Sourcebooks and Sesame Workshop to Publish Heroes Wear Masks to Support Families through Back-to-School Season

0

As schools and day care centers reopen, more than eight million preschoolers and kindergarteners will need to wear face masks during the day. Young children may find the new guidelines put in place because of COVID-19 strange and intimidating, but Elmo and his Sesame Street friends are here to help!

Heroes Wear Masks: Elmo’s Super Adventure is a new picture book from Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational media organization behind Sesame Street, that will help children manage back-toschool anxiety and understand the changes they’ll face in their classrooms and playrooms.

“One of the wonderful things about the Sesame Street Muppets is how powerfully kids identify with them. When they see their friend Elmo adjusting to something new, and a little scary—like wearing a mask to school—they realize that they can do it too,” said Karen Halpenny, Sesame Workshop’s editorial director for North America media products and publishing. “We’re thrilled to work with Sourcebooks to get this special book to families—we hope it helps ease their back-to-school transitions in this difficult time.”

In Heroes Wear Masks, children will see Elmo getting ready to head back to school, with some changes to his morning routine. Things are a little different when Elmo gets to school too: their Sesame Street friend will adopt—and adapt to—some of the safety measures kids will experience themselves, including:

• Wearing a mask
• Feeling anxious about leaving home
• Washing hands frequently • Social distancing—not being able to give hugs or high-fives to friends
• Temperature checks
• New classroom seating arrangements

“We are so excited to work with our extraordinary partner Sesame Workshop in bringing forth a story that can spark playful learning and offer comfort to families and children facing a new sense of normalcy,” said Karen Shapiro, publishing manager for Sourcebooks Wonderland.

The book will also feature tips for parents and caregivers, including language they can use with young children around handwashing, face masks, back-to-school anxiety, and other ways to stay healthy. Heroes Wear Masks reminds readers that it’s SUPER to help everyone stay healthy!

For more support, parents can find videos, articles, and games on the Sesame Street: Caring for Each Other hub (sesamestreet.org/caring). Created to meet families’ changing needs during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s regularly updated with free resources designed to help caregivers provide comfort, manage anxiety, create routines, and foster playful learning at home.

BEHIND THE WORDS::: IRENE HANNON

Behind the Words with Irene Hannon

Welcome Irene Hannon, we’re excited to have you on Reader’s Entertainment. First, tell our readers a bit about yourself.  Where you’re from, where you live? Is writing your full-time job?

I was born in Missouri, and except for a few years as a child in Atlanta, have always lived here. Yes, writing is my full-time job now—but for many years I juggled it with a career in corporate America. As I rose into the executive ranks, however, my corporate job left me no time for writing. So, I had to make a choice between the two. Walking away from a job that one of the villains in my suspense novels would kill for was difficult, but I don’t miss the rush hour commute, the corporate politics, or the 24/7 on-call nature of my job. Plus, it was only after I left and could devote full time to my books that my writing career took off and I began to hit bestseller lists. So, no regrets!

How long have you been writing?

Forever. Seriously, I think writing, like any other talent, is a gift. So, I’ve been writing since I was old enough to pick up a pen and form words. But I like to tell people that I made my professional writing debut at age ten, when I was one of the honorees in a complete-the-story contest conducted by a national children’s magazine.

Give readers a look at a typical writing day.

My workday is always very full. I begin in the morning by checking social media. Then I review and edit the work I wrote the previous day. After that, I move on to new writing. I write until I meet my page count for the day. Sometimes that happens before dinner, sometimes it doesn’t. So, I’m often back at my desk after dinner. Also, somewhere in the midst of writing, I have to handle the business and marketing side of writing. For example, this morning I got little writing done because I did a Zoom interview with a TV channel in the Netherlands. That was fun—but the writing time has to be made up. So, I expect I’ll be at my desk late tonight!

Tell us about your latest release? Where the idea came from? Perhaps some fun moments, or not so fun moments?

