SHELTERING IN WITH AUTHOR KRISTINA RIENZI

Tell us, briefly, what your quarantine is like, what you’re doing.

What a wild time in history we’re living, friends! Never, in all my far-out-authorly-dreams did I ever imagine a pandemic happening in my lifetime, let alone being quarantined. Yet, here we all are…in this together…trying to survive, and hoping to thrive.

My quarantine experience has been equal parts stress and gratitude. I’m only human, so experiencing some level of stress and anxiety, just like the rest of the world, is normal. Yet, I refuse to allow negativity to get the best of me.

At times, though, I can’t help but get sucked into a negative loop of overeating, watching/reading an overabundance of COVID news, working 24/7, or getting caught up in the “what if” scenarios in my mind that I used to seek for storylines.

My storyline is the reality I’m living and that’s the scariest part of all.

Nevertheless, every time I feel that negativity coming on, I acknowledge it, feel it, and then I let it go. I think of something I’m truly grateful for: My health. My family. My life. They’re everything to me right now.

As a coach with a psychology background, I know better. On paper, I have all the tools, knowledge, resources, and coping skills to handle stressful times for myself, and to help others. However, quarantine life is a new experience I’m navigating for the first time just like everyone else.

To keep me on a positive and healthy track, I’ve turned to education. I’m taking classes and, notably, joined The Happiness Studies Academy Certification Program  (CiHS) to learn more about the science behind well-being. It’s an interdisciplinary study of happiness created by a Harvard professor in conjunction with my coaching school iPEC. I need this distraction desperately right now and, more so, I hope I can use all I learn to help others.

Quarantining, for me, is about learning to cope with stress and anxiety when life circumstances are outside of your control, being present in the moment with my family, being there for others who need some hope and positivity, and ultimately growing into a stronger and wiser version of myself.

We’d like to know one of the best things about quarantine and one of the worst.

Easily the best thing about quarantine is getting to spend so much time with my husband and my 8-month-old daughter. Every day is new for her – she’s learning to crawl, talk, stand, and soon…walk! I will not miss a beat because I’m here with her every single day. It’s a blessing!

The worst part of all this is the social distancing. I miss spending time (in person) with my dad, my friends, and my family. I’d love to hug them all at once!

How are you doing business?

Business is being done but I’m doing less writing than I’d like. Instead, I’m focusing on key components to stay relevant. Calls with author friends and business associates, my writing support system. Author group virtual meetings. Reader newsletter interaction. And re-evaluating my strategies to be sure I’m spending my time on what’s most important to me. I’ve been off social media since late February for Lent, so I’m anxious to get back on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to connect with everyone on Easter.

How are you staying entertained?

Netflix! I’ve binge watched almost every limited series and Netflix Original movie. It’s a great distraction. I’m also taking classes online, using Headspace (meditation app), listening to self-help audiobooks, reading whatever strikes me on my kindle, and video chatting with anyone who wants to talk! As a workaholic, there isn’t enough time to do all I want to do while I’m home, so I do a little bit of each thing I love every single day.

Is there anything you’d recommend people do, see or read?

image0Essential oils! Diffuse them. Wear them. Smell them. They help!

YES! It’s already all over the Internet, but Tiger King is a must-see on Netflix! It has a little mystery, mayhem, and murder. Who doesn’t like that???

In terms of wellness, I’m taking a free 10-week class on Coursera offered by Yale called The Science of Well Being. I highly recommend it! It’s an interesting data-driven look at what truly makes us happy. The truth will surprise you!

Books? I recommend them all! Read whatever pulls you. Be it fiction, non-fiction, self-help, it doesn’t matter. Get lost in a book. Escape the real world horror and dive into another world where anything is possible. If you’re looking for a FREE read this month, check out my New Adult Domestic Thriller LURING SHADOWS.

Or some inspirational something you’d like to say?

I have so many inspirational things to say! I’m all about inspiration, but I’ll keep it simple today.

No matter how bad things get, remember that this situation is temporary. It will pass. You will persevere. Life will, eventually, go back to normal – even if a new normal. Use this time to focus on the GOOD in your life. No matter how small it may be. There is good. I promise you! I also promise that you will learn from this. You will grow. You will be a stronger and wiser version of yourself. And the world will be a better place with that version of you in it.

