He’s still reeling after a series of earth-shattering events, so when a desperate woman hires Dodge Investigations to find her missing sister, the head-scratcher of a case is exactly the distraction Charlie and his steadfast partner, Wyrick, need. Two days prior, Rachel Dean disappeared without a trace from her locked-from-the-inside Dallas apartment, and every possible trail has gone cold.

Grappling with the fallout of her efforts to dismantle the shadowy organization Universal Theorem, Wyrick throws herself into her investigative work. Charlie knows his partner can handle herself, but when she uncovers a past connection that paints a target on her back, the threat of losing her hits Charlie hard. There’s nothing he wouldn’t do to keep Wyrick safe, but with the clock ticking on a victim they’ve yet to find, it’s only a matter of time before the cold-blooded killer leads them to a deadly end.

Magic of the Pony and Autobot Friendship with an All-New Comic Book Miniseries Debuting in April

By popular demand, IDW once again welcomes fans of all ages to the most imaginative comic book mashup of Hasbro creations ever with My Little Pony / Transformers II, a four-part monthly miniseries launching in April!

While using a modified Spacebridge to bring magic to Cybertron, the Decepticons end up unleashing a more powerful evil from Equestria than they ever could’ve imagined. Two worlds collide in the return of this hit crossover concept, with a first issue by writers James Asmus and Sam Maggs, and artists Jack Lawrence and Casey W. Coller!

“I can’t wait to jump back into this world of magical friendships that really is More than Meets the Eye,” says Maggs. “It’s such a blast coming up with the most fun (and downright weird) pairings of ponies and ‘bots, and I think fans of both series are going to be surprised at what’s we’ve got for them this second time around!”

“The first crossover was about as much fun as I’ve had in my writing career,” says Asmus. “I am hugely delighted that we’re not only doing a follow up, but getting to flip the script. In the first series, we got to tell really charming and fun stories by tossing the Autobots and Decepticons into the colorful, magical world of Equestria. But now, dragging dark magic and friendly ponies into the sci-fi world of Cybertron lets us play with brand new tones, toys, and team-ups!”

Editor Megan Brown says, “We are so excited to work with some amazingly talented writers and artists to bring this marvelous mashup back to comic stores! Just like the previous volume, many creators are contributing stories that are going to bring our favorite ponies to Cybertron and beyond, including returning writers James Asmus, Sam Maggs, Ian Flynn, and returning artists Jack Lawrence, Casey W. Coller, Priscilla Tramontano, and Tony Fleecs — all joined by some new, exciting faces! The creators on this series are exceptional, able to bridge the gap between Autobot and pony to make a colorful, vibrant world. We’re thrilled for everyone (and everypony!) to see what we have in store!”

BEHIND THE WORDS: Sarah Sundin Author of When Twilight Breaks

0

Welcome Sarah, we’re excited to have you on Reader’s Entertainment. First, tell our readers a bit about yourself.

Thank you so much for inviting me! I’m fascinated by the drama, daring, and romance of the World War II era, and I’ve written over a dozen novels set in that time period, including my latest novel, When Twilight Breaks, and the award-winning and bestselling Sunrise at Normandy series.

Is writing your full-time job?

For the past year and a half, it has been. I worked as a hospital pharmacist one day a week when my children were at home, but I quit after our daughter graduated from college. It’s been lovely to have plenty of time to write!

How long have you been writing?

Twenty years exactly. Unlike most writers, I didn’t plan a writing career but a pharmacy career. In 2000, a story idea hit me hard and wouldn’t let go. Since then, I haven’t been able to stop writing.

Briefly describe your writing day.

I am not a morning person. While I’m waiting for my coffee to kick in, I take care of emails, social media, and business-related work. Over lunch I read a research book. Then afternoon is writing time!

Tell us about your latest release.

Munich, 1938. Evelyn Brand is an American foreign correspondent determined to expose the tyranny in Nazi Germany. After brutality hits close, American graduate student Peter Lang uses his connections in the Nazi Party to feed information to Evelyn, pulling them deeper into danger as the world marches toward war.

What inspired this book?

A visit to Ellis Island, where I found records of my grandfather’s voyage home from Germany in 1936. I knew he studied in Germany, but it had never occurred to me that he studied in Hitler’s Germany. My grandfather was a professor of German . . . so I made Peter Lang a graduate student in German. Peter is not—I repeat not—my grandfather, but many parts of his career were inspired by my grandfather.

Could you share one detail from your current release with readers that they might not find in the book? Perhaps a juicy bit of back-story, or something only you know about a character?

It never made it into the story, but Peter’s mother was a suffragette. This woman is one of the reasons Peter is intrigued by Evelyn’s feistiness and isn’t put off by her independent streak. But of course, he’d like to bend that independence just a bit so he can be included in her life.

What has been your hardest scene to write? Any of your books

In my first novel, A Distant Melody, a character finds out some bad news that was very similar to news I’d faced a few years before. The first draft was incredibly dry, and I realized I hadn’t mined the emotions I’d felt personally. Because it hurt. I really had to force myself to dig deep in that scene, and now it’s one of my favorites. Since then, it’s been easier to force myself to write those painful scenes—and I have at least one that wrings me dry in each novel—because I know those are the scenes that have the most impact.