Point of Danger is Book 1 in my Triple Threat series, which features three sisters who are involved in truth-seeking professions that put them in the line of fire. To some degree, this storyline came from current events—but I had no idea when I was writing it almost two years ago how much more topical it would become. I can’t say more without giving the plot away, but the parallels to some of the things happening right now are uncanny.

Could you share one detail from your current release with readers that they might not find in the book? Perhaps a juicy bit of back-story, or something only you know about a character.

Unlike some writers who often toss out scenes during their revising process, I write tight. So readers know as much about my characters as I do! I can tell you, though, that the epilogue was a bit…shall we say….steamier in the original draft until one of my editors asked me to rein it in a bit. I complied—but I did write this note in the margin to her: “Party pooper! Ha, ha, just kidding. I toned it down.” It’s still wildly romantic, though!

Who has been the most difficult character for you to write? Why?

The villains in Trapped and Thin Ice were very hard to write because they were so twisted. Most of my villains have redeeming qualities, but these two had serious psychological issues that made them very bad people. Delving deep into their point of view was very, very scary—and I took readers along with me to that dark place. Let me be clear, though, that I don’t write overall dark books. There are always touches of humor, and readers end up uplifted by the end of the story.

If you could be one of your characters for a day which character would it be? Why?

Honestly, I love being me and wouldn’t trade places with any of my characters—especially the ones in my suspense novels. As I always tell people, after a few scary situations during my research, I’ve discovered that I much prefer my suspense between the covers of a book! But I wouldn’t mind trading places with Jeannette Mason from Driftwood Bay (one of my Hope Harbor contemporary romance novels) for a day, because she runs a lavender farm and tearoom—and I always had a secret desire to own a tearoom!

All writers are readers. Are there any particular authors that have influenced how you write and, if so, how have they influenced you?

Every author I read influences me, because I’m constantly learning and trying to improve my craft. That’s actually one of the downsides to being an author. It’s hard to read for pleasure when you’re analyzing every word and every scene!

Do you have a secret talent readers would be surprised by?

It’s not super secret, but I do sing. I’ve been fortunate to play the leading role in quite a few community musical theater productions, including Brigadoon, South Pacific, Oklahoma, The King and I, and Anything Goes—to name a few.

Your favorite go to drink or food when the world goes crazy!

There’s a French bakery near my house that has amazing almond croissants. They’re great comfort food. And any chocolate pastry is comforting!

What is the one question you never get ask at interviews, but wish you did? Ask and answer it.

After sixty novels and countless interviews, I think I’ve been asked every question in the book! But the one question that always bugs me—not from interviewers, but from friends and acquaintances—is this: “Are you still writing?” As if this is just a hobby…and an easy one at that. I think they assume the words just flow onto the page and after I play at my laptop for a couple of hours I have the rest of the day free. I always want to say to them, “Yes, I’m still writing—and this is hard work.” As one writer said, at the end of the day he’s as tired as if he’s been digging ditches for eight hours. Creating complex characters and intriguing plot lines, then weaving all the pieces together into a coherent story, is mentally taxing. Is the work satisfying? Absolutely. But it’s not easy. Because if it was, as Nora Roberts says, everyone would do it!

Thank you so much for joining us today, Irene!

Sourcebooks Honors the Late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg with 2021 Calendar — Calendar Will Benefit Causes RBG Believed in and Supported Throughout Her Life

Sourcebooks, the largest woman-owned publisher in North America, is honoring the legacy of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg with the 2021 The Legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg Wall Calendar: Her Words of Hope, Equality, and Inspiration—A yearlong tribute to the notorious RBG, which will be available November 1, 2020.

“Justice Ginsburg was an inspiration to women and girls across the country and the world. We are deeply saddened by her passing,” said Dominique Raccah, Sourcebooks publisher and CEO. “We wanted to celebrate her life and legacy. Within one day, an idea from a member of our design team has turned into this tribute to an icon of the women’s rights movement that we hope will empower girls and women during this challenging time.”

The 12-month wall calendar is a tribute that includes breathtaking and dynamic art and the most moving and memorable quotes from Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s groundbreaking career.

