Listening to Caesar

Our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel we named Caesar, has a royal name. A Blenheim – red and white coloring – he’s the emperor of the household, too.

Caesar and I have this ritual at night after I crawl into bed. He comes up onto my stomach and rests there for a few minutes, getting strokes from me before I either read for a while, talk with my husband or turn out the light. Caesar often falls asleep in that position. 

A couple of years ago, in late February which can get cold on the high desert where we live in Oregon, he stopped doing that. He would not get up on my stomach. He’d lay beside me and if I dragged him up on my belly, he wouldn’t look at me nor stay if I let lose his collar. “I guess I’d better go see a GI doc,” I told my husband in jest. “Caesar doesn’t want to hang out on my belly. Maybe there’s something wrong.”

Jerry didn’t take it too seriously (I didn’t either) but a friend of mine had a cat that curled on her chest and when the cat stopped doing it, she scheduled her mammogram and guess what?  Breast cancer. But I didn’t contact a Gastro Intestinal person. What would I say? “My dog thinks there’s something wrong with my gut?”

Two weeks later I was in the ER with both an E.Coli infection and a bowel obstruction. I spent three days in the hospital. My diagnostic dog! 

There does seem to be growing evidence that dogs in particular have some intuitive abilities. A Harvard study found certain canines could identify seizures in advance and hypoglycemic episodes for diabetics. They can detect breast cancer from the breath of a person. There’s an intimacy in smelling a person’s breath that dogs and horses apparently are tuned into. And of course, pets are healing presences in our lives too. Brought into places of great tragedy like Stony Hook or during a pandemic, survivors can experience comfort, care, and the warm breath of a safe being.

I read a poem once which now I can’t find but it was about how rescue dogs when they had no one to rescue became despondent and morose. Their fire-fighter handlers decided to dig holes and bury themselves so that the dogs could rescue them. I thought that the most precious gesture of care. The poem ended with a question of what kinds of spaces we can all make to bring life back to help restore not only another’s purpose but to bring joy and happiness to the world.

Our little Cavalier brought great joy when I got home from the hospital. He crawled right up onto me and actually sighed as I stroked his little red and white body. “Next time,” I told him, “I’ll listen to you.”

Authors and Their Amazing Pets: Sheila English

At what point is one a professional dog collector? That is a question we ask of author Sheila English who currently has six dogs, but has had up to nine at one time!

“Well, I pay for my dogs since they are all rescues, does that make me a professional?” laughs English.  “I’ve had dogs growing up. My first love was Lady, a Pitbull mix when I was eight. We had dogs before then, but Lady was special to me. Mine. I loved her fiercely and was lucky enough to have her, her entire life.”

Sheila went on to share, “I’ve always loved dogs. I love cats, too, but dogs are my spirit animal. I started fostering when I moved to Kentucky back in 2005 and continued to foster for Love of Paws and on my own until I moved from there in 2016. At one point I had my seven dogs plus two fosters. You learn how to handle a pack. I have had a pack of dogs for so long and with such success, I have people consult with me when it comes to dog packs.”

What’s the difference between have a couple of dogs and having a “pack?”

“You might have three dogs and you have a pack. You could have four and have four individual dogs. A pack is a mentality of your collected dogs. There’s a hierarchy to it and, as the owner, you are the alpha and you can never forget that. Nor, can you let them forget it. After you there will be a secondary alpha. In my home that alpha is Jill. We’ve had her the longest and she makes sure all the other dogs know to mind her.”

You include a dog in your Adam Frankenstein series, right?

Bella

“Yes, Bella. I actually have Bella who is a Harlequin or Merle miniature pinscher also called a MinPin. I got her about eight years ago and she is still my little baby girl. She had distemper as a puppy and nearly died. So, she still gets babied all these years later. Bella is super soft, like a rabbit, she’s a toy hoarder and her best friend is her sister, Rogue.”

“Rogue is a red MinPin. She and Bella are not from the same litter, but they love each other like sisters and are fiercely protective of one another. They also play with each other and hang out. You rarely see one without the other. Rogue was to be a foster, but the second my husband held her we knew she was a keeper. Rogue was unusual since she was a hermaphrodite, meaning she was both male and female. Since this condition was causing her physical pain, we had surgery for her and she is now a girl.”