Sheltering In With HM Gooden

Well, Quarantine here (I’m calling it “Covid Cancelled”) involves me still going to work, except I’m mostly talking on the phone instead of seeing patients in real life.
I have more free time, but not really, which is a strange feeling. I always do better with my time neatly accounted for. So for me, the best and worst thing right now is my extra time. I know it won’t last, but without a deadline….well, I’m spinning!
On the good side—I have completed an enormous amount of puzzles this month. (10 Disney puzzles, for the record)
I would like to tell everyone out there who’s staying home— thank you so much!  You are making my job easier and saving more lives than you realize.
I also want to draw everyone’s attention to Queen Elizabeth II.  Love or hate the monarchy, she is an inspiration. She’s 93 and has been there, done that when it comes to facing death. She was on the ground in WW2 and she shows no sign of slowing down.
I can only aspire to that level of stiff upper lip and love what she said about “We’ll meet again
I hope that someday, I’ll get a chance to meet some of you in person.

A chilling thriller featuring the seasoned Audible narrator from Rienzi’s 2018 ACX University debut.

Chris Ciulla, Winter Road’s seasoned audiobook narrator, has narrated over 133 books on Audible, and is also an established actor, voice actor and host.

Also by Kristina Rienzi:

Danger lurks in the unknown…

Marci Simon lives a double life: conservative professor of English by day, and controversial blogger of aliens by night. But when a classified document lands in her lap, her two worlds collide in an explosive revelation of shocking and deadly secrets.

Despite imminent danger at every twist, Marci embarks on an unstoppable quest to expose the terrifying truth. Only she never anticipated the entangled nebula of dark lies, nor the never-ending wormhole the government would spiral through to silence her forever.

Knowledge can kill.  And Marci knows too much. With global security at risk, no one can be trusted. To debunk the stratosphere of deceit, Marci races at the speed of light to escape the grips of the clandestine Extraterrestrial Security Agency (ESA) hunting her before she vanishes like all the others. But Marci is unique. Despite being the ESA’s prime target, she’s also the skeleton key to the deadliest truth in the history of the universe.

The nightmare is real, and it’s only just begun. Marci must take a nefarious leap of faith before her options, and her breaths, evaporate into a black hole for all eternity.

SHELTERING IN WITH…….KATE DOUGLAS

#3.kate.logsSHELTERING IN WITH KATE DOUGLAS

Okay…read that title and I’m laughing. If anyone wants to be sheltered in with me, they’d better bring their work gloves and an extra chainsaw wouldn’t be remiss…let me explain.

It’s life in the age of the pandemic…Doug and I are both 70, and our governor here in California mandated any “elderly” age 65 and older are required to stay at home and not go out for anything other than essential trips. We looked at each other and sort of had a “holy shit. We’re elderly? Nah…” moment, and went back to doing what we’re always doing…working in the orchard, cleaning deadwood out of the forest, cleaning up all the branches from trees that either fell down or broke after a spring snowstorm last week after weeks of weather into the 70s. Essentially doing what we do best: Staying home! Our daughter, who knows us way too well, sent me the meme below…it’s totally apropos.

#1 Meme

We moved from wine country to gold country in the fall of 2018. We just couldn’t take living in town anymore after a lifetime in the country, so we’re now in a tiny little gold rush town with two main streets…our driveway starts on one of them, so we’re essentially “in town,” but once you go down our driveway, which isn’t all that long, it’s like we’ve entered another world. We’ve got over six acres with a big pond, an old (probably over 50 years old) apple orchard, and over four acres of old growth forest with a stream at the bottom of the property. It’s like living in our own frickin’ park! One that needs constant maintenance…a LOT of maintenance!

I drive to the grocery store that’s less than a mile away once a week, and walk to the post office to check the mail, but mostly we’re just here because we don’t want to be anywhere else. In that respect, the “Stay at home” order works well for us!

Since I’m staying home, I’m finally finishing Dark Stranger, the book that’s been bugging me for over a year now. Considering that I wrote 4-6 novels and novellas a year for over fifteen years, it’s embarrassing to admit that I finally discovered that writer’s block isn’t just a cop-out for not writing. It really exists and it’s just awful! I literally lost my writers’ voice and nothing I wrote sounded like me. After almost two years of struggle, I discovered that it was all my OB/GYN’s fault…she took me off caffeine. I know, it is a cop-out to blame the poor woman, but it’s been a miserable two years without it, and it appears that coffee has been the source of creativity my entire career, because now that I’m drinking coffee again, my characters are talking to me and life is getting better.

