Young Readers’ Adaptations

0

This week, Michelle Obama’s phenomenal memoir BECOMING was published as a young readers adaptation. Of all the words that have taken on new meaning in the pandemic, “adaptation” is surely among them. In a time where families are reading and working side-by-side like never before, the following nonfiction adaptations make for great supplemental material for students, discussions for inter-generational book clubs, or should simply satisfy the curious reader who wants to read what the adults are talking about.

Becoming: Adapted for Young Readers by Michelle ObamaBECOMING: ADAPTED FOR YOUNG READERS by Michelle Obama

Michelle Robinson was born on the South Side of Chicago. From her modest beginnings, she would become Michelle Obama, the inspiring and powerful First Lady of the United States, when her husband, Barack Obama, was elected the forty-fourth president. They would be the first Black First Family in the White House and serve the country for two terms. Most important, this volume for young people is an honest and fascinating account of Michelle Obama’s life led by example. She shares her views on how all young people can help themselves as well as help others, no matter their status in life. She asks readers to realize that no one is perfect, and that the process of becoming is what matters, as finding yourself is ever evolving. In telling her story with boldness, she asks young readers: Who are you, and what do you want to become?

Welles Crowther did not see himself as hero. He was just an ordinary kid who played sports, volunteered at his local fire department, and eventually headed off to college and then Wall Street to start a career. Throughout it all, he always kept a red bandanna in his pocket, a gift from his father. On September 11, 2001, Welles was working on the 104th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center when the Twin Towers were attacked. That day, Welles made a fearless choice and in doing so, saved many lives. Award-winning ESPN reporter Tom Rinaldi brings Welles’s inspirational story of selflessness and compassion to life in this accessible young readers’ adaptation of his New York Times bestselling book. This powerful story of making a difference through our actions is perfect for helping the post-9/11 generation understand the meaning of this historic day through the eyes of one young man.

Hallmark Paves the Way for Small Town Rom-Com by Melinda Curtis

Hallmark Paves the Way for Small Town Rom-Com by Melinda Curtis

I write Small Town Rom-Com. Even though I’ve almost exclusively written small town stories, I couldn’t say that ten years ago. Humor was a five-letter word that traditional publishers didn’t want to hear from writers of genre fiction. Humor meant the joke might not translate in international markets. Humor meant you might offend someone. But far worse, humor meant chic lit, and chic lit was dead.

Then along came a new wave of women’s fiction that took a tongue-in-cheek look on life as an adult. Humor was back in style. And while rom-coms are still risky business in theatrical releases, Hallmark found ratings gold with small town holiday romances with a healthy dose of humor. And now, it’s worked its way down to the small town romance subgenre.

I’ve noticed a lot of commonalities with small town rom-coms, including:

  • Well-meaning, meddling characters. I love a good small town matchmaker, be they widows, teams of kids, or dogs that seem to know more about romance than the hero and heroine.
  • Myths, local legends, and magic. Every town has a local myth or bit of unexplained magic. The myth that a kiss on Christmas Eve in the town square gazebo is fun, especially if you end up kissing the wrong guy!
  • Competitions and Plays. Bake sales for charity are fun, especially when the heroine can’t bake. I added pumpkin bowling to a Harvest Festival (I’ve always wanted to bowl with pumpkins).
  • Breaking stereotypes. I love characters doing the unexpected, like the white-haired grandpa who’s an expert gamer or the single dad giving out legitimate diaper-changing advice.

That’s my list. Do you enjoy small town rom-coms? Do you have anything you find funny that you’ve read or seen on a Hallmark movie? I’d love to hear about it. Who knows? I might put it in a book.

Here’s a look at Melinda’s latest release DREAM A LITTLE DREAM:

A small-town judge meets her match in a rodeo star troublemaker, but soon they may both end up targets of the town’s matchmakers in this delightful and heartwarming tale of romance.

