BEHIND THE WORDS: DAVIS BUNN

Behind the Words with Davis Bunn

Welcome David, we’re excited to have you on Reader’s Entertainment. First, tell our readers a bit about yourself. Where you’re from, where you live? Is writing your full-time job?

I was born and raised in North Carolina.  I left for graduate school in London at age twenty, and have lived in Europe, the Middle East and Africa ever since.

How long have you been writing?

I came to faith at age twenty-eight, while working as a consultant in Germany.  Two weeks later, I began to write.  I did not even know the word ‘calling’ at that point.  I wrote for nine years and finished seven books before my first, ‘The Presence’, was accepted for publication.

Give readers a look at a typical writing day.

Right now, because of my screen work as well as my book commitments, the days are quite intense.  I try to be at my desk by six.  The creative period ends sometime around lunch, because there is now so much administrivia to complete.

Tell us about your latest release? Where the idea came from? Perhaps some fun moments, or not so fun moments?

I have wanted to write a time-travel book for what seems like twenty years.  I actually wrote the first forty pages of this story nine years ago.  A man is given the chance to travel back in time and redo the worst day of his life.  Like that.  But it just wasn’t enough.  I felt like I was onto something really, really big.  But it wasn’t there yet.  The story needed…something.  So I set it aside.  Once every year or so, I’d go back and reread those initial pages.  And then…

Could you share one detail from your current release with readers that they might not find in the book? Perhaps a juicy bit of back-story, or something only you know about a character.

I realized what I had been missing.  Of course, once it came to me, it seemed so utterly natural I felt like I should have known this ten years ago.  But never mind.  The missing element was, this wasn’t to be a story about time travel.  It has to be about a man who goes back and relives ALL the mistakes of that very crucial period, only this time he realizes what he did wrong, and how it impacted the world around him.  In other words, it became a modern-day Prodigal Son story.

Who has been the most difficult character for you to write? Why?

By far it was the man’s wife.  There were actually two women.  One was the wife he simply did not love deeply enough.  The other was the one who should have been his lifelong partner, who could have been the healing grace, the living embodiment of eternal love.  Those scenes were wrenching to write.  The man seeing what he could have had, if he had only been a better man, if only…

If you could be one of your characters for a day which character would it be? Why?

I have been a passionate surfer all my life.  But never particularly good at the sport.  I mean, I’m okay.  But nowadays I often surf with international professionals, and they are sooooo much better than I would ever be.  In the story, this man goes back to the contest that launched him into the series of bad moves.  And now he carries with him thirty years of surfing the world’s biggest waves.  That day, with that level of experience, would be soooooo cooooooooool to live.

All writers are readers. Are there any particular authors that have influenced how you write and, if so, how have they influenced you?

So many.  One new element in my creative life, as I’ve said, is my screen work.  I have been reading a number of other novelists who also write scripts.  Their writing styles and emotive power are heightened by this back-and-forth transition.  I have been reading extensively, taking notes, copying certain traits…A literary thief.

Do you have a secret talent readers would be surprised by?

I am an avid road cyclist.  Most weeks, I ride between a hundred and twenty and a hundred and fifty miles.

Your favorite go to drink or food when the world goes crazy!

That would have to be what my brother calls the road serum.  A secret mix.

Thank you so much for joining us today, Davis!

Here’s a look at Davis’ latest release BURDEN OF PROOF:

When Ethan was twenty, he experienced a traumatic, life-changing event—the murder of his brother. Since that time, he has struggled with recurring memories of that fateful day and guilt from failure to save his brother.

When his brother’s widow, Dr. Sonya Barrett, requests Ethan’s help to uncover what really led to his brother’s death, Ethan rises to the challenge and begins his search for answers. But he is stunned to hear that Sonya and his brother were involved in a much larger case than he knew.

BOOK REVIEW: PIGEON BLOOD RED BY ED DUNCAN

0

Richard “Rico” Sanders is a hit man, with a conscience. He kills when he is sure the victim did something wrong, much like John Rain, and he has never made a mistake. He and his partner in crime, Jerry, have been working together for years.

Working with loan shark, Frank Litvak, they find and bring Robert McDuffie to Livak so he can pay him the $50,000 that he owes him.

Well…..Robert does not have it, so being the nice guy that he is, Litvak gives him an extra two weeks.

Before Rico and Jerry leave the office, Litvak gives Rico a necklace of 16 color matched, extremely valuable pigeon-blood red rubies, telling him “You know what to do” with these.

What Rico does is give them to Jerry while he fools around with his girlfriend, and Jerry, who has never heard of cargo pants with secure pockets, loses the necklace!

