The New York Public Library Acquires Arthur Miller’s Personal Study Library

0

In advance of what would have been Arthur Miller’s 105th birthday, the Library announces the acquisition of his personal library

The New York Public Library has acquired by gift, and through the generosity of his family, Arthur Miller’s collection of his published plays, books, translations, anthologies, and other publications relating to his work in various editions, comprising 692 volumes in total.

Along with editions of his writings in English, the acquisition includes an extensive collection of translations into many European languages, plus Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese and others. Several are inscribed with his name and other occasional annotations.

Miller’s collection also contains essays, theatrical analysis and commentary, audio cassettes, magazines, and other ephemera, spanning the years 1928 – 2012. Also represented are a small number of works by other authors, among which four scripts by playwright Harold Pinter are of particular note.

The books will be added to the Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Collection of English and American Literature, which contains some 35,000 printed volumes, pamphlets, and broadsides, and 2,000 linear feet of literary archives and manuscripts, representing the work of more than 400 authors. The Berg has long collected books from the libraries of significant authors and literary figures, such as Vladimir Nabokov, Jack Kerouac, Lady Gregory, and Kenneth Koch.

Other highlights of the acquisition include:

  • Personalized copies of Miller’s books – including a 1951 edition of An Enemy of the People, inscribed to Marilyn Monroe, and a 2001 edition of On Politics and the Art of Acting to Inge Morath.
  • Extensive translations of Miller’s work, including nine translations of The Crucible (Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Spanish).
  • “Death of a Salesman in Scandinavia” – a box of newspaper clippings, theatre programmes, and other ephemera primarily related to a touring production 1949-1950.

“The New York Public Library is thrilled to add Arthur Miller’s study library to the Berg Collection, and to further enrich its holdings of one of America’s greatest playwrights,” said Declan Kiely, Director, Special Collections and Exhibitions. “Arthur Miller’s plays transformed American theater in the years following the Great Depression and World War II, and the influence of his New York City upbringing is visible in some of his most acclaimed works, including Death of a Salesman and A View from the Bridge.”

“The New York Public Library is the perfect place to house Arthur Miller’s personal library. These are books which lived in the shelves lining Arthur’s study, and which he read and handled regularly in his life; they are books that have been loved,” said the Miller family. “We could not be happier to know that Arthur’s precious collection is housed in the New York Public Library, and now belongs to the people of the great city that raised him.

The Arthur Miller Library strengthens the Berg Collection by significantly expanding its representation of American drama and providing a meaningful cornerstone on which holdings in this area can continue to be built. This acquisition of this collection additionally complements the Library’s holdings of photographs, technical drawings, recordings, and other material related to the production of Miller’s plays at the Library of the Performing Arts.

Arthur Miller (1915 – 2005) was an American playwright and essayist. Born in New York City, he began writing while a student at the University of Michigan, and was established as an important writer when his play All My Sons won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award in 1947. Significant themes in Miller’s work include Jewishness, suffering, and heroes staying true to their moral choices in the face of pressure from their communities. Other major works by Miller include Death of a Salesman (1949); an adaptation of Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People (1950); The Crucible (1953); A View from the Bridge (1955), which won Miller his third Drama Critics Circle Award; After the Fall (1964), his first play after a nine-year hiatus; and The Price (1968). Miller also wrote the screenplay for the 1961 movie The Misfits, starring Clark Gable and Miller’s then-wife Marilyn Monroe. Miller’s autobiography, Timebends: A Life, was published in 1987.

Dirty Deeds (Midnight Rider Series Book 2) by DV Wolfe

Dirty Deeds by DV Wolfe

If only I could give it more than 5 stars! LOL

About the Book: After St. Louis, I knew it was time to seat the cannibal tribe in the “past tense” section of living. I mean, you just don’t kidnap someone’s demon accountant. That’s just frickin’ rude.

Of course, now we’re doing the chasing, like a couple of shotgun-toting girls hunting down our dates to the Sadie Hawkins’ dance. Well….except that Noah’s not a girl…and our dates are a cannibal tribe and yet another dickbag demon that wants to kill me. Oh, and the dance is death. Possibly of the eaten-alive, cannibal variety. At least if the cannibals get me first. If it’s the demon, there’s a good chance it will involve a reenactment of the scene from that Indiana Jones movie when the guy rips the poor sap’s heart right out of his chest.

So that’s fun.

