Independent of the Week: Powell’s Bookstore

0

As COVID keeps many bookstores closed or operating on a skeleton crew we want to shine a light on these wonderful independent bookstores and remind you that small businesses can use your patronage and support!

This week we are looking at Powell’s Bookstore, billed as the largest independent bookstore. Located in Portland Oregon it opened its doors back in 1971. It now has five stores and boasts an inventory that exceeds two million books!

From the Powell’s website here is a bit of its history:

Powell’s roots began in Chicago, where Michael Powell, as a University of Chicago graduate student, opened his first bookstore in 1970. Encouraged by friends and professors, including novelist Saul Bellow, Michael borrowed $3,000 to assume a lease on a bookstore. The venture proved so successful that he managed to repay the loan within two months.

Michael’s dad, Walter Powell, a retired painting contractor, worked one summer with Michael in the Chicago store. He so enjoyed his experience that upon returning to Portland he opened his own used bookstore.

Walter swamped his original location by buying every marketable used book that came through the door, finally pushing the whole operation into a former car dealership on Northwest Burnside. The building has undergone many transformations, but if you look closely, you can still see evidence of its automotive past.

In 1979, Michael joined Walter in Portland, creating a bookstore with a unique recipe that, though viewed as unorthodox, worked: used and new, hardcover and paperback, all on the same shelf; open 365 days a year; and staffed by knowledgeable and dedicated booklovers.

Four decades later, Powell’s Books is a cornerstone of the community and continues to operate as a third-generation family-owned business with Emily Powell at the helm.

Says Emily: “My grandfather taught me that our job is to connect the writer’s voice with the reader’s ear and not let our egos get in between. My father taught me not only the love of the book itself but also how to love the business of bookselling.”

You can shop Powell’s online and we hope that you do!

4.5 stars out of 5

This one is dark, disturbing and horrific. Not for everyone. But, the high marks are for originality. You’re rooting for very dark and sinister people and at some point you start to wonder about yourself. LOL
There are triggers in this. Children killing, being taught to kill, that sort of thing. It’s the making of a psychopath that you kind of like. Sort of like the show Dexter.

There’s not a lot of relief in this book either. It’s hard hitting darkness. But, if that’s your cup of tea, this is the book for you.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

From the age of seven, Jack Harper is raised by the leader of a mystical cult, Cyrus Harper. Through Cyrus, Jack receives a full education in all usual subjects—economics, literature, mathematics, history—as well as one unique skill useful to a person in Cyrus’s position: assassination. With the help of Roland James, a man incapable of dying, Cyrus hones Jack into the perfect weapon to use against all who oppose him.

It is not long, however, before Jack discovers that Cyrus and Roland are not the only ones living in Cyrus’s mansion. There, too, exists a mysterious creature in the depths of the house with supposed immortal magic. According to Roland, this creature is responsible for all the miraculous things Jack has witnessed throughout her childhood, including Roland’s resurrection. The creature, potent and powerful, only weakens in the presence of Cyrus’s red velvet box—a dark, enchanted tool that grants Cyrus his invincibility and ensures his reign.

Lonely and terrified by her life in the cult, under Cyrus’s neverending watch, Jack desperately pursues the mysterious being. When they finally meet, her world is turned upside down, as he offers her more than she could have ever expected—the possibility of escape and her own secret, magical power.

A Dazzle of Diamonds

Welcome, tell us a bit about yourself. Where you’re from, where you live? Do you have one of those day-jobs?

I grew up in a small town in Arizona. After working in publishing in Colorado Springs and Nashville for ten years, I moved to Phoenix a few years ago so I could be closer to the coolest nieces and nephews an aunt could ask for. I do have one of those day-jobs. I work as the marketing manager for a nonprofit and get most of my writing done during lunch breaks and on the weekends.

How long have you been writing?

I wrote my first story when I was seven and signed my first book contract when I was 27. During that time I wrote some really bad novels, took a lot of classes, and wrote some better books. I’ve been writing for more than 30 years—professionally for the last 12.

Briefly describe your writing day.

My writing days never look the same. But generally, I write in spurts an hour a time. I prefer to go to a coffee shop or a restaurant and plug my headphones in while I fill up a page or two. And snacks always help.

Tell us about your latest release?

A Dazzle of Diamonds-coverA Dazzle of Diamonds is the third book in the Georgia Coast Romance series—a stand alone story about best friends searching for a lost Civil War treasure. Penelope Hunter loves her job as the events manager at one of Savannah’s premier historic venues—until her ex-fiancé walks into her office with his new bride-to-be. To make matters worse, a scheming social matriarch is intent on seeing Penelope fired, especially if she insists on being seen with Tucker Westbrook.

Since returning from serving two tours in the Middle East, Tucker has built a thriving security company. His work is nearly as stabilizing as his friendship with Penelope, who has been by his side since childhood. But when the lone candidate for county sheriff goads him, Tucker loses his cool and ends up on the ballot—and on the receiving end of a smear campaign claiming the Westbrooks were traitors to the South.

