A new Paranormal, Sci-Fi/Fantasy Romance Novella featuring Faeries, Vampires, Shifters

Book one in The Refuge series

Find what you need at the Refuge. A place to stay, a warm body…love?

What’s a human refugee to do when the last place to hide is gone? For Rachel, the choice is clear—run to Jon. She’s crushed on him from afar. He plays hard, seemingly without regrets. He can save her, but does he return her affections?

Jon Schiff has a past he isn’t ready to talk about and he prefers to live the life of a bachelor instead of taking his rightful place as a Fae prince. When Rachel shows up on his doorstep, battered and scared, he can’t turn her away. The sweet-natured human intrigues him and makes him want to confront his messy past.

But when ghosts from their collective pasts threaten their present, will she accept him as her mate or decide there can be no future with him?

If they’re both willing to run with the wicked, they just might find their hearts’ true desire.

Bill Gates Book About Climate Change Releasing in June 2020

0

gatesBill Gates is writing a book about energy and climate change that will be published by Doubleday in June 2020. With this new book, , Gates seeks to share what he’s learned in over a decade of studying climate change and investing in innovations to address the problems. He will set out a vision for how the world can work to build the tools it needs to get to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. Anthony Chirico, President of the Knopf Doubleday Group, acquired world rights to the book from Michael I. Rudell of Franklin, Weinrib, Rudell & Vassallo.

In his book, Gates explains why he cares so deeply about climate change and what makes him optimistic that the world can prevent the worst impacts of the climate crisis. “Climate change is a unique global problem,” said Gates. “I am writing this book to help identify how we can work on a local, national, and global level to build the technologies, businesses, and industries to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.”

“Bill Gates has always been a problem-solver and now he’s addressing the world’s greatest problem: climate change,” said Robert Gottlieb, who will be editing the book for Doubleday. “His book not only makes the situation we’re in crystal clear — even I can follow the science! — but it’s prescriptive rather than tendentious: there are, he assures us, potential solutions that are realistic and affordable. His is a voice the world has come to trust.”

Gates’s interest in climate change is a natural outgrowth of the efforts by his foundation to reduce poverty and disease. Climate change, according to Gates, will have the biggest impact on the people who have done the least to cause it. As a technologist, he has seen first-hand how innovation can change the world. By investing in research, inventing new technologies, and by deploying them quickly at large scale, Gates believes climate change can be addressed in meaningful ways.

Gates said, “To prevent the worst effects of climate change, we have to get to net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases. This problem is urgent, and the debate is complex, but I believe we can come together to invent new carbon-zero technologies, deploy the ones we have, and ultimately avoid a climate catastrophe.”

Good Morning America Announces Dominicana As First Book Club Pick

dominicaRobin Roberts announced Angie Cruz’s Dominicana as the inaugural pick for ABC’s Good Morning America Cover to Cover Book Club . This announcement included a short video message from the author and an audience giveaway. Then, on October 29th, Angie Cruz will be a guest on the show to discuss the novel, inspired by her mother’s immigration story, with Robin Roberts and other GMA hosts. Good Morning America also created an Instagram that they will use to promote the pick, with additional video from Angie. You can follow along on Good Morning America’s Instagram @GMACovertoCover or their website.

About Dominicana:
Fifteen-year-old Ana Cancion never dreamed of moving to America, the way the girls she grew up with in the Dominican countryside did. But when Juan Ruiz proposes and promises to take her to New York City, she has to say yes. It doesn’t matter that he is twice her age, that there is no love between them. Their marriage is an opportunity for her entire close-knit family to eventually immigrate. So on New Year’s Day, 1965, Ana leaves behind everything she knows and becomes Ana Ruiz, a wife confined to a cold six-floor walk-up in Washington Heights. Lonely and miserable, Ana hatches a reckless plan to escape. But at the bus terminal, she is stopped by Cesar, Juan’s free-spirited younger brother, who convinces her to stay.

As the Dominican Republic slides into political turmoil, Juan returns to protect his family’s assets, leaving Cesar to take care of Ana. Suddenly, Ana is free to take English lessons at a local church, lie on the beach at Coney Island, see a movie at Radio City Music Hall, go dancing with Cesar, and imagine the possibility of a different kind of life in America. When Juan returns, Ana must decide once again between her heart and her duty to her family.

In bright, musical prose that reflects the energy of New York City, Angie Cruz’s Dominicana is a vital portrait of the immigrant experience and the timeless coming-of-age story of a young woman finding her voice in the world.

ALA Receives Google grant to Develop Library Entrepreneurship Centers

0

logoThe American Library Association (ALA) has received a $2 million grant from Google.org to develop library entrepreneurship centers and enable libraries across the country to double down on their support for people looking to start a new business.

“Today’s libraries are engines of entrepreneurship,” said ALA President Wanda Brown. “There is no better place than the library to deliver economic opportunity, especially to low-income people and those from underrepresented groups. In cities, towns and rural areas alike, a library card is the key to access market research, expert advice, new technology and business plans.

Google.org President Jacquelline Fuller said, “Libraries play a vital role in supporting aspiring entrepreneurs to thrive in their communities and we’re proud to support their efforts. Today marks a continuation of Google’s strong relationship with the ALA and with libraries across the country.”