Then there’s the constant acid reflux of having Noah along for the ride. Apparently my handcart, hurtling towards Hell seats two. I’ll do my best to keep him alive as we hunt Necrowitches, Pucas, bugbears, demons, and of course, Sister Smile and her tribe of cannibals.

Raise the whiskey and pass the ammunition.

5 out of 5 stars.

Review:

How have I not heard of this series before?!!!
So this is kind of like Armies of Darkness/Ash vs Evil Dead meets Constantine. It’s so original with the cannibals and demons and witches wrapped with sarcasm and humor!
I ate this up (yeah…that’s a pun since there are cannibals in the book) in a day! I will certainly read more in this series!

Neighborhood Lines by Michael Patrick Murphy Book Trailer

0
A Half-Century After Boston’s Busing Crisis, A Look Back At A Colorblind Friendship Amid Racial Tensions in ‘Neighborhood Lines’ http://www.neighborhoodlines.com/ Profoundly moving, fearless and inspiring, Michael Patrick Murphy’s novel “Neighborhood Lines” shines a light on a friendship between two individuals caught up in the effort to desegregate Boston schools in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Nakedly honest and grippingly dramatic, this is the story of the bonds formed by Patrick and Nate, two students from dramatically different Boston neighborhoods. Patrick is white, Irish-Catholic and from South Boston. Nate is an African-American star athlete from the black section of Boston. Both meet in the classrooms of Boston’s Cathedral High School and, against all odds, forge a friendship that is lasting and true. The story is a testament to the power of love and solidarity despite the fear and hatred of racial discrimination. 3.5 stars

Review- The book is kind of like an ensemble cast of a TV series, or better yet, a soap opera. We learn about all these secrets people keep and then go about trying to right past wrongs.
This is more telling than showing and some people are good with that. It does read a bit like it was written for television.
You do care about the characters though the dialog leaves a lot to be desired.
All in all it’s an okay story and worth a read if you love big ensemble casts.

Civil Rights Icon Ruby Bridges’ Releases New Book

0

From civil rights activist and icon Ruby Bridges comes a powerful new book, THIS IS YOUR TIME, published by Delacorte Press today, November 10. This is the first book from Bridges in over twenty years and was released just a few days prior to the sixtieth anniversary of her becoming the first Black student to attend the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans on November 14, 1960, as a six-year-old.

Inspired by the recent wave of activism for racial justice led by young people, Bridges has penned a powerful letter of encouragement to readers, recounting her experience integrating the New Orleans public school system and culminating in a call to action for a new generation of young activists and adults to unite. The text is accompanied by black-and-white photographs from the 1960s, as well as of images of what is happening in the nation and around the world today.

The beautifully designed volume features jacket art selected by Bridges, which shows a portion of Norman Rockwell’s 1964 painting The Problem We All Live With—considered an iconic image of the civil rights movement—featuring six-year-old Ruby escorted by federal marshals past a wall smeared with racist graffiti and the juice of a thrown tomato. The painting originally appeared as a centerfold in the January 14, 1964, issue of Look magazine.

A now-viral illustration depicts Vice President-elect Kamala Harris walking next to a wall with her shadow transformed into Ruby Bridges’ silhouette from Rockwell’s painting. The drawing, created by San Francisco-based artist Bria Goeller, is being shared widely on social, including by Bridges herself.

Bridges has been on the national media circuit to promote her book, including Late Night with Trevor Noah, the TODAY Show, and NPR’s Weekend Edition . She’s also slated to do The View, and has upcoming interviews with People magazine, USA Today and Glamour.com.

Mahogany Books presents a virtual discussion with Ruby Bridges about THIS IS YOUR TIME tonight at 7:00 p.m. via Crowdcast To register, click here.

Ruby’s honest and impassioned words, imbued with love and grace, serve as a moving reminder that “what can inspire tomorrow often lies in our past.” Her book will electrify people of all ages as the struggle for liberty and justice for all continues and the powerful legacy of Ruby Bridges endures.

She also narrates the audiobook edition of THIS IS YOUR TIME, available from Listening Library.