“Jill is a mix. She’s MinPin, Dachshund and Italian Greyhound. She’s got that sleek greyhound form and never seems to gain weight. She’s bossy and we call her the fun police, but she is also the only dog that actually hugs you. She leans her head over on your chest and puts each paw up. Hank

“Hank was a rescue that almost didn’t get rescued. He had been scheduled to be destroyed at a kill shelter. But, someone knew I rescued small dogs and called me in a panic. They held Hank in their arms until I could get there, pay the fee and take him home. He was supposed to be a foster but I could not resist him! He was born with a genetic defect of the eye which is why they were going to destroy him. It is expensive to treat the eye. Luckily, we were able to get him the help he needed and as long as the eye works we will keep it.”

 

 

 

 

 

 

Hugo

“Hugo was a rescue that my husband got while he was in Kentucky and I had moved to California for a job. We were apart for three years and he missed having a dog. He wanted to adopt an older dog. We knew how many older dogs were turned in or destroyed so we take in the older ones when we can. We want them to have the best of their life for the rest of their life! Hugo had been severely mistreated. But, he bloomed when Ed took him home! He is the oldest dog we have, but he is also the most energetic! We never would’ve thought he would bounce back so well!”

 

 

 

 

 

 

Nanette aka Nan

“Last, but not least is Nanette. She is my sister’s dog. While my sister is dealing with moving and other issues in her life I took Nan and  have had her about a year now. We love Nan! She is a very talkative dog. She’s super smart, too. One day my sister may be able to take her back, but we will love her no matter where she ends up!”

Do you have any funny dog stories?

“Too many! I’ve been peed on quite a lot. Not funny at the time though. I had the two MinPins steal my underwear and run out in the front yard playing tug of war with them as the neighbors watched! My dogs are the best entertainment and best teachers I have.  They love unconditionally. I hope to always be the kind of person my dogs think I am.”

Swag and other needful things

As an avid reader and supporter of my favorite scribes, I collect memories with or of them! Sounds crazy but we readers love those remembrances of their time spent with you, your characters, your book. Readers love SWAG! Not just a basic bookmark {but it could be} or postcard, something tangible. Something that the readers perceive as something valuable, coming from you. Of course, authors can’t send everyone a little something, but done right they can.

.

SWAG means Stuff We All Get, my definition means Sales With A Goal. The goal is Sales and to give the readers a memory of their experience with you. These give-away items are promotional tools that should create a thought of you every time they use it or see it.  A treasure, a reward, a gift.

SWAG could mean almost anything related to you, your story, your characters or just a personal thank you treat that only lucky few get. It can also be part of your table displays when doing events to be an icebreaker, an incentive to ask “what’s this” or a perk with purchase. Readers love bragging rights too. They can’t wait to post something they got from you on their social media platforms. What makes it extra special is these swag items are limited in number pieces. By book or for the first 50 people or however you choose to create demand. Making these things limited, increases their perceived value. They can be limited or not, or until you run out of them.

Let me give you a few examples of GREAT SWAG that is very budget-friendly, travels light and well and also mails out well. When deciding on what items to use, these factors need to be factored into your expenses. Also if you are sending with a book, you can send by Media Mail which saves you money.

#1 Bookmarks!

I simply adore them!

Bookmarks are the most amazing little promotional items in the universe. They come in 100’s of shapes, sizes, forms and types. Of course, this is the first go to items as authors, but those standard basic bookmarks, unless vintage, have no perceived long term value. They serve an immediate purpose but after they get used a few times they start looking tattered and the corners get bent and look raggedy.

Readers may use it until the next basic bookmark comes along and yours gets replaced and tossed. How are they holding on to you if they tossed your information? Where’s the memory of being with you? Where’s the gift? There is none.

With all that said yes you can use basic, but use a higher quality paper, one that stands up. Or have some laminated special editions created. Also, create a saying, a quote, a photo of a character to make them really want to hold onto that bookmark. Create a series-set of character descriptions bookmarks that they can get when they order a series.