“We are honored to showcase 13 different female artists with diverse backgrounds and art styles in our calendar,” said Kelly Lawler, creative director for adult & YA titles. “Each of these women paid tribute to Ruth Bader Ginsburg in their own way through their art, and collectively these pieces are a powerful reminder of the hero and role model RBG became to all of us.”

Sourcebooks will donate half of the profits from sales of the calendar to causes that the late Justice believed in and supported throughout her life.

“Justice Ginsburg once said, ‘Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you,’” Raccah said. “We invite others to join us in our goal of raising at least $250,000 this year for groups and organizations that were close to the late justice’s heart through purchase of the calendar. Her incredible work on behalf of women’s rights is a legacy that should also be a call to action today.”

Sourcebooks has created a number of bestselling calendars and planners and is the publisher of branded and licensed calendars with groups including the National Park Foundation and the History Channel.

Murder at Kingscote – A Gilded Newport Mystery #8
by Alyssa Maxwell

In late nineteenth-century Newport, Rhode Island, journalist Emma Cross discovers the newest form of transportation has become the newest type of murder weapon . . .

On a clear July day in 1899, the salty ocean breeze along Bellevue Avenue carries new smells of gasoline and exhaust as Emma, now editor-in-chief of the Newport Messenger, covers Newport’s first-ever automobile parade. But the festive atmosphere soon turns to shock as young Philip King drunkenly swerves his motorcar into a wooden figure of a nanny pushing a pram on the obstacle course.

That evening, at a dinner party hosted by Ella King at her magnificent Gothic-inspired “cottage,” Kingscote, Emma and her beau Derrick Andrews are enjoying the food and the company when Ella’s son staggers in, obviously still inebriated. But the disruption is nothing compared to the urgent shouts of the coachman. Rushing out, they find the family’s butler pinned against a tree beneath the front wheels of Philip’s motorcar, close to death.

At first, the tragic tableau appears to be a reckless accident—one which could ruin Philip’s reputation. But when Emma later receives a message informing her that the butler bullied his staff and took advantage of young maids, she begins to suspect the scene may have been staged and steers the police toward a murder investigation. But while Emma investigates the connections between a competing heir for the King fortune, a mysterious child, an inmate of an insane asylum, and the brutal boxing rings of Providence, a killer remains at large—with unfinished business to attend to . . .

SPECIAL FEATURE: Falling in Love with Author Betsy St. Amant

FALLING IN LOVE with BETSY ST. AMANT

Talking with Betsy about what she loves about fall……..

Fall is hands-down my most favorite time of year. It could be partly due to how in Louisiana, summer is about five months long. The temps here begin to rise into the 90’s in mid/late May and hold steady until much later in the year. So for us, Fall is brief. It doesn’t start getting cooler again until late October. Whenever Fall decides to show its lovely face, I’m waiting with open arms.

Fall is magical. Beyond the start of the holiday season, beyond the pumpkin-spice lattes and the brisk winds and the chance to wear cute boots, there are the leaves. Be still my heart!

After my ex-husband initiated a divorce, I went to a women’s retreat in the Colorado mountains and had my first encounter with Aspens. Their golden leaves rustled in the breeze against pristine white snowbanks and I was smitten. Something about those Aspens, waving their branches and whispering promises of hope, rooted deep inside me. They were so joyful. God used them to bring healing to my battered spirit. I thought, if they could do their job on that mountainside and bring Him glory no matter what, well, so could I—broken heart and all.

It turns out there is a word for the glorious sound of rustling leaves—Psithurism.

The trees continued to teach me lessons years later—such as how beautiful it is to let dead things go. “Ruska”, or the process of leaves turning those beautiful colors, is a lovely concept. Too often we hold on to the past or to things that need to float away. The leaves teach that in style. I took their advice, let go of the past, and married a handsome drummer (who also enjoys the outdoors and hangs hammocks in trees for me) I found a new season in life.

My daughter used to roll her eyes when I’d get so excited as we drove past a grove of trees boasting crisp burgundy, mauve, and golden leaves. Now, she helps point them out to me while we gleefully exclaim together “look! a happy tree!” (sometimes, there might or might not be baby talk toward these tall, leafy guys!)

