMIS The newest epic by New York Times Bestseller, Harry Turtledove

SALAMIS by Harry Turtledove

A new novel by one of the most acclaimed writers of alternate history in the world; a New York Times bestselling author who has been crowned as ‘the Master of Alternate History’ by
Publisher Weekly and has won virtually every major award associated with the genre.
Salamis is the fifth (standalone) novel in Harry Turtledove’s critically acclaimed Hellenic

Traders universe, detailing the adventures of two cousins, Menedemos and Sostratos, who
work as seaborne traders following the death of Alexander the Great. This time the stage is one of the greatest sea battles ever fought in ancient times; the Battle of Salamis of 306 BC. The small, free, and independent polis of Rhodes is trying to stay neutral between the local great powers, each ruled by one of Alexander the Great’s marshals: Asia Minor, controlled by one-eyed Antigonos, and Egypt, under the rule of Ptolemaios.

As tensions between the great powers escalate, Menedemos and Sostratos are trying to resolve their own problems, oblivious to the fact that one of the greatest navel fleets in ancient history is about to set sail. Ptolemaios, needing shipping to carry weapons for the army he intends to land, coerces Menedemos into bringing their ship, the Aphrodite, along as part of his expeditionary force. And so, very much against their will, Menedemos and Sostratos become small parts of one of the ancient world’s most significant naval battles.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Dubbed as “The Master of Alternate History” by Publishers Weekly, Harry Turtledove has written a number of classic bestsellers in the subgenre, including How Few Remain, The Guns of the South and The Man with the Iron Heart.

He uses his study of history (with a Ph.D in Byzantine history) to create alternate worlds in intricate detail, crafting enthralling adventures that have garnered him high critical praise as well as making him one of the most successful bestselling authors in alternate history.
Turtledove has won, or been nominated, for nearly every major award in science fiction (multiple times, for many) including the Hugo, Nebula, Sidewise (alternate history), Homer (short stories), The John Esten Cooke Award for Southern Fiction and the Prometheus Award. Many consider him to be one of the most distinguished authors of alternate history to have ever written in that sub-genre―he is certainly one of the most critically acclaimed.
Harry Turtledove is married to novelist Laura Frankos. They have three daughters, Alison, Rachel and Rebecca.

Tilly and the Bookwanderers by Anna James

Review by Holly Irish

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this book, it’s wonderful and whimsical. I like how it gradually lets you into the world of book wandering. First you see characters from famous books interact with Tilly. Then they let you slip inside a scene from Alice in Wonderland. Tilly is a great main character, and I love how level headed and strong she is. However, not all is what it seems. Tilly having to be raised by her grandparents is on the search for her mom, who left suddenly when she was just 1 years old. The key to finding her is learning how to book wander and finding out just exactly who her parents are. This is a great book for all readers. Happy reading my friends.

Book Summary:

A magical adventure to delight the imagination. A curl-up-on-the-sofa debut from a uniquely talented author.

Eleven year-old Tilly has lived above her grandparents’ bookshop ever since her mother disappeared shortly after she was born. Like the rest of her family, Tilly loves nothing more than to escape into the pages of her favourite stories.

One day Tilly realises that classic children’s characters are appearing in the shop through the magic of `book wandering’ – crossing over from the page into real life.

With the help of Anne of Green Gables and Alice in Wonderland. Tilly is determined to solve the mystery of what happened to her mother all those years ago, so she bravely steps into the unknown, unsure of what adventure lies ahead and what dangers she may face.

Recipe: Learning to make “Chicken Things” With Sci-Fi Author Jerry Harwood

0

CHICKEN THINGS! by Jerry Harwood

That is correct. I have been cooking these since my college days. My buddy’s wife made a similar version but did not have a name for them, so we just called them “Chicken Things.” The name has stuck.

I was asked to choose a favorite recipe. I know Thanksgiving is approaching. If you are like me, you have all sorts of family recipes and dishes for Thanksgiving day. However, sometimes family come in and stay longer. I always finding myself in search of quick meals or, even better, meals I can prep and be eaten whenever someone is hungry. Hot or cold, these are delicious. Put them in your fridge the days before Thanksgiving or cook them up Saturday when everyone is tired of turkey. Either way, they will be a hit. And the best part? They are cheap, easy to make, and only take 10 minutes in an oven.

Ingredients:

  • one block of cream cheese
  • one bag of shredded cheddar cheese (or grate your own)
  • one rotisserie chicken pulled (or cook and cube / shred chicken. I like the rotisserie because our local store sells them for $5.
  • two cans of Pillsbury croissants or dough sheets (I prefer the sheets, but my store was out when I made this recipe for the picture)
  • cayenne pepper or cajun seasoning to taste

Step one: Mix pulled chicken, softened cream cheese, shredded cheese, and cayenne together in a mixing bowl.

Step two: roll out on a cutting board the croissant roll. Cut into six squares. scoop a portion of mix in the center of each square (repeat with second roll)

Step three: fold corners up to make “dumplings.” pinch any open areas closed

Step four: Place on a cookie sheet (I spray with PAM) and cook according to the croissant / dough sheet directions. (375 degrees for 10 minutes) – I flip mine after 8 minutes but this is not necessary.

Then enjoy hot! Or cold! They have an entirely different taste cold. Any extra mix? Put it on a bagel!

Check out Jerry’s latest release TWELVE HOURS ON THE BLOCK

Eli hoped to do his time and get back to living life outside prison. However, that hope faded when he watched a prisoner rip a guard’s heart out and toss the body over the railing onto a funeral pyre of burning mattresses. The landscape of the prison begins to change as more and more strange characters strive for dominance in the anarchy that follows. Eli and his new friend, Tay, must navigate the chaos as the gods of the Aztec creation story emerge over the next twelve hours on the block.
