Sheila’s Book Review: Summary of Midnight Sun

0

This title is misleading and loses half a point for it. But, it does do what it says it will.

Summary of Midnight Sun By Stephanie Meyer OMNI READS

I give this a generous 3.5 Stars out of 5

At first, I thought the title meant Stephanie Meyers had participated in writing this book. She did not. It is written by a “team” of people.
If you read Twilight you already know what is being told to you in this book plus a little bit about where Edward went the first time he left school after meeting Bella. That part was interesting. There’s a little more with his specific POV, but it’s just the same story. Not a lot new that I can tell.
The summary does take a variety of different angles looking at the story and breaks it down fairly well.

I’m not sure why you wouldn’t just read Midnight Sun, the novel, but maybe you have a homework assignment and this is a resource? Thus the 3.5 rating.

Through his eyes, the eyes of a century-old vampire, we experience a tumultuous love that blooms in the face of adversity: for before he can love anyone, Edward has to tame the bloodlust that turns him into a monster.

Experience a different kind of sweet agony as Edward has to navigate the world of the mortals: a fragile world full of delicate individuals which, however, can still be threatening even to a creature of myth and power.

Book Review: Burning Wild (Leopard People #3) by Christine Feehan
From: Maureen Gianinio’s Reviews

“Emma, I’ll never be easy. I won’t. I’m not going to pretend your life will be a bed of roses, but I can tell you that no man will ever need you more, or want you more, or love you more than I will.” Jake- Burning Wild
.
Reread Burning Wild, bk3 of Christine Feehan’s Leopard Series! Such a roller coaster ride! Talk about dysfunctional families…Christine takes us further into the darker sides of her shifter world. Poor Jake has won the tortued hero prize…so far! My heart breaks for him. So glad he finds a mate in Emma. Her nurturing, healing nature is just what his soul needs.
.
Heart breaking that he isn’t sure he can Love, if it had been beaten out of him. Love seeing his softer side is there, even if he doesn’t see it, the way he takes care of Emma, his interactions with the kids and his young house guest. Yet, he struggles, hoping just having Emma near will be enough and he can spare her becoming part of his world, but knowing he could never let her go.
And she aches to know what his mixed messages are, if she’s means more to him than employee, if she is stuck in the friend zone. Oh how she tests him! Finally pushing him over the edge to make his claim.
.
All the while the dangers from his past, his warped family, are circling. Endangering him and now her. We do get a look at how their Leopard will emerge to protect them. The secondary characters emerge grabbing you, too. Hope we get to see some of their stories some day…hoping none of them are the enemy talked about in Leopard’s Wrath. (Bk12)
.
Our favorite regulars are present!
Poor Drake, ever the voice of reason, stands by as advisor, the leader, ushering Jake into his plans, taking us further into the series plot. Conner, and Joshua, still honorable and protective even if a little worse for wear, clues to life making them tortured heroes.
Along with the dangers, the heart ache, and the heat. This book has some of my favorite laugh out loud moments… the sink sprayer and horse trough. ..and Drake and Joshua at the movies!
Onto Wild Fire, next…fingers crossed for Conner!

Sheila’s Book Review: Voices From The Fringe: Short Stories by S.M. Mitchel

Time for something a little different!

Voices From the Fringe: Short Stories by SM Mitchel

I give this book 4.5 Stars out of 5

These stories all have some element of fantasy/paranormal to them. Each story is unique and well written. I love that there’s an element in each story that is thought-provoking.
Though the book could have benefitted from some editing, the stories are so interesting I was able to overlook that.
I would certainly recommend this book and would read another by the same author.

ABOUT:

A repeated day that rarely differs from the last, a duo searching for a library in an unknown apocalypse, a man who may be an automaton, and a shapeshifter that has lost their face. None of these stories have anything in common, but they do share a common source. What that source is and what these stories say to you is up for interpretation.
First time author S.M. Mitchell brings you four short stories about the dangers of living in a time loop, the difference between man and machine, and why you should never steal a stranger’s wallet. Voices from the Fringe is a collection that is open to interpretation and will make you think about topics you have never thought of before and keep you guessing about what you actually know about the people around you. With a style that draws you in, you will not know how to feel once the stories end.

SCHOLASTIC PROVIDES EDUCATORS DIGITAL SOLUTIONS FOR VIRTUAL LEARNING IN 2020–21 ACADEMIC YEAR

0

As school districts nationwide begin the 2020–21 academic year, whether in person, remotely, or following a hybrid model, access to high-quality, flexible digital literacy resources is more critical than ever before. Amidst this shift, Scholastic is meeting the needs of nearly 50,000 educators nationwide with a suite of award-winning personalized learning programs designed to fit varying schedules and implementation models with equitable learning opportunities and robust analytics: Scholastic F.I.R.ST. for grades pre-K–2, Scholastic W.O.R.D. for grades K–5, and Scholastic Literacy Pro for grades K–8. In August, Digital Promise recognized Scholastic F.I.R.S.T. and Scholastic W.O.R.D. with Research-Based Design product certification, verifying for parents and educators that these programs are steeped in research about learning.