As far as the pandemic, I’m being really careful because Doug has asthma, and it doesn’t help that he was a fireman years ago and much of their firefighting was done without protective gear. Even though he’s a big, healthy-looking dude, he’s at more of a risk if he gets infected with the coronavirus because it’s mainly a respiratory infection. I’m having drivers leave deliveries on the deck in the sun because UV light kills the virus, spraying boxes and packaging materials with bleach diluted in water, wearing latex gloves and a mask when I go out in public and wiping everything I touch when I get home with alcohol wipes until I can get to the sink and wash my hands. It’s inconvenient, but so far we’re both healthy. It will be a month in two days since Doug last left the place. My last trip off the Divide was three weeks ago. He doesn’t mind a bit, but neither do I.

Besides, mail order is amazing. I do my shopping—other than fresh foods—by computer and a few days later it shows up on the deck. I wave to the drivers to let them know I appreciate the fact they’re doing this, and it’s saving me a long drive off the mountain. The only way to get to the larger stores is to drive down into either the middle or south fork of the American River, and up out again on the other side. Each fork has created really deep canyons that surround our area which is called “The Divide.” We literally live on the divide between the two forks in a little place called Georgetown, one of the early towns founded during the first year of the gold rush in 1849, just a few months after gold was discovered in Coloma, less than ten miles away.

As far as what I’m actually doing—besides a lot of cooking, because Doug loves to eat and cooking is my therapy—it’s mostly work outside when I can get away from the book. We’ve got wild ducks and geese that come to the pond daily, along with a truly regal looking great blue heron who eats some of the gazillion frogs out in the cattails. That’s one of our favorite things about living here—the amazing wildlife!

We have so many different kinds of critters that we catch on “critter cameras” Doug sets out daily, and about once a week he puts together a video of all the activity. When we have enough clips to make a short video, I post them on my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/katedouglas.author If you go into the photos section and click on albums, the videos will come up. We even had a beautiful mountain lion wander across the dam a couple of weeks ago!

I’m in better physical shape than I’ve been in years, but I love outdoor work where I can push myself because I’m stubborn like 7214534that. When I’m working outside, I let my mind drift and Anton is finally back! For those of you who may have read my Wolf Tales or Spirit Wild series, you might remember that Anton Cheval is the pack alpha. He’s been the one prodding me to tell my stories, but when he quit talking to me last year, I couldn’t write anymore. Now that he’s bugging me again, I am finally “hearing” my characters, in their own voices and with their unique personalities. I’ve missed them and missed the thrill of actually finishing a book. Now that I fully believe it’s going to happen, I feel as if I’m waking up after a very long, dark sleep. DARK STRANGER will be the seventh book in the Spirit Wild series, a Wolf Tales spinoff that follows the second generation of Chanku, born into a world that knows shapeshifters exist. It makes for some interesting interactions between humans and Chanku. These are independently published, in print as well as ebooks.

I’m also planning to put out a newsletter in the near future. It’s been almost a year since my last one, after doing a monthly newsletter for years. I’ve received a number of print copies of some of the early books from my original Wolf Tales and Sexy Beast tales, and I’m hoping to give them out as prizes in my newsletter drawing, so if you have some but are missing any of the early ones, watch for the newsletter. I’ve also got a couple of pairs of custom Wolf paw print earrings that are really cool. They were made especially for me to use as contest prizes. If you’re not a member of my newsletter group, you can sign up at katedouglas-subscribe@yahoogroups.com  I’ll send out a notice when it’s up on my website, and the notice will also appear on my Facebook page.

We still can’t believe we found this gem of a home, tucked away in Georgetown. We’ve met neighbors who had no idea it was even down here! What’s funny is that when Doug and I were dating in 1971, we were talking about buying property in Gold Country. He said, “Well, if we’re going to buy property, we should probably get married.” I said, “Okay,” and we were married a few months later. Our 48th anniversary is this May, so his least romantic proposal in the history of proposals obviously worked, but I gave him a really bad time at the title office when we were signing papers on the purchase. I admitted he was a man of his word, but it really shouldn’t have taken 47 years to get me up here! I’m just really happy that in spite of my mother telling me it would never work, his approach—while not the most romantic—obviously worked just fine.