That adds value. It also gives images of what the people look like while reading. If you have some Super Fans, give them something special that will last forever.

Metal bookmarks can be engraved with your initials and placed inside a beautiful note card. That becomes not just a bookmark, but a gift I promise you they will cherish. As a collector, creator of book swag myself, and reader, I want the most!

Beautiful jewelry (Book Thongs) type bookmarks are another keeper. They last and women love that it looks like their books are wearing jewelry! Also keep in mind the size of your book. I’m always asking questions of my customers and most prefer the bookmark to fit inside the book with only the ribbon or tassel or jewelry hanging from the top and or bottom. They also hate when things mar the pages and too bulky to break the spine. Yes, we readers are very quirky about our books!

There are so many simple and clever bookmark ideas that are creative and cost-effective. I could discuss bookmark marketing for hours, but that’s for another day!

#2 Masks

As and we all know we are in the middle of a pandemic and masks are a necessity right now and for months to come. Right now there are 1000’s of people making and selling them and I bet if you go through your friends or fan pages you’ll find a few of them making them. Why not team up with them to make you some custom ones. A great line from your story, perhaps the title or half of a character’s face, placed onto the mask will draw some conversation and some sales! Sending one to a reader with a note, shows you care. Whatever is trending, use it.

#3 Hand Sanitizers

These have always been great swag items. Adding a label with your website and a cute quote like “this lasts longer than my boyfriend” or “Rub this for 20 seconds” is cute and a sharable post. Make sure your information is on there and if you can find refillables they can refill and use.

#4 Stickers

I’ve never seen so many people using stickers in my years of life! The Planner Babes LOVE THEM! Readers are using them. They are not all planners but are using them on stationery, inside notecards, everywhere! Why not have a caricature made of yourself, have your own stickers done. They could be bookplates or on your stationery when mailing out packages or note cards. You would be surprised at what you could do this a printer and some sticker paper or labels. Sending to fans too and let them show you how they used them, sounds like a contest to me! You could also team up with someone who has or purchase a Cricut, it can do amazing things and it cuts costs.

#5 Coasters

Everybody drinks something whether it be coffee to wine. Coasters can be customized and ordered in bulk, and used. They can be made in different materials from paper to tile and as a writer add a quirky line like “Wine with me” would be really cute and a keepsake.

#6 Sunglasses

The Dollar Tree can be a budgetnistas best friend. It’s summer, do a Beach Read theme. These sunglasses may vary from store to store so hop in your car and make a day of store hoping to collect a few dozen sunglasses. Hash Tags could be #SaltyBeach #BeachRead #BeachBitch. Whatever your audience would like. Have the readers who purchased your books wear them and do a selfie of themselves, another contest idea, you are welcome!

#7 Coloring Sheets or bookmarks

There are many free printable downloads of printable coloring sheets. They are relaxing and yes while under quarantine, we are finding things to do. Print these sheets or bookmarks on a good cardstock or design you own. Since it’s almost back to school, a box of 24 Crayola Crayons is as little as .25 to .50 per box.

#8 Your Signature

I spoke earlier in this article about perceived value. Your signature is GOLD. Signed books and memorabilia is valuable. Sign everything! Years ago I created a basic bookmark that said “Autographed by Author” because readers were no longer able to travel with books they wanted signed at events they were attending or authors who only had EBooks. Readers bought these to take to events and yes, authors signed them. Your signature in books as well as on any correspondence is valuable. Here and after you are gone to glory. A lot of readers only want books signed with your name, not signed to “Jane”. Signed to jane, decreases the value. Morbid but true.

#9 Music

Music can create a mood or an era or theme for your story. I love soundtracks because it really sets the scene and a lot of readers listen to music while reading. Creating a soundtrack helps tell the story. I have done these for many authors. These were not sold but given away with purchase. Some authors even did a reading on the recording prior to the music. Digital downloads are the new thing, I’m old school, give me a CD! You can create a Digital channel and they can sign up for access. This is a great way to collect email addresses and names for your mailing list. Music is the one thing that locks into your brain that even people with dementia remember.