To learn more about the full range of Scholastic digital solutions to support literacy instruction, visit: www.scholastic.com/edtech.

“School closures and disruptions to learning have presented unprecedented challenges for educators and families,” said Beth Polcari, President, Scholastic Magazines Group. “We know that educators are doing the best they can right now to keep their students safe and ensure that learning continues. Scholastic remains committed to supporting teachers by making personalized learning accessible and equitable, to help students continue to grow as skillful readers, regardless of their learning environment.”

Scholastic Digital Solutions provide a comprehensive approach to literacy instruction, informed by cutting-edge research from leading experts, helping all students build key foundational reading skills. Based on the late Dr. Kay MacPhee’s years researching the link between reading difficulties and sound differentiation, Scholastic F.I.R.S.T. provides personalized learning for each individual student, focused on building phonemic awareness at their own unique learning pace. Students strengthen foundational reading skills by following a highly-adaptive path through 6,695 micro-actions, leading to reading proficiency. Utilizing extensive research from Dr. Elfrieda Hiebert, Scholastic W.O.R.D. helps students master vocabulary acquisition and deepen comprehension by introducing the 2,500 morphological word families that make up 90% of texts students will encounter.

To help further strengthen the connection between school and home, Scholastic Literacy Pro enhances independent reading for students with access to over 2,500 fiction and nonfiction ebooks, available 24/7. Educators use this digital management tool to easily monitor student reading activities, goals, and achievements through real-time reporting, while students develop a sense of ownership as they select and discover books tailored to their personal interests.

“We have to think differently about how we keep students meaningfully engaged. A sense of personalization is so key,” explains Rowena Lagrosa, Interim Administrator, Los Angeles Unified School District / Beyond the Bell, Intervention Programs. “I think Scholastic Literacy Pro does just that because it is obviously geared towards students’ interests. Children must feel connected to what they are doing. This is an added tool to help students work towards personalization, helping to create independent learners, and students who are self-directed—who feel that they have some control over their own learning.”

IDW and Hasbro Raise Awareness for Veteran Mental Health with G.I. JOE Comic Book Series

0

During National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, Poignant G.I. JOE Story about PTSD and Recovery is the Centerpiece for Virtual Panel with Veterans and Available to Read for Free Online

(From IDW Press Release)

To bring attention to the serious issues facing the heroes who have served our country, IDW and Hasbro have teamed up during September’s National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month with promotions timed to coincide with The Governor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide Among Service Members, Veterans, and their Families, sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

At the center of IDW and Hasbro’s combined efforts is the G.I. JOE comic book series, based on the iconic military toy brand. The recent seventh issue in the series, entitled “A Soldier’s Heart”, focuses on Shana “Scarlett” O’Hara, a combat veteran struggling with the return to civilian life, who joins a support group and navigates both everyday challenges and tragic losses on a path toward recovery. The G.I. JOE creative team consulted with proud service members and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to craft the story and provided valuable real-world information on mental health and resources for support in the issue for the benefit of readers who might require it.

During the month of September, IDW and Hasbro have made G.I. JOE #7 available to read for free online, in an effort to spread awareness of suicide prevention and mental health. IDW also commissioned original artwork from fan-favorite artist Freddie Williams II as a public service announcement, featuring G.I. JOE characters and a banner proclaiming “Hope Lives Here”, a message of encouragement ubiquitous with suicide prevention initiatives.

Furthermore, IDW and Hasbro have hosted a virtual panel to raise awareness. Moderated by George Gustines of The New York Times, the panel brings comic book creators, licensors and publishers, combat veterans, and experts on mental health issues together to discuss this important topic. Participants include:

  • Paul Allor                   Writer, G.I. JOE
  • Michael Kelly             VP Global Publishing, Hasbro
  • Patricia Watson         PhD, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and G.I. JOE #7 Consultant
  • Duane K.L. France    U.S. Army SFC, LPC, and G.I. JOE #7 Consultant
  • Tom Waltz                  IDW Senior Editor, Writer, and Former U.S. Marine

The G.I. JOE panel addressing suicide prevention awareness can be viewed here.

G.I. JOE is one of the great pop culture icons of the past century, and I think everyone involved recognizes how powerful this brand can be when used to shine a light on mental health among our veteran population,” says writer Paul Allor. “I hope this panel and making the issue available for free during the month of September helps spread that message even further.”

In 1982, Hasbro debuted G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero, a reimagining of their classic toy line with a premise that pitted a special mission force, “G.I. JOE”, against a ruthless criminal organization, “Cobra”. One of the most successful toy lines in history, A Real American Hero has transformed over the decades into a valuable multimedia intellectual property, adapted and merchandised as feature films, video games, comic books, animated series, etc.