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the funding for ALA as part of a $10 million pledge to help entrepreneurs from low-income and underrepresented groups start new businesses via access to training and capital. The $2 million grant builds on Google’s ongoing support of ALA and libraries, including the Libraries Lead with Digital Skillscollaboration funded by Grow with Google, which gave ALA $1 million to help libraries provide digital skills training to their patrons. That initiative, announced earlier this year, has already supported 130 libraries across 18 states and will continue to all 50 states in 2020.

The new Google.org grant will enable ALA to fund a cohort of 10 libraries with proven models to increase the number of low-income, business creators they serve from low-income and underrepresented backgrounds. Participating libraries will work to establish new partnerships with community-based organizations and further develop innovative models to bring their library’s resources out in the community. As a result of this initiative, libraries will directly support 15,000 people looking to start or grow their business. With almost fifty percent of libraries in the U.S. providing free space, resources or support to start a small business, they are one of the largest platforms for supporting aspiring entrepreneurs.

The grant will also support ALA in developing a “playbook” accessible to all libraries on what makes a successful library entrepreneurship program. The playbook will contain a set of recommendations to better serve entrepreneurs from diverse communities and common metrics to evaluate success. ALA also plans to build a peer-learning network for librarians interested in developing entrepreneurship programs of their own.

“The Google.org funding will enable ALA to expand library entrepreneurship programs in a handful of places where they already thrive,” Brown continued. “But the greater goal of the project surpasses well beyond the scope of the grant. We are creating a path to success for aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere – in particular, those with the fewest resources to chart new territory on their own.”

COVER AND TITLE REVEAL FOR NEW NOVEL HUNGER GAMES SERIES BY SUZANNE COLLINS

0

Ballad_of_Songbirds_and_Snakes_CoverScholastic Books today announced the title and cover for the much-anticipated new novel in the worldwide bestselling The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins¬—the first new Hunger Games book since Mockingjay, published in 2010. THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES will be published May 19, 2020, with a World English first printing of 2.5 million copies. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will be published simultaneously in print, digital and audio formats by Scholastic in the US, Canada, the UK and Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. In addition, translation rights to The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes have been sold by Stimola Literary Studio into 28 territories to date.

“It has been thrilling to see the growing excitement from readers around the globe for this new Hunger Games novel.” said Ellie Berger, President, Scholastic Trade. “Suzanne Collins is an expert storyteller and world-builder, and in revisiting the world of Panem, she again raises important questions about authority, the use of violence, and the truth of human nature.”

“This cover does an extraordinary job of capturing the conflict—both inner and outer—that lies at the heart of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” said David Levithan, VP, Publisher, and Editorial Director for Scholastic. “The mockingjay has returned, but at a new angle . . . which is very much in line with the story that Suzanne Collins is telling.”

ABOUT THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will revisit the world of Panem sixty-four years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the Tenth Hunger Games.

On returning to the world of The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins said, “With this book, I wanted to explore the state of nature, who we are, and what we perceive is required for our survival. The reconstruction period ten years after the war, commonly referred to as the Dark Days—as the country of Panem struggles back to its feet—provides fertile ground for characters to grapple with these questions and thereby define their views of humanity.”

ABOUT SUZANNE COLLINS AND THE HUNGER GAMES
Bestselling author SUZANNE COLLINS first made her mark in children’s literature with the New York Times bestselling Underland Chronicles fantasy series for middle grade readers. She continued to explore themes of war and violence for a YA audience with The Hunger Games Trilogy. The Hunger Games (2008) was an instant bestseller, appealing to both teen readers and adults. It was called “addictive” by Stephen King in Entertainment Weekly, and “brilliantly plotted and perfectly paced” by John Green in the New York Times Book Review. The book appeared on the New York Times bestseller list for more than 260 consecutive weeks (more than five consecutive years), and there are more than 100 million copies of all three books in the trilogy, The Hunger Games, Catching Fire (2009), and Mockingjay (2010), in print and digital formats worldwide. Foreign publishing rights for The Hunger Games Trilogy have been sold in 54 languages to 52 territories to date. In 2012 Lionsgate launched the first of four films based on the novels, starring Jennifer Lawrence. To date, the franchise has earned nearly $3 billion at the worldwide box office.

In 2010 Suzanne Collins was named to the TIME 100 list as well as the Entertainment WeeklyEntertainers of the Year list; in 2011 Fast Company named her to their 100 Most Creative People in Business; and in 2016 she was presented the 2016 Authors Guild Award for Distinguished Service to the Literary Community for exemplifying the unique power of young people’s literature to change lives and to create lifelong book lovers. It was the first time the Guild presented its annual award to a YA author. The Atlantic called Hunger Games heroine Katniss Everdeen, “the most important female character in recent pop culture history,” and TIME Magazine named Katniss to its list of “The 100 Most influential People Who Never Lived.” On The Hunger Games trilogy, The New York Times Book Review wrote, “At its best the trilogy channels the political passion of 1984, the memorable violence of A Clockwork Orange, the imaginative ambience of The Chronicles of Narnia and the detailed inventiveness of Harry Potter.” For more information about The Hunger Games, visit http://mediaroom.scholastic.com/hungergames.
