0

A handsome rake, forbidden romance, espionage and a beautiful woman.  Yes! Yes! Yes! Get a little taste of historical romance and hang on for the wild ride with A Code of the Heart by Jacki Delecki!

A Code of the Heart

Synopsis:

Miss Amelia Bonnington has been in love with her childhood hero since she was eleven years old… or so she thought until a not-so proper impassioned and unyielding kiss from the not-so honorable and equally disreputable Lord Derrick Brinsley, gave her reason to question the feelings of the heart.

Lord Brinsley, shunned from society for running off with his brother’s fiancée, hasn’t cared about or questioned his lack of acceptance until meeting the beguiling Amelia Bonnington. One passionate moment with the fiery Miss Bonnington has him more than willing to play by society’s rules to possess the breathtaking, red-haired woman.

Amelia unwittingly becomes embroiled in espionage when she stumbles upon a smuggling ring in the modiste shop of her good friend. To prove her French friend’s innocence, she dangerously jumps into the fray, jeopardizing more than her life.

On undercover assignment to prevent the French from stealing the Royal Navy’s deadly weapon, Derrick must fight to protect British secrets from falling into the hands of foreign agents, and the chance at love with the only woman capable of redeeming him.

Excerpt:

Prologue

Edworth House Party

Christmas Eve, 1802

Amelia Bonnington braced herself as the crowd bumped and pushed, straining to get close to His Highness. The crème of society shoved and elbowed, politely-of-course, since one would never want to be accused of bad manners.

The Prince Regent stood on a small platform elaborately decorated with heavy boughs of greenery and red velvet, matching the Christmas décor of the massive ballroom. Hundreds of beeswax candles burned. No expense had been spared for the house party celebrating his royal visit.

Amelia had no desire to be part of the prince’s circle; they were a ghastly group who were only interested in themselves and their own pleasure.

She sucked in the little air left in the room and pushed, courteously-of-course, toward the door. The crowd and the heat were unbearable. She wasn’t one to swoon, but with the thick mix of perfume and the hot bodies, she felt tonight might be her first. She, one of the steadiest women, felt unsteady and unsafe. The last days of upheaval must have had a greater effect on her than she had wanted to believe.

Her whole world had been turned upside down and twisted sideways at this house party. In the last two days, her friends had been poisoned and kidnapped, and she had been ensnared in the French villain’s trap. But the deadly crisis had to be kept secret. Nothing must look out of the ordinary. No one outside the intelligence world ever know about the enemy’s threat to the Prince Regent’s life. The ball must go on.

Amelia looked over her shoulder for the closest exit, but the throng pushed her forward. She needed to escape from the packed room.

A gentleman used the chaos in the crowded room, to crash into her, to take liberties with her person. After spending the last four years in congested ballrooms, she fully recognized the scoundrel’s ploy. His heavy eyelids didn’t conceal his hungry eyes, focused down her décolletage. As his eyes remained fixated on her breasts, he grabbed her elbow, pretending to help her when in fact he intended to pull her close against his hefty, malodorous body.

His reek of stale alcohol and sour sweat constricted her stomach and burned her throat. She pulled her arm away from his grasp, repulsed by the wetness seeping through his gloves. “Sir, release me this instant.”

She was about to dig her heel into the supposed gentleman’s fat toe when suddenly a space opened around her and a smell of fresh lime soap surrounded her.

The perspiring man stared behind her. His slack mouth and his blood-shot eyes widened in fear.

She recognized Lord Brinsley’s scent without needing to turn; he was an impossibly difficult, yet irresistibly appealing man. His deep, velvety voice flitted down her skin like a caress. “Miss Amelia, may I escort you away from this mob?”

Relief and something much more potent buzzed all her nerve endings. She turned quickly and found herself pressed against the broad chest of the man she had been forced to conspire with to save her friends.

She hastily straightened herself. “I never thought I’d be happy to see you.” She refused to be like all the other women who fawned for his slightest glance.