Since 2010, IDW Publishing has produced licensed G.I. JOE comic books showcasing the fan-favorite characters of A Real American Hero. Their latest interpretation of the series, entitled simply G.I. JOE, launched in 2019 and follows an insurgency of military operatives and civilian recruits struggling to resist a victorious Cobra takeover. The series, written by Paul Allor and illustrated by Chris EvenhuisNiko Walter, and Emma Vieceli, is distinguished by moving, character-driven tales that explore (and sometimes challenge) concepts of patriotism, duty and sacrifice, courage and personal responsibility, loss, and trauma.

SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS BY ABIGAIL KEAM

Special Feature

The School Of Hard Knocks Of Writing by Abigail Keam

Hello. I am Abigail Keam, and I have made my living by being a full-time writer for over eleven years  writing mysteries. I also have written a clean romance series and a not-so-clean fantasy series. I am an Amazon best-selling and an award-winning author.

I love my job. I love writing for an appreciative audience, but it has been a long climb to get to the top. There are hidden secrets along the way which like to trip up authors.

LIFE IS NOT FAIR!

Some writers will get to the top of the ladder very quickly because they have strong backing which includes financial aid to promote their series. They have investors to back their talent. Other writers have written far superior books, but can’t get noticed because they have no money to promote their book.  Those authors fizzle out as they cannot afford to write.  In the end, we lose their voice. Life is not fair.

Publishers don’t really care that your book is well written. They care that it is a product which will sell and hit the important lists. If your book is a great book, but if publishers don’t foresee a trend in that particular genre, your book will not get published. Life is not fair.

A prominent reviewer might take offense at something in your book. They will air their grievance on social media which will go viral. Your writing career goes up in flames. Yes, that happens.  Life is not fair.

So why write at all? Because writers have something to say. They want to entertain, inform, and connect with their readers. It is an instinct with writers that the written word is more powerful than music or art. They must put words to paper. They must create. They are the storytellers of old. They are the collective memory of our past. They are the torch bearers of the future. They are willing to take risks to bring their stories, their thoughts, their consciousness, their dreams to you.  So, my advice to you is to read to your heart’s content, and if you feel the burgeoning desire for writing words—indulge yourself.  You never know.  You might be the next Agatha Christie or Willa Cather or Shirley Jackson or Eudora Welty or Anne Rice.  People might be reading you for generations to come.  Life may not be fair, but life has many surprises in store for all of us.  You might be the next great success. Take the plunge. You never know what might happen.

Take a look at Abigail’s latest release: MURDER UNDER A WOLF MOON

Madeline Mona Moon is not your typical young lady. She is a cartographer by trade, explorer by nature, and adventurer by heart.

She has inherited a fortune from her uncle and is one of the richest women during the Great Depression. But there’s a problem.

Mona attends an elegant party given by Elspeth Hopper, the daughter of a world-renowned English archaeologist. Not long afterwards, Elspeth’s maid is found murdered, and the local sheriff considers Mona a suspect. That doesn’t sit well with Mona. She’s determined to clear her name and find out who killed the maid and why. When she discovers the low-down varmint, she’ll take care of him her way! She doesn’t carry a gun in her purse for nothing.

That’s how Mona does things in 1934.

About The Author:

Award-winning author Abigail Keam has just released her new mystery series—the Mona Moon Mysteries—a rags-to-riches 1930s mystery series which includes real people and events into the storyline. The new series is about a cartographer who is broke and counting her pennies when there is a knock at her door. A lawyer, representing her deceased uncle, announces Mona has inherited her uncle’s fortune and a horse farm in the Bluegrass. Mona can’t believe it. She is now one of the richest women in the country and in the middle of the Great Depression!

Abigail Keam is an award-winning and Amazon best-selling author who writes the Josiah Reynolds Mystery Series about a Southern beekeeper turned amateur female sleuth. The Last Chance For Love Series tells of strangers who come from all walks of life to the magical Last Chance Motel in Key Largo and get a second chance at rebuilding their lives, and The Princess Maura Fantasy Series.

One thing Miss Abigail loves to do as an author is to write real people and events into her storylines. “I am a student of history and love to insert historical information into my mysteries. My goal is to entertain my readers, but if they learn a little something along the way—well, then we are both happy. I certainly learn a lot from my research, and I hope my readers come away with a new appreciation of beekeeping from my Josiah Reynolds Mysteries.”

PASSIONS

Besides loving history, Kentucky bourbon and chocolate, Abigail loves honeybees and for many years made her living by selling honey at a farmers’ market. She is an award-winning beekeeper who has won 16 honey awards at the Kentucky State Fair including the Barbara Horn Award, which is given to beekeepers who rate a perfect 100 in a honey competition.

A strong supporter of farmers’ markets and local food economy, Miss Abigail has taken her knowledge of beekeeping to create a fictional beekeeping protagonist, Josiah Reynolds, who solves mysteries in the Bluegrass. While Miss Abigail’s novels are for enjoyment, she discusses the importance of a local sustainable food economy and land management for honeybees and other creatures.

She currently lives on the Kentucky River in a metal house with her husband and various critters. She still has honeybees.