Who has been the most difficult character for you to write? Why?

Any character destined to die. When I’m outlining, it’s easy to assign characters to die—it’s necessary for the plot, for character development, for the mood, to show just how dangerous the situation is. But as I’m writing the rough draft, these doomed characters inevitably become some of my favorites. I begin arguing with myself, pleading for a stay of execution. But I know I have to do the dirty work and write the story. Sigh.

If you could be one of your characters for a day which character would it be? Why?

I would love to be Evelyn Brand because she’s my polar opposite. I’m reserved and cautious and always worried about following the rules. She’s bold and brave and hates to follow rules. For one day, it would be fun to have her relentless spirit.

Do you have a secret talent readers would be surprised by?

After ten years of filling out author questionnaires, I’m running out of these answers. My favorite reply is that I know how to jump on and off of a moving merry-go-round. As a college student, I worked as a ride operator at Knott’s Berry Farm. However, I haven’t tried it in…a few years. It might not end well.

Your favorite go to drink or food when the world goes crazy!

I do love my coffee and chocolate. However, I’ve found the best stress reliever for me is exercise, preferably outside. Since we have a new dog who is a walk-oholic, I’m getting lots of stress relief.

And what is your writing Kryptonite?

Interruptions. When I first started writing, my kids were little. If I wanted to write, I had to write anywhere and anytime. And I did. I wrote in the doctor’s waiting room and in the karate studio and on the soccer sidelines. But then I had four years of the empty nest and got spoiled by silence. This past year my husband retired early. It’s been, shall we say, a learning experience.

Sarah’s latest release WHEN TWILIGHT BREAKS releases tomorrow, Feb 2.
Munich, 1938. Evelyn Brand is an American foreign correspondent as determined to prove her worth in a male-dominated profession as she is to expose the growing tyranny in Nazi Germany. To do so, she must walk a thin line. If she offends the government, she could be expelled from the country–or worse. If she fails to truthfully report on major stories, she’ll never be able to give a voice to the oppressed–and wake up the folks back home.

In another part of the city, American graduate student Peter Lang is working on his PhD in German. Disillusioned with the chaos in the world due to the Great Depression, he is impressed with the prosperity and order of German society. But when the brutality of the regime hits close, he discovers a far better way to use his contacts within the Nazi party–to feed information to the shrewd reporter he can’t get off his mind.

This electric standalone novel from fan-favorite Sarah Sundin puts you right at the intersection of pulse-pounding suspense and heart-stopping romance.

Seth Rogen Releases First Book — YEARBOOK

0

Crown announced it will publish comedian, writer, actor, producer, and director Seth Rogen’s first book, YEARBOOK, on May 11, 2021, in hardcover and digital formats. An audio edition will be released simultaneously by Penguin Random House Audio, read by the author. UTA represented Rogen in the deal. Rogen first shared the news via his social media platforms. On Twitter, Rogen tweeted: “I wrote a book called Yearbook. It’s true stories and essays and stuff that I hope you think are funny. It comes out in May, but if you like you can order it now.” Rogen shared a similar message on Instagram, adding, “I’ve been working on this for years and am psyched to get it out in to the world. Yay! Thanks to the amazing @toddjamesreas for doing my cover art.”

When approached for comment, Sandy Rogen, Seth’s mother, had this to say: “At first I was worried that Seth was writing a book, because I was like, ‘Oh no! What’s he gonna say?!’ I was actually scared to even read it. But I’m very happy I did. It’s not really a memoir, like I thought it might be. I guess it’s more of a bunch of funny stories? Does that make sense? He talks about doing stand-up when he was a kid (I drove him to all his shows!), his grandparents, high school, moving to L.A., meeting some famous people, things like that. If I’m being honest, I really wish there wasn’t so much drug talk. Why does he need all that? It’s like ‘We get it!’ And some of the stories? I mean, they’re entertaining, but I was just shocked they happened and he never told me! Overall, I think it’s more sweet and funny than anything, so I like it, and I’m glad he wrote it, but I’d be even more glad if he called me more.”

Seth Rogen is an actor, writer, producer, director, entrepreneur, and philanthropist who, alongside longtime collaborators Evan Goldberg and James Weaver, produces film and television projects through their production company, Point Grey Pictures. Rogen can next be seen in Hulu’s series Pam & Tommy, which has been spearheaded by Point Grey. Currently, Rogen stars in Brandon Trost’s film An American Pickle, in which he plays both lead characters. Rogen and Goldberg also launched Houseplant, a Canada-based cannabis company. In 2012, Rogen and his wife, Lauren Miller-Rogen, founded HFC, a national nonprofit organization that funds research and provides care for families coping with Alzheimer’s.