He’s also my perfect person to be quarantined with.

This is the morning view of our pond out the kitchen window, and why it’s so much easier to “self isolate” up here than when we lived in town! The forest circles almost the entire property with the orchard just behind the house and running up a hill.

#2.pond

In the next photo, that’s me loading the logs Doug’s cutting off the tree on the ground behind me. It’s a big black locust that fell down during a snow storm last week—it pulled right out of the ground and just fell over! Each of those rounds weighs between 40-60 pounds. I weigh 122 pounds which means I’m lifting almost half my body weight. Because I’m not all that big, I’ve learned to use my legs instead of my back, so it always surprises me that I can pick up stuff that heavy—but if you notice, I can’t straighten my legs out because that sucker is heavy! I’ve been putting them in the wheelbarrow one at a time and pushing each one up the hill to the wood pile. Best exercise I’ve had in years!

#4.woodpile

Anyway, that’s about it from Georgetown, California, right in the heart of the California Gold Country, where we are surviving the first pandemic I’ve ever experienced. I do hope it’s our last, though I have a feeling we may be looking at our new normal. if nothing else, when you can’t go anywhere, there’s a lot more time for reading! And if you’re at all like me, it’s impossible to be bored when you have a good book to read. Be safe and we’ll all get through this eventually.

Autism Acceptance Month

0

admin-ajax-7-300x150 (1)You may know April as Autism Awareness Month, but it’s also Autism Acceptance Month, founded in 2011 by autistic self-advocate Paula Durbin Westby to push back against harmful stereotypes and put the voices of autistic people first. With that in mind, all the books we’re highlighting today are by #actuallyautistic authors, and we couldn’t be more proud to publish them.

The Kiss Quotient by Helen HoangTHE KISS QUOTIENT by Helen Hoang

Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases—a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old.

It doesn’t help that Stella has Asperger’s and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice—with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can’t afford to turn down Stella’s offer, and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan—from foreplay to more-than-missionary position… Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses, but crave all of the other things he’s making her feel. Their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense. And the pattern that emerges will convince Stella that love is the best kind of logic…

A Room Called Earth by Madeleine RyanA ROOM CALLED EARTH by Madeleine Ryan

The debut novel from an autistic writer, an extraordinary story of a fiercely original young woman whose radical self-acceptance illuminates a new way of being in the world, and opens up a whole new realm of understanding and connection.

As a full moon rises over Melbourne, Australia, a young autistic woman gets ready for a party. What appears to be the start of an ordinary night out, though, is, through the prism of her mind, extraordinary. As the events of the night unfold, she moves from person to person, weaving a web around the magical, the mundane, and the tragic. From the inimitable mind of Madeleine Ryan, an outspoken advocate for neurodiversity, A Room Called Earth is a magical and miraculous adventure inside the mind of an autistic woman. Humorous and heartwarming, and brimming with joy, this hyper-saturated celebration of acceptance is a testament to moving through life without fear, and to opening ourselves up to a new way of relating to one another.

Misfit by Andreas SouvaliotisMISFIT by Andreas Souvaliotis

Updated and expanded: A new edition of the inspiring memoir by one of Canada’s most unusual, successful and socially conscious businesspeople. Andreas Souvaliotis was raised at a time when being on the autism spectrum wasn’t easily diagnosed or even discussed. Minds like his were simply considered odd. He also knew from an early age he was gay, and it terrified him as he was growing up with openly homophobic parents in one of Europe’s least tolerant societies. Andreas’s differences made him an outsider, right through to his mid-forties. And then suddenly, everything changed. Misfit is the extraordinary memoir of a man who realized there was strength in his strangeness, that it could be used as a force for good.

Get a Grip, Vivy Cohen! by Sarah KapitGET A GRIP, VIVY COHEN! by Sarah Kapit

In this perfectly pitched novel-in-letters, autistic eleven-year-old Vivy Cohen won’t let anything stop her from playing baseball–not when she has a major-league star as her pen pal.

Vivy Cohen is determined. She’s had enough of playing catch in the park. She’s ready to pitch for a real baseball team.