He lifted an eyebrow and the corner of his mouth in that sardonic way she always found irritating. He was too big, too handsome, and too confident for her to find him irresistible. She’d never let him have the satisfaction of knowing she found him…almost irresistible.

Misleading Information Causes Readers to Pay More on Amazon

0
Many Books Listed with Inflated Prices

Books at twice the price … only available here!

Why would a book on Amazon sell for $42.19 on one page and $19.70 on another when they are the same product and same format?

Questionable Pricing?
Questionable Pricing?

Why would Amazon allow a third party seller to tell its customers that a book is “only available from third-party sellers” when it is not? One can argue that sellers should be able to sell their items for whatever price they want.  But, when they double the normal price of a book and then give misleading information to customers saying they are the only sellers of the book, it feels like fraud.  It is at least misleading to customers.

Only Available from third-party sellers?
Only Available from third-party sellers?

Amazon is reluctant to address this problem.  Not only did they not reply to our query for this article, but when contacted via email on several occasions they would not reply to a customer query either.  The email was completely ignored by Amazon, just as it was by the third-party seller.

E-mails are relatively easy to ignore, so there were several phone calls placed to customer service regarding this issue and from there transferred to management.  Although it was agreed that the listing shouldn’t be separate from the one Amazon put up, no one could explain how or why this happened.  There were only assurances that it would be looked into and addressed.  The page with the misleading information remains there to date.

There are inherent problems with the customer service route when you have a pre-sale problem with a third-party seller.  First of all, the only process available is the A-to-Z Guarantee claim, which can only be used after purchase.  Then, there are not clear paths for customer service to take when the problem appears unethical in nature as opposed to a mistake on the website like a misspelling or wrong picture. But, the customer service person is encouraged to say whatever gets him/her a positive survey after the call, so there’s lots of talk and little action happening to ensure that readers are not being mislead.

How does this affect sales?

Are these really the only sellers for this book on Amazon?
Are these really the only sellers for this book on Amazon?

Though a reader is likely to realize when a book it twice the normal price, it can cause negative feelings that the reader may associate with the author or publisher as opposed to the seller.  The reader can always choose to shop elsewhere, but once on the Amazon site, with so many choices of books to read, it can be easier to just choose another book as opposed to leaving the site and looking elsewhere.  So, can it affect sales? Yes.  By how much, it’s likely negligible in measure of money, but readers who feel an author or publisher is price gouging them, that is something that could damage an overall brand or reputation.

How does this affect readers?

Readers are savvy online shoppers as a rule.  So, it could be said that most readers would realize that a book that normally sells for less than $20 must have something special about it if it is selling for over twice that.  But, there’s no indication that it does.  We reached out the one of sellers selling the book for over $40 asking if this was signed or had some additional value to it not noted on the Amazon page.  They never answered.

For readers who many not be savvy when it comes to online shopping, the landing page for this inflated-cost book tells them this is the only place on Amazon they can purchase it.  If they want it, and they want it from Amazon, they are told that a limited number of third-party sellers are the only ones selling it.

After a brief survey of casual readers asking them to look at the page and tell us whether or not this book is available on Amazon, we received replies saying it was not.  That this book is only available from those sellers listed on that page.  Some responding to the survey became angry, knowing they were being misled.

Fear City by F. Paul Wilson is not the only book being targeted for inflated sales by third-party sellers.  There are many.  Some have the notice saying it is only available through certain vendors and some say nothing, but do not include all vendors selling the book.

Many Books Listed with Inflated Prices
Many Books Listed with Inflated Prices

If you look carefully, you’ll note that the books being sold at twice the price list the book, first by the author name, then the book title, which is not the standard practice of Amazon.com.  Amazon.com normally lists the title of the book, then the author and all sellers selling this book are listed in one place. We’ve seen other creative ways sellers list books when they don’t want it listed under the ISBN.