To clear his name, Tucker and Penelope must join forces to find the truth behind a 150-year-old lost treasure. But the more time they spend together, the closer she comes to losing her job—and falling helplessly in love.

Blurb:::::

Forced to make a different plan for her life after being jilted, Penelope Hunter threw herself into her job as event manager at one of Savannah’s best venues. But when her ex-fiancé and his new bride-to-be sign on as clients and a scheming social matriarch threatens to get her fired, her hard work may be in jeopardy.

After two tours in the Middle East, Tucker Westbrook is used to a life in flux. His only constant is his long-standing friendship with Penelope and the thriving security company he’s worked hard to build. But when a cocky candidate running unopposed for county sheriff goads him, Tucker ends up on the ballot and his life is upended. Not only is he on the receiving end of a brutal smear campaign, but he and Penelope must join forces to uncover the truth behind a 150-year-old treasure to
clear his family’s name. And the more time they spend together, the closer she comes to losing her job— and falling helplessly in love.

Are your characters entirely fictitious or have you borrowed from real world people you know?

Each of my characters is fictional, but I often pull from reality to flesh them out. I love to include stories from my own family’s history or from friends. A visit to Savannah inspired many of the people in this book.

Would you share one detail from your current release with readers that they might not find in the book?

Penelope and Tucker have been best friends for twenty-five years, and they’ve never been anything more than platonic. Well . . . except maybe that time that Penelope wanted to go to junior prom with Tucker. In fact, she turned down more than one invitation. But Tucker had no idea. He assumed she’d rather stay at home reading. So, he took another date, and Penelope pretended the night never happened. Because pining after her best friend was no way to live. Only lately . . . well . . . things have been a little different.

Who has been the most difficult character for you to write? (Any of your books)

The most difficult character I’ve ever written was Anne Norris from A Glitter of Gold. At first I couldn’t figure out her backstory, and then when I realized that she had been in prison, I struggled to figure out how she’d respond. How does spending almost six years in prison change someone? What kind of baggage was she carrying? Ultimately she took some time, but when I discovered who she was really was, I loved writing her character.

If you could be one of your characters for a day which character would it be? Why?

I think I’d like to be Aretha Franklin from my Prince Edward Island Dreams series. She’s a vibrant, spunky antiques dealer, who loves deeply and doesn’t take guff from anyone. And she’s believed by everyone who knows her.

What’s next?

I’m working on a new series scheduled to launch in summer 2021. It’s a contemporary romance series about three brothers in a small town. Each of them struggled to find their footing after their father walked out on their family when they were teenagers. As adults, they’re intent on making a future for themselves—and on finding love.

All writers are readers. Are there any particular authors that have influenced how you write and, if so, how have they influenced you?

I’m inspired by writers all the time. Romance writers like Jenny B. Jones and Maisey Yates have influenced how I use romantic tension in my writing. I loved how author Ariel Lawhon used time in I Was Anastasia, and it made me reconsider how I reveal historical details and play with chronology. I thought about that a lot as I wrote A Dazzle of Diamonds.

If you could have dinner with any writer living or dead, who would it be and why?

Right now, it would be dinner with my Tuesday night writing group. For almost two years, I’ve been meeting with a small group of writers including Lindsay Harrel, Sara Ella, Tina Radcliffe, and others. Their friendship has been such an encouragement and inspiration to me as a writer and as a woman. We’ve been unable to meet for the last month, and I miss them terribly.

If you could ask your favorite author a question what would it be?

My favorite novelist is Elizabeth George Speare, and I was an adult when I discovered she and I lived in Arizona at the same time before she passed away. I would have loved to meet her and hear about her inspiration and how she was able to write children’s books that appealed to adults.

Do you have a secret talent readers would be surprised by?

It’s not a great talent, but I do enjoy ice skating. I took lessons when I was 25, and I loved it.

Your favorite go to drink or food when the world goes crazy!

Diet Dr Pepper is always my go to!

What is the one question you never get asked at interviews, but wish you did? Ask and answer it.

What book do you wish you’d written?

So many! But I would have loved to have written the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. It’s the most enchanting book I’ve ever read!

Sheila’s Book Review: The Dragon Chronicles: Lunaria by Jasmine Brown

The Dragon Chronicles: Lunaria by Jasmine Brown

3.5 stars out of 5

This book has so much potential and I hope this author continues on.  There are other stories in this series and I’m tempted to give them a try.

I love strong heroines and this one has one easy to like and easy to hope for. It’s riches to rags, coming of age young adult fantasy that has a lot to offer.

But, the book really needs an editor. Both for grammar/structure and developmental. It’s not horrible. I was able to read the entire thing without too much frustration, but if that was fixed this would be fantastic! So there’s hope for future books with this author. Give her a try.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

A kingdom of dragons overrun by tyrants that seek to enslave them. Only the fated Champion can save her people from certain destruction.

After the hostile takeover of her kingdom, Princess Lunaria simply wanted to lay low and stay alive. Even after she rescued a poor stranger from a group of rowdy Titans, she planned to return to a life of hiding. But when her enemies identify her as the former princess and demand she surrenders herself in exchange for the lives of 20 innocent dragons, she can stay hidden no longer.