Darcy Jones Harper is thrilled to have finally shed her reputation as the girl from the wrong side of the tracks. The people of Sunshine Valley have to respect her now that she’s the new town judge. But when the bad boy who broke her heart back in high school shows up in her courtroom, she realizes maybe things haven’t changed so much after all . . . because her pulse still races at the sight of him.

Jason Petrie wants to make amends for the mistakes of his youth—starting with the woman he never stopped loving. Darcy may not believe that he really intends to quit the bull riding circuit and stick around this time but Jason vows—with the help of the matchmaking Widows Club—to pull out all the stops to convince her that they both deserve a second chance.

E L JAMES’S FREED: FIFTY SHADES FREED AS TOLD BY CHRISTIAN RELEASING JUNE 1, 2021

0

E L James, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the global blockbuster Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy (150 million copies sold worldwide) will release her newest novel, FREED, the highly anticipated conclusion to her Fifty Shades Trilogy as Told by Christian, on June 1, 2021. The announcement was made today by Dominique Raccah, Publisher and CEO of Sourcebooks. The book has been edited by Anne Messitte, who has worked closely with James since the earliest days of the Fifty Shades phenomenon.

In FREED, Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele tie the knot––but marriage brings its own challenges. Though their passion burns hotter and deeper than ever, Ana’s defiant spirit continues to stir Christian’s darkest fears and tests his need for control. As old rivalries and resentments endanger them both, one misjudgment threatens to tear them apart.

E L James shared, “I am thrilled to announce the publication date for Freed.” She continued, “This story has been a labour of love, one that my readers have been eagerly awaiting. For me, just as for Anastasia Steele, Christian is a challenging, infuriating, and endlessly fascinating character. Living in his head is exhausting, but I got to explore aspects of his life in Freed that we only glimpsed in the original trilogy, and to follow his emotional growth in response to Ana’s love and compassion.”

FREED will be published simultaneously by the Bloom Books imprint of Sourcebooks and Penguin Random House UK (UK and Commonwealth Rights, excluding Canada). Audiobooks, in all formats, will be distributed via Penguin Random House Audio.

Knopf to Publish Billie Jean King’s Autobiography in August

0

Alfred A. Knopf will publish ALL IN: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY by Billie Jean King on August 17. The book marks the first time King has told her story in full, detailing how her private journey to be what she calls her “authentic self” played out alongside her groundbreaking activism and career in tennis—that included seven years as the top-ranked woman in the world, a record twenty Wimbledon championships, thirty-nine Grand Slam titles, and her watershed victory over Bobby Riggs in the famous “Battle of the Sexes.” King will also write about her unwavering ongoing commitment to equality and social justice. As King notes, many of the issues she and others fought for decades ago are being revisited today.

The announcement was made by Reagan Arthur, Executive Vice President and Publisher of Knopf. The book was edited by Jonathan Segal, Vice President and Executive Editor.

“Early on, what was most apparent to me was that the world I wanted didn’t exist yet,” King writes. “It would be up to my generation to create it.”

Beginning with her working-class childhood in Long Beach, California, and moving across the country and around the globe, King describes her love of the sport, her commitment to excellence, and her determination to be the No. 1 player in the world. She details her fight for equality in tennis, leading to the establishment of the first all-women’s pro tour in 1971, persuading the US Open to become in 1973 the first major tournament to award equal prize money to men and women. King also founded the Women’s Tennis Association, the Women’s Sports Foundation, and cofounded World TeamTennis.

King faced endless challenges along the way—entrenched sexism, an eating disorder, near financial ruin after being outed—and she shares how she became comfortable in her own skin at the age of fifty-one. She reflects on her role as a champion for equality and the godmother of women’s sports. And she covers her participation in the rising women’s movement, Title IX, the assassinations and antiwar protests of the 1960s, the civil rights movement, and, also, the LGBTQ+ rights movement and the impact these had on her life and her advocacy work. This is a timely book. King’s life today remains one of service, and in ALL IN she draws on her frontline experiences to offer contemporized insights on leadership, business, activism, sports, politics, marriage equality, parenting, sexuality, and love.