Third-Party Vendor Problems

Third-party vendor problems are not new to Amazon.com.  In 2013 manufacturers complained about unauthorized dealers of products.  One problem is that Amazon has a process in place to deal with third-party sellers only AFTER the purchase.  There isn’t a system in place to notify Amazon if there is a problem prior to purchase.  Of course, Amazon gets a portion of sales from these third-party sellers, so there’s not much incentive to stopping unethical practices, or even simple mistakes, prior to purchase.

Third-party vendors appear to be regulated only after a purchase.  You can’t count on a vendor’s reviews either.  It is relatively easy to purchase 4 and 5 star reviews.  It was suspicious to see products being sold at twice the price, but gaining 4 and 5 star reviews.

Amazon Review Can Be Bought
Amazon Reviews Can Be Bought

The point is, third-party sellers on Amazon need more pre-sale regulation and customer interface options that Amazon monitors when a pre-sale issue is reported.

Is It A Lie?

Is it misleading, or an actual lie for a seller to note on their page that something is only available through them and select vendors, when they must know the book is available on Amazon, even from Amazon?

Amazon could simply make it a rule that sellers must include the ISBN of a book if it has one.  Allowing ASINs instead of an ISBN when one is available causes customer confusion as multiple books are listed without a clear explanation as to what the difference is between them.

Does it Matter?

The potential to de-fraud should be a great concern for everyone.  Giving an inflated price while also telling customers they are the only sellers is unethical, but whether or not it is illegal seems unclear. Certainly “Buyer Beware” is the call to action in this digital age where questionable practices are overlooked or ignored.

If you know readers who buy books from Amazon you may want to suggest that they only purchase books with ISBNs or that clearly show they are sold by Amazon itself.  Otherwise they could be paying too much.

After the Fall Book Review

Dr. Laura Nelson loses everything After the Fall

It’s not long before the first murder and you know exactly who is behind it. It’s not really a mystery, though the main character has some history she’s afraid to reveal that remains a mystery for a while and that was good. This is a thriller, filled with suspense and realistic characters. The author is a family physician and the book reflects a deep knowledge of the medical field. You feel that the medical details could have leapt right off any medical chart it’s so real and exact. I love well researched books, so this was a real treat for me.

After-the-Fall-midpoint-e1419975574306
The characters feel so real that at one point, as they were telling Laura she’d never be able to do surgery again I actually got very emotional and near tears. The main character’s dedication to her job, to all she does to help people, to her relationships, her family, they all feel so deep-seeded that you immediately feel a strong connection to her.
The villain may not be a mystery, but he adds so much to the story as it grows more and more complex. You even feel you can relate to him on some level. I understood his desperation and it was propelled by the love of a woman. This is such a well-crafted villain and he gets a lot of stage time in the book.
The overall story isn’t just that Laura took a fall and can’t be a surgeon. That’s just the first part of how she ends up in the crosshairs of a killer. This brings you inside a pharmaceutical company creating a break-through drug that could really make a difference in the lives of millions. Unfortunately, one of the scientists on the project, a beautiful Middle Eastern woman named Adawia will be sent back home to Iraq and forced to marry a man she does not love. The time period of the book puts us in a Hussain Iraq, when it was even more dangerous and horrible to be a woman. You don’t want her to go back either. And it is her lover who is bent on saving her, at the cost of other people’s lives.

Dr. Laura Nelson loses everything After the Fall
Dr. Laura Nelson loses everything After the Fall

The story is complex in a way I appreciate. It’s intelligent and well written giving all the characters layers and intricacies that keep those final chapters moving fast and hard to put down.

SFWA To Allow Indie Authors

0

logo-newWith newly amended bylaws, the SFWA – Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America organization will now be accepting self-published and indie authors. In the past, authors whose works were published by small publishers or self-published as an independent author (indie) were excluded from obtaining membership in the organization.