#10 Thank You Notes

There is nothing better than getting something in the mail besides a bill! The art of letter writing and sending a card has diminished over the years. Imagine receiving a sweet little notecard, thanking you for your support written by hand. Even better with a treat inside. That my dear is going to blow your readers away!

Over the years I’ve gotten cards and letters by mail, from authors and I cherish every last one. I actually have a box that looks like a book that I keep them in. That personal touch is everything, especially because we are in a no-touch world right now. This has all the right elements, to make it memorable and a keepsake.

Being thoughtful of your SWAG can mean the world to a fan. They will always remember how you made them feel.

BEHIND THE WORDS WITH DARYL WOOD GERBER

Welcome Daryl, we’re excited to have you on Reader’s Entertainment. First, tell our readers a bit about yourself.

Where you’re from, where you live? Is writing your full-time job?

I live in Los Angeles. I’m originally from Northern California. I’ve been in Los Angeles most of my life, though I did move to Florida, North Carolina, and Connecticut before returning “home” to Los Angeles ten years ago.  Writing is my full-time job, I’m happy to say.

How long have you been writing?

I started writing when I was an actress. I wrote TV and film and was lucky enough to have a TV show idea that I created picked up for a series, but when we moved across country (to Florida) for my husband’s career (a wise choice!), I gave up acting and focused my time on writing what I’d always loved to read: suspense and mystery. I took lots of classes. I joined a super critique group (all of us are now published), and I put a number of manuscripts into drawers that have not and will not EVER be opened. 

Give readers a look at a typical writing day.

I wake up early, walk my goldendoodle Sparky, exercise, do my crossword puzzle with breakfast and then get to work around nine. I write until noon. I do a little email and PR, eat lunch, and get back to writing. That could include promotional materials, synopses, outlines, or rewrites. It’s not all fun and games.

Tell us about your latest release. Where the idea came from? Perhaps some fun moments, or not so fun moments?

I was at a Renaissance Faire and I fell in love with the art of fairy gardens. A woman who was there glowed with a lovely energy. I wanted to connect with that same glow. I found a garden store not far from me that focused on fairy gardens. There aren’t a lot of them. For me, it was Kismet! I went to the store and fell in love with everything there. So, I decided to create a character who could live the life of a shop owner who brings joy to customers by helping them design fairy gardens. It’s well known that seeing a fairy will bring luck into one’s life.

Could you share one detail from your current release with readers that they might not find in the book? Perhaps a juicy bit of back-story, or something only you know about a character.

During high school, Courtney was good friends with Brady Cash. They shot hoops and were in photography class together. (That part is in the book.) If she were honest with herself, however, she had eyes for Brady. Every girl did. He was likeable, funny. Older. However, afraid of being rejected, she maintained the friendship and never let on that, if pressed, she might say yes to a date. When her future fiancé walked into her life, she forgot about Brady, but she had often thought of him after her fiancé broke off their engagement. And she has kicked herself many times for not feeling confident enough to track him down and ask him for a date. Now…?

Who has been the most difficult character for you to write? Why?

Courtney’s father. I want him to be loveable, but he’s quite stern. He raised her by himself and he was a good father, but having been a cop and being a man who likes rules and regulations, he isn’t warm and fuzzy. So, I’m afraid he doesn’t come across as kind as I’d like him to be. She adores him. Admires him. Respects him. In the second book, I tackle their relationship. It’s amazing how many characters I’d like to make the focus of a book. Maybe that’s why a series can consist of ten to twenty stories, because of the additional cast members.

If you could be one of your characters for a day which character would it be? Why?

Fiona. I love to fly. I’d love to do somersaults in the air. I’d love to flit around people and listen in on their conversations. I have to admit that I wouldn’t want to suffer the queen fairy’s wrath, but boy, I’d have fun for a day. Promise. I can be an imp.

All writers are readers. Are there any particular authors that have influenced how you write and, if so, how have they influenced you?

I fell in love with mysteries because of the Nancy Drew stories. Then I read all the Agatha Christy novels. I love whodunnits. But I also love suspense. My favorite book is Rebecca. I adored Jane Eyre. Dark secrets, kept close to the chest, intrigue me. Now, I read across genre, so I have many favorite “current” authors: Krista Davis, Jenn McKinlay, Ginger Bolton, Hannah Dennison, Harlan Coben, Meg Gardiner, Alison Gaylin…and so many more.