“This is a remarkable book by a remarkable woman,” says Segal. “Her fight, her spirit, and her actions have made people’s lives richer and better. She paved the way for a generation of leaders, and there are lessons in her life for everyone.”

Billie Jean King is the first female athlete to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and she was named one of Life magazine’s “100 Most Important Americans of the 20th Century.” She is the founder of the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative, the Women’s Tennis Association, and the Women’s Sports Foundation, and she cofounded World TeamTennis. She lives in New York.

Women Who Have Influenced Me by Anna J Stewart

Women Who Have Influenced Me by Anna J Stewart

It is safe to say I would not be where I am today without a number of women, mostly authors, who have personally influenced me. From receiving an encouraging response to a fan letter I wrote to Nora Roberts when I first started thinking about becoming a romance author, to working as an assistant to author Brenda Novak (she taught me so much about the business), to my own grandmother and mother, who only ever supported and encouraged my dream of becoming a writer, my life has been touched by many who have guided me along the way.

But there are also women who never had any idea they had an effect on me. Women who lived in a completely different world of celebrity and accomplishment and have been part of my life for as long as I can remember.

I was a kid of the 70’s, and my mind from day one, was filled with stories from the books I could not put down. I’d invent my own stories and act them out in my room (I was also an only child), and it never occurred to me there could be more than that. Until one day in 1977, when I stepped into a movie theater and watched the fluorescent yellow lettering scroll up the screen and take me to a galaxy far, far away.

Sassy, spunky, determined, and didn’t take crap from anyone Princess Leia didn’t only become part of my life that day because she was a heroine like no other I’d ever seen on screen before. Her strength and visceral connection to me was due to one important factor: who portrayed her. Carrie Fisher was awe inspiring, for me as a seven-year-old, to even now, as a fifty-year-old. Carrie didn’t start and stop with Leia, she used that platform and that success to catapult her to success both in front of and behind the camera as a screenwriter and script fixer. Her no-holds-barred, filter less attitude cut through society’s niceties and reminded me, as someone who was only beginning to discover what I wanted to become, let me see someone who accomplished what she set out to—in spite of the roadblocks in her way. Her wit and humor transcended the human language and made me realize how complex thought, reaction, and commentary could be. She, along with my favorite authors, ignited a love of words that burns to this day.

Speaking of someone facing roadblocks. Growing up, I was lucky enough to be introduced to classic Hollywood movies at a very early age. While I loved the adventure and romance of the Robin Hood and Captain Blood era, it was seeing Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes that caused an obsession that lasts to this day. I have no idea what sparked the connection. Perhaps it was learning we shared the same birthday or that, as I soon learned details of her existence, led such a tragic and misunderstood life. The mystery of her death was of course fascinating, especially to a blooming fiction-writing mind, but there was just this… aura about her I couldn’t look away from. I read countless books about her life; watched every single one of her movies; devoured interviews and quotes and spent ages puzzling over what might have been. To have accomplished everything she did by the time she died at 36, despite some horrific circumstances and decidedly misogynistic behavior by so many in her life, showed me that there are ways to work around life. She also showed me that what you see on the outside isn’t usually anything close to what’s going on the inside. We all wear masks. Some more visible—and damaged—than others.

With Carrie and Marilyn in my inspiration pockets, my most recent inspiration comes from a different direction. Julia Child was, by most estimations, one of the most unique and undefinable humans to ever walk the planet. Between her Amazonian stature and voice, she was different from the start, but she never let that get in her way. Her positivity as she explored the life she wanted to lead, was bombastic and contagious. I can remember seeing her show on the kitchen TV as my mother cooked along with her. Julia was hypnotic while entertaining and oh how she could laugh at herself. She taught me that mistakes, not necessarily successes, are what we learn from and that we should embrace them with as much joy as we do accolades. As someone who loves to cook and bake as well as write and create, I find myself thinking not only of Julia, but of Carrie and Marilyn, and how, if they hadn’t lived the lives they did, if they hadn’t taken the chances they took, my life may very well have turned out very differently.