But Vivy’s mom is worried about Vivy being the only girl on the team, and the only autistic kid. She wants Vivy to forget about pitching, but Vivy won’t give up. When her social skills teacher makes her write a letter to someone, Vivy knows exactly who to choose: her hero, Major League pitcher VJ Capello. Then two amazing things happen: A coach sees Vivy’s amazing knuckleball and invites her to join his team. And VJ starts writing back!

Rogue by Lyn Miller-LachmannROGUE by Lyn Miller-Lachmann

Kiara has Asperger’s syndrome, and it’s hard for her to make friends. So whenever her world doesn’t make sense—which is often—she relies on Mr. Internet for answers. But there are some questions he can’t answer, like why she always gets into trouble, and how do kids with Asperger’s syndrome make friends? Kiara has a difficult time with other kids. They taunt her and she fights back. Now she’s been kicked out of school. She wishes she could be like her hero Rogue—a misunderstood X-Men mutant who used to hurt anyone she touched until she learned how to control her special power.

When Chad moves in across the street, Kiara hopes that, for once, she’ll be able to make friendship stick. When she learns his secret, she’s so determined to keep Chad as a friend that she agrees not to tell. But being a true friend is more complicated than Mr. Internet could ever explain, and it might be just the thing that leads Kiara to find her own special power.

Calling All Minds by Temple GrandinCALLING ALL MINDS by Temple Grandin

From world-renowned autism spokesperson, scientist, and inventor Temple Grandin — a book of personal stories, inventions, and facts that will blow young inventors’ minds and make them soar.

Have you ever wondered what makes a kite fly or a boat float? Have you ever thought about why snowflakes are symmetrical, or why golf balls have dimples? Have you ever tried to make a kaleidoscope or build a pair of stilts? In Calling All Minds, Temple Grandin explores the ideas behind all of those questions and more. She delves into the science behind inventions, the steps various people took to create and improve upon ideas as they evolved, and the ways in which young inventors can continue to think about and understand what it means to tinker, to fiddle, and to innovate. And laced throughout it all, Temple gives us glimpses into her own childhood tinkering, building, and inventing.

Can I Play Too? by Samantha CotterillCAN I PLAY TOO? by Samantha Cotterill

Friendship–and trains!–take center stage in this gentle, inviting story about paying attention to other people’s feelings.

Two boys’ fun train-track-building project takes a turn when one of the boys obliviously insists on only doing things his way. Their disagreement spells disaster for the train and the friendship, until a kind teacher steps in and explains how to tell when a friend is feeling happy, frustrated, or angry. . . and how to ask for a do-over. Compromising and paying attention to how other people are feeling can be hard for any kid, but especially for kids on the autism spectrum. Samantha Cotterill’s third book in the Little Senses series provides gentle guidance along with adorable illustrations to help every kid navigate the twists and turns of friendship and working together.

Ebooks Pirated on eBay and How to Stop It – For Authors

0

E-book, stack of books, eps 10

Pirating ebooks is not new. People steal. They have throughout history and they will continue until the end of time. People who purchase stolen goods and justify it, or are ignorant of it, will continue as well. The burden to stop such criminal activity falls to the person who cares the most about it. The victim.

Authors have their ebooks stolen on a daily basis. Criminals make a good deal of money by doing it. And though it isn’t easy to stop such behavior, there are things you can do.

When it comes to eBay you have some options.

ebay logo

VeRO is Verified Rights Owner program that eBay uses to allow owners of intellectual rights to report listings or products that infringe on their rights.

https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-policies/selling-policies/intellectual-property-vero-program?id=4349

This page gives you step by step instructions for reporting- https://pages.ebay.com/seller-center/listing-and-marketing/verified-rights-owner-program.html#m17-1-tb2

This is the page you have to fill out- https://ir.ebaystatic.com/pictures/aw/pics/pdf/us/help/community/EN-NOCI.pdf

Reason code would be 3.2 Item(s) is a counterfeit product which infringes a copyright.

This is a long and tedious way to take care of a chronic issue of stolen intellectual rights. You can take the document, fill out what never changes (create a template) and then you’ll just plus in the URLs and product numbers as those change.  Then, you turn it in –
vero@ebay.com

This is a tedious process that takes time to do and then ebay takes their time reviewing and addressing the situation.  During the waiting process, the criminal selling your ebook or other intellectual property continues to make money and so does eBay.