Former Congressman Will Hurd to Publish Book on the Future of the GOP

Former Congressman Will Hurd Releasing Book on the Future of the GOP

Simon & Schuster announced that it will publish former United States Representative Will Hurd’s book on the future of the Republican party and America’s path forward in tumultuous times. Hurd, who has been called “the future of the GOP” by Politico and, for a time, was the House’s only Black Republican, represented a 71% Latino swing district in Texas that runs along 820 miles of U.S.-Mexico border. A former undercover CIA officer in South Asia and cybersecurity executive, Hurd brought his expertise in intelligence and security to Congress.

The son of a White mother and Black father, Hurd frequently stood as an independent voice against President Trump and the GOP’s divergence from historical conservative values. Additionally, he has written about his views for major news publications and appears regularly on cable and network news. In his book, which is currently untitled and slated for publication in 2022, Hurd draws on his experience to offer a clear-eyed, forward thinking playbook for the country rooted in timeless Republican ideals, bipartisanship, inclusivity, and democratic values. Stuart Roberts at Simon & Schuster acquired North American, audio, and first serial rights from Eve Attermann at WME.

“The only way big things have ever been done in this country is by doing them together, because way more unites us than divides us,” Hurd said. “Whether you are a Republican, Democrat, Independent or don’t vote, you should care about having two strong parties that can compete in an open marketplace of ideas. I’m excited to share stories from growing up in an interracial family in Texas, serving my country in the back alleys of dangerous places, and serving in the halls of Congress after defying the odds in one of the most competitive districts in the country. The timeless lessons I learned from these experiences can serve as a road-map for how to make the tough choices necessary to keep this century the American Century.”

Dana Canedy, Senior Vice President and Publisher of Simon & Schuster says, “Simon & Schuster is looking forward to publishing Will Hurd’s incisive and inspiring book on how America can chart a future that matches our potential. Hurd is an important and respected conservative voice who is pushing the national conversation in new directions. His unique experience in and outside of Congress equip him with valuable perspective and insight.”

Pulitzer Prize Winner Lawrence Wright Penning THE PLAGUE YEAR

0

Lawrence Wright, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his book, The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and The Road to 9-11, has written an all-encompassing account of COVID-19 in America, from its origins in China, to the critical first weeks and months of its arrival in the U.S., through its escalation around the world, to today.

“We are witnessing an extraordinary moment in history,” said Wright, “where lives are being lost to COVID 19 every day. As a reporter, I feel a great responsibility to give a full accounting of what has happened – indeed is still happening – and to sort through the science, to address the political calamity, to gain an understanding of what has led to this moment, and to pay tribute to all the professionals who are putting their lives on the line.”

Wright reports on the Trump administration’s response. He shows how the virus was handled by politicians, policy makers, and frontline workers, the vaccine development and its ongoing rollout, and the newly emerging virus variants. His account takes note of the failures that might have spared the nation from the magnitude of the catastrophe, but he also shines a light on the heroes who have fought to curb this contagion.

The book, THE PLAGUE YEAR, will be published by Knopf on June 8, with an initial printing of 100,000 copies. A part of it appeared in a recent issue of The New Yorker. Last spring, Knopf published Wright’s The End of October, a novel that all but predicted our current pandemic. It went on to become a national bestseller.

In THE PLAGUE YEAR, Wright takes us inside the Center for Disease Control and the White House, into a hospital COVID ward, into the realm of prediction specialists – and even inside the human body, diving deep into the science of how virus and vaccines function. Wright cuts through layers of misinformation and obfuscation, giving readers the first clear-eyed assessment of this ongoing catastrophe, and pays tribute to the medical professionals who continue to risk their lives fighting the virus.

COCKROACHES BY JO NESBO
Review by TraceyReaderDad

Norwegian Detective Harry Hole has been drinking steadily since his success in Australia (see my review of “The Bat”).

The Norwegian Ambassador to Thailand,  has been found, by the hooker he hired, murdered in a Bangkok motel room.  A knife stuck in his back.

The Norwegian authorities know more than they will discuss and need the investigation into the Ambassador’s murder to be kept under wraps.  They decide the best person to send to Bangkok is Harry since he is somewhat famous now, but, also, they think, a controllable alcoholic.

Going sober for Harry is no easy task and by the time he reaches Bangkok, he is in the midst of withdrawal.  But he joins a team of investigators led by American ex-pat, homicide inspector, Liz Crumley.

Visiting the scene of the crime, Harry starts his investigation by examining the body (kept cold with the AC on high) and the crime scene, including the Ambassador’s limo.

Harry finds numerous clues including something very disturbing. Photos of young boys having sex with older men.  Pedophiles…..

The murder count rises and the intrigue increases….reaching the highest levels in the Thailand Norwegian community.

Who killed the Ambassador and why?  Was the Ambassador a pedophile?  Is that why the Norwegian authorities want Harry to keep this quiet?

“Cockroaches” is the second book in the Harry Hole (pronounced Holy) series, and is terrific, dark, brutal, and hot. Harry Hole is a great detective but is fighting his own demons that he desperately tries to keep at bay with drugs and alcohol….except when he is on a case.