Do you have a secret talent readers would be surprised by?

I’m not sure it’s a secret talent. In my youth, I could be a bit of a daredevil. I hitchhiked around Ireland by myself and I jumped out of a perfectly good airplane (with an instructor). Loved skydiving. It takes tons of time to learn the skill, and I’m way to busy, so I did not devote myself to learning it, but I loved the experience. I also like to sign and dance – just not mid-air.

Your favorite go to drink or food when the world goes crazy!

Chardonnay, the oaky kind. Dark chocolate. Vanilla ice cream. Peaches, if they’re ripe. Yes, this is a balanced meal. Almost all the food groups.

What is the one question you never get asked at interviews, but wish you did? Ask and answer it.

I’ve been asked a lot of questions, but no one has ever asked where I get my perseverance. Being a middle child with an older sister who decided she was NOT going to be the perfect, nose-to-the-grindstone typical oldest child, I took up the mantle and became a Type A personality. I try to do everything right. Always. I’m much better at failing now that I’m older. But I rarely give up.  Okay, I will admit I gave up on a Monet water lilies jigsaw puzzle recently. Every piece was blue and nearly the same shape! Honestly? What madman made that one?

What you have to remember here is that this story is told through the memories of someone who survived the most horrific massacre in the world. She is 90 years old and some details of what she went through she will not tell. This book brought up so many emotions especially in the world we live in today of unrest. Here experience of living in the Krakow Ghetto and then being shipped off to Auschwitz were horrid. There are many parts that had me in tears and in disbelief. Even though I’ve studied the Holocaust in school, hearing or reading from survivors is something totally different. It’s more personal. So if you are into history and wanting to read something that’s real, raw, and tells history from a survivors eye this is the book for you. Happy reading my friends.

First, tell our readers a bit about yourself.  Where you’re from, where you live? Is writing your full-time job?

I’m Vicki Delany, and I live in bucolic Prince Edward County, Ontario. I now am lucky enough to write full time.

How long have you been writing?
About 20 years.  I have published almost forty books.

Give readers a look at a typical writing day.
My writing day is very scheduled. I write every day of the week when I am home. I start about nine and write for about 3 or 4 hours. I write on a dedicated laptop computer that is used only for writing books, not even for working on promotional material. It’s never been set up with email, Facebook, twitter, anything other than Word. That way, I can concentrate rather than being distracted.

Tell us about your latest release? Where the idea came from? Perhaps some fun moments, or not so fun moments?
My newest book is called Tea and Treachery and it’s the first in the Tea by the Sea series from Kensington. The main character owns a traditional afternoon tea room on Cape Cod and the idea came from my own love of a proper afternoon tea.  Much drinking of tea and eating of scones and tea sandwiches was involved in the research.

Who has been the most difficult character for you to write? Why?
Rose Campbell is Lily Roberts’ grandmother. Rose owns Victoria-on-Sea, a B&B on the same property as Lily’s tea room.  I wanted Rose to be feisty and strong-willed but not obnoxiously so, and that can sometimes be a delicate balance.

If you could be one of your characters for a day which character would it be? Why?
I’d love to be one of the guests at Victoria-on-Sea and a customer at tea by the Sea. I’d relax in my beautifully decorated room overlooking the sea, enjoy a delicious full breakfast, wander the lovely gardens and walk along the beach, and then later go for a lovely afternoon tea.

All writers are readers. Are there any particular authors that have influenced how you write and, if so, how have they influenced you?
The books of people like Kate Carlisle, Jenn McKinley, and Mary Jane Maffini (and so many others!) showed me how to write a cozy book: an exciting mystery yes, but also full of heart and humour.

Do you have a secret talent readers would be surprised by? I
’m  a very good baker, if I do say so myself.

Your favorite go to drink or food when the world goes crazy!
Coffee in the morning, a nice glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc or Prince Edward County Chardonnay in the evening does the trick.