Thank you, ladies. Whatever lies beyond, I hope you’re all having a marvelous time.

ALA praises House introduction of Build America’s Libraries Act

0

Today the American Library Association (ALA) welcomed the introduction of the Build America’s Libraries Act in the House of Representatives by Reps. Andy Levin (D-MI-9), Don Young (R-AK-at large) and 52 cosponsors. The legislation would provide $5 billion to support long-term improvements to library facilities, including addressing needs that have arisen due to COVID–19. The bill would enable libraries to better serve rural, low-income and underserved areas, as well as people with disabilities and other vulnerable library users.

“The pandemic has highlighted the importance of community places – physical spaces, like libraries, where we can meet, read, and learn together,” said ALA President Julius C. Jefferson, Jr. “We must ensure that libraries are safe, healthy, and accessible to everyone, not only today, but for decades to come. At the same time, the pandemic has exposed the depths of the digital divide. Libraries work on the front lines of digital inclusion, but many of them are doing so with twentieth-century facilities. To solve twenty-first-century problems, libraries need twenty-first-century infrastructure.”

America’s aging library infrastructure faces challenges ranging from broadband capacity, mold, and accessibility barriers to COVID-19 to natural disasters such as hurricanes and wildfires. The average U.S. public library building is more than 40 years old. Inadequate capital funding has made it difficult for libraries to address building concerns. At the federal level, Congress has not provided dedicated funding for library facilities since 1997.

The Build America’s Library Act would begin to address decades of underinvestment by providing funds to repair and construct modern library facilities in underserved and disadvantaged communities. Funding could be used for constructing, renovating, modernizing, or retrofitting library facilities, including by enhancing facilities to reduce the risk of COVID-19 and vulnerability to natural disasters.

The Build America’s Libraries Act is supported by more than 20 organizations, including ALA; Afterschool Alliance; Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute; American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; American Federation of Teachers; American Indian Library Association; American Institute of Architects; American Society of Civil Engineers; American Society of Interior Designers; Association for Rural & Small Libraries; Association of Research Libraries; Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums; Chief Officers of State Library Agencies; Council of State Archivists; Education Market Association; International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers; International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers; International WELL Building Institute; National Association of Counties; National Coalition for History; National Coalition for Literacy; National Digital Inclusion Alliance; National Humanities Alliance; National League of Cities; National Summer Learning Association; North America’s Building Trades Unions; Schools, Health & Libraries Broadband Coalition; Society of American Archivists; and Urban Libraries Council.

Supporters praised the bill, saying:

American Institute of Architects (AIA) EVP and Chief Executive Officer Robert Ivy
“America’s libraries have evolved with the times, and today we need them more than ever. AIA is pleased to again support the Build America’s Libraries Act to enable upgrades to our nation’s libraries to address existing challenges, including environmental hazards and accessibility barriers. This proposal is aligned with AIA’s Policy Platform goals to invest in community & civic infrastructure. The average public library building is more than 40 years old – in fact, half of the libraries that Andrew Carnegie funded a century ago are still in use as libraries today. Congress has not provided dedicated funding for library buildings in more than 20 years. This bill would provide much needed funding to make libraries safer, healthier, modern, sustainable, and fully accessible to people with disabilities – with priority given to improving libraries in the most underserved communities.”

National Association of Counties Executive Director Matthew Chase
“Counties are calling for solutions to modernize our nation’s infrastructure, including public facilities like libraries. Strong libraries make strong county partners, from education to workforce development and even COVID-19 vaccine distribution. With 900 of the nation’s public library systems organized as part of their county government and the cost of vital capital improvements falling primarily on local governments, we welcome the federal resources proposed under this legislation.”

ALA is asking library advocates to urge their Representatives and Senators to join as cosponsors of the Build America’s Libraries Act.