Ruby Bridges is a civil rights activist who at the age of six was the first Black student to integrate an all-white elementary school in New Orleans. She was born in Mississippi in 1954, the same year the United States Supreme Court handed down its landmark decision ordering the integration of public schools. Her family later moved to New Orleans, where on November 14, 1960, Bridges began attending William Frantz Elementary School, single-handedly initiating the desegregation of public education in New Orleans. Her walk to the front door of the school was immortalized in Norman Rockwell’s painting The Problem We All Live With, in Robert Coles’s book The Story of Ruby Bridges, and in the Disney movie Ruby Bridges. THIS IS YOUR TIME is her first book in over twenty years, following the publication of her award-winning autobiography, Through My Eyes.

She established the Ruby Bridges Foundation to provide leadership training programs that inspire youth and community leaders to embrace and value the richness of diversity. Bridges is the recipient of numerous awards, including the NAACP Martin Luther King Award, the Presidential Citizens Medal, and honorary doctorate degrees from Connecticut College, College of New Rochelle, Columbia University Teachers College, and Tulane University.

The Early Years by Rachel G. Carrington Book Trailer

The Early Years.

The Early Years, a Memoir, is the life story of a southern Kentucky girl, born in1930, and her goals to go to college to become a teacher. Even though her father had been unable to acquire more than grade eight education for himself, he urged Rachel toward her goals. Rachel, his firstborn of eleven children, had begun to realize how impossible her choice of employment was as support for further education from her parents was impossible. Even though the job her father held on the railroad, one of the major employers locally, he could afford little beyond feeding and clothing his family. Realizing this, Rachel had started to look toward other local employment after graduation, as teaching now seemed unrealistic. She could still live at home, as her parents had hoped a teaching job would keep her local. Toward the end of her senior year, teaching, again, seemed a possibility with her opportunity to apply for a major, lucrative scholarship. When Rachel learned she was to be awarded the scholarship, she began to have second thoughts. She realized that the job opportunity would take her away from her local area, from her family and a returning veteran she had met who had stared to mean a lot to her. This fork in the road of life caused her to make difficult, but clear decisions, to give up the scholarship and follow her heart. The story continues as the young couple starts the struggle, first, to be together, then to work toward a better life for themselves and their future family. The story concentrates on their struggles and hardships yet, joys and achievement over hurdle after hurdle, but always moving forward toward goals set and while keeping their faith that God will see them through.

Rachel’s and Brad’s story is an example of what it takes to move toward a better life and the work and dedication it takes while trusting in God to be with you on your journey. As well as being a story of goals set, hard work required to reach goals, faith in, as well as love for each other, and trust in God, it is a story of faith, of a joyful multifaceted life, and can offer success toward a poverty to plenty lifestyle.

BEAUTIFUL, FRIGHTENING, AND SILENT
The debut novel by critically acclaimed Horror Author, Jennifer Anne Gordon

Winner Kindle Book Award for Best Horror/Suspense 2020

Adam, a young alcoholic, slowly descends into madness while dealing with the psychological scars of childhood trauma which are reawakened when his son and wife die in a car accident that he feels he is responsible for. After a failed suicide attempt, and more group meetings that he can mention. Adam hears a rumor of a Haunted Island off the Coast of Maine, where “if someone wants it bad enough” they could be reunited with a lost loved one.

In his desperate attempt to connect with the ghost of his four-and-a half year old son, he decides to go there, to Dagger Island, desperate to apologize to, or be condemned by, his young son. Adam is not sure what he deserves or even which of these he wants more. While staying in a crumbling old boarding house, he becomes involved with a beautiful and manipulative ghost who has spent 60 years tormenting the now elderly man who was her lover, and ultimately her murderer. The three of them create a “Menage-a-Guilt” as they all come to terms with what it is that ties them so emotionally to their memories and their very “existence”. Beautiful, Frightening, and Silent is a poetic fever dream of grief, love, and the terrifying ways that obsession can change who we are.

Praise for Jennifer Anne Gordon:

“This book is dark, twisted, and lyrical. This story starts with grief. I felt so deeply for Adam and what he has experienced through the loss of his family and the guilt that follows him since the accident. This book is painful to read, but it also continuously gave me the feeling of running towards something. The story kept me on my toes sitting right between the real world and fantasy paranormal so that I was never sure where we would go next. There are twists and turns throughout that left me surprised each time while at the same time feeling like there was nowhere else for the story to go.”, Kassie Romo, Reviewer for Reedsy

“This book is nothing that I expected and everything I wanted.  It kept breaking my heart and devouring every word until the very last line,” Russell Nohelty USA Today Bestseller