All the seasons bring their own unique joys, but me? I’ll be here, forever falling for Fall.

Sheila’s Book Review: Tempting Her Best Friend by Gina L. Maxwell

0

This is a hit or miss book for a lot of people. It’s happy but predictable.

Tempting Her Best Friend By Gina L Maxwell

I give this 4 stars out of 5

The writing is good and it has a strong start. Alyssa would love to see her friendship with Dillon morph into something romantic. They’re great friends and with that comes the fear of changing that already wonderful relationship.

The story changes POV between her and him which I do like.

Once they get to Vegas though, the heroine starts to question those really strong feelings and the story does feel a little contrived at this point.

But, you do get a happy ever after as romance novels promise and you are happy when they get it all figured out.

ABOUT:

Alyssa Miller is tired of waiting for her next-door neighbor to see her as more than just his best friend. Ready to let off some steam, she heads to Las Vegas for a romance book convention where, if she’s lucky, she’ll get down and dirty with one of the sexy cover models.

Dillon Alexander doesn’t do commitment-especially not where his best friend is concerned. She deserves a man who can give her the world, not damaged goods. But when he realizes Alyssa intends to have a one-night stand on her vacation, he hauls ass after her to make sure he’s the one to scratch her itch.

Neither of them expects their explosive chemistry to burn hotter than the lights on the strip, but with a little help from Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, a flamboyant matchmaker, and TSA, what happens in Vegas might not stay in Vegas…

FALLING IN LOVE WITH FALL WITH DWAYNE CLAYDEN

0

Special Feature

Falling in Love with Fall by Dwayne Clayden

I love fall. Summer is great, and I don’t like when suddenly one morning and it is cool outside. A switch was flicked. But fall has its own qualities. Fall to me is football. From the time I was eight or nine, I played football with my friends in Bowness Park. Running through the leaves, crunching under my feet as we played until the park lights came on. I’d arrive home, scratched and bruises and often having had at least one bleeding nose, and mom would say, “Did you have fun.” I’d reply, “Yes.” She’d say, “Good. Now get cleaned up for bed.” No coddling there!

Then into bantam football when I was twelve, through high school, junior football and men’s leagues. I seldom passed an opportunity to play football. If you called on a Saturday morning and said let’s go for a run or go to the gym, I’d find an excuse and say ‘no.’ If you called and said we were playing football from sunup to sunset, I’d be in.

After my playing days, I coached football. For six years I coached teams my son, Matt, played on. I rarely coached him, which was probably good for our relationship! But in the last couple of years we bonded over football. He trusted me as a coach, and I certainly trusted him as a player. When I needed a big play, I knew Matt would come through. Matt graduated high school and his career ended, but mine continued. This will be the first year in the past fifteen I’m not coaching. Covid19 has seen to that.

There is nothing better than a late September night at the football field, under the lights, with a slight chill in the air, the odor of leaves, and pine needles, and attending a football game. Whether as a player or a coach, I love those nights. As a player, I’d say to my teammates, it’s a glorious night for football. As a coach, I used the same line. The greatest thrill was in 2015 when we won the city championship in November, under the lights on a frosty night. It was a 13-0 championship season.

I loved the challenge as a player and it seemed the farther we were into fall, the better I played. When coaching, I loved the chess game challenge of thinking four or five moves ahead of the opposition coaches. I played offense and defence, so I was almost coaching against myself, thinking what would I do in this situation if I was the opposition offensive coach, then countering with a defence.

It’s also the incredible beauty. The leaves changing to brilliant red and golden yellow. The cool yet refreshing air. Birds flying south, Canadian Geese honking overhead.

As I write this, I’m sitting on the deck at the cabin, surrounded by beautiful colors, eight-degree Celsius temperature, crisp air and loving every second. I’ll spend the day out here, editing a novel. I may need a hot chocolate or two to warm my fingers. But there is no place I’d rather be. I love fall.