Anytime I sent a report asking that an illegal item be removed I made sure to inform eBay that it was my opinion that they knew they have a chronic problem and were benefitting from illegal activity on their site.

Finally, one day, I got a phone call from someone at eBay. They told me to create an ebay account that would never be used to sell or buy anything. This would be the account they would assign to the author’s work I was reporting as stolen. They would give me an electronic way to report stolen intellectual property, so it expedited the process.

2020-04-10_23h15_09

You should request the VeRO reporting tool.

This allowed me to have illegal items removed so much faster. It also allowed for me to send a message to eBay if I wanted them to know anything special about the case and it allowed for me to contact the seller of the illegal goods.

I let eBay know each time that the person has broken the terms of service with eBay and I ask them if they’re going to do something about it. I’m always polite. But, I always mention it.

I ALWAYS say something to the seller. Always.

It usually goes a little something like this-

You are a thief. You should be ashamed of yourself. You do not have permission to sell (author’s name) ebooks.  I have reported you to eBay. If you do this again I will request that your ENTIRE ACCOUNT be removed. Do not do this again.

Of the over 100 cases I’ve reported I’ve only had one seller respond to me. They apologized. These people make way too much money selling stolen goods on eBay to want to take a chance that they will lose their entire account, especially if they have a following there.

READERS WHO BUY STOLEN BOOKS ON EBAY

Because many independent authors do sell their ebooks on eBay, legally, it is difficult for readers to be able to tell which are legitimate and which are pirated.  Authors need to make it known to readers or they need to police the eBay site themselves.

TRY HARDER TO STOP THE CRIMINAL ACTIVITY

Currently, eBay doesn’t have a way for an author to simply opt out.  You can’t send them a blanket statement saying no ebooks with your name on them can be sold.  Publishers and organizations that support authors should look into this and ask why it is eBay can stop the sale of body parts throughout its site, but it can’t stop the sale of ebooks for certain authors when asked to.

Why don’t publishers do more to stop this?

There are VeRO participant profiles that allow Verified Rights Owners to create a page and share information about intellectual property. Some smaller publishers have taken advantage of this.

https://pages.ebay.com/seller-center/listing-and-marketing/verified-rights-owner-program.html#m17-1-tb3

Having something available that lets readers know that certain publishers do not sell ebooks on eBay may not be helpful though. Many readers don’t know who publishers their favorite author’s books. So, it falls on the author to be aware of criminal activity on eBay and address it often.

SHELTERING IN with SHEILA ENGLISH

My days blend together even though I have been pretty disciplined in keeping to my normal work schedule.  Because I have animals, I have to get up early no matter what. So, I’m up by 7:30 am taking care of the dogs.

I do everything in 2-hour blocks of time starting at 8am.  I do my usual work which is all done remotely. Then I break it up with an hour of housework (aka napping – any time I say housework, I really mean napping). Why does quarantining make me sleepy? It does though.

If the sun is out, I go outside for lunch. I don’t tell anyone. I pretend I’ve run away to somewhere tropical paradise where gorgeous men take care of my every need (i.e. laundry, dirty dishes, scrub the toilet, NEEDS I say!).  Since that’s just a fantasy, I then go back in and clean the kitchen while contemplating how to bribe my son to do other chores that I really don’t want to do.

My husband works from home, so not a lot has changed for him. Other than me being home, too. Yes, it’s okay to feel sorry for IMG_3006him.

I am writing a novel and a comic book simultaneously.  I just finished all the edits on The Gemini Keys, but need to run it by my agent to see if I’ll be self-publishing it or if he wants to do something with it.

faitherI made a box set of my Faith Healer’s Daughters trilogy and made it $.99 cents for people who are looking for something to read while endeavoring not to do anything crazy while dealing with cabin fever. You know, like binging Netflix till your eyes bleed.

The BEST thing about quarantine is – I’m writing more! I get to enter the world of Adam Frankenstein which gives me such an amazing escape.

The WORST thing about quarantine is – I miss my family. We FaceTime or call but it’s not the same.

My suggestion or recommendations for people during quarantine is – Try something new! Or revisit comfort reads. Find humor somewhere.  Take an online class.  Keep to a schedule. Be disciplined. Reach out if you need support. We all do at some point.

Stay safe everyone!