Now exposed and thrust into her predestined role as Champion of Wizteria, Lunaria only has on goal: getting her people to the point of peace and prosperity. The Titans won’t let that happen without a war. Will Lunaria win freedom for her people, or will the dragons descend into oppression and slavery for all eternity?

The Dragon Chronicles: Lunaria is the second book in The Dragon Chronicles Series and the companion book to the bestseller, The Dragon Chronicles: Solana. If you enjoy well-written page-turners with lovable characters and a great mix of action and adventure, you’ll love Brown’s latest coming of age fantasy.

Zeitgeist of the undead. Dawn of the Zombie Hunters by Sean Parker

3.5 Stars out of 5

The premise of this book drew me in. Science fiction AND zombies?! I was so excited. And a lot of the actual story is good and interesting.

Had this author had his book edited this would easily have been a 4 star book for me. I love the originality of it. If issues of grammar and structure don’t bother you and you love zombies and science fiction this could be the book for you!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

7 Super soldiers will use psychic powers to battle 6 billion zombies and decide the fate of the human race, but when the ultimate evil discovers the true power of dark energy, the fate of the planet Earth will hang in the balance. In this epic Post-Apocalyptic battle of wrong vs right and dark vs light!

AUTHORS AND THEIR AMAZING PETS —- LIZ BUTCHER

0

SPECIAL FEATURE
AUTHORS AND THEIR AMAZING PETS — LIZ BUTCHER

For as long as I can remember, we’ve had cats in the family. In my home, we have two feisty felines, both of which were rescue kittens. Pandora is a light-as-a-feather, white cat with blue eyes and grey tips on her ears, tail and paws. She’s very much a princess who loves nothing more than a comfortable place to sleep—which is mostly what she does. Though considering she’s now eighteen in human years, I think that’s okay! Our other cat is Zeus (a.k.a Zeus-Monkey) is ten in human years and is really more like a dog than a cat. He loves playing with my husband and rolling around on the floor, but if he gets too boisterous, Pandora will give him a couple of swats over the head.

Pandora has always hated the cold, and she used to love sitting on the back of an old PC I had when she was a kitten. Needless to say, she’s not a fan of the modern, streamlined computer we now have as there’s nowhere warm for her to curl up! Her current preference (or perhaps payback) is to get up into the bookcases and knock things onto the ground while she makes herself comfortable. Zeus is a little more aggressive in his search for his perfect place, which I uncovered one day when I was unwell and had a rest on our couch. I thought I was going mad, as I could hear faint snoring that sounded like it was coming from within the couch. Determined to get to the bottom of it, I pulled the couch away from the wall and discovered Zeus had ripped a hole in the fabric and made himself a little man-cave inside it. He was not a popular cat that day…

Even though they’re like chalk and cheese, I love having them around, especially at the moment while I’m working from home. Zeus will often snuggle up on my lap while I write and there is something hypnotic about him purring that helps me concentrate—that is, until Pandora pushes something off the shelf…

Interview with Lynette Eason

Welcome to Reader’s Entertainment Lynette!

How did you come up with your unique plot for your new book Acceptable Risk?
I’m always brainstorming with other authors. I was really stuck on this plot. Fortunately, I was able to throw out an SOS to a few other suspense authors, and they helped me craft the bare basics of the story. ☺

Acceptable Risk is the second book in the Danger Never Sleeps series. How are the books in this series tied together? The books are tied together by the friends who met while in the military.

The beginning of your book takes place in the Middle East. Did you find it difficult to write about an unfamiliar setting?
I did! No matter how much research you do, you never know if you’ve really “gotten it right.” Fortunately, a good friend, Vincent Davis, was able to give me exactly what I needed as far as details about the location and the military facts. He was a huge help.

Your main characters, Sarah Denning and Gavin Black, are in different military professions. What type of research was required to accurately portray their roles?
Again, I interviewed actual people who either worked the jobs or could point me in the right direction. You are well known for the nonstop action and light romantic elements that you pack into your suspense novels and were recently ranked as the top romantic suspense author by Family Fiction readers.

What has led to your success?
Wow. I have to say that I was very honored to see that. I have some fabulous readers who are more than happy to throw their support behind me. I can’t thank them enough for their votes. Other than working hard, learning the craft, attending conferences, networking within the industry, I would say the absolute biggest thing that’s led to my success has been the people who’ve invested in me. I’ve had several amazing mentors, including Dee Henderson, Gayle Roper, Shirlee McCoy, and more. They’re the reason I’m published. Add to that the fact that Revell has been an amazing publisher to work for. I believe that their support and willingness to do whatever it takes to get my books in readers’ hands is another key element in getting my name out there and my stories read. I’m forever grateful for their strategic diligence in marketing me and my books.

What is the title for your third book in this series and when is it scheduled to release?
I don’t have a third title yet, but it’s scheduled to release January of 2021.

How can readers contact you?