The SFWA is: “SFWA is a professional organization for authors of science fiction, fantasy and related genres. SFWA informs, supports, promotes, defends and advocates for its members. We host the prestigious Nebula Awards, assist members in legal disputes with publishers, and administer benevolent funds for authors facing medical or legal expenses.  Novice authors benefit from our Information Center and the well-known Writer Beware site.”

Steven Gould, president of SFWA said in a statement: “Writers write. Professional writers get paid a decent amount for what they write. For the past five years it’s been apparent that there are ways to earn that decent amount that were not being covered by our previous qualification standards. Though these changes took a substantial amount of time, I’m grateful to everyone who worked toward this end.”

The updated bylaws will take effect on March 1st and authors can review the new membership standards at their website. Applications from smaller publishers, and indie authors will also be accepted at that time.

Libraries Taking Financial Hit from eBooks

0

download (2)Libraries were on board with the eRevolution quite early, offering ebook downloads to their patrons. They embraced the Internet and in many communities are still the public’s only link to the global web. American libraries are also the fast becoming the first victims of eBooks.

Each community supports their libraries in different ways:  with federal money, state money and local money usually via a tax levy. Funding is based on many factors including the amount of books in a library, the amount of card holders that library has, and the size of the community served. Of course, these factors vary widely, depending on the state in which the library is located.

The budget for a library is usually determined annually, and a percentage of their money is generated by late fees on books. While this money is a small amount of the operating budget, it does help purchase new books, both print and digital, support children’s programs and many other things.

With digital books, they automatically expire so there are no late fees associated with them. Also, each publisher has their own set of rules regarding the cost of digital books they sell to libraries, the amount of check outs they can have per title, and dictate how many titles a library can have and which authors they are willing to let libraries have in their collections. These titles also expire at this end of one year forcing the library to re-purchase them.

All this adds up to quite a significant loss of revenue for libraries. Many libraries are now finding that it costs more money to purchase a digital book than a print one.

To offset these costs some libraries are now charging non-residents for a library card. The GoodeReader.com in a recent article noted that: “Brooklyn Public Library charges $50, Charlotte-Mecklenburg County $45,  Fairfax County $27,  New Orleans Public $50 and Orange County Library System $125.”

Other libraries are turning to their communities for additional support. Libraries offer books – digital and print – to many communities that otherwise would not have access. Hopefully, publishers will determine a better system for library purchases and distribution and the communities these libraries serve will see the value in supporting them.

Suspense and Intrigue Follow in: After the Fall by Patricia Gussin – An Interview

0

Patricia Gussin’s new novel After the Fall is a brilliantly written, well researched thriller novel that looks at obsession, loyalty and what we are willing to do for love.Tell us the synopsis of your book.

After-the-Fall-midpoint-e1419975574306

Reader’s Entertainment:  Tell us the synopsis of your book.

 Patricia :

In “After the Fall” Dr. Laura Nelson falls on the ice, tragically ending her career as a surgeon. Soon after, she accepts a position as Vice President for Research in a large pharmaceutical company. But as she works to finalize the approval of the company’s groundbreaking new drug, her efforts are thwarted by Jake Harter, a malicious FDA employee. Jake is obsessed with the beautiful Iraqi scientist who discovered the drug and when the drug is approved, the woman will collect a substantial bonus and return to Iraq. Once there, she will replace her dying father, the lead scientist in Saddam Hussein’s bioweapons program. While the Iraqis will stop at nothing to get their young scientist back, Jake Harter will stop at nothing to keep her, even if it means killing Laura.

Reader’s Entertainment:   What do you feel is the most unique aspect of your story?

 Patricia :

Laura is an accomplished, respective transplant surgeon whose career is shattered when she falls on the ice. When she takes a position in the pharmaceutical industry, she expects to face new challenges, but she does not expect a threat to her life. “After the Fall” is a blend of medicine and family and career and long buried secrets that implode in a terrifying intersection of good and evil.