Unknown to them….Robert grabbed them and he is now off to Hawaii to be with his wife Evelyn and her friend, Rachel.

Rico figures out who has the necklace and off to Hawaii he goes, where…

…..All hell breaks loose.

To see what happens, you will have to read the book. 😉

“Pigeon-Blood Red” is a short book of only 200 pages, but, it is jam-packed with action and intrigue. Rico is a ruthless killer, but, one with morals: The conflict within him is apparent, and that makes him unpredictable and very scary. Excellent.

This is book #1 (out of three) in the Rico Sanders series.

The Runaway Bride by Jody Hedlund Book Review

The Runaway Bride by Jody Hedlund

Book review by Holly Irish

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was a delight. I always enjoy Jody’s stories. She just has a way of brining the reader in and making her characters come to life. I wish I would have read this book sooner. Arabella is a strong character. She comes from a wealthy family and knows that she has a place in society. However, when her father arranges a marriage for her, she rebels (for good reason) and jumps on a ship to British Colombia. There she enjoys her freedom and finds out what truly makes her happy. This is such a great story I recommend it to anyone that loves a soft, romance. Happy reading my friends.

Book Summary:

Haunted by mistakes in her past, will she ever again trust her heart to another?

Wealthy Arabella Lawrence flees to British Columbia on a bride ship, still bearing the scars of past mistakes. One of the few single women in the boomtown, she immediately attracts suitors, but she is determined not to find herself trapped again by making a poor choice.

Vying for her hand are two very different men. Lieutenant Richard Drummond is a gentleman in the Navy, held in high esteem. Peter Kelly is the town’s baker who has worked hard to build a thriving business. He and Drummond not only compete for Arabella’s affections, but also clash over their views of how the natives should be treated in the midst of a smallpox outbreak.

As Arabella begins to overcome her fears, she discovers someone in dire need—a starving girl left behind by her tribe. Intent on helping the child, Arabella leans on Peter’s advice and guidance. Will she have the wisdom to make the right decision, or will seeking what’s right cost both her and Peter everything?

Horror Poetry: SPICE by Sheila English

0

To celebrate Halloween we thought we’d share a horror poem by author Sheila English.

Spice

By

Sheila English

Breath hitches and it holds

Adrenaline spreads uncontrolled

Extremities shudder as blood turns cold

Fear perfumes the air fivefold

Eyes large and full of terror

Seek the darkest shadowed corner

Something there has come to scare her

To spice the flesh that I’ll devour

Skin so soft and salty-sweet

Time ticks by, she marinates

A pinch of tears roll down her cheeks

A dash of sweat glazes the meat

As lightning strikes, I hear her gasp

I take my time to make it last

I move forward to break my fast

Revealing teeth that I then gnash

Her scream is like a dinner bell

Hoodoo For Beginners by Angelie Belard Book Review

Hoodoo for Beginners by Angelie Belard is fun whether you believe in hoodoo or not. I loved the stories she included about her own history and this was such a fun book that I’ve started following the author to make sure I see what else she’s writing.
Like I said, this is her personal story about Hoodoo and how it affected, influenced and interacted with her life.
She talks about and teaches things about spells and cleansing and so much more. You learn about rootwork, powders, oils, candles, colors, what to say, how to say it and what to do. It addresses so much that I just can’t list it all.
If you’ve ever wondered about magic, real magic, I highly recommend this book!

5-Stars!

AboutHave you begun to realize that there is more to the world than what you can see? Can you feel your ancestors calling out to you? Are you ready to begin walking the path of spirituality and magic? Then Hoodoo for Beginners is the perfect first step.

Angelie Belard has helped hundreds of people with their problems using the potent and practical magic of Hoodoo.  From customers who needed help with financial or romantic problems, to friends and loved ones who wanted a way to connect to their ancestral roots, she has used Hoodoo to improve and enrich their lives. Now she’s ready to share her lifetime of learning with you.

◆ What Hoodoo is and how it began

◆ How to begin working with your ancestors

◆ The importance of crossroads and graveyards

◆ What Rootwork is and how to use herbs and roots in your magic

◆ The importance of spiritual cleansing

◆ How to work with candle magic and conjure oils

◆ How to make your own mojo bags to carry magic with you

This book covers everything you need to know to get started with Hoodoo, and includes over twenty five simple spells to draw money to you, bring luck and love into your life, and protect yourself from evil.

Hoodoo was hidden by its practitioners for hundreds of years, but now you can safely get started with information you won’t find anywhere else.