An Interview with Author J.L. Delozier

headshot smallHi J.L. and welcome to Reader’s Entertainment. Let’s start with the synopsis of your book CON ME ONCE!

When Frank Lambda, a bumbling superhero wannabe, witnesses a mob hit gone wrong, he ends up running for his life. Enter the mysterious Keira, whose secret academy claims to turn wannabes like Frank into real heroes. Frank knows a con when he sees one. But desperate for an escape, he joins three other recruits for training in Las Vegas. Against the backdrop of a thousand spandex-clad cosplayers Keira’s true agenda—a multimillion-dollar heist from her mobster brother—is exposed. With their lives and a fortune at stake, Frank and his team of diverse misfits fight to become the heroes they always wanted to be.

What do you feel is the most unique aspect of your story?

The trio of cosplayers meet La Famiglia meets the Irish mob. It’s quite a combo – fireworks ensue.

Tell us about your main character(s).

The book has six key characters, but the hero’s journey belongs to Frank Lambda, an asthmatic superhero wannabe. Like Clarisse Starling from Silence of the Lambs, Frank’s trying to save all the little lambs—in his case, his South Philadelphia neighbors—as penance for failing to save his mother and baby brother from his abusive father. He learns, however, that real heroes don’t need capes to make a positive impact.

What genre(s) is this and who do you think will enjoy reading it? (type of audience)

Con Me Once is hard to plug it into a specific genre. From a bookstore standpoint, I’d call it suspense or action/adventure. But it has crime and mystery elements with more than a touch of noir. As far as audience: ages 16 – 50  – anyone who loves geek, pop, and comic culture.

Have you received any feedback on it yet, and if so, what was it?

I have – advanced reviews have been awesome. Here are two examples:
Con Me Once combines the fun of Marvel with the darkness of DC and the mafia drama of Scorsese.” HP Holo, author, The Wizard’s Way

Con Me Once is a fast-paced ride full of entertaining characters, rich settings, and a plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. Mob bosses, spy tech, and caped crusaders abound, but the real heart of this story is a friendship that has stood the test of time. Clear your schedule–once you start, you won’t want to put it down.” Sarah Stephens, author, It Was Always You

Tell us something about yourself that most of your readers may not know.

I used to play accordion. Badly.

What’s next for you?

I’m writing my first paranormal mystery, and wow—is it challenging. Stay tuned.

Where can people interact with you and find out more about you and your books?

SHELTERING IN with HOLLY JACOBS

Welcome Holly! Readers want to know what you’re doing while Sheltering In………

We adopted a new puppy just before Erie, PA went under a stay-at-home order. Tallulah MaeIMG_1216-1 is keeping us all busy and entertained! I’ve also been homeschooling 3 minions—ages 4-8—part time. (They’re parents are both in healthcare.) I put up two blog posts of some of the things we’re doing, if any other “new” homeschoolers are looking for ideas! Ideas 1Ideas 2

We’d like to know one of the best things about quarantine and one of the worst.

For me, the worst thing is my university closed, so I have no access to a ceramic studio. I brought all my half-done projects EFFECTShome. We’re in the process of building my own studio in the back of our new barn. HollysWoods Studio. That’s my best thing! I’m hoping to have it up and running by the end of the month!

How are you doing business?  How are you staying entertained?

I’ve always written short stories. They were my first writing sales. And my idea of fun is taking time out to write a new one. I combined our current quarantine, a new puppy and a romance. I’m hoping it makes people smile and serves as a reminder that even in the worst of times, there’s glee. (It should be up next week.) That was my entertainment the last couple weeks.

CRIB NOTES amzMy Hometown Hearts series started in January. The first two books, Crib Notes and A Special Kind of Different are out now for Kindle, Kobo, Nook and iBooks. Paperback, too. The third one, Homecoming, is available for preorder and will be released in June. You can check them out at www.HollysBooks.com.

This is a series about Family. An unexpected pregnancy. Adoption. Special Needs. Illiteracy. It’s about Loss. Love.  It’s about life. I hope during this uncertain time, the series gives people hope and warms their hearts!

I’ve been trying to post smile-worthy posts every day on my social media. In this dark time, it’s my attempt at making the world a little lighter.

Homecoming, 6/20
Suddenly a Father, 9/20
Thank you so much Holly for Sheltering In with our readers today!!
Stay healthy!!