Reader’s Entertainment:  Tell us about your main character(s).

 Patricia :

Laura Nelson was a medical student and young mother in “Shadow of Death”; a surgeon and mother of five kids in “Twisted Justice”; chief of surgery and the mother of teens in “Weapon of Choice”, and now a pharmaceutical executive in “After the Fall.” Laura has grown along with her children in the quartet of books, but she’s still strong, resilient and compassionate. And, in “After the Fall”, she comes full circle with her past and she faces the future with love on the horizon.

Reader’s Entertainment:  What genre(s) is this and who do you think will enjoy reading it? (type of audience)

 Patricia :

Readers of psychological thrillers, especially those who appreciate the infinite depth of family dynamics and realize the terrifying dimensions of the psychopathic mind. Audiences who enjoy medical suspense and those who’d like an inside look at the world of pharmaceutical development will enjoy this one.

Reader’s Entertainment:  Have you received any feedback on it yet, and if so, what was it?

  Patricia :

“After the Fall’ has had some great reviews, including a starred review in Publishers Weekly and a wonderful review in Booklist. I have had a lot of feedback from readers and reviewers when they realize that “After the Fall” will be the last in the four-book Laura Nelson series, that the young medical student starting out in Detroit is now the vice president of the third largest pharmaceutical company in the world and living in Philadelphia.

Reader’s Entertainment:  Tell us something about yourself that most of your readers may not know.

 Patricia :

Many readers do know that I am a physician and the mother of seven and that’s why I focus on medical careers and family dynamics in my thrillers. But many may not know that I have had firsthand experience as a vice president in a major pharmaceutical company. That’s why I can bring a huge degree of realism into the setting of “After the Fall.”

Reader’s Entertainment:     What’s next for you?

 Patricia :

Laura’s been through so much in the past twenty-five years of her life that she deserves a more secure, placid future. Next for me, will be a younger protagonist, perhaps one of Laura’s twin daughters, or perhaps both of them.

Reader’s Entertainment:      Where can people interact with you and find out more about you and your books?

 Patricia :

I am active on Facebook. www.facebook.com/patricia.gussin and visit my website   www.patriciagussin.com and twitter as well. You can find lots of information on my publisher’s website   www.oceanviewpub.com

SNEAK PEEK: Over The Line by K.C. Stewart

OverTheLineOver the Line
by K.C. Stewart

Novelette Prequel, Adirondack Pack, Book 0.5

The truth is in the evidence. Follow your nose, keep an ear to the ground and don’t believe everything you hear. Tyson Cartwright has always known who he was and becoming the Adirondack Pack’s Enforcer was the goal from the very start. He loves his job, but not today. Someone in the pack isn’t who they say they are. It isn’t the first time and it won’t be the last that Tyson has to rid the pack of a spy. These are the people he calls his friends and family and one of them is lying to him. His gut has an idea but is it just because he doesn’t like the man his sister has taken up with or is there something more to Jack Naughton? For Jenny’s sake he better know for sure it’s Jack before dispensing justice because once a wolf goes over the line, there is no coming back.

CHAPTER ONE

There wasn’t much that could put that look on Owen’s face. In all their years together as quasi-brothers, best friends and pack mates, Tyson had only seen that particular look a handful of times and he knew there would be no time off for him in the foreseeable future. As pack enforcer it was Tyson’s job to find the reason for the look on his Alpha’s face and bring justice. He was protector, detective, judge and jury. His hands were bloodier than anyone else’s in the Adirondack Park and maybe even in the state of New York. Justice often meant death because once a wolf went over the line, there was no coming back.

Tyson could see the line. He knew where it stood and where those in his pack stood in relation to it. Being feared, and often times hated, was just one of the downfalls of the job. Neither of which bothered him.

Owen was alpha. He was the most dominate wolf in the pack and that meant he was the one they relied on. The one they turned to for help. The one who would protect them with everything he had. The pack was his family’s legacy but that didn’t mean it was his birthright, he was just right for the job. When someone was born to do something, nothing—not even being an outcast, could stop them from being who they were meant to be.

Tyson was meant to bring justice and protect the pack.

Owen was meant to lead.

“I can tell by your expression that you have good news for me,” Tyson strolled into Owen’s office and took one of the seats in front of the massive oak desk.

Owen glanced up from the newspaper he had spread out. Usually a remark like that would have gotten a rise out of him but Owen was too far lost in thought to do much more than show mild interest. Whatever it was had caused his best friend to suppress the man and allowed the alpha wolf to take charge.

“Just tell me,” he said this time.

A snarl was just barely being held back. “There was another one.” For a guy who usually spoke in low, soft tones he knew how to add venom when needed. Tyson reached across the desk and turned the newspaper around. Another body ravaged by animals. But it wasn’t just an animal that had torn and bit into the flesh of the dead man, it was one of them: a werewolf, shifter, lycanthrope. The killing was a message, just not one the human population could read. The message, like all the rest, was for them.

Humans are fodder. Nothing more, nothing less.

A radical group of wolf shifters who liked to call themselves “Canidae,” believed that between the two halves of the lycanthrope soul, the wolf is the stronger half and they should lean towards the way of the animal. Their kind had evolved. At one point, they had leaned heavily on the wolf side of their instincts but in the world as it was today, they relied on the human instead.

“Canidae?” he asked but only for confirmation.

“What do you think?”

That would be a yes. “What are you thinking, Owen? Obviously something if you called me in here.”

“I haven’t wanted to make waves with Canidae.”

“I know.” Everything Owen did, he did for the good of the pack. Keeping his head down in this debate may have been seen as submissive by some, but Tyson knew it had kept many of them alive.

“I’ve kept middle of the line even though I think they are a bunch of ass sniffing dogs who only want a reason to kill freely. This though,” he tapped the newspaper, “this is their way of telling me to pick a side. Three dead in the last month. We can’t have that. Many more and the police will start connecting the dots.”

Government intervention was the very last thing any of them wanted. The government knew about their kind, unlike the rest of the human population. They had yet to do any more than make idle threats. However, giving them bodies, gave them a reason to make nice on those threats.

“I think we have a mole. Someone is feeding Canidae leaders pack information. I’ve been talking to the White Mountain pack and they were having the same problems. Turns out, someone from their pack was in Canidae and they were slowly gathering followers. I don’t want to believe any of ours would go against me like that but…”

“Yeah, but.” Tyson saw just how honest and honorable wolves could be. He had no doubts that there were some in their pack that were capable of espionage and brutal human killings.

Owen folded up the paper and filed it in his desk, probably with all the other articles from the past year on animal killings and attacks. There was something else that was bothering him. Tyson saw anger and exhaustion in Owen’s face. Canidae was the cause behind the anger, but he never lost sleep over it.

“Everything ok?”

His laugh was half sigh. “No. Lee’s on her kick again.”

“Jesus,” he groaned. “After almost two years you’d think she would get it through that thick doctor scull of hers that you love her.”

“You’d think,” he agreed. “I can’t really blame her though. I quell the gossip when I hear it but it always gets back to her.”

“Those old hags can go fuck themselves. So she can’t have kids. It’s not like it’s the end of the world.”

“No, just the end of my line.” He wasn’t bitter per say, but Tyson heard the accusation. They had been dancing around their mutual attraction ever since they were pups. Unable to have kids wasn’t a deal breaker for Owen but it was always there between them. They worked together as long as Lee couldn’t hear the gossip.

The clock in the corner of the room struck with three long, deep gongs. Both of them looked and waited for the sound to end. Tyson hated that clock. He needed to be going anyway. Jenny was expecting him soon. “What do you need of me?” He asked referring to the Canidae problem.

Owen looked him square in the face. “To do your job.”
